Effect of Design Thinking-based STEAM Program for Primary and Secondary Students (초·중등학생을 위한 디자인적 사고기반의 STEAM교육 프로그램의 효과)

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of design thinking-based STEAM program for primary and secondary students. The design thinking-based STEAM program dealt with advanced scientific technology issues and it consisted of 8 topics. A questionnaire was developed to explore the change of Science concept awareness, Interest, Self-efficacy, Career consciousness of students through the program. The questionnaire consisted of following 4 areas, such as 'Science concept awareness', 'Interest', 'Career consciousness' and 'Self efficacy'. Pre-post test was conducted to 75 primary and secondary students. As a result of analyzing post-test compared to pre-test, 'Science concept awareness', 'Career consciousness' and 'Self efficacy' of students were improved. And the 'Interest' wasn't changed significantly. Through this research, it can be suggested that the design thinking-based STEAM program can be useful at school education to improve the Science concept awareness, Career consciousness and Self-efficacy of primary and secondary students. It is also proposed that further research of the various areas of interest and other affective variables will be needed.

Exploring the Effect of First Year Science-Focused School Program on High School Students' Science Core Competency and Science Learning Motivation Using Group-Based Trajectory Modeling (집단중심 추세모형을 이용한 과학중점학교 1학년 프로그램이 고등학생들의 과학과 핵심역량과 과학학습동기에 미치는 영향 탐색)

  • The study was conducted to identify if the first-year program of science-focused school improved students' scientific core competency and science learning motivation. The first-year program of the science-focused school consisted of basic education in scientific inquiry, investigation, advanced experiment, and basic education in small research. There were a total of 262 participants in the program, and 169 students took three survey tests. Through the analysis of a group-based trajectory modeling, students were differentiated based on similarity of score changes. This study showed that the first-year program of the science-focused school significantly improved students' scientific core competency and science learning motivation. A group-based trajectory modeling found that about 40~60% of students saw the effects of the program. The students who chose the humanity track showed effects, while some students who chose the science-focused track did not show effects. A group-based trajectory modeling showed the methodological effects of identifying the change process of individual students. This study identified the positive effects of science-focused school policy statistically and is a meaningful example for analyzing the effectiveness of science-focused school programs.

Comparison of the Expedited Programs for Innovative Drug Development and Approval among United States, European Union, and Republic of Korea (한국, 미국, 유럽의 혁신적 의약품 개발 및 허가제도 비교 연구)

  • Background: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) have been implementing the expedited programs that promote the innovative approval of new medications to be used for serious diseases. The authors comprehensively investigated, analyzed, and compared the regulations and guidelines associated with the expedited programs. Methods: The expedited programs for innovative drug development and approval were searched from the homepages of FDA, EMA and MFDS. The detailed information on the regulations and guidelines associated with the programs was comprehensively extracted from various electronic repositories of each regulatory authority. The information on each program was analyzed, categorized, and compared from the points of benefits, applicability with scientific rationale, application procedure, and maintenance. Results: FDA's programs include Fast Track Designation, Breakthrough Therapy Designation, Priority Review Designation, and Accelerated Approval. EMA's regulation implements PRIority MEdicines (PRIME), Accelerated Assessment, Marketing Authorization under Exceptional Circumstances (MAEC), and Conditional Marketing Authorization (CMA). MFDS has a single Expedited Program. These programs are broadly categorized into those that 1) facilitate early and proactive communication with regulatory authorities, 2) shorten the review time after submitting a marketing application, and 3) temporarily approve a marketing authorization under certain conditions. Conclusion: Each expedited program requires a different level and amount of safety and efficacy evidence to be submitted to each regulatory authority. This article will likely provide the comprehensive information on which program provides scientific and regulatory advantages to be taken for innovative medication development.

