To find out the reference data of the school food service system, I serveyed four primary schools in Seoul, Korea and Nara, Japan respectively. The school children and their parents of whom arbitrary selected two classes among each primary school, were taken the questionaire about the present school food service system and their favorate food. The results were as follows; 1) 74.8% of Korean and Japanese children, and 92.5% of their parents were in favor of school food service. 2) Korean childrin wanted more amount of food and less salty taste. 3) Korean and Japanese children and their parents believed that the school food service system correct children's unbalanced diet. 4) Korean children wished more kinds of foods, western-styled cooking and that the food would be served in warm state. 5) Korean parents wanted that school food service system should be natural and better quality food material, and teacher should educate good eating habit. 6) Korean school children prefer yogurt, cuttle-fish, chicken, bean-curd, tomato, orange, dried laver, sweet potato, pine-mushroom in each food group. In conclusion, school food service system should be enough to meet children's good nutrition status, and the menu would be selected with consideration of children's preference and Korean traditional diet habit. Good table manner and eating all kinds of foods should be targht by school food service system as well as preparing good quality of food.
Using data from the Panel Study on Korean Children, this study investigated whether children with high levels of problem behaviors adjusted more poorly on the $1^{st}-grade$ than children with low levels of problem behaviors, and whether there was evidence of intra-individual stability in behavior problems over time. Data were analyzed by use of the Latent Growth Model and group differences analyses. Three findings were noteworthy. First, there was evidence of intra-individual and inter-individual variability in behavior problems between poor- and non-poor household children. Second, children with higher initial levels of internalizing and externalizing behaviors at 4 years had lower school readiness scores at 6 years. Finally, children with lower levels of school readiness at 6 years had lower school adjustment scores in $1^{st}$ grade. The results discuss implications for future research and policies for preschool children. With mediating effect of school readiness, developmental trajectories of child's problem behavior have been found to be predictors of delayed achievements in school. The results show that intervention programs are necessary for children with high levels of problem behavior. This study also showed that children who experienced poverty at home could have more difficulties in school readiness and school adjustment.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of elementary school children's stress and coping behavior in urban and rural areas. The subject included 286 children selected from 4 elementary schools in urban and rural areas. The instruments included the children's stress index and coping behavior questionnaire of the elementary school children. The statistics used from this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA(Duncan test), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed significant differences between urban and rural children's stress in school attainment domain, teacher-school domain, home environment domain and surroundings domain. And urban and rural children was different in active, passive/avoidant and aggressive coping behavior. The stress of urban's children was influenced significantly by the grade and school attainment variales, and the rural children's stress was influenced significantly by the gender variable. The coping behavior of urban's children was influenced by the gender, grade and school attainment variables, and also the rural children's coping behavior was influenced by the above variables. Correlation analysis indicated that children's stress and aggressive coping behavior were relative positive high correlation in urban areas, and children's stress and passive/avoidant coping behavior were positive high correlation in rural areas. It was also found that school attainment, aggressive coping behavior and passive/avoidant coping behavior were significant predictors of urban children's stress, and gender, passive/avoidant coping behavior and aggressive coping behavior were significant predictors of rural children's stress.
The purpose of this study investigated the effects of personal variables(gender, grade, self-esteem, and depression) and family variables(economical level, marital conflict, and parenting behaviors) on the children's school adjustment(school interest, academic achievement, observance of school regulation, and friend relationship) of children in divorced families. The participants were 165 children in divorced families(73 boys and 92 girls). The results were as follows. First, children's school interest was affected by depression, self-esteem and grade. Second, children's academic achievement was affected by depression and grade. Third, children's observance of school regulation was affected by gender, grade, self-esteem, and parenting behaviors. Fourth, children's friend relationship was affected by depression, parenting behaviors, self-esteem, and gender. Fifth, children's school adjustment was more influenced on children's personal variables than children's family variables.
This study examined the satisfaction level and effects of after-school program cooking activities in children of multicultural families. A total of 135 children of general and multicultural families from 3th to 6th grades and their 11 teachers were surveyed, and 75 multicultural family children underwent a cooking activity program. Children of multicultural families showed higher participation in cooking activities than other Korean children. Children of multicultural families wanted to be involved in cooking activity programs after school more than other Korean children. These children also showed a higher rate of wanting to cook Korean foods compared to children of general families. Regarding reasons for participating in cooking activities, 'I think I'm glad to be served delicious food' response was the most common. Children of multicultural families showed higher participation in cooking activities than children of general families. Regarding school life changes, children of multicultural families were found to be less picky of foods in general as well as kimchi and vegetables. In conclusion, cooking activity programs for children of multicultural family showed beneficial effects on diet and understanding of Korean culture.
