The topography of the sea floor and textural characteristics of surface sediments are documented in areas off sectors 1,2, and 4 of the Saemangeum dyke and inside the dyke. These were investigated during the years 2002 to 2005, when the dyke construction almost came to an end, and were compared with natural topographic analogs before the dyke construction from the maritime maps of 1982 and 1994. Along and across the dyke are a number of erosional troughs formed by intensified currents during the dyke construction. The sea floor off sector 4 has undergone gradual accumulation of sands moving from the north by currents varying in direction from normal to parallel to the dyke. This is in a strong contrast with a slight erosional environment prevailing over the sea floor before dyke construction. off sectors 1 and 2, a topography with an alterative pattern of erosional troughs and sand shoals develops normal to the dyke. Eroded materials from the troughs seem to have added to the sand shoals. As a result, the troughs, former natural tidal channels, have become increasingly deeper, whereas the sand shoals have become somewhat shallower. The sea floor inside the dyke has also been remarkably shallower with expanding tidal flats due to trapping by the dyke of continuous sediment input from the Dongjin and Mangyeong rivers. Sands, all of which are considered to have originated originally from the two rivers, dominate the entire Saemangeum area.

Recently, the importance of highly accurate bathymetric data is greatly emphasized by the increased use of the ocean numerical models and research results in major areas such as ocean forecasting and natural disaster. There are domestic bathymetric data mainly used in ocean numerical models of Choi et al.(2002) and Seo (2008), but the production year is old and the data was created on the basis of nautical charts. Nautical charts are made for the purpose of navigation and based on the minimum depth from bathymetric data, so there is a limitation to reproduce the actual submarine topography. Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) produces nautical charts every year through continuous bathymetric survey, but no bathymetric data for numerical models have been produced. In this study, using the raw bathymetric survey data, we built an exclusive bathymetric dataset (BADA Ver.1) for ocean numerical models and compared it with published bathymetric data.

A system that extracts seabed topographic information by simultaneously and continuously observing the horizontal position and water depth in the sea by combining a single beam echosounder and GNSS was constructed. By applying the developed system to actual measurements of small-scale sea areas, the effectiveness of bathymetry and sea-floor topographic data acquisition using GNSS and echosounder was examined. By using the developed outdoor program DS-NAV and indoor program DS-CAD and applying the tide level data at the time of actual measurement of the target sea area, it was possible to derive bathymetry results based on the datum level i.e. approximate lowest low water level(A.L.L.W). By using the developed outdoor program DS-NAV and indoor program DS-CAD and applying the tide level data at the time of actual measurement of the target sea area, it was possible to derive the results of bathymetric survey based on the datum level. From database built through the actual measurement. it was possible to create 3D model of the sea-floor topography and extract cross-sections. The results of this study are expected to be economically useful for extracting seabed topographical information from small sea areas or in dredging sites for offshore construction.
Dmitri Donskoi, the Russian cruiser launched in 1883, is known to have sunk near Ulleung Island (East Sea, Korea) on May 29, 1905, while it was participating in the Russo-Japanese War. In order to find this ship, information about its possible location was obtained from Russian and Japanese maritime historical records. The supposed location of the ship was identified, and we conducted a five-year geophysical survey from 1999 to 2003. A reconnaissance three-dimensional topographic survey of the sea floor was carried out using multi-beam echo sounder, marine magnetometer, and side-scan sonar. An anomalous body identified through the initial reconnaissance survey was identified by a detailed survey using a remotely operated vehicle, deep-sea camera, and the mini-submarine Pathfinder. Interpretation of the acquired data showed that the ship is hanging on the side of a channel, at the bottom of the sea 400 m below sea level. The location is about 2 km from Port Jeodong, Uleung Island. We discovered 152 mm naval guns and other war materiel still attached to the hull of the ship. In addition, the remnants of the steering gear and other machinery that were burnt during the final action were found near the hull. Strong magnetic fields, resulting from the presence of volcanic rocks in the survey area, affected the resolution of the magnetic data gathered; as a result, we could not locate the ship reliably using the magnetic method. Severe sea floor topography in the gully around the hull gave rise to diffuse reflections in the side-scan sonar data, and this prevented us from identifying the anomalous body with the side-scan sonar technique. However, the sea-floor image obtained from the multi-bean echo sounder was very useful in verifying the location of the ship.

The circulation of the sea water in relation to the submarine topography is discussed using the oceanographic, current measurement and echo-sounding data obtained by R/V Odaesan in the waters adjacent to Kamchatka and Kurile Islands. The continental shelf which is approximately seventy-five kilometers wide at the east of Kamchata Peninsula becomes narrower at the Kurile Islands, and is cut, at the sea floor approximately twenty miles east of Onekotan Island, by a narrow, shallow sea channel extending from the depression in the Onekotan Strait, forming an elevation similar to a guyot. The measured current speed of approximately one knot in the Oyashio Current region east of Kurile Island is faster than that (0.5-0.7 knot) deduced by the dynamic computation of ocean current.

