In this study, the attitudes of about 1200elementary and secondary students towards sciences lessons and scientists were investigated. For the survey of this study, simillar numbers of students in Seoul were selected from the 5th, 8th and 11th grades and from both sexes. For the attitudes towards science lessons, in the survey questionnaire, there were questions on the type of science lesson which students prefer and on student's assessment of science lessons which they receive. For the attitudes towards scientists, there were questions on scientists whom students respect, on students assessment of scientists and on students assessment of themselves. Results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) A great majority of students prefered the laboratory-based to classroom-based lessons, but this tendency was less apparent in olderstudents.More boys, compared with girls, prefered laboratory-based study. (2) The student's assessment of science lessons was positive in the elementary school, neutral in the middle school and negative in the high school level. Boys showed more positive attitudes towards the study of science. (3) Apparently more girls than boys mentioned Madam Curie as a scientist whom they respect, Students tended to respect scientists in terms of their personalities rather than their cognitive abilities. (4) Students tended to assess that scientist's are more able than themselves in cognitive areas while themselves are better in affective areas. The gap between student's asessments of scientists and that of themselves became bigger in high school students. The gap between boy's assessments of themselves and girl's assessments of themselves was bigger in high school level than in middle school. (5) The decline of students attitude towards science lessons was bigger than their attitude towards scientists.
The purpose of this study is to investigate science teachers' orientation toward scientific inquiry-based teaching. In this study, five middle school science teachers formed and participated in a teacher learning community for scientific inquiry-based instruction during one year. Data collection consisted of pre and post questionnaire and interviews, audio-recordings of teachers' collaborative lesson planning and reflection on teaching practice, and field notes of participant teachers' teaching practice and follow-up interviews. Data analysis indicated that there were four orientations toward scientific inquiry-based teaching. They were knowledge and beliefs about 'goals of scientific inquiry-based teaching', 'scientific inquiry-based teaching and learning', 'argumentation-based teaching and learning', and 'nature of science and science inquiry'. Teachers' collaboration in a teacher learning community would be effective in facilitating teachers' orientation to scientific inquiry-based teaching.

Science drama can be an useful tool for understanding the nature of science, Science-Technology-Society relationship by providing indirect experiences to young students. Specific science concept and knowledge can also be learned with high interests. In this study, to explore the usefulness of science drama in elementary science lessons, two scripts of science drama and lesson plans were developed and implemented. Six step model for science drama lessons was also suggested. One was 'Manhattan Project' which dealt with social, ethical responsibility in using science & technology (science argument drama), and the other was 'Mom, My blood type is O' which explained the heredity of blood type (science concept drama). Two teachers were asked to write their journals during preparation and implementation of science drama lessons, and the lessons were observed by the researcher and video taped for analysis. Some students were interviewed just after the lessons by the teacher and all students were asked to write their impressions, change of their thought, what is leant etc. Overall responses of students and teachers on the two science drama lessons were very positive, 'Mom, My blood type is O' got more positive responses, and girls were more positive than boys. Some students anticipated another science drama even suggest topics for it. 'Mom, My blood type is O' was successful in making students (grade 3) understand the knowledge related with heredity of blood type (71% of the students got perfect answer). In 'Manhattan Project' students (grade 5) perceived more diverse location of responsibility after the lesson, but the danger and harmfulness of atomic power was embossed. This implied the need of more careful planning for the relevant learning activities before and after the play of science drama. Two teachers perceived the science drama as a new, useful tool for some subject which is hard to deal with by other teaching method. They were also satisfied with students' high interest and engagement during the science drama lessons but the extra time and effort for the lessons were pointed out as a main difficulties.

In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of Pedagogical Content knowledge(PCK)'s components through actual course of teachers of science gifted students in the middle school. For this study, four middle school science teachers of gifted students belonging to the gifted education professional organizations in a metropolis were selected, each of them was physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science teacher. Two of them were full-time teachers to teach only gifted students and two were part-time teachers who had taught general students in ordinary time and specially had taught the gifted students once a week. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documents. As a result, some unique characteristics of PCK's components were identified. The teachers' orientations to teaching science were closely correlated with PCK's components. The teachers' knowledges of science curriculum were different individually. But the decisions about type of teaching(acceleration or enrichment) were connected with the objectives of gifted education and lesson objectives. Also, the teachers' knowledges of science curriculum were influenced by the knowledge of students' understanding. Teachers used different instructional strategies according to the knowledge of science curriculum and the knowledge of students' understanding. We found that PCK's components were so closely connected and could show the direction of relationships among those PCK's components. We suggested teachers' PCK model which was named "Tetrahedron Model of PCK", to explain the characteristics and relationships of PCK's components.

