A novel scanning probe measurement system was developed to enable precise profile measurements of microaspheric surfaces. An air-bearing stylus with a microprobe was used to perform the surface profile scanning. The new system worked in a contact mode and had the capability of measuring micro-aspheric surfaces with large tilt angles and complex profiles. Due to limitations resulting from the contact mode, such as possible damage caused by the contact force and lateral resolution restrictions from the curvature of the probe tip, several system improvements were implemented. An air bearing was used to suspend the shaft of the probe to reduce the contact force, enabling fine adjustments of the contact force by changing the air pressure. The movement of the shaft was measured by a linear encoder with a scale attached to the actual shaft to avoid Abbe errors. A $50-{\mu}m-diameter$ glass sphere was bonded to the tip of the probe to improve the lateral resolution of the system. The maximum contact force of the probe was 10 mN. The shaft was capable of holding the probe continuously if the contact force was less than 40 mN, and the resolution of the probe could be as high as 10 nm, The performance of the new scanning probe measurement system was verified by experimental data.

Photonic force microscopy (PFM) is an optical tweezers-based scanning probe microscopy, which measures the forces in the range of fN to pN. The low stiffness leads proper to measure single molecular interaction. We introduce a novel photonic force microscopy to stably map various chemical properties as well as topographic information, utilizing weak molecular bond between probe and object's surface. First, we installed stable optical tweezers instrument, where an IR laser with 1064 nm wavelength was used as trapping source to reduce damage to biological sample. To manipulate trapped material, electric driven two-axis mirrors were used for x, y directional probe scanning and a piezo stage for z directional probe scanning. For resolution test, probe scans with vertical direction repeatedly at the same lateral position, where the vertical resolution is ~25 nm. To obtain the topography of surface which is etched glass, trapped bead scans 3-dimensionally and measures the contact position in each cycle. To acquire the chemical mapping, we design the DNA oligonucleotide pairs combining as a zipping structure, where one is attached at the surface of bead and other is arranged on surface. We measured the rupture force of molecular bonding to investigate chemical properties on the surface with various loading rate. We expect this system can realize a high-resolution multi-functional imaging technique able to acquire topographic map of objects and to distinguish difference of chemical properties between these objects simultaneously.

We developed a new scheme for the highly sensitive near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) by using a dithering sample stage rather than a dithering probe. In the proposed scheme, the sample is directly loaded on one prong surface of a dithering bare tuning fork. Gap control between probe and sample is performed by detecting the shear force between an immobile fiber probe and the dithering sample. In a conventional NSOM, the Q factor drastically decreases from 7783 to 1000 or even to 100 by attaching a probe to the tuning fork. In our proposed NSOM, on the contrary, the Q factor does not change significantly, 7783 to 7480, when the sample is loaded directly to the tuning fork instead of attaching a probe. Consequently, the graphene sheets that cannot be observed by a conventional NSOM were clearly observed by the proposed method with sub-nanometer vertical resolution due to the extremely high Q factor.
Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has become an indispensable tool in efforts to develop the next generation of nanoelectronic devices, given its achievable nanometer spatial resolution and highly versatile ability to measure a variety of properties. Recently a new scanning probe microscope was developed to overcome the tip degradation problem of the classic SPM. The main advantage of this new method, called Reverse tip sample (RTS) SPM, is that a single tip can be replaced by a chip containing hundreds to thousands of tips. Generally for use in RTS SPM, pyramid-shaped diamond tips are made by molding on a silicon substrate. Combining RTS SPM with Scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM) using the diamond tip offers the potential to perform 3D profiling of semiconductor materials. However, damage frequently occurs to the completed tips because of the complex manufacturing process. In this work, we design, fabricate, and evaluate an RTS tip chip prototype to simplify the complex manufacturing process, prevent tip damage, and shorten manufacturing time.

