  • The major operations of Evolutionary Computation include crossover, mutation, competition and selection. Although selection does not create new individuals like crossover or mutation, a poor selection mechanism may lead to problems such as taking a long time to reach an optimal solution or even not finding it at all. In view of this, this paper proposes a hybrid Evolutionary Programming (EP) algorithm that exhibits a strong capability to move toward the global optimum even when stuck at a local minimum using a synergistic combination of the following three basic ideas. First, a "local selection" technique is used in conjunction with the normal tournament selection to help escape from a local minimum. Second, the mutation step has been improved with respect to the Fast Evolutionary Programming technique previously developed in our research group. Finally, the crossover and mutation operations of the Genetic Algorithm have been added as a parallel independent branch of the search operation of an EP to enhance search diversity.

  • In this paper, we propose a new relay selection technique which utilizes interference cancellation with decoding information at multiple relays for buffer-aided successive relaying systems. The transmitting relay is selected if its own transmission to the destination is successful and the number of relays which can successfully decode the data from the source is the maximum at the same time. Simulation results show that the proposed relay selection technique significantly outperforms the conventional relay selection scheme in terms of outage probability.

  • In recent years, several volume selection techniques have been tried to obtain 31P MR spectroscopy in vivo. Most volume selection techniques, however, suffer from T2 decay in VOI due to the relatively long selection time. In this paper, we propose a new localized 3-D volume selection technique which is specially suitable for 31P spectroscopy. The proposed technique, which uses the radial scans in the k-space, minimizes T2 decay during the selection time and also provides good volume selectivity.

  • Because of rapid increase of internet user, numerous popular web sites have been made on the internet but it is hard to find out a systematic technique for the selection of qualified web site in consumer position. Generally, there are black box, white box and gray box viewpoint for evaluating web site. In this paper present evaluation criteria based on AHP(Analysis Hierarchy Process) technique of black box viewpoint for optimal web site selection in consumer position. We considered usability, efficiency, compatibility based on ISO/IEC 9126 for quality measurement of web site and executed practical analysis about web site in internet. This paper show that the proposed selection technique is applicable to optimal web site selection.

  • A technique that provides prediction intervals based on a model called an empirical linear model is discussed. The technique, high-dimensional empirical linear prediction (HELP), involves principal component analysis, factor analysis and model selection. HELP can be viewed as a technique that provides prediction (and confidence) intervals based on a factor analysis models do not typically have justifiable theory due to nonidentifiability, we show that the intervals are justifiable asymptotically.

  • It is necessary to select the appropriate global climate model (GCM) to take into account the impacts of climate change on integrated water management. The objective of this study was to develop the selection technique of representative GCMs for uncertainty in climate change scenario. The selection technique which set priorities of GCMs consisted of two steps. First step was evaluating original GCMs by comparing with grid-based observational data for the past period. Second step was evaluating whether the statistical downscaled data reflect characteristics for the historical period. Spatial Disaggregation Quantile Delta Mapping (SDQDM), one of the statistical downscaling methods, was used for the downscaled data. The way of evaluating was using explanatory power, the stepwise ratio of the entire GCMs by Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) basis. We used 26 GCMs based on CMIP5 data. The Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios were selected for this study. The period for evaluating reproducibility of historical period was 30 years from 1976 to 2005. Precipitation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature were used as collected climate variables. As a result, we suggested representative 13 GCMs among 26 GCMs by using the selection technique developed in this research. Furthermore, this result can be utilized as a basic data for integrated water management.

  • The effect of rebirthing technique on the genetic algorithm (GA)-based size optimization is investigated. The GA mimics the principles of nature and it can gradually improve structural design through biological operations such as fitness, selection, crossover and mutation. However, premature optimum has been often detected in the generic GA with continuous design variable. Since then, the so-called rebirthing technique has been proposed to avoid this problem. However, the performance of the rebirthing technique has not been reported. Therefore, the size optimizations of spatial structures are tackled to investigate the performance of the rebirthing technique on the generic GA. From numerical results, it is well proved that the rebirthing technique is very effective to produce the optimum values regardless of the values of parameters used in the GA operations.

  • High-speed classification method becomes an important research issue in text categorization systems. A fast text categorization technique, named feature value voting, is introduced recently on the text categorization problems. But the classification accuracy of this technique is not good as its classification speed. We present a novel approach for feature selection, named document-side feature selection, and apply it to feature value voting method. In this approach, there is no feature selection process in learning phase; but realtime feature selection is executed in classification phase. Our results show that feature value voting with document-side feature selection can allow fast and accurate text classification system, which seems to be competitive in classification performance with Support Vector Machines, the state-of-the-art text categorization algorithms.

  • In this study, we present a pore-selection technique to estimate the size of pore. The estimation of the size of pore is important to examine the temporal evolution of size itself and corresponding intensity. The size of pore is typically estimated by applying the intensity threshold technique to the fixed box which contains the entire pore. The typical method has disadvantages in the following circumstances; there are small features near the pore or the image has low spatial resolution. In the former, it is difficult to define a box containing the pore only, excluding the small features near the pore. In the latter, the background and threshold intensity are insignificant due to the insufficient number of pixel in the box. To avoid these difficulties, we use a pore-selection technique which is simply based on the measurement of distances from the pore center. In addition, we will discuss the advantage of the technique for the imaging spectrograph data like the NST FISS.
