A simple and effective analysis method is presented for gaining a complete transient temperatures on the internal and external surfaces of a 40 mm gun tube subjected to a series of rapid firings. Two series of temperature data for both Hs and As were measured by using two rapid response k-type surface thermocouples near the firing origin and the muzzle. With other available temperature data, patterns of temperature variations of the gun tube as a function of time variable were driven through complete evaluations of the data. It is found that overall temperature gradients which increase exponentially toward saturation temperature, actually consist of a series of linear temperature gradients corresponding to the firing sequences. Under the similar firing sequences, patterns of temperature variations fur both the surface temperatures near the chamber and those near the muzzle were found to have linear temperature gradients with different values and the same response frequencies, i.e. they had peaks and lows in temperatures at the same time. The resultant complete temperature data can be used as the fundamental bases for analysis of thermoelastic properties of the materials such as thermal strain and stress, and f3r the prediction of cannon tube life-time through calculation of wear rate.
There is an inherent randomness for concrete microstructure even with the same manufacturing process. Meanwhile, the concrete material under the aqueous environment is usually not fully saturated by water. This study aimed to develop a stochastic micromechanical framework to investigate the probabilistic behavior of the unsaturated concrete from microscale level. The material is represented as a multiphase composite composed of the water, the pores and the intrinsic concrete (made up by the mortar, the coarse aggregates and their interfaces). The differential scheme based two-level micromechanical homogenization scheme is presented to quantitatively predict the concrete's effective properties. By modeling the volume fractions and properties of the constituents as stochastic, we extend the deterministic framework to stochastic to incorporate the material's inherent randomness. Monte Carlo simulations are adopted to reach the different order moments of the effective properties. A distribution-free method is employed to get the unbiased probability density function based on the maximum entropy principle. Numerical examples including limited experimental validations, comparisons with existing micromechanical models, commonly used probability density functions and the direct Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the proposed models provide an accurate and computationally efficient framework in characterizing the material's effective properties. Finally, the effects of the saturation degrees and the pore shapes on the concrete macroscopic probabilistic behaviors are investigated based on our proposed stochastic micromechanical framework.
This study was performed to investigate effects of dietary fat content and degree of saturation on the function of the immune system. Sixty male BALB/c mice average-weighing 17g were divided into three dietary groups: 5% safflower oil group, 20% safflower oil group, 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil group. Food intake and body weight were measured every day. At 4th, 7th, 10th week after dietary treatment, organ weight measurements, delayed-type hypersensitivity test, plaque forming cell test, agglutination test, differential white cell count and histological examination of spleen were performed. Results are follows; 1) Body weight, food intake and calorie intake were not different in the three dietary groups during the experimental period($\alpha$=0.05). 2) Liver weight was significantly higher in 5% safflower oil group($\alpha$=0.05). Spleen index was slightly higher in mice fed 5% safflower oil and 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil. Thymus index in all mice was decreased by aging. 3) Delayed-type hypersensitivity of the mice fed 5% safflower oil and 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil was significantly higher than that of the mice fed 20% safflower oil. 4) The number of plaque forming cell was significantly reduced at 10th week compared to 7th week in all group($\alpha$=0.05). Although there was no difference in plaque forming cell among three groups at 10th week, 5% safflower oil group showed slightly higher plaque forming cell than 20% safflower oil group at 7th week. 5) At 4th week, agglutination test seems to be higher in 5% safflower oil group and 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil group compared to 20% safflower oil group. 6) Percentage of neutrophil and eosinophil was slightly reduced in 20% safflower oil group. 7) Spleen tissue was not affected by and dietary treatments. According to our results, the higher the fat content & unsaturation of the diet the lower the cell-mediated immunity of the mice. Humoral-immunity did not appear to be affected by the dietary manipulation. However humoral-immunity was decreased significantly by aging in all dietary groups.
We report the structure, thermal and magnetic properties of a non-equilibrium $Al_{0.6}(Fe_{50}Cu_{50})_{0.4}$ alloy powder produced by rod milling and chemical leaching. An X-ray diffractometry(XRD), a transmission electron microscope(TEM), a differential scanning calorimeter(DSC), a vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM), and superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID) were utilized to characterize the as-milled and leaching specimens. The crystallite size reached a value of about 8.82 nm. In the DSC experiment, the peak temperatures and crystallization temperatures decreased with increasing milling time. The activation energy of crystallization is 200.5 kJ/mole for as-milled alloy powder. The intensities of the XRD peaks of as-milled powders associated with the bcc type $Al_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}$ structure formative at $350^{\circ}C$ sharply increase with increasing annealing temperature. Above $400^{\circ}C$, peaks alloted to $Al_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}$ and $Al_{5}Fe_{2}$ are observed. After annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1h, the leached Ll specimen transformed into bcc $\alpha$-Fe and fcc Cu phases, accompanied by a change in the structural and magnetic properties. The saturation magnetization decreased with increasing milling time, and a value of about 8.42 emu/g was reached at 500 h of milling. The coercivity reached a maximum value of about 142.7 Oe after 500 h of milling. The magnetization of leached specimens as function of fields were higher at 5 K, and increased more sharply at 5 K than at 100 K.
