Seismic data with missing traces are often obtained regularly or irregularly due to environmental and economic constraints in their acquisition. Accordingly, seismic data interpolation is an essential step in seismic data processing. Recently, research activity on machine learning-based seismic data interpolation has been flourishing. In particular, convolutional neural network (CNN) and generative adversarial network (GAN), which are widely used algorithms for super-resolution problem solving in the image processing field, are also used for seismic data interpolation. In this study, CNN-based algorithm, U-Net and GAN-based algorithm, and conditional Wasserstein GAN (cWGAN) were used as seismic data interpolation methods. The results and performances of the methods were evaluated thoroughly to find an optimal interpolation method, which reconstructs with high accuracy missing seismic data. The work process for model training and performance evaluation was divided into two cases (i.e., Cases I and II). In Case I, we trained the model using only the regularly sampled data with 50% missing traces. We evaluated the model performance by applying the trained model to a total of six different test datasets, which consisted of a combination of regular, irregular, and sampling ratios. In Case II, six different models were generated using the training datasets sampled in the same way as the six test datasets. The models were applied to the same test datasets used in Case I to compare the results. We found that cWGAN showed better prediction performance than U-Net with higher PSNR and SSIM. However, cWGAN generated additional noise to the prediction results; thus, an ensemble technique was performed to remove the noise and improve the accuracy. The cWGAN ensemble model removed successfully the noise and showed improved PSNR and SSIM compared with existing individual models.
Due to mechanical failure or geographical accessibility, the seismic data can be partially missed. In addition, it can be coarsely sampled such as crossline of the marine streamer data. This seismic data that irregular sampled and spatial aliased may cause problems during seismic data processing. Accurate and efficient interpolation method can solve this problem. Futhermore, interpolation can save the acquisition cost and time by reducing the number of shots and receivers. Among various interpolation methods, the Matching Pursuit method can be applied to any sampling type which is regular or irregular. However, in case of using sinusoidal basis function, this method has a limitation in spatial aliasing. Therefore, in this study, we have developed wavelet based Matching Pursuit method that uses wavelet instead of sinusoidal function for the improvement of dealiasing performance. In addition, we have improved interpolation speed by using inner product instead of L-2 norm.
For efficient data processing, trace interpolation and regularization techniques should be antecedently applied to the seismic data which were irregularly sampled with missing traces. Among many interpolation techniques, MWNI (Minimum Weighted Norm Interpolation) technique is one of the most versatile techniques and widely used to regularize seismic data because of easy extension to the high-order module and low computational cost. However, since it is difficult to interpolate spatially aliased data using this technique, model-constrained MWNI was suggested to compensate for this problem. In this paper, conventional MWNI and model-constrained MWNI modules have been developed in order to analyze their performance using synthetic data and validate the applicability to the field data. The result by using model-constrained MWNI was better in spatially aliased data. In order to verify the applicability to the field data, interpolation and regularization were performed for two field data sets, respectively. Firstly, the seismic data acquired in Ulleung Basin gas hydrate field was interpolated. Even though the data has very chaotic feature and complex structure due to the chimney, the developed module showed fairly good interpolation result. Secondly, very irregularly sampled and widely missing seismic data was regularized and the connectivity of events was quite improved. According to these experiments, we can confirm that the developed module can successfully interpolate and regularize the irregularly sampled field data.
Recently, machine learning (ML) techniques have been actively applied for seismic trace interpolation. However, because most research is based on training-inference strategies that treat missing trace gather data as a 2D image with a blank area, a sufficient number of fully sampled data are required for training. This study proposes trace interpolation using ML, which uses only irregularly sampled field data, both in training and inference, by modifying the training-inference strategies of trace-based interpolation techniques. In this study, we describe a method for constructing networks that vary depending on the maximum number of consecutive gaps in seismic field data and the training method. To verify the applicability of the proposed method to field data, we applied our method to time-migrated seismic data acquired from the Vincent oilfield in the Exmouth Sub-basin area of Western Australia and compared the results with those of the conventional trace interpolation method. Both methods showed high interpolation performance, as confirmed by quantitative indicators, and the interpolation performance was uniformly good at all frequencies.
We acquire seismic data with regularly or irregularly missing traces, due to economic, environmental, and mechanical problems. Since these missing data adversely affect the results of seismic data processing and analysis, we need to reconstruct the missing data before subsequent processing. However, there are economic and temporal burdens to conducting further exploration and reconstructing missing parts. Many researchers have been studying interpolation methods to accurately reconstruct missing data. Recently, various machine learning technologies such as support vector regression, autoencoder, U-Net, ResNet, and generative adversarial network (GAN) have been applied in seismic data interpolation. In this study, by reviewing these studies, we found that not only neural network models, but also support vector regression models that have relatively simple structures can interpolate missing parts of seismic data effectively. We expect that future research can improve the interpolation performance of these machine learning models by using open-source field data, data augmentation, transfer learning, and regularization based on conventional interpolation technologies.
