We study the two storm events of 1997: one in May that was accompanied by a relativistic electron event (REE) and the other in September, with a more profound Dst decrease, but with no significant flux increase of relativistic electrons. We find that a larger amount of seed electrons was present in the May event compared to that of the September storm, whereas the ULF (ultra low frequency) power was more enhanced and the particle spectrum was harder in the September event. Hence, we demonstrate that a larger storm does not necessarily produce more seed electrons and that the amount of seed electrons is an important factor in an actual increase in REE flux levels, while ULF can harden the particle spectra without causing an apparent REE.

We demonstrate that the flux levels of post-storm relativistic electrons are well correlated with the amount of electrons of the energy about 100 keV injected during substorms, while the power of ULF is more or less related to the spectral hardening of these seed electrons. Hence, the existence of ULF alone during the storm time does not necessarily cause flux increase of relativistic electrons as storms do not always generate sufficient amount of seed electrons of this energy range. Galaxy clusters are known to host many active galaxies (AGNs) with radio jets, which could expand to form radio bubbles with relativistic electrons in the intracluster medium (ICM). It has been suggested that fossil relativistic electrons contained in remnant bubbles from extinct radio galaxies can be re-accelerated to radio-emitting energies by merger-driven shocks via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), leading to the birth of radio relics detected in clusters. In this study we assume that such bubble consist primarily of thermal gas entrained from the surrounding medium and dynamically-insignificant amounts of relativistic electrons. We also consider several realistic models for magnetic fields in the cluster outskirts, including the ICM field that scales with the gas density as $B_{ICM}{\infty}n^{0.5}_{ICM}$. Then we perform time-dependent DSA simulations of a spherical shock that runs into a lower-density but higher-temperature bubble with the ratio $n_b/n_{ICM}{\approx}T_{ICM}/T_b{\approx}0.5$. We find that inside the bubble the shock speed increases by about 20 %, but the Mach number decreases by about 15% in the case under consideration. In this re-acceleration model, the observed properties of a radio relic such as radio flux, spectral index, and integrated spectrum would be governed mainly by the presence of seed relativistic electrons and the magnetic field profile as well as shock dynamics. Thus it is crucial to understand how fossil electrons are deposited by AGNs in the ICM and how the downstream magnetic field evolves behind the shock in detailed modeling of radio relics.

While it is presumed that substorm injection electrons of a few hundred keV are the seeds for relativistic electrons frequently observed during the recovery phase of storms, correlation between the two events has not been well explored with the observed satellite data. We would like to address this problem in the present paper using the data from the geosynchronous GOES and LANL satellites as well as from the polar orbiting NOAA satellites. Our statistical study shows the two channels of LANL SOPA instrument, 105 150 keV and 150 225 keV, best correlates with the increase of the flux levels of GOES relativistic electrons. Especially, the relativistic electron events are not observed when the flux levels of these two channels are maintained low in the substorm injections, regardless of the level of the ULF activities. The conclusion does not change whether the substorm injections occur . during the storm recovery phase or during the non-storm time. As the ULF waves are observed quite frequently over the entire range of L=4 to L=7, the reason why REEs are seen mostly during the storm time seems to be related to the fact that storm-time substorms produce more seed electrons than the substorms that occur during the non-storm time.
Nano-structured electrodes were fabricated to develop efficient photoelectrochemical conversion systems for the synthesis of hydrogen from water and hydrocarbon fuels from $CO_2$. In this work, we compared the photoactivity of rutile $TiO_2$ nanorods grown on FTO and SEED/FTO by a hydrothermal method. An analysis of the microstructures showed that the density of nanorod/SEED/FTO samples, which showed only the (002) peak in their x-ray diffraction patterns, was two times higher than that of a nanorod/FTO sample. The photocurrent density of nanorod/SEED/FTO samples was increased by as much as 40% of the photocurrent density of the nanorod/FTO sample due to the increased specific density of the nanorods. However, the transient time for a recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes was 20 times faster in the nanorod/SEED/FTO. The seed layers are discussed as possible recombination sites.
[ $PZT(Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3)$ ] thin films were deposited by multi-target reactive sputtering method on $RuO_2$ substrates. Pure perovskite phase PZT films could be obtained by introducing Ti-oxide seed layer on the $RuO_2$ substrates prior to PZT film deposition. The PZT films deposited on the $RuO_2$ substrates showed highly voltage-shifted hysteresis loop compared with the films deposited on the Pt substrates. The surface of $RuO_2$ substrate was found to be reduced to metallic Ru in vacuum at elevated temperature, which caused the formation of oxygen vacancies at the initial stage of PZT film deposition and gave rise to the voltage shift in the P-E hysteresis loop of the PZT capacitor. The fatigue characteristics of the PZT capacitors under unipolar wane electric field were different from those under bipolar wane. The fatigue test under unipolar wane showed the increase of polarization. It was thought that the ferroelectric domains which had been pinned by charged defects such as oxygen vacancies and the charged defects were reduced in number by combining with the electrons injected from the electrode under unipolar wave, resulting in the relaxation of the ferroelectric domains and the increase of polarization.