Peer status, friendship, and school adjustment were measured for 326 third and fourth graders (171 boys, 155 girls). School adjustment was assessed by academic performance, and social behaviors were rated by teachers while attitudes toward school were reported by children. Examination of the relative contributions of peer status and friendship to school adjustment revealed both unique and joint explanations. Children's academic performance was mainly explained by peer status; popular children had higher performance than rejected children. Attitudes toward school were more positive for children who reported higher friendship quality. Prosocial behaviors were higher for the popular group and for children with more stable reciprocal friends; aggressive behaviors were higher for the rejected group and competitive children with close friends; withdrawal behaviors were higher for the neglected group and children with few reciprocal friends.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of children's self-esteem on their school adjustment, focusing on the mediation of peer attachment. A total of 2,200 3rd grade children from the third Korea Child-Adolescent Panel Survey participated in this study. The instruments used in this study were the Self-esteem Scale, Peer Attachment Scale, and School Adjustment Scale. The collected data were analyzed by using a Student's t -test, Pearson's partial correlation, simple regression, and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS ver. 16.0 software. The main results of this study are as follows: first, the boys had higher self-esteem, peer attachment, and school adjustment scores than the girls. Second, there was a significant positive correlation between children's self-esteem and peer attachment as well as a significant positive correlation between children's self-esteem and school adjustment. Further, there was a significant positive correlation between children's peer attachment and school adjustment. Finally, children's self-esteem exerted positive effects on their peer attachment, and children's peer attachment had a positive influence on their school adjustment. The effect of children's self-esteem on their school adjustment was partially mediated by their peer attachment. These findings provide preliminary evidence that the relationships between children's self-esteem and school adjustment may be mediated by their peer attachment.
Although Toxoplasma gondii infection in primary school children has been investigated in many countries, limited surveys have been available in primary school children in China. In the present study, we report the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in primary school children in Shandong province, China. Sera from 6,000 primary school children were evaluated for T. gondii antibodies with ELISA. The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was 16.0% (961/6,000), of which 14.5% (870/6,000) were positive for anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies, 3.4% (206/6,000) positive for IgM, and 1.9% (115/6,000) were positive for both IgG and IgM. The results of the present investigation indicated a high seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in primary school children in Shandong province, China. Therefore, effective measures should be taken to prevent and control T. gondii infection in primary school children in this province. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of T. gondii seroprevalence in primary school children in Shandong province, China.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parent's conflict, paternal/ maternal grandmother's psychological support and school-aged children's well-being. The subjects were 227 6th grade school-aged children in elementary school who were 128(56.4%) boys and 99(43.6%) girls. Instruments used in this research were CDI(Children's Depression Inventory), CPIC(The children's perception of interparental conflict scale), and psychological support scale. The data were analyzed by simple regression, standard multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression(using SPSS 12.1). Major findings were as follows: (1) There was no difference in maternal grandmother's psychological support and paternal grandmother's psychological support. (2) Maternal grandmother's psychological support was more important variable affecting school-aged children's well-being than paternal grandmother's psychological support. (3) Paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support operated as a main effect with school-aged children's well-being increasing as paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support increased. There were not interaction effects of parent's conflict and paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support on school-aged children's well-being. That result showed that paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support did not moderate negative effects of parent's conflict on school-aged children's well-being.
The necessity of school health promoting projects is well known to many researchers, however, there is a lack of research on the development of strategies for school health programs and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the programs. The results of our previous study in 1996 identified poor eyesight as one of the several health problems among elementary school children in urban areas. The main objective of this study is to develop, implement, and evaluate vision care for elementary school children. The research method utilized a quasi experimental design using non-equivalent group, pre-post comparison. The sample consisted of all second grade children in two elementary schools in Kyung-giProvince. In order to prevent a contamination effect of the vision care program, one school was selected as a control and the other school was selected as a treatment group. The experimental school had 467 children and the control school had 402 children. The visual acuity of children in both group was measured and a survey questionnaire was sent out to parents on the knowledge, attitude, and behavior related to vision care before the program was implemented. The children of the experimental school received the following programs; separate education on proper nutrition and care of eyesight for children and parents, daily eye exercises using video tape, and an essay and poster contest on healthy eyesight. The eye exercise program lasted from March, 1997 to November, 1997. On November, 1997, visual acuity was measured again from children in both schools. The data was analyzed by using SAS statistical package. The results indicate that the children in the experimental group had significantly (p〈0.001) better eyesight than the children in the control group. Also, some of the behavior highly related to the poor eyesight are poor maternal eyesight and watching TV from a short distance. In conclusion, one of the significance of this project is that the vision care program was developed after the need assessment. It will be encouraged in the future that more school health program should be developed after a need assessment. Also, inclusion of family members was important in health promoting projects within a school setting since healthy behavior needs to be reinforced at horne as well as at school.
