  • In this research, settling tests with marine clays in Korea and extensive literature review were performed to investigate the characteristics of sedimentation and consolidation so that their behaviors during dredging and reclamating could be evaluated. Design parameters related to Yano's method (1985), one of experimental approaches having been used widely in Korea to estimate sedimentation and consolidation, were analyzed and their proprieties were reassessed. For samples from four different sites of south and west coasts in Korea respectively, settling tests with 1m height of columns were carried out, changing initial water content and height of sample in order to evaluate settling and consolidation characteristics of them from analyzing test results. More reliable regression curves than values from literature review were obtained as analyzing test results of estimating coefficient of sedimentation/ consolidation and initial setting velocity with changing initial water content. Relation between height of soil solid and surface height of slurry at the stages of initiation and termination of consolidation was also assessed. Finally, for marine clays of south and west coasts of Korea, ranges and average values of these design parameters were evaluated and typical empirical equations between these design parameters were also proposed. On the other hand, comparisons of characteristics of sedimentation and consolidation between marine clays from south coast and them from west coast were also performed.

  • This study gives the characteristics of sedimentation-consolidation and surface strength for dredging and landfill areas in each coast. For the analysis of the sedimentation-consolidation characteristics, the column tests were performed and the results were compared with existing various literatures and design reports for dredged soil disposal. The surface strength of landfill soils of west and south coast were investigated by using the portable cone tester. As a results of analysis, the coefficient of sedimentation-consolidation on south coastal dredging soils is more sensitive with variation of initial water contents than on the west coastal dredging soils. And the surface strength of the dredging landfills is a higher in the west coast than in the south coast. Finally, the results of this study will be utilized as a basis data for analysis and design in the field of dredging and landfill.

  • In this study, settling experiment was performed about cohesive and sandy soils among representative sample expected to dredge and dump for analysis of settling and consolidation characteristic. The analysis showed the definite difference between cohesive soils and sandy soils of relationships with settling and consolidation coefficient, a water content, interfacial heights. But directly after a dredged reclamation, prediction results about a initial volume change showed that cohesive soil of a water content change was decreased rapidly as time goes by, but sandy soils made no difference in a water content change. Results were compared and analyzed with the settling and consolidation coefficient and a initial settling velocity by real soil amounts for a feasibility check about test conditions applied to these experiment: we judge that test conditions are appropriate, each material by such these analyses suggests the scope of settling and consolidation coefficient, average and the representative relational formula.

  • Recently this country has carried out the coast reclamation centering on the west and south coast for effective practical use of a country, considering purchase of materials and environmental problem, and carrying into effort the reclamation method after dredging the ground in the ocean. In this large scale ocean dredging reclaiming work, prediction the ground subsidence after reclaiming is very important for not only expense lose by overestimation or underestimation but also hereafter the best suited project establishment. this study carries out sedimentation and self weight consolidation in each cases and searches the features to analyze effect on kinds of soil of ground before dredging, abandonment height when it abandons momentary, void ratio, difference of abandonment height when it abandons by stages and difference of particle content of spoil.

  • Characteristics of sedimentation of dredged soil is depended on the field condition and characteristics of dredged soil because dredged fill ground was formed by various field condition, sedimentation and self-weight consolidation process of dredged soil. Dredged fill ground is formed as separated sedimentary layer by characteristics of dredged soil. Therefore, it requires some special test method to consider a various field condition, characteristics of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation of dredged soil. In this study, in order to identify the characteristics of sedimentation of dredged soil with disposing velocity geo-centrifuge test and laser particle size analyzer were performed. As a results, river and mixed dredged soil show the separation sedimentation by soil particle size. And sedimentation of clayey dredged soil is parallel to the bottom surface of dredged fill space.

  • According to the field measurement of dredging-reclaimed land, the actual self-weight consolidation settlement has been frequently reported to be less than the predicted values based on the laboratory tests results. The author estimates that one of the reasons is the reduction of the compressibility due to the sedimentation of the dredging material, Furthemore, the aging effect is ignored in the consolidation characteristics of the very low stress range as a pump dredging-reclaimed land. In this paper, a series of seepage consotidation tests has been carried out by applying the seepage force to the specimen prepared by sedimentation in consolidmeter in order to clarflfy the aging-effect on the compressibility of dredging clayey soil, Also, with a view to overcome unstable consolidation solution occurring in the case where the initial water content is higher as pumpdredging reclaimed land, the finite difference analysis technique using predictorforrector method is suggested that it gets good agreement with ezperimental results. Finally, the compressibility of the dredging clayey soil is depended on self-weight consolidation time.

  • The compression index, which represents the compressibility of clay, is generally obtained from the consolidation test, or has been predicted by empirical correlations with soil properties. In this study, the results of consolidation tests on natural and reconstituted Busan and Inchon clays are analyzed to figure out the sedimentation state and its effect on empirical correlations. Results of analysis show that the void index of Busan clay is higher than SCL while the void index of Inchon clay is lower than SCL. By comparing prediction errors with ${\Delta}e_r$, which represents the sedimentation state of clay, it is shown that errors predicting the compressibility based on the liquid limit and plasticity index decrease as ${\Delta}e_r$ increases. Supplemented correlations predicting the compression index of Busan and Inchon clays are suggested using these relationships.

  • In this study, an experimental research on the acceleration effect of dredged soil's self weight consolidation with seepage consolidation and PBD was conducted. The middle-sized consolidation equipment had been manufactured in order to investigate the acceleration of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation by PBD and a lower drainage. Seepage pressure was applied to the PBD installed in the center of the test equipment and a drainage by seepage pressure was allowed. The comparison between cases with and without PBD and seepage pressure reveals that the quantity of drained water and the amount of settlement was nearly 1.2 times to 3.68 times greater in the case with PBD and seepage. Early consolidation completion and the use of reclaimed site are expected due to the acceleration of settlement and increase of the quantity of reclamation if PBD is installed while being reclaiming using the result of the research.
