The purpose of this study is to develop geological field sites for open ended education and inquiry learning, and to find the influence of field study on the affective domain in science and the achievement. As for the field sites, we used the areas ranging from Chaeseokgang- of Kyeokpo, in Buan, to around Bangsanje from Naejang-dong in Jeongeup to Ssangchi-myun in Sunchang-kun, Jeolla North Province. The affective domain in science is composed of three parts-cognition of science, interests toward science, and the scientific attitudes. to evaluate the stage of the achievement, we used questionnaire composed by 25 items. While the control group does not show any change in three parts of the affective domain, the experimental group shows positive changes, from 2.44 to 2.37 (cognition of science), from 3.15 to 3.08 (interests toward science), and from 2.91 to 2.74 (scientific attitudes) on Likert Scale. Also the score arranged by the analysis of covariate shows that the experimental group is more positive than the control group by 0.12 point in cognition of science, by 0.15 point in interests toward science, and by 0.23 point in scientific attitudes. In terms of the stage of achievement, the score of the experimental group, which is arranged by analysis of covariate, is 7.68 higher than that of the control group, on maximum of 100.

This study seeks to explore high school students' changing attitudes toward science-related career choices with focus on the scientific career cultural capital perspective. We developed a questionnaire and surveyed female high school students. We used the survey results to explore the scientific career cultural capital factors and characteristics of the students who have chosen a science-related career. We selected twelve participants through science-related career choice type and then conducted in-depth interviews with them. Through the in-depth interviews, we explored how the factors of scientific career cultural capital affect the students' career choices. The result shows that the students developed internal resources through norms of obligation and reciprocity within the structure (family, school, community) based on external resources. The internal resources affected their science-related career choice. In elementary school, the students' interests in science and science-related occupations are the most influential in their choice of career directions. In high school, however, the students also considered career cognition, aptitude cognition, and career-value factors in their career choices. The interests in science were formed mainly due to education activity and daily-life activity. Over time, education activity's effect increased. The interests in science-related occupations were formed mainly due to daily-life activity during elementary school. In high school, the interests in science-related occupations formed due to diverse internal and external resources. Students who maintained a science-related career attracted external resources. Furthermore, they reinforced internal resources through interacting with various external resources. This study has implications for science education concerning students' science-related career choices.
This study is intended to investigate the frequency of scientific writing tasks in Korean and American science textbooks, to compare the differences in types of posing the writing tasks according to the level of the children's scientific cognition, and to analyze the differences in the organization and development of writing ones of each chapter and thus to propose an effective way of presenting scientific writing in science textbooks. Korean 'Science' and 'Experiment Observation Workbook'and Macmillan Mcgraw-Hill(MMH) Science for fourth graders were analyzed for the purpose. The results are as follows: First, Korean textbooks contain more science writing tasks per pages, and less per chapters than MMH one. Both text books provide balanced amount of science writing tasks, yet MMH especially does systematic exercises for each chapter. Second, the qualitative analysis of the textbooks' scientific writing shows that both textbooks contain a significant amount of "understanding" and "explanatory" writing, which reflects that the purpose of writing in science textbooks is leaning towards acquiring and verifying scientific concepts. In American textbooks, however, writings utilizing extensive cognition process and materials are also present. It is necessary for textbooks to present diverse and expressive writing assignments including personal opinions. Third, there are differences in organization and development of science writing tasks. Science writing tasks in Korean textbooks are present independently with lesson objectives of the chapters and practices, while those in MMH are systematically developed. Based on these results, it is necessary to systemize the textbooks' way of presenting writing tasks for effective teaching and learning. By organizing the writing materials and thus developing diverse materials, and by implementing extensive cognitive process in the writing activities, textbooks will be able to contribute in attracting the students' interests and in improving their scientific knowledge.
Recently, statement of Intent for ILN has been signed by 9 countries including Korea, initiated March of this year by NASA which invited countries having lunar exploration plans. Concept of ILN is placing several core set of instrumentation on the Moon, in order to maximize scientific return to all of the participants. Network measurements from various nodes on lunar surface is essential for understanding internal structure of the Moon and environment around the Moon. Currently, Core Instrument Working Group is discussing the scientific interests and instrumentation among participated countries. Korea also is looking over various ways to participate ILN. We will introduce the progress and possible lunar science of ILN and will discuss the science mission objectives.

