In Bangladesh, increases in the tropospheric ozone ($O_3$) concentration and in soil salinization may lead to crop damage. To clarify the effects of $O_3$ and/or soil salinity on Bangladeshi wheat cultivars, BAW1059 (salt-tolerant) and Shatabdi (salt-sensitive) were exposed to 70-day treatments with $O_3$ (charcoal-filtered air (CF), $1.0{\times}O_3$, and $1.5{\times}O_3$) and different levels of soil salinity (0, 4, and $8dS\;m^{-1}$). In both cultivars, the whole-plant dry mass and grain yield were significantly reduced by exposure to $O_3$. Increased soil salinity caused significant reductions in whole-plant growth and yield in Shatabdi, but the reductions were negligible in BAW1059. No significant interactions between $O_3$ and salinity were detected for growth, yield, and leaf gas exchange parameters in both cultivars. We concluded that the effects of $O_3$ are not ameliorated by soil salinity in two Bangladeshi wheat cultivars, regardless of their salinity tolerance.

In this study we carried out to evaluate the salinity concentration and volumetric water content of unsaturated soil column using frequency domain Reflectometry with vector network analyzer (FDR-V) measurement system. All of experiments were considered to the effect of temperature which ranges from l0$^{\circ}C$ to 50$^{\circ}C$ increasing the interval of l0$^{\circ}C$ controlled by the constant temperature container. From the results the responses of complex dielectric constant which consist of the real part and imaginary parts have the effect of volumetric water content and concentration of salinity at 1GHz. Use of derived equations (1) and (2) can be calculated the physical parameters such as volumetric water content and salinity concentration of unsaturated media by the responses of complex dielectric constant.
Saemangeum lake is an artificial lake created by reclamation works and an estuary embankment since 2006. The sea water flows into the lake by the operation of two sluice gates, and the freshwater enters into the lake by the upper streams. For the reflection of hydrology and hydrodynamics effects in Saemangeum area, a hydrodynamics model was developed by connecting Hydrological Simulation Program with Fortran (HSPF) and Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC). The HSPF was applied to simulate the freshwater discharge from the upper steam watershed, and the EFDC was performed to compute water flow, water temperature, and salinity based on time series from 2008 to 2009. The calibration and validation are performed to analyze horizontal and vertical gradients. The horizontal trend of model simulation results is reflected in the trend of observed data tolerably. The vertical trend is conducted an analysis of seasonal comparisons because of the limitation of vertically observed data. Water temperature reflects on the seasonal changes. Salinity has an effect on the near river input spots. The impact area of salinity is depending on the sea water distribution by gate operation, mainly.

The fate of chemical pollutants in the aquatic environment is generally considered to be strongly influenced by environmental factors such as pH, salinity and electrostatic charges on the surface of particles ai well as by the characteristic of chemicals. Oxolinic acid was measured by chemical analysis using HPLC to determine the effect of salinity, pH and suspended solids on chemical binding and by bioassay for measuring bioactivity. The higher contentration of suspended solids in the medium, the lower concentration of oxolinic and was detected in measurements from by both HPLC and biosssay analysis. This indicates particle may have a stronger binding or absorption effect on oxolinic acid. Bioassay analysis showed weaker bioacivity at higher salinity and pH 7.0, but this result of bioassay analysis was different from the result of HPLC.
Human-induced soil salinity is becoming a major threat to agriculture across the world. This salinisation occurs in both irrigated and rain-fed agricultural zones with the highest proportions in the arid and semi-arid environments. Livestock can play an important role in the management and rehabilitation of this land. There are a range of plants that grow in saline soils and these have been used as animal feed. In many situations, animal production has been poor as a result of low edible biomass production, low nutritive value, depressed appetite, or a reduction in efficiency of energy use. Feeding systems are proposed that maximise the feeding value of plants growing on saline land and integrate their use with other feed resources available within mixed livestock and crop farming systems. Salt-tolerant pastures, particularly the chenopod shrubs, have moderate digestible energy and high crude protein. For this reason they represent a good supplement for poor quality pastures and crop residues. The use of salt-tolerant pasture systems not only provides feed for livestock but also may act as a bio-drain to lower saline water tables and improve the soil for growth of alternative less salt tolerant plants. In the longer term there are opportunities to identify and select more appropriate plants and animals for saline agriculture.

