  • In this study, an online seed potato sorting system using a visible and near infrared (40 1100 nm) transmittance spectral technique and statistical model was evaluated for the nondestructive determination of infected and sound seed potatoes. Seed potatoes that had been artificially infected with Pectobacterium atrosepticum, which is known to cause a soil borne disease infection, were prepared for the experiments. After acquiring transmittance spectra from sound and infected seed potatoes, a determination algorithm for detecting infected seed potatoes was developed using the partial least square discriminant analysis method. The coefficient of determination($R^2_p$) of the prediction model was 0.943, and the classification accuracy was above 99% (n = 80) for discriminating diseased seed potatoes from sound ones. This online sorting system has good potential for developing a technique to detect agricultural products that are infected and contaminated by pathogens.

  • Pathogenic fungi and bacteria such as Pectobacterium atrosepticum, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus, Verticillium albo-atrum, and Rhizoctonia solani were the major microorganism which causes diseases in seed potato during postharvest process. Current detection method for disease-infected seed potato relies on human inspection, which is subjective, inaccurate and labor-intensive method. In this study, a reflectance spectroscopy was used to classify sound and disease-infected seed potatoes with the spectral range from 400 to 1100 nm. Partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) with various preprocessing methods was used to investigate the feasibility of classification between sound and disease-infected seed potatoes. The classification accuracy was above 97 % for discriminating disease seed potatoes from sound ones. The results show that Vis/NIR reflectance method has good potential for non-destructive sorting for disease-infected seed potatoes.

  • This study aimed to contribute fundamental study of sprouting in Gibberellin treated potatoes, and studied about Glucose and Sucrose amount and its sprouting stem structure in it sprouting seed potatoes with Gibberellin treatment. The results obtained are as follow; The quantity of glucose in gibberellin treated seed potatoes showed remarkable increase in comparison with that of those untreated, and the increment went up as the seeding date pass. As to the concentration of gibberellin, the 10 ppm plot contained more glucose than 5 ppm plot but 14th after seeding, it was found that this tendency was reversed. The increasing tendency of the quantity of sucrose in gibberellin treated seed potatoes were similar to that of glucose. The sprouting stems of the gibberellin 10 ppm and 5ppm plot were all longer than the controls. And after 14 days on account of thin ing growth by gibberellin treatment, the sprouting stems of the 5ppm plot were longer than 10ppm plot. The microscopic vertical and cross section of the gibberellin treated sprouting stems showed larger cells than those of untreated. The cells of sprouting stem treated by gibberellin 10 ppm were larger than those of the stems treated 5ppm.

  • During visiting North Korea from 2001 to 2005, I have had a few chances to observe and discuss several North Korean scientists for the seed production program and also, the occurrence of potato pests. Healthy seed production, especially in the early generations, e.g. the production of virus-free starting materials as well as in vitro pre-basic seeds (G0) by hydroponics and basic seeds under netted houses according to her new national seed potato program of Academy of Agricultural Science, Pyongyang, North Korea, has been done well so far. Some major pests occurred, however, in the early generations such as pre-basic seed (G0) in greenhouse, basic seed (G1) in screenhouse, foundation seed-I (G2) and even ware potatoes in the fields are Phytopitthora infestans, Spongospora subterrunea, Ralstonia solanacearum, Pythium spp. and some viruses such as Potato virus X, Potato virus Y, Potato leafroll virus, and also larger potato ladybeetle, greenhouse whitefly and potato tuber moth. Therefore, the success of healthy seed production in North Korea will be thoroughly depended on the pest control and the multiplication of virus-free seed stocks in the isolated areas, especially where no infected potatoes are grown.