The Degradation mechanism of the ZnO-varistor fabricated with the content of a 3-Composition seed grain is discussed using the method of Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC). The spectra of TSC is measured in the temperature range of -130~270$^{\circ}C$ with a various forming electric fields E$\sub$f/, temperature T$\sub$f/ time tf, and a various rising rate of temperature. It is observed that there are appeared the peaks of ${\alpha}$, ${\alpha}$$_2$, ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$from high temperature in a TSC spectrum. It seems that ${\alpha}$$_1$ peak is due to thermal depolarization of donor ions forming the space charge in the depletion layer, and ${\alpha}$$_2$peak is due to the detrapping of trapped electrons in deep trap level of intergranular layer, and ${\beta}$ peak is due to the thermal exciting of carrier existing in the donor level of grain itself, and ${\gamma}$ peak is due to the thermal exciting of trapped carrier in all shallow trap site randomly distributed in the inner of sample and/or a intrinsic impurity existing in it.
Radio relics, Mpc-size elongated diffuse radio emissions found at galaxy cluster outskirts, are known as the result of shock acceleration during the cluster merger. Theories have claimed that low Mach number shocks are too inefficient to create the observed properties of radio relics. Alternative scenarios such as fossil cosmic ray electrons (CRes) from AGNs are required to explain the observations. However, how exactly the fossil CRes from AGNs can supply the Mpc-size radio relic is still an open question. In this study, we present our recent uGMRT radio observation results of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 514. We found three remarkable AGN jet tails that may have undergone multiple reorientations and extend nearly 800 kpc. Using multi-frequency data, we have performed spectral analysis along the AGN tails and track how the tails lose or gain energy as they propagate in the intracluster medium. We will discuss whether these AGN jets can provide sufficient seed CRes to radio relics.
Purpose: Phytosanitary irradiation treatment can effectively control regulated pests while maintaining produce quality. The objective of this study was to establish the best irradiation treatment for mangosteen, a popular tropical fruit, using a Monte Carlo simulation. Methods: Magnetic resonance image (MRI) data were used to generate a 3-D geometry to simulate dose distributions in a mangosteen using a radiation transport code (MCNP5). Microsoft Excel with visual basic application (VBA) was used to divide the image data into seed, flesh, and rind. Radiation energies used for the simulation were 10 MeV (high-energy) and 1.35 MeV (low-energy) for the electron beam, 5 MeV for X-rays, and 1.25 MeV for gamma rays from Co-60. Results: At 5 MeV X-rays and 1.25 MeV gamma rays, all areas (seeds, flesh, and rind) were irradiated ranging from 0.3 ~ 0.7 kGy. The average doses decreased as the number of fruit increased. For a 10 MeV electron beam, the dose distribution was biased: the dose for the rind where the electrons entered was $0.45{\pm}0.03$ kGy and the other side was $0.24 {\pm}0.10$ kGy. Use of an electron kinetic energy absorber improved the dose distribution in mangosteens. For the 1.35 MeV electron beam, the dose was shown only in the rind on the irradiated side; no significant dose was found in the flesh or seeds. One rotation of the fruit while in front of the beam improved the dose distribution around the entire rind. Conclusion: These results are invaluable for determining the ideal irradiation conditions for phytosanitary irradiation treatment of tropical fruit.
Hydrothermal synthesis of highly crystalline $TiO_2$ nanorods is a well-developed technique and the nanorods have been widely used as the template for growth of various core-shell nanorod structures. Magneli/CdS core-shell nanorod structures are fabricated for the photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) electrode to achieve enhanced carrier transport along the metallic magneli phase nanorod template. However, the long and thin $TiO_2$ nanorods may form a high resistance path to the electrons transferred from the CdS layer. $TiO_2$ nanorods synthesized are reduced to magneli phases, $TixO_{2x-1}$, by heat treatment in a hydrogen environment. Two types of magneli phase nanorods of $Ti_4O_7$ and $Ti_3O_5$ are synthesized. Structural morphology and X-ray diffraction analyses are carried out. CdS nano-films are deposited on the magneli nanorods for the main light absorption layer to form a photoanode, and the PEC performance is measured under simulated sunlight irradiation and compared with the conventional $TiO_2/CdS$ core-shell nanorod electrode. A higher photocurrent is observed from the stand-alone $Ti_3O_5/CdS$ core-shell nanorod structure in which the nanorods are grown on both sides of the seed layer.