As there are many human activities in the coastal regions, various facilities and coastal engineering structures for protecting beach have been built. Dredging work, reclamation and harbor construction have caused the topography of sea floor to change rapidly. So sedimentation in the vicinity of the groins has get dull and the serious aspects sometimes turn up. Analyzing the surface sediments with transport vector model is one of the good methods to understand the sedimentation in the vicinity of the groins. I analyzed the transport vector of the surface sediments in the vicinity of the groins at the region where serious beach erosion happens near Pohang harbor.
The sedimentation pattern in Namhaepo Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment of western Korea, was investigated by means of analysing high-resolution seismic profiles, sediment samples, and tidal currents. Recent sediments up to 20 m which overlie the irregular surface of the acoustic basement. The sediments consist mainly of sandy silt and silt; the mean grain size of these sediments ranges from 4 to 5.5 phi, showing a shoreward-fining distribution pattern. This distribution pattern agrees are largely reversed during ebb, with a maximum velocity of 39 cm/sec. The calculated shear velocity of the tidal currents at sea bed ranges from 0.5 to 3.3 cm/sec during flood and from 0.7 to 2.5 cm/sec during ebb. The mean values of these velocities exceed the critical shear velocity for the silt particles. The data suggest that the tidal currents play an important role in the transportation and deposition of sediments in the bay and the surface topography of the sea floor is largely deter-mined by tidal sedimentation.

Seasonal changes of topography, sediment grain size and accumulation rate in the Gomso-Bay tidal flat, west coast of Korea, have been studied in order to understand the seasonal accumulation pattern and preservation potential of the tidal-flat sediments. Seasonal levelings across the tidal flat show that the landward movement of both intertidal sand shoals and cheniers accelerates during the winter and typhoon periods, but it almost stops in summer when mud deposition is instead predominant at the middle and upper tidal flats. Seasonal variations of mean grain size were largest on the upper part of middle tidal flat where summer mud layers were eroded during the winter and typhoon periods. Measurements of accumulation depths from sea floor to basal plate reveal that accumulation rates were seasonally controlled according to the elevation of tidal-flat surface. The upper tidal flat where the accumulation rate of summer was generally higher than that of winter was characterized by a continuous deposition throughout the entire year, whereas in the middle tidal flat, sediment accumulations were concentrated in winter relative to summer and were intermittently eroded by typhoons. The lower tidal flat were deposited mostly in winter and eroded during summer typhoons. Can cores taken across the tidal flat reveal that sand-mud interlayers resulting from such seasonal changes of energy regime are preserved only in the upper part of the deposits and generally replaced by storm layers downcore. Based on above results, it is suggested that the storm deposits by winter storms and typhoons would consist of the major part of the Gomso-Bay sediments.

This study presents Quaternary sedimentation pattern around Dok-Island volcanoes (Dok Island and Dok Seamount), based on analysis of high-resolution (chirp) echo characters. Echo facies If, showing sharp, continuous bottom echo without subbottom reflectors, is recorded mainly from the flat tops of the volcanoes. This facies indicates sands and gravels (re) deposited by shallow marine processes. Echo facies IIA in the basin floor and basal slopes of the volcanoes and Oki Bank is characterized by semi-prolonged bottom and several parallel subbottom echoes. This facies reflects hemipelagic settling with intermittent influences of turbidity currents in the slope areas. Echo facies IIC is recorded from acoustically-transparent debrite masses on the basal slopes of the volcanoes and Oki Bank. Echo facies IIIA is characterized by irregular hyperbolic echoes in the slope areas of the volcanoes. It suggests hard rock basement or irregular volcanic edifices. Echo facies IIIC shows regularly-overlapping hyperbolic bottom echoes. It is interpreted to represent rock-fall deposits (talus) accumulated in the mid-slope area. Echo characters and topography suggest that the tops of Dok-Island volcanoes were flattened and lowered by shallow-marine erosional processes. The eroded sediments were transported to and deposited in the base of slope and basin plain mainly by debris flows and turbidity currents along submarine canyons and valleys.
In situ capping technology for marine sediment pollution control has never been applied in South Korea. In this study a pilot project for the capping was carried out in Busan N Harbor. Pipeline and clamshell capping technologies were implemented for the pollution control. Changes of capping shapes, sediment contamination, and the time and costs required for the two constructions were compared. Both the pipeline and clamshell technologies were found to satisfy the target thickness of 50 cm on average. However, the pipeline method did not operate sensitively in terms of change of the sea floor topography, resulting in an uneven shape and a thickness. Organic carbon and ignition loss quite decreased after the pipeline or the clamshell capping while pH showed no significant change. Organic and residual fraction of Cd, Ni, and Zn in the sediments appeared to decrease after all cappings. The pipeline method took a construction time four times as much as the clamshell method. The clamshell method was demonstrated to reduce the construction cost by about 40% compared with the pipeline method. However, a monitoring for all the parameters needs to be conducted at least two years in order to better evaluate an efficiency of the pollution control by these capping constructions.
