  • In this paper we propose a feature selection method identifying important features in the semivarying coefficient model. One important issue in semivarying coefficient model is how to estimate the parametric and nonparametric components. Another issue is how to identify important features in the varying and the constant effects. We propose a feature selection method able to address this issue using generalized cross validation functions of the varying coefficient least squares support vector regression (LS-SVR) and the linear LS-SVR. Numerical studies indicate that the proposed method is quite effective in identifying important features in the varying and the constant effects in the semivarying coefficient model.

  • The accelerated failure time (AFT) model is a linear model under the log-transformation of survival time that has been introduced as a useful alternative to the proportional hazards (PH) model. In this paper we propose variable-selection procedures of fixed effects in a parametric AFT model using penalized likelihood approaches. We use three popular penalty functions, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), adaptive LASSO and smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD). With these procedures we can select important variables and estimate the fixed effects at the same time. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using simulation studies, including the investigation of impact of misspecifying the assumed distribution. The proposed method is illustrated with a primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) data set.

  • Schwarz's Bayesian information criterion (BIC) is one of the most popular criteria for model selection, that was derived under the assumption of independent and identical distribution. For correlated data in longitudinal studies, Jones (Statistics in Medicine, 30, 3050-3056, 2011) modified the BIC to select the best linear mixed effects model based on the effective sample size where the number of parameters in covariance structure was not considered. In this paper, we propose an extended Jones' modified BIC by considering covariance parameters. We conducted simulation studies under a variety of parameter configurations for linear mixed effects models. Our simulation study indicates that our proposed BIC performs better in model selection than Schwarz's BIC and Jones' modified BIC do in most scenarios. We also illustrate an example of smoking data using a longitudinal cohort of cancer patients.

  • When the dairy cattle are genetically improved by embryo transfer, generation intervals can be reduced since sires are selected by their full-sister's records rather than by their daughter's records and selection intensity increases because only donor cows and sires for them are selected. In addition by embryo transfer many number of full-sisters and full-sisters are produced at the same time, resulting in the increase in the accuracy of selection.

  • This study investigated the effects and interrelationship on sensual behavior and wine information sources in selection attributes of wine. Selection attributes of wine were categorized into four variables: sensual behavior, recommend information, label information, and wine information. The study showed that for sensual behavior variable, "taste" was the most influential item as compared to "food harmony", "mood harmony" and "partner's choice". For recommendation information, label information and wine information, "specialist", "grape varieties" and "brand" had the most significant effects. The study performed factor analysis on sensual behavior and wine information sources. The cumulative variance was 74.197%, implying that all four variables incorporated appropriate items. In the reliability analysis, all four variables showed Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ values above 0.6. In the analysis of the causal relations using a structural model, the effects of customers' sensual behavior on wine information sources was further investigated. The model verified that taste, food harmony, mood harmony and partner's choice, which are items of sensual behavior, had significant impacts when choosing wine. Sensual behavior influenced all wine information sources, which customers utilize in decision-making. Among these sources, sensual behavior had the biggest effects on recommendation information, followed by wine information and label information.

  • This study was performed to identify effects of hospital selection factors on patient satisfaction and reuse intention. For this purpose, a survey was performed subject to outpatients and inpatients in 10 hospitals located in Busan district from March 7, 2013 to June 21, 2013 and total 447 copies were used as final study data. As results of this study, it was found that among the hospital selection factors of outpatients, internal conditions and medical service gave effects to patient satisfaction and internal conditions, service of medical staffs and medical service gave effects to reuse intention. It was found also that among the hospital selections factors of inpatients, internal conditions, service of medical staffs and medical service gave effects to patient satisfaction and external conditions, internal conditions, service of medical staffs and medical service gave effects to reuse intention. It was suggested that in the effect of patient satisfaction on reuse intention, both inpatients and outpatients gave the effect and thus higher patient satisfaction was related to higher reuse intention. Therefore, instead of hospital-centered medical treatments, hospitals should restructure its medical and service systems that are patient-centered. Also, it is necessary for the hospital managers to recognize that patient satisfaction is an important factor in increasing its profit.

  • Purpose: This study analyzed the effects of a health policy capacity development education program as a publicprivate partnership (PPP) model in official development assistance (ODA) for health policy administrators. Methods: Between October 2015 and September 2017, 41 participants from underdeveloped countries completed the three-week education program at K university, following the official selection process of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and each country's embassy. Results: The effects of the health policy capacity development education program differed significantly according to participants' age (p=.043), country region (p=.045), and academic or professional degree (p=.007). Academic or professional degree significantly predicted the effects of the program (β=.41, p=.007), explaining 21.7% of the variance in the regression model. Conclusion: The current selection process for ODA program participants considers recommendations from each country's embassy to determine eligible candidates. The hosting institution's opinions or suggestions regarding participants' professional expertise or work experience, country region, or demographic characteristics should also be considered in the participant selection process.