The Effects of Reflective Thinking promotion strategies using Thinking maps on Reflective thinking, Science academic achievement and Scientific attitudes of Elementary school students (생각 지도를 이용한 반성적 사고 촉진 전략이 초등학생의 반성적 사고, 과학 학업성취도 및 과학적 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the reflective thinking education so far and to improve the reflective thinking, academic achievement and scientific attitude of elementary school students. Two sixth grade classes were divided into two groups. Experimental group(13 boys, 11 girls) was treated with elementary science class using Reflective Thinking promotion strategies using Thinking maps and comparison group(14 boys, 10 girls) was treated with traditional way. The results of this study were as follows: First, reflective thinking strategy program using thinking maps has positively influenced the reflective thinking of elementary school students. Second, reflective thinking strategy program using thinking maps did not significantly affect elementary school students' academic achievement. Third, reflective thinking strategy program using thinking maps positively influenced elementary school students' scientific attitudes. Fourth, elementary school students' satisfaction with reflective thinking strategy programs using thinking maps was generally high. Most of students felt that this program was useful to learn, and to be interest in science. Based on these results, reflective thinking promotion strategies using thinking maps may be effective for reflective thinking and scientific attitudes of elementary school students.

Familial Breast Cancer Registry Program in Patients Referred to the Cancer Institute of Iran

  • Introduction: Annually a considerable number of people die because of breast cancer, a common disease among women also in Iran. Identifying risk factors and susceptible people can lead to prevention or at least early diagnosis. Among susceptibility risks, 5-10% of patients have a family history predisposing factor which can influence the risk of incidence among the family. Having a registry program can be a more practical way to screen high risk families for preventive planning. Method: Based on inclusion criteria, a questionnaire was prepared and after a pilot study on a small number of patients, actual data were collected on 400 patients and processed in SPSS 16.0. Results: Totally, 28.2%of the patients were younger than 40 years old and 36.8% had the included criteria for familial breast cancer (FBC). 102 patient's samples could be compared for receptor presentation. Similar to other studies, the number of triple negative breast cancers increased as the age decreased. Conclusion: The high percentage of patients with FBC among 400 cases in this study demonstrates that in order to design an infrastructural diagnostic protocol and screening of patients with FBC, a precise survey related to frequency and founder mutations of FBC is needed nationwide.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future (TLSF) program, an innovative teacher education and regular professional development by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) employing the curriculum analysis framework created by Posner. Using this framework the analyst found that the TLSF design is based on good research in regard to learning, teaching, and assessment now driving efforts to reform environmental teacher education. Ongoing development of the TLSF program in the research setting of an international level permits ever deeper connection with emerging curriculum theory and curriculum practice and allows new linkage as ideas are tested in research classrooms.

  • World state of the arts of the conservation of stone monuments is reviewed and the modern conservation program based on conservation science is proposed for the scientific conservation of stone monuments in Korea. The conservation program suggests that the site environment diagnosis, decay diagnosis, petrophysical property analysis, and conservation experiment should always be carefully studied before conservation treatment. It is an up-to-date widely accepted concept in the world of stone conservation science. Our urgent national tasks that should be accomplished for the scientific conservation of stone monuments in Korea are proposed in the following: 1) The stone monument conservation projects should be planned in accordance with 'Conservation Concept of Stone Cultural Properties' and executed in accordance with the proposed 'Conservation Program for Stone Cultural Property' based on conservation science. 2) It is proposed that 'National Institute of Conservation Science for Cultural Properties' be established for systematic conservation research on the tangible cultural properties. 3) The conservation projects of stone monuments should be executed under the control of stone conservation specialist for their quality control. 4) Special national budget should be prepared for quick development of researches on conservation science in Korea.

