High-frequency(40∼120 kHz) reflection loss measurements on the water-sandy sediment with a flat interface were conducted in a water tank for various grazing angles. The water tank(5×5×5 m) was filled with a 0.5 m-thick-flat bottom of 0.5ø-mean-grain-size sand. Reflection losses, which were experimentally obtained as a function of grazing angle and frequency, were compared with the forward loss model, APL-UW model (Mourad & Jackson, 1989). For frequencies below 60 kHz, the observed losses well agree with the reflection loss model, however, in cases for frequencies above 70 kHz, the observed losses are greater by 2∼3 dB than the model results. The model calculation, which does not fully account for the vertical scale of roughness due to grain size, produce less bottom losses compared to the observations that correspond to large roughness based on the Rayleigh parameter in the wave scattering theory. In conclusion, for the same grain-size-sediment, as frequencies increase, the grainsize becomes the scale of roughness that could be very large for the frequencies above 70 kHz. Therefore, although the sea bottom was flat, we have to consider the frequency dependence of an effect of roughness within confidential interval of grain size distribution in reflection loss model.
The High-frequency (30 ∼ 120 ㎑) bottom reflection loss at rough water-sediment interface is affected by the gram size distribution of the sediments. The roughness of the bottom surface is represented by "acoustical roughness. g/sub R/" The grain size of sandy sediments is g/sub R/∼O(1) and the dependence as a function of frequency. We suggest the modified bottom reflection loss model (HYBRL model , HanYang university Bottom Reflection Loss model) that include in the deviation of the reflection loss as a function of the grain size distribution and frequency dependence. And bottom reflection loss model of frequency dependence and deviation of bottom properties is verified by water tank and field experiments.
Simrad EM950 multibeam data and surficial sediment grab samples were acquired to correlate backscatter strength with surficial sediment properties in the eastern Yellow Sea which tidal sand ridges are dominantly developed. The study area is divided into the western sand ridge zone characterized by well sorted, fine sandy sediment, and the eastern non-sand ridge zone characterized by poorly sorted, medium sand with some gravels and shell fragments. In spite of minor difference in grain size between two zones, the variations of backscatter strength between two zones are distinct. Multibeam backscatter strength of study area shows good correlation with the grain size of surface sediment as well as the carbonate contents. High occurrence of carbonate shell fragments can increase grain size and bottom roughness. The dominance of higher backscatter strength in the eastern non-sand ridge zone may reflect the effects of coarse grain size and high shell fragments contents.
An numerical analysis of sediment-laden flow is carried out, and results are compared with the experiments of Coleman(1981, 1986) that included the several cases varying sediment size and quantity in open channel flow. K-$\omega$ turbulence model is selected for the fully turbulent flow field, and the concentration equation considering the fall velocity is adopted for the concentration field. The model of Einstein and Chien(1955) is applied to couple the velocity field and the concentration field. Most of researches have been carried out without considering the bed-load thickness, but it is found that the bed-load thickness cannot be ignored in case of a large amount of sediment or a large size of it. The bed-load thickness and surface roughness are considered in this study. Here, $\beta$ value, which is defined by the reciprocal of turbulent Schmidt number and is related with the concentration profile, is found to be varied according to the sediment size and quantity. Even though most of researchers have insisted that $\beta$ had always larger than 1.0, it may be concluded that $\beta$ can have smaller value than 1.0, that is coincident with the report of recent research.
High-frequency (126-㎑) bottom backscattering measurements with various bottom types were conducted at the water tank in Ocean Acoustic Laboratory, Hanyang University. For the purpose of investigating the energy distribution of bottom scattering with various bottom types, the sediment was varied with gravel, sand, sandy mud and mixed bottoms. To examine the anisotropic nature of the scattering due to the orientations of bottom ripple, the footprints were made transverse and longitudinal to the direction of incident wave. The total scattering characteristics are that the larger grazing angles the larger backscattering strengths become and backscattering strengths for a transverse ripple case are higher than those of longitudinal ripple case. finally, the variations of scattering strength depend mainly on the ripple's orientation.