Advent of lasers offering high intensity beam has opened the glass to the nonlinear optic (NLO). The high electric field associated with such laser beams can be so large that high order components of the glass polarization can be measured. Such development is of scientific and technological interests in particular in systems involving an intensity-dependent refractive index and/or ultra-fast response (<10$\^$-12/s). From a scientific viewpoint the NLO response intensity must be understood as a function of the glass composition. On the other hand, large family of applications are presently under investigation in various fields of optical materials or systems e.g. laser glasses for fusion energy, soliton propagation for ultra-long distances, ultra-fast-switching, optical storage etc....(omitted)
This paper proposes an approach in Southeast Asian studies using a post-colonial framework in the study of post-colonial Southeast Asia. This framework is based on the sociology of knowledge that analyzes the dialectical relationship between science, ideology, and discourse. Post-colonial studies is critical of the concept of universality in science and posits that a scientific statement of a society cannot stand alone, but is made by authors themselves who produce, use, and claim the so-called scientific statement. Several concepts in post-colonial theories can be used to develop area studies, i.e. colonial discourse, subaltern, mimicry, and hybridity. Therefore, this study also explores these concepts to develop a more comprehensive understanding of Southeast Asian culture. The development of post-colonial theories can be used to respond to the hegemony of social theories from Europe and the United States. The main contribution of area studies in the field of the social sciences and humanities is in revealing the hidden interests behind the universal social sciences.

This thesis is to discuss and prove the identity of the acts of the library and the character of the library which regards these as its objects. And this study is analyzed in view of per ceptual problems and scientific problems and scientific problems, in order to make clear the character of the acts of the library. In these processes, some basic propositions are extracted. First, culture can be found in arranged order. Second, human being can create culture by the acquisition of accmulated culture. Third, an individual is purposely related with culture. Fourth, culture is antonomous to mankind. And in this thesis, library science is defined as the systematic formation of mankind's pursuing acts, and to identify this definition, some theoretical models of library science have been offered as follows : Model I 1. Theory of making culture assets informative. 2. Theory of making culture assets empirical; that of imformation treatment. 3. Theory of medial acts of librarians. Model II 4. Theory of organic systems of libraries. Model III 5. Theory of guiding school activities. 6. Theory of extending the inhabitants' interests of communities. 7. Theory of a kind of resources in social improvement. Model IV 8. Theory of a means of principal approach to the succession of culture. In conclusion, this study is to prove that acts of libraries are the universal ones of those human being that are gualified to be the unique means to the creation of culture and, library science is a science that shapes concepts and rules to describe, to make explanation and to foretell these acts.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of question-generating strategy on science academic achievement, scientific attitude in elementary science class. To examine the effects of question-generating strategy this learning materials were applied to elementary science curriculum, and an experimental group and a control group were selected from $5^{th}$ graders at H elementary school located in Gyeonggi-do. Students were taught for 6 weeks. Control group take traditional lessons and solve questions presented textbook. Question generated group generate questions, solve them and feed back by themselves. The results of this study were found statistically significant difference in the pupil's enhancement of the science academic achievement, scientific attitude (p<.05). Thus question-generating strategy for elementary science inquiry instruction that has a positive effect on interests in class is useful and better be widely applied to science education.
This study examined the instructional influences of MBL programs on elementary school students' science achievement, scientific inquiry skills, and science learning motivation. The perceptions of students and their teacher toward science classes using MBL programs were also examined. The subject of this study was sixty four 4th grade students from two classes. The experimental group engaged in science classes that applied MBL and the control group engaged in traditional science classes based on the textbook and experiment workbook. As results, there was no significant difference in academic achievement, scientific inquiry skills, however, were significantly higher for the experiment group compared to the control group. There was also significant difference in the relevance and confidence, the sub-categories of science learning motivation. In the analyses of students' perceptions toward science classes using MBL, students showed positive perceptions in aspects of interests of science classes, content comprehension, and convenience of experiments. The teacher also showed positive perceptions using MBL in elementary science classes. Educational implications of appling MBL in elementary science classes were discussed.

Many topics in science, especially, abstract concepts, relationships, properties, entities in invisible ranges, are described in mathematical representations such as formula, numbers, symbols, and graphs. Although the mathematical representation is an essential tool to better understand scientific phenomena, the mathematical element is pointed out as a reason for learning difficulty and losing interests in science. In order to further investigate the relationship between mathematics knowledge and science understanding, the current study examined 793 high school students' understanding of the pH value. As a measure of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution, the pH value is an appropriate example to explore what a student mathematical structure of logarithm is and how they interpret the proportional relationship of numbers for scientific explanation. To the end, students were asked to write their responses on a questionnaire that is composed of nine content domain questions and four affective domain questions. Data analysis of this study provides information for the relationship between student understanding of the pH value and related mathematics knowledge.
