  • In recent times, artists rely increasingly on science and technology, whereas scientists frequently use such an aesthetic tenn like 'eauty.' This shows that the gap between the 'two cultures' are narrowing down due to the necessity of both sides. The historical interaction between science and art has been extensively discussed by the historians of art and those of science. As the complexities of scientific and artistic practices were uncovered, similarities between them were also revealed. The goals of this paper, which explores the relationship and interactions between science and art, are the following three. The first is to bridge the gap between the two cultures (i.e., science and art) by disclosing the mutual influences between them. Second, drawing on recent works on the nature of scientific and artistic creativity, this paper aims to show some similarities and even common factors between scientific and artistic creativity. Finally, by highlighting similarities and common elements between scientific and artistic creativity, this paper will emphasize the role of imagination, insight, emotion and visualization not only in art but also in science.

  • In recent years, a new way of differentiating product design has emerged -better known as 'masterpiece marketing,' this is a strategy where famous art pieces are borrowed on to product designs. Because the recent trends of well-being and LOHAS have encouraged the consumers' desires to enjoy culture and live a more opulent lifestyle, famous and notable paintings have grown to be more of "approachable masterpieces" to the public. As a strategy intended to develop a new consumerism, while still prioritizing customers' values and their satisfaction, companies have been drawn to this new type of marketing. The current consumption society has converted renowned art pieces from simply works of 'high culture' to a further way of marketing, aimed to differentiate products and dominate the market. Though many products have had masterpieces applied to their designs and have been noticed for their marketability, there has been less systematic research done on the scientific background behind this marketing approach. This research focused on the art pieces' fundamental nature of inducing emotions in the viewer, and hypothesized about how the evaluation of a product may be influenced by the affect provoked by the art piece used. To be more specific, if art pieces with different levels of pleasure and arousal -the two axis of emotion suggested by existing research on emotion -were used on each product, the goal was to see how the different levels influenced the consumer's assessment of the products, focusing on product's type as well as the evaluation of their attributes. First, a pretest was done to verify the relationship between the emotion provoked by the art piece and the consumer's preference. There were two types of surveys, each with five drawings from the ten that were assumed to differ in levels of the two axis of emotion. The survey was composed of questions asking for positive emotion, negative emotion, level of arousal, and preference. The correlation between the measurements of positive and negative emotions was -0.792, so an integrated entry was used in the analysis by subtracting the measurement of negative emotions from that of positive emotions. The first hypothesis that paintings that provoke positive emotions will be more preferred than paintings that bring out negative emotions was supported; and through this research, paintings that were to be used for the products were selected. The second pretest was conducted to settle on an item that would be used in the research. Items meant to measure utilitarian and hedonic attributes of milk and chocolate, the two products to be used in the research, were extracted. Because milk is a utilitarian product with strong practical attributes while chocolate is a hedonic product with strong hedonic attributes, these two were selected to be used in this research. The first study was executed to see if there is a difference in attitude about products that have different painting on their designs, which either induces positive or negative emotions. It was also to verify whether this difference in attitude was mediated by the viewer's preference for the art piece. This study showed that when positive emotion inducing painting was used, the product was better evaluated compared to the product with a painting that provokes a negative emotion, thus supporting the second hypothesis. It was also supported that the effect of affect on product evaluation was mediated by preference for the art piece. The second study was done to see the influence of the level of arousal on the evaluation of the product's attributes. Art pieces that differ in the level of arousal were selected through the pretest, and later it verified the hypothesis that the level of arousal has an effect on the assessment of the attributes of the product. In the case of milk, a utilitarian product, the fourth hypothesis that a high-arousal painting will better evaluated for its hedonic attributes was supported, as well as the fifth, which hypothesized that a low-arousal painting will receive a higher assessment for its utilitarian attributes. However, for chocolate, a hedonic product, both fourth and fifth hypotheses were not supported. This study is significant for the following basis: first, it verified the importance of the emotion induced by the painting on the evaluation of the product's attributes, by applying a systematic and scientific method. Second, it expanded from the existing research on positive/negative emotions to confirm the additional influence of the state of arousal on product evaluation.

  • Crop Protection Products (CPPs) are a useful weapon in our fight against the pests, diseases and weeds that harm or destroy our food. To be effective CPPs need to exhibit some persistence. The consequence of this is that residues of the original material or its metabolites may remain on food and thus there is a potential for the intake of such residues. The issue of CPP residues in food is an emotional subject and is rarely debated rationally or supported by scientific facts. Media headlines like “Poison in our food” or “These days enough Pesticides (CPPs) are sprayed onto vegetables to turn you into one” are testimony to the high level of emotion that surrounds the subject of CPP residues in food. Recent surveys of consumers have indicated that more than 80 percent view CPP residues in food as a “serious hazard”. This significantly exceeds concerns over drugs, hormones in meat, nitrates in food, irradiated foods, food additives, or artificial colours.