The Effects of Research Project Program on the Science Process Skills and Science-Related Attitudes of High School Students (과제연구 프로그램이 고등학생들의 과학 탐구능력 및 과학에 관련된 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of research project program of science process skills and science-related attitudes for high school students. This study were accompanied by 72 junior students of G High School who were reorganized as students whose research subject was closely related to chemistry. These students went through 28 periods of 14 sessions of research project program, were tested before and after the study on their science process skills and science-related attitudes. A simple questionnaire afterwards to get their thoughts on this program, was surveyed. The results are as follows. First, the research project program was effective in the science process skills (p<0.01). There was a statistically meaningful difference in the subcategory of deduction, setting up hypotheses, finding variables, building experiments, graphing and interpreting data. Although there was an increase in the average scores of prediction, operant definition, and generalization factors, it was not statistically meaningful (p>0.05). Second, the research project program showed an increase in the post-test of the science-related attitudes but was not statistically meaningful (p>0.05). In terms of subcategoty, the social importance of science, criterion of scientists, application of scientific attitude, and enjoyment of science classes were statistically meaningful (p<0.05). Third, according to the survey of research project program, there was an increase in creating a research problem and solving it by oneself as well as in participating with other teammates to solve a problem. But the most difficult thing was when the experiment failed during the research was processing. The curiosity and interest, towards objects around all lives and science classes after the program done, were increased.

The Relationship between Self-Directedness and Scientific Creativity of Science-Gifted Elementary Students (초등과학영재학생의 자기주도성과 과학창의성의 관계)

  • This study analyzed the relationship between self-directedness of science-gifted elementary students and their expression of scientific creativity in science-gifted class. A science-gifted program on the topic of Hydraulic Machine was implemented to 34 fifth-graders in the Science-Gifted Education Center of an education office in Seoul, Korea for four weeks. The self-directedness of the gifted students was divided into three types of 'General, Scientific, and Topic-Related Self-Directedness'. The products of the students' activities were assessed by using a scientific creativity assessment formula. Qualitative research, such as analysis of observations and interviews, was also conducted in order to identify characteristics that were not apparently revealed by quantitative data. The main results of this study are as follows: First, science-gifted elementary students' general self-directedness and their scientific creativity were significantly correlated (r=.373). Second, the students' scientific self-directedness and scientific creativity did not have a significant correlation (r=.294). Third, there was a positive correlation between the students' topic-related self-directedness and their expression of scientific creativity. Their self-rated scores (r=.420) for the topic-related self-directedness and the number of activity types associated with the topic had a positive correlation (r=.350). Fourth, the students were categorized into four groups according to the levels of their self-directedness and scientific creativity, and the result showed that Type HH (high self-directedness and high scientific creativity) was the most common type (15 students, 38.5%), followed by Type LL (low self-directedness and low scientific creativity) (11 students, 28.2%). Eight (20.5%) and five students (12.8 %) belonged to Type LH (low self-directedness and high scientific creativity) and Type HL (high self-directedness and low scientific creativity) respectively. Fifth, the classroom observation of the students in groups revealed that groups with more number of Type HH demonstrated better cooperation and performance. Sixth, the analysis results of the observation were almost matched to the results of the self-directedness and scientific creativity tests. The students with higher self-directedness demonstrated active class participation and good cooperative skills. The students with higher scientific creativity had a tendency to generate creative ideas more frequently in given situations. Seventh, dynamic activities were perceived as enjoyable and exciting by 76.9% of the students, but static activities that require creativity were regarded as interesting only by 23.1% of the students. Among the students who were satisfied with both the creative and static activities, Type HH accounted for the largest proportion (55.6%). In conclusion, factors such as students' interests, initiatives, and attitudes displayed through voluntary participations originated from their own daily life can predict the degree of scientific creativity associated with the topic. Also, when students were categorized into four types according to the level of self-directedness and scientific creativity, there was a tendency of active behavior in class, cooperative skill, and activity satisfaction. This suggested that we should consider self-directedness and scientific creativity in selecting the gifted, grouping them in class, and designing and executing programs for science-gifted elementary students.

A Study on the TPM for Performance Management of Weapon System R&D Program (무기체계 연구개발 사업의 성능관리를 위한 기술성과측정에 관한 연구)

  • In order to successfully manage of the state-of-the-art weapon system R&D program which are under the limited budget and schedule but also has a high level of technical risks, it is gaining weights to use such a scientific program management tool as TPM. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to review the concept of the TPM and its relation among MOE, MOP and TPM, and introduce an application method of TPM mainly focusing on helicopter development program. It has the organized structure, detailed procedure and 282 parameters for performance management through the TPM.