In land and marine seismic survey, we generally set receivers with equal interval suppose that sampling interval Is too narrow. But the cost of seismic data acquisition and that of data processing are much higher, therefore we should design proper receiver interval. Spatial aliasing can be occurred on seismic data when sampling interval is too coarse. If we Process spatial aliasing data, we can not obtain a good imaging result. Trace interpolation is used to improve the quality of multichannel seismic data processing. In this study, we applied the Spitz algorithm which is widely used in seismic data processing. This algorithm works well regardless of dip information of the complex underground structure. Using prediction filter and original traces with linear event we interpolated in f-x domain. We confirm our algorithm by examining for some synthetic data and marine data. After interpolation, we could find that receiver intervals get more narrow and the number of receiver is increased. We also could see that continuity of traces is more linear than before Applying this interpolation algorithm on seismic data with spatial aliasing, we may obtain a better migration imaging.

The recent research aim of seismic trace interpolation is to effectively interpolate the data with spatial aliasing. Among various interpolation methods, the Matching Pursuit interpolation, that finds the proper combination of basis functions which can best recover traces, has been developed. However, this method cannot interpolate aliased data. Thus, the multi-component Matching Pursuit interpolation and moveout correction method have been proposed for interpolation of spatially aliased data. It is difficult to apply the multi-component Matching Pursuit interpolation to interpolating the OBC (Ocean Bottom Cable) data which is the multi-component data obtained at the ocean bottom because the isolation of P wave component is required in advance. Thus, in this study, we dealt with an effective single-component matching Pursuit interpolation method in OBC data where P-wave and S-wave are mixed and spatial aliasing is present. To do this, we proposed the Ricker wavelet based single-component Matching Pursuit interpolation workflow with moveoutcorrection and systematically investigated its effectiveness. In this workflow, the spatial aliasing problem is solved by applying constant value moveout correction to the data before the interpolation is performed. After finishing the interpolation, the inverse moveout correction is applied to the interpolated data using the same constant velocity. Through the application of our workflow to the synthetic OBC seismic data, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed workflow. In addition, we showed that the interpolation of field OBC data with severe spatial aliasing was successfully performed using our workflow.
In marine seismic surveys, the inevitable occurrence of trace gaps in the near offset resulting from geometrical differences between sources and receivers adversely affects subsequent seismic data processing and imaging. The absence of data in the near-offset region hinders accurate seismic imaging. Therefore, reconstructing the missing near-offset information is crucial for mitigating the influence of seismic multiples, particularly in the case of offshore surveys where the impact of multiple reflections is relatively more pronounced. Conventionally, various interpolation methods based on the Radon transform have been proposed to address the issue of the nearoffset data gap. However, these methods have several limitations, leading to the recent emergence of deep-learning (DL)-based approaches as alternatives. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of two representative DL-based studies to scrutinize the challenges that future studies on near-offset interpolation must address. Furthermore, through field data experiments, we precisely analyze the limitations encountered when applying previous DL-based trace interpolation techniques to near-offset situations. Consequently, we suggest that near-offset data gaps must be approached by extrapolation rather than interpolation.
A scheme for missing-trace interpolation of linear events is proposed. For a two-dimensional seismic dataset which contains linear events, a post-interpolation spectrum can be estimated from a portion of the original aliased spectrum. The restoration of missing trace data is accomplished by minimizing the energy after applying a filter which has an amplitude spectrum that is inverse to the estimated spectrum.
This paper examines the contribution of three sources of uncertainties to probabilistic seismic behaviour of wood frame buildings, including ground motions, intensity and seismic mass. This sensitivity analysis is performed using three methods, including the traditional method based on the conditional distributions of ground motions at given intensity measures, a method using the summation of conditional distributions at given ground motion records, and the Monte Carlo simulation. FEMA P-695 ground motions and its scaling methods are used in the analysis. Two archetype buildings are used in the sensitivity analysis, including a two-storey building and a four-storey building. The results of these analyses indicate that using data-fitting techniques to obtain probability distributions may cause some errors. Linear interpolation combined with data-fitting technique may be employed to improve the accuracy of the calculated exceeding probability. The procedures can be used to quantify the risk of wood frame buildings in seismic events and to calibrate seismic design provisions towards design code improvement.