  • This study is a scientific approach to psychological factors such as emotional stability among various effects of forest resources. In order to carry out this study, the experiment was conducted on the subjects by setting the forest healing space as various spaces. The subjects who participated in this experiment were the students in their twenties and the average age was 22±1.25 years. The subjects were assessed for emotional words through subjective sequence evaluation in different designated forest healing spot. In addition, the emotional states that they actually perceived were measured by measuring the bio-signals to their perceived emotions. BMP, SDNN, VLF, LF, HF, Amplitude, and PPI were used for the bio-signal reaction experiment applied to this study. The results of this experiment were measured by Friedman test and Wilcoxon test for statistical analysis. n this study, 'good', 'clear', and 'uncomfortable' words were found statistically significant at the spot of forest healing space for subjective emotional vocabulary. In addition, SDNN, HF and Amplitude were statistically significant in the results of quantitative bio-signal measurement at each spot in the forest healing space. Based on the results of this study, we can suggest the application direction and strategic utilization plan of forest healing spot and forest resource utilization field. This is not only a guide for the users who use the facility through the spatial facilities and physical requirements for the emotion based forest-healing, but also can be used as a personalized emotional space design aspect.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop teaching program which utilizes emotional intelligence elements as a measure to stimulate the motive and scientific attitude of learners and examine the effect of its application. The target unit for this study is 'world of plants' in the fourth grade of elementary school, and the teaching program is composed of 3 stages including I(encounter with myself), S(encounter with science), and U(encounter with friends). The teaching program is organized in the way to reflect 5 emotional intelligence elements including self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation, sympathy, and personal relations properly according to each stage of teaching program. The result of applying this program into actual classrooms is as follows. First, it is proven that the teaching program actually helps improving the motive of learners to study science. The emotional intelligence takes a role of positive motive for thinking, and the learners monitor their emotion and behavior patterns by using a mirror notebook to reduce their anxiety about science. Second, it is proven that the teaching program changes the science related attitude of learners positively. The emotional intelligence elements help the learners to create friendly feeling toward science subject and have a friendly attitude toward science and a sense of expectancy to science class. Third, it is proven that the teaching program contributes to the improvement of learners' science study achievement. The emotional intelligence takes an important role in improving the learners' science study achievement through the role of adjusting and controlling the recognition capability. However, emphasizing the emotional intelligence excessively also has a risk to break the balance between emotion and recognition, so it is considered that the balanced approach should be applied.

  • Minimalism is an increasingly popular lifestyle in which people deliberately seek to live with fewer possessions. However, little scientific research has been done to examine the relationships between minimalism, social value, and happiness. Two recent studies have investigated whether critical components of minimalism, such as subtraction and decluttering could lead to changes in social values and happiness. In Study 1, the participants were presented with pictures of unstable Lego structures for which they were asked to create ideas to resolve problems, either through adding new supports or removing the existing ones. Participants with a stronger tendency to use subtractive transformations reported higher happiness scores. In addition, higher scores in intrinsic value preferences were correlated with higher levels of happiness. In Study 2, cuing minimalism or consumerism using pictures led to changes in materialistic values, motivation for social engagement, and reported happiness scores. These results imply that minimalism as an alternative lifestyle can contribute to social wellbeing and increased happiness. Limitations and implications for future studies are discussed.

  • Through the converging concept of 'an actor doctor,' this paper deals with an actor and its double, the emotional care giver. In the first place, actor doctors have appeared in the medical scene as hospice volunteers. But, as a developing project, the concept of 'an actor doctor' leads to a professional emotional specialist who works at hospitals during the day and performing at the stage at night. In our contemporary culture, our emotional life is threatened by various social and environmental stimuli. The role of 'an emotional specialist' in our everyday life and hospitals is very essential to our healthy life. Against the backgrounds of the high emotional intelligence and the systemic training, actors are qualified to embody this social vision. From the perspectives of performance studies and cognitive studies, this paper tries scientific explanations of the role, the function, and the techniques of an actor doctor. By doing so, this paper seeks to build a scientific foundation for an actor doctor as an emotional specialist.

  • This paper analyzes patterns of various characters in an animation story. Animation characters are the important element in a story. They reflect social facts and work an element showing internal aspects of human-beings. At first we need enough scientific basis to understand the development of these characters. Therefore, this paper analyzes the characters of 19 Disney animation on the basis of character disorder in abnormal psychoanalysis and establishes database of animation characters. This database can be a help to the develoment of new characters. Also, I think that characters inclination can be applied to fostering Emotion and education of animation audiences.