In this study, the texts of science textbooks of the past 20 years were collected in order to systematically carry out researches on scientific languages and scientific terms that have not been noticed in science education. We have collected all the science textbooks from elementary school to high school in the 6th curriculum, the 7th curriculum, and the 2009 revised curriculum, and constructed a corpus comprising of 132 textbooks in total. Sequentially, a raw corpus, a morphological annotated corpus, and a semantic annotated corpus of science terms, were constructed. The final constructed science textbook corpus was named K-STeC (Korean Science Textbook Corpus). K-STeC is a semantic annotated corpus with semantic classification and classification of scientific terms, together with meta information of bibliographic information such as curriculum, subject, grade, and publisher, location information such as chapter, section, lesson, page, and sentence, and structure information such as main, inquiry activities, reference materials, and titles. Throughout the three-year study period, a new research method was created by integrating the know-how of the three fields of linguistic informatics, computer science and science education, and a large number of experts were put in to produce labor-intensive results. This paper introduces new research methodologies and outcomes by looking at the whole research process and methods, and discusses the possibility of future development of scientific language research and how to use the results.
This study analyzed discourse types and meaning making strategies used in a secondary beginning science teacher's class. A voluntary middle school science teacher participated in this study, and her instruction was observed and videotaped. The analysis consisted of two parts. First, we categorized the types of discourses occurred in class. Second, we examined her instructional strategies used through meaning making practices at the micro-level. Results indicated that there were five episodes emerged representing different discourse types and meaning making strategies in the beginning teacher's lesson about 'the pathway and property of light'. Conclusion and implications for further study and teacher professional development were presented in the paper.
The purpose of this study was to examine interactions among components of pedagogical content knowledge of middle school science teachers in a teacher learning community targeting science practice-based instruction. Data collection consisted of pre and post questionnaire and interview with each of five science teachers, audio-recording of teacher discussion in a teacher learning community, lesson plans, teacher written reflection, and video-recording of teaching practice. Qualitative data analysis revealed that there were two types of interactions, i.e., one-way interaction and two-ways interaction among components of pedagogical content knowledge of science teachers in a teacher learning community. There were also consecutive interactions as well as one-shot interaction. For two-ways interaction there were synchronous two-ways interaction in a teacher learning community meeting as well as consecutive two-ways interaction along with several meetings. This study provides implications that collaborative learning context in a teacher learning community should stimulate various types interactions among components of pedagogical content knowledge.
The purpose of this study was to examine the change of the beginning science teachers' perception change through the mentoring program. Participants in this study were four mento-teachers, one university professor, two teachers in doctor, two teacher in doctor's or master's course, and four mentee-teachers who had less than three years teaching experience. We performed five times one to one mentoring for a year. We collected data such as video recordings of mentee-teacher's classes, lesson plans, recording of one to one mentoring and transcription, mento and mentee journals, preliminary-interim-post interview and transcription, and RTOP class observation report. Based on the result of this study, five times mentoring over a year changed mentee-teacher's perception and their teaching practice.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Environmental literacy and STEAM Attitude through the use of the Eco-STEAM program for elementary students. For the purpose of this study, a teaching plan and worksheet for students using Eco-STEAM Programs was developed and applied. Through the questionnaires and the analysis of students' outcomes, the effects on Environmental literacy and STEAM Attitude in both quality and quantity were verified. The results of this study are as follows: First, the improvement in the Environmental Literary score has statistically meaningful difference(p<.05). Second, the change in students' STEAM attitude by applying the Eco-STEAM program has statistically meaningful difference (p<.05). Third, according to the analysis of a questionnaire used to evaluate the program, students had a positive perception of the STEAM program and gained higher level of satisfaction about the lesson. Therefore, Eco-STEAM Program applied in this study might be useful to improve Environmental Literacy, and can be expected to improve STEAM literacy and should be widely applied to Science education.
This study aims at investigating basic safety consciousness as preprocessing of the establishment of experience-oriented safety education center in which citizens can have positive and active experience education, based on the data for which the investigators have investigated and analyzed such citizens' safety consciousness as awareness, consciousness and feedback of national safety accident, systematic prevention of safety accident and necessity of first-aid when safety accident happens, focused on citizens in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do where more than 1/3 of the national population live, for the purpose of establishing experience-oriented education center where citizens can be taught to prevent accidents wisely, picking up experiences of large or small accidents up to now. And the findings from the study support the followings : 1) Ordinary people think that danger factors have prevailed in our entire society, and fear that the danger may come to them directly.2) Ordinary people's consciousness of safety accident is low, that is because selfishness and 'take-it-easy' manner have prevailed in our entire society. 3) Ordinary people have the dread of safety accident individually, but they don't know how to deal with safety accident when it happened. 4) Although most people have taken lessons about safety accident, they still feel the need to have systematic education about safety accident. 5) Children and survey-respondents are highly concerned with prevention of safety accident, but there were few people who sent their children to 'safety accident prevention program by outside institute', still less they didn't participate in the above program. And especially they complained a lot about safety education conducted by school. 6) Most people truly felt the need that they should have experience-oriented safety education center to be able to see, hear and experience. The considerations (or suggestions) resulting from the above findings from the study will turn out that people will need such recreation facilities, rest and play space that the family can enjoy as space for the prevention of safety accident, appliance for field lesson and space for developed program, and in light of visitors' convenience, safer and more convenient vehicle service will have to be offered.