This paper shows a method for design of the nano-positioning planar scanner used in the scanning probe microscope. The planar scanner is composed of flexure guides, piezoelectric actuators and feedback sensors. In the design of flexure guides, the Castigliano's theorem was used to find the stiffness of the guide. The motion amplifying mechanism was used in the piezoelectric actuator to achieve a large travel range. We found theoretically the travel range of the total system and verified using the commercial FEM(finite element method) program. The maximum travel range of the planar scanner is above than 140 $\mu$m. The 3 axis positioning capability was verified by the mode analysis using the FEM program.

In this paper, an OMM (On-the-Machine Measuring) system has been developed, which can perform measuring and inspection of sculptured surfaces of die and mold, by use of a scanning-type touch probe mounted into the spindle of a NC machine. The calibration procedures of a scanning prove (SP2-1, Renishaw) and an algorithm for measuring surface points by a ball-nosed stylus have been studied. The system has been developed based on commercial CAM software (Z-Master 2000), and tested through measuring a plastic injection molding-die. Also some experimental results of the calibration and measuring for given surface positions are analyzed to verify its accuracy and reliability.

Dosimetry of radiating electromagnetic wave from mobile devices to human body has been evaluated by measuring Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). Usual SAR measurement system scans the volume by robot arm to evaluate RF power absorption to human body from wireless devices. It is possible to fast estimate the volume SAR by software deleting robot moving time with the 2D surface SAR data acquired by arrayed probes. This paper shows the principle of fast SAR measurement and the measured data comparison between the fast SAR system and the robot scanning system. Data of the fast SAR is well corresponding with data of robot scanning SAR within ${\pm}3$ dB, and its dynamic range covers from 10 mW/kg to 30 W/kg with 4.8 mm probe diameter.

Most of the electrons emitted from the filament, are captured by the anode. The portion of the electron current that leaves the gun through the hole in the anode is called the beam current. Electron beam probe is called the focused beam on the specimen. Because of the lenes and aperture, the probe current becomes smaller than the beam current. It generate various signals(backscattered electron, secondary electron) in an interaction with the specimen atoms. Backscattered electron provide an useful signal for composition and local specimen surface inclination. Secondary electron is used far the formation of surface imagination. The steady electron beam probe is very important for the imagination formation and the brightness. In this paper, we show the results of developed elements that create electron beam probe and the measured beam probe in various acceleration voltages by Faraday cup. These data are used to analysis and improve the performance of the system in the development.

In this study, a probe array has been developed for use in a data storage device that is based on scanning probe microscope (SPM) and MEMS technology. When recording data bits by poling the PZT thin layer and reading them by sensing its piezoresponse, commercial probes of which the tip heights are typically shorter than $3{\mu}m$ raise a problem due to the electrostatic forces occurring between the probe body and the bottom electrode of a medium. In order to reduce this undesirable effect, a poly-silicon probe with a high aspect-ratio tip was fabricated using a molding technique. Poly-silicon probes fabricated by the molding technique have several features. The tip can be protected during the subsequent fabrication processes and have a high aspect ratio. The tip radius can be as small as 15 nm because sharpening oxidation process is allowed. To drive the probe, electrostatic actuation mechanism was employed since the fabrication process and driving/sensing circuit is very simple. The natural frequency and DC sensitivity of a fabricated probe were measured to be 18.75 kHz and 16.7 nm/V, respectively. The step response characteristic was investigated as well. Overshoot behavior in the probe movement was hardly observed because of large squeeze film air damping forces. Therefore, the probe fabricated in this study is considered to be very useful in probe-based data storages since it can stably approach toward the medium and be more robust against external shock.

The automated scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) has been designed, and built to measure in-plane displacements associated with waves propagating on vibrating structures. Use of optical fibers allows the compact design of a laser probe head which can be scanned over the vibrating structures. An algorithm for automated self-alignment of the laser probe is developed. The system is completely automated for scanning over the structures, focusing two laser beams at each data point until the detected vibration signal is stable, and for recording and transferring the data to a system computer. The automated system allows one to get extensive data of the vibration field over the structures. The system is tested by scanning a piezoelectric cylindrical shell and a plate excited by a continuous signal and by a pulse signal, respectively. Results show that the automated scanning LDV system can be a useful tool to measure the in-plane vibration field and to detect the elastic waves propagating on the vibrating structures.