In this study, a software module to predict the effectiveness of vegetation buffer strip (VBS) has been developed for using with Chemicals, Agricultural Management and Erosion Losses (CAMEL), a distributed watershed model. Most basic functions for the VBS module are same as CAMEL except functions newly developed to implement sedimentation enhancement by vegetation and level spreaders. For verification of the VBS module, sensitivity analyses for length, roughness, soil and vegetation type of VBS were carried out using a test grid cell. The surface discharge of sediment are highly sensitive to the roughness coefficient of VBS. The removal efficiencies of VBS for the surface discharges of sediment and TP are generally high regardless of environment changes. The surface discharges of TOC and TN are highly sensitive to the length and soil of VBS. The removal efficiencies of VBS for the surface discharges of TOC and TN are generally lower than those of sediment and TP. The newly developed VBS module reasonably simulates the removal efficiencies of surface discharges that vary according to the environment changes. It is expected that this VBS module can be used for evaluating the effectiveness of VBS-based best management practices to be applied to reduce pollution discharges from various non-point sources.
The sound wave in the sea propagates under the effect of water depth, sound speed structure, sea surface roughness, bottom roughness, and acoustic properties of bottom sediment. In shallow water, the bottom sediments are distributed very variously with place and the sound speed structure varying with time and space. In order to investigate the seasonal propagation characteristics of low-frequency sound wave in the Yellow Sea, propagation experiments were conducted along a track in the middle part of the Yellow Sea in spring, summer, and autumn. In this paper we consider seasonal variations of the sound speed profile and propagation loss based on the measurement results. Also we quantitatively investigate variation of bottom loss by dividing the propagation loss into three components: spreading loss, absorption loss, and bottom loss. As a result, the propagation losses measured in summer were larger than the losses in spring and autumn, and the propagation losses measured in autumn were smaller than the losses in spring. The spreading loss and the absorption loss did not show seasonal variations, but the bottom loss showed seasonal variations. So it was thought that the seasonal variation of the propagation loss was due to the seasonal change of the bottom loss and the seasonal variation of the bottom loss was due to the change of the sound speed profile by season.

In this study, comparisons of the backscattering coefficients and the coherence values which had been extracted from SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images such as JERS-1, ENVISAT and ALOS satellites with surface roughness, surface geometric and soil moisture content were carried out. As the results of analysis using the backscattering coefficient and coherence values from SAR images, the coherence was shown high in the region containing more of mud fraction due to higher viscosity of fine grain-size. A lot of tidal channels were well developed in the Ganghwa tidal flat, affecting the drainage of seawater and subsequent soil moisture content by exposure time of tidal flat. The backscattering coefficient. consequently, appeared to be lower in sand flat and mix flat with decrease of soil moisture. In contrast, most mud flats were distributed at high elevation so that soil moisture was not much influenced by seawater. The backscattering coefficient in mud flat seemed to have a relationship with the density of tidal channel. In addition, lowering backscattering coefficients in the all Ganghwa tidal flat was observed when surface remnant water increased according to the amount of rainfall. The correlation between backscattering coefficient, coherence and sediment environment factors in the Ganghwa tidal flat was investigated. In the future, more quantitative spatial analysis will be helpful to well understand the sedimentary influence of various sediment environment factors.
In this study, after the installation of a subsea pipeline, backfilling was performed in the trenched area. During these operations, a stability problem in the subsea pipeline occurred. The pipeline was directly impacted by environmental loading such as waves and currents that were caused by backfill material when scouring or sediment transport and siltation was carried out. Therefore, this study reviewed whether trenching was necessary, and conducted research into an indigenous seabed property that contains granular soil. A study of cohesive soil was also conducted in order to cross-correlate after calculating the values of the critical Shields parameter relevant to elements of the external environment such as waves and current, and the shear Shields parameter that depends on the actual shearing stress. In case of 1), sedimentation or erosion does not occur. In the case of 2), partial sedimentation or erosion occurs. If the case is 3), full sedimentation or erosion occurs. Therefore, in the cases of 1) or 2), problems in structural subsea pipeline stability will not occur even if partial sedimentation or erosion occurs. This should be reflected particularly in cases with granular and cohesive soil when a reduction in shear strength occurs by cyclic currents and waves. In addition, since backfilling material does not affect the original seabed shear strength, a set-up factor should be considered to use a reduced of the shear strength in the original seabed.
A method for calibrating a laser profiling system for seafloor micro-topography measurements is described. The system consists of a digital camera and an arrangement of six red lasers that are mounted as a unit on a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The lasers project as parallel planes onto the seafloor, creating profiles of the local topography that are interpreted from the digital camera image. The goal of the calibration was to determine the plane equations for the six lasers relative to the camera. This was accomplished in two stages. First, distortions in the digital image were corrected using an interpolation method based on a virtual pinhole camera model. Then, the laser planes were determined according to their intersections with a calibration target. The position and orientation of the target were obtained by a registration process. The selection of the target shape and size was found to be critical to a successful calibration at sea, due to the limitations in the manoeuvrability of the ROV.