  • It is one of the important subjects in fall crop production of potatoes in korea to find the proper direct planting method as a substitute for transplanting method by sprouting inducement at seed-bed. From this point the author has undertaken this experiments to examine the effects of several handling methods of seed tuber pieces at planting on sprouting of fall grown potatoes at Ansung Agricultural College from August to september in 1969. The results of experiments induced sprouting with Gibberellin treatment using the variety Irish Cobbler were as follows; 1. Sun light exposure treatment to cut surface of potato seed pieces resulted in rotting of seed pieces and delay of sprouting and bud growth. Exposure more than three hours induced severe rotting(more than fifty percent) of seed pieces (Table I). 2. When soil moisture are abundant and the duration of sun light. exposure is short, even direct planting method of treated seed pieces with Gibberellin resulted in good potato stands (Table 2). 3. The direct planting method, as the rotting of seed pieces are avoidable are applicable in fall crop production of potatoes us a substitute for transplanting method because the sprouting and bud growth are promoted more in case of direct planting than transplanting (Table 3). 4. When the humidity in the bottle was low no healing effects was found by holding the seed pieces in large closed bottle under the trees for three days before planting (Table 2). 5. If duration of sunlight exposure is short, no difference of potato stands between clear day planting and cloudy day plant ing (Table 3). 6. As long as soil moisture deficiency. was not induced the irrigation at planting shows no effects to protect the seed piece rotting after planting (Table 3).

  • To do mass multiplication of plug seedlings in potatoes, apical stem cuttings originated from virus-free microtubers were cut to one-two internodes and transplanted into the plug-tray. After 10days, we applied Chitosan and Wood Extraction on rooting and tuber formation of plug seedlings. To improve field adaptability of plug seedlings, rooted cuttings with a height of 20cm after 20days of cutting were transplanted ito the fields, We applied 500~2000ppm Chitosan on growth characteristics and tuber formation of that. The above and underground growths, such as plant height and number of leaves were significantly more vigorous after treatment with 500~1,000ppm Chitosan and 2,000ppm Wood Extraction, the spray treatment was carried out five times at intervals of four days after ten days of transplanting. T-N, K, P, Mg and Na, were higher as the concentrations of chitosan and Wood Extraction were higher. The growth and tuber yield in plug seedlings planting plot and seed potatoes planting plot were effectively highter as foliar application of Chitosan(500~2,000ppm) was done after planting the plot. T-N content in leaves and tuber was higher as the concentration of Chitosan was high. A similar tendency was shown in K, P and Mg. In the small tuber(under 30g), the number of tubers and tuber yield were relatively increased in the seed potatoes planting plot, but the large tubers(over 80g) yield was higher in the plug seedlings planting plot, and in order to increase tuber yield in plug seedlings it was necessary to add plant density to the field.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extracts from sweet potatoes (SP) and watermelon (WM) on the oxidative stability of perilla seed oils (POs) over the existing ones. A comparison was done between the oxidative stability of perilla oil (PO) after the addition of 0.1% of SP, and WM extracts and PO without extract. The oxidative stability was measured based on the viscosity, acid value (AV), peroxide value (POV), antioxidant (DPPH) activity, p-anisidine value (p-AV), and fatty acid composition. The viscosities ranges were: PO without extract, from 53.99±0.99 to 74.38±1.61 cps, PO with SP extract, from 53.99±0.10 to 58.73±0.8 cps, and PO with WM extract, from 53.98±0.10 to 56.00±0.70 cps. While the PO containing the SC-CO2 extracts had significantly lower AV, POV, and p-AV, their antioxidant activity was approximately 10 times higher than that of the PO without extract. There were no significant differences in fatty acid composition between SC-CO2 extracts added groups and PO without extract (p<0.05). The findings of this study confirmed that the SC-CO2 extracts from sweet potatoes and watermelon enhanced the oxidative stability of perilla seed oils, and are potential natural antioxidants for use in the food industry.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of chitosan on the growth and yield of fall-planted potatoes. The research was carried out in fall-planted potatoes from August 2000 to Aprial 2001 at the height of 250m above sea level in Jeju Island. Soaking for 30 min. of seed potatoes in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosan shortened days to emergence by 4 to 6 days. Stem length, number of stems and number of stolons per plant were 56.5 cm, 4.3, and 19.0, respectively, when seed potatoes were soaked for 30 min. in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitossan. Total potato yield in this treatment reached 2,963 kg per 10a and was significantly greater than in other treatments. Yield of marketable tubers (greater than 30g) per 10a for treatment of seed potatoes soaking in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosan and for treatment of foliage spray with 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosan plus chitosna power (10 kg per 10a) miximg with soil was 2,761 kg and 2,628 kg, respectively. Contents of Mg, Fe and B were the greatest in the treatment of 30 min. soaking of seed potatoes in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosanm. The increased contents of these elements are considered to have caused yield increase as a result of increased chlorophyll content for photosynthesis.