We fabricated cube-textured Ni and Ni-W alloy substrates for coated conductors and characterized the effects of W addition on microstructure, mechanical strength, and magnetic properties of the substrate. Pure Ni and Ni-(2, 3, 5at.%)W alloys were prepared by plasma arc melting, heavily cold rolled and then annealed at various temperatures of $600-1300^{\circ}C$. The texture was evaluated by pole-figure and orientation distribution function (ODF) analysis. Mechanical properties were investigated by micro Vickers hardness and tension test. Ferromagnetism of the substrate was measured by physical property measurement system (PPMS). It was observed that Ni-W substrates had sharp cube texture, and the full-width at half-maximums (FWHMs) of in-plane texture was $^{\circ}$-5.57$4.42^{\circ}$, which is better than that of pure Ni substrate. In addition cube texture of Ni-W substrates was retained at higher temperature up to $1300^{\circ}C$. Microstructural observation showed that the Ni-W substrates had fine grain size and higher mechanical properties than the pure Ni substrate. These improvements are probably due to strengthening mechanisms such as solid solution hardening and/or grain size strengthening. PPMS analysis showed that addition of W effectively reduced saturation magnetization in applied magnetic field and Curie temperature.
Purpose: To examine effects of application of bronchodilators after endotracheal suction on peak air way pressure (PAP), lung compliance (Cdyn), oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and respiration rate (RR) in cardiac surgery patients. Method: Data were collected from October 2007 to March 2008. Participants were patients who were treated with bronchodilators through mechanical ventilators in the SICU. At each suctioning, bronchodilators were applied immediately, and at 5, 10, and 15 minutes after suctioning. Besides PAP, Cdyn, $SpO_2$, HR, BP, RR, data on the frequency of side effects were also collected at 15, 30, 60 minutes after nebulization. Data were analyzed using the SAS program. Results: For application of bronchodilator right after suctioning and after, 5, 10 and 15 minutes, PAP and Cdyn did not show any significant differences although PAP was persistently decreased for 15 to 30 minutes and Cdyn increased at 15 minutes and decreased gradually after nebulization. Besides $SpO_2$, HR, BP, and RR, frequency of side effects did not show any significant difference. Conclusion: Bronchodilators can be applied at any time. However, the positive effects of bronchodilation right after suctioning on PAP and Cdyn, as also shown in previous reports, indicate it is a more efficient clinical process to maintain an adequate airway.
We explored phagotrophy of the phototrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum on the cyanobacterium Synechococcus. The ingestion and clearance rates of M. rubrum on Synechococcus as a function of prey concentration were measured. In addition, we calculated grazing coefficients by combining the field data on abundance of M. rubrum and co-occurring Synechococcus spp. with laboratory data on ingestion rates. The ingestion rate of M. rubrum on Synechococcus sp. linearly increased with increasing prey concentrations up to approximately 1.9 × 106 cells mL-1, to exhibit sigmoidal saturation at higher concentrations. The maximum ingestion and clearance rates of M. rubrum on Synechococcus were 2.1 cells predator-1 h-1 and 4.2 nL predator-1 h-1, respectively. The calculated grazing coefficients attributable to M. rubrum on cooccurring Synechococcus spp. reached 0.04 day-1. M. rubrum could thus sometimes be an effective protistan grazer of Synechococcus in marine planktonic food webs. M. rubrum might also be able to form recurrent and massive blooms in diverse marine environments supported by the unique and complex mixotrophic arrays including phagotrphy on hetrotrophic bacteria and Synechococcus as well as digestion, kleptoplastidy and karyoklepty after the ingestion of cryptophyte prey.

A chemical reaction occurring in CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor) is significantly affected by the concentration, temperature, pressure, and reacting time of materials, and thus it has strong nonlinear and time-varying characteristics. Also, when an existing linear PID controller with fixed gain is used, the performance could deteriorate or could be unstable if the system parameters change due to the change in the operating point of CSTR. In this study, a technique for the design of a fuzzy PD plus I controller was proposed for the temperature control of a CSTR process. In the fuzzy PD plus I controller, a linear integral controller was added to a fuzzy PD controller in parallel, and the steady-state performance could be improved based on this. For the fuzzy membership function, a Gaussian type was used; for the fuzzy inference, the Max-Min method of Mamdani was used; and for the defuzzification, the center of gravity method was used. In addition, the saturation state of the actuator was also considered during controller design. The validity of the proposed method was examined by comparing the set-point tracking performance and the robustness to the parameter change with those of an adaptive controller and a nonlinear proportional-integral-differential controller.
Use of ketamine and propofol combination (so-called Ketofol) anesthesiain a fixed ratio (1:1 mg/ml) was reported in dogs. The use of ketofol reduced cardiovascular suppression, but respiratory-related side effects was not significantly different from propofol alone. In this study, we evaluated the quality of ketofol anesthesia and changes in cardiopulmonary function according to the ratio of ketamine to propofol. The experimental groups were divided into three groups: propofol alone (P group), 3:7 ketofol group (PK1 group) and 1:1 ketofol group (PK2). For each group, the dose of 0.8 ml/kgwas administered intravenously at a constant rate until the tracheal intubation was possible and anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane for 120 minutes after induction of anesthesia. There was no significant difference in the anesthetic quality among three groups. Also, there was no difference in respiratory rate, tidal volume, end-tidal carbondioxide, and oxygen saturation. In group P, heart rate was not changed significantly during anesthesia, but arterial blood pressure decreased, while heart rate and arterial blood pressure increased significantly in group PK2. In the PK1 group, heart rate and arterial blood pressure during anesthesia remained similar to pre-anesthetic values. In conclusion, ketofol might be used as induction agent, and 3:7 ratioof ketofol showed more safe and effective anesthetic effect in dogs. Additionally, 1:1 ketofol may be used in patients with severe bradycardia orhypotension with close monitoring during anesthesia.