Stress-inducible proteins may function in part as molecular chaperones, protecting cells from damage due to various stresses and helping to maintain homeostasis. We examined the mRNA expression patterns of a 68-kDa heat shock protein (HSP68) and 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78) in relation to physiological changes in Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas under osmotic stress. Expression of HSP68 and GRP78 mRNA in the gill significantly increased until 48 h in a hypersaline environment (HRE) and 72 h in a hyposaline environment (HOE), and then decreased. Osmolality and the concentrations of $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, and $Ca^{2+}$ in the hemolymph of HRE oysters significantly increased until 72 h (the highest value) and then gradually decreased; in HOE oysters, these values significantly decreased until 72 h (the lowest value), and then increased. These results suggest that osmolality and $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, and $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations were stabilized by HSP68 and GRP78, and indicate that these two stress-induced proteins play an important role in regulating the metabolism and protecting the cells of the Pacific oysters exposed to salinity changes.
Phragmites australis is the dominant and constructive species among plant communities in the wetlands of the downstream of Yellow River, China. Its morphological characters were high variable in different habitats. Studies on Morphological and RAPD variation of 15 P. australis populations from this region showed that soil salinity was the dominant ecological factor that affected the morphological characters of P. australis. The basal diameter, height, leaf length, leaf width, internode length, internode accounts, panicle length were negatively related to salinity. 194 loci were amplified by RAPD, of which 9 loci was highly negative-related to salinity, and showed a tendency to prefer the habitats with fresh water. 4 loci were positively related to the salinity, and showed a tendency to prefer the salinized habitats. Most loci were neutral to salinity. The morphological and genetic characters of BZH were special, and the speciality should not be determined by salinity. The morphological characters were affected by genetic information and environment. The morphological characters should change gradually and continuously along environmental gradient under plasticity, but should changed continuously or not in genetic control. The relevancies among quantitive characters, ecological factors and genetic variation in natural populations still will still be a focus and difficulty of ecological genetics of P. australis in the future.

In case of any coastal ocean near the mouth of huge rivers, low salinity water can be formed due to its large amount of freshwater discharge. For the acoustic analysis on the low salinity environment, some oceanographic data of the East China Sea and the Atlantic Ocean were collected through KODC (Korea Oceanographic Data Center) and NODC (National Oceanographic Data Center) online service. In this paper, the T-S gradient diagram is introduced to show a relation between the gradients of temperature and salinity in view of acoustic surface channel formation. Existence of haline channel, quantitative contribution of gradients of salinity and temperature, effectiveness of the channel formation can be known by the T-S gradient diagram. After applying the collected data into the diagram, tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean show strong haline channel due to its nearly invariant temperature and drastic change of salinity with depth. The averaged transmission loss in the channel is about 5.7 ~ 7.5 dB less than that out of the channel by the results of acoustic propagation model (RAM: Range independent Acoustic Model). On the other hand, the East China Sea and temperate region of the Atlantic ocean have weaker haline channel with less difference of the averaged transmission loss between in and out of the channel as 3.2 ~ 6.0 dB. Although data samples used in this study have limitation to represent the general physical structures of the three ocean regions, the T-S gradient diagram is shown to be useful and acoustic field affected by low salinity environment is investigated in this study.

We examined the possibility of developing an early monitoring system using the shell valve movement activity of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) for early detection of low salinity water in coastal areas. At salinity levels of 30 psu and 20 psu, SVMs were detected $7.32{\pm}3.21times/hr$ and $7.11{\pm}3.90times/hr$, respectively, The patterns and times of SVMs were not significantly different between the two experiment phases. However, at 10 psu and 5 psu, shell valves were observed to be permanently closed in all experiments. Under combined condition (Group 1: temperature $15^{\circ}C$${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed from 20 psu to 30 psu over a 2 - 3 hr period, and then remained closed. In Group 2 (temperature $30^{\circ}C$${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed, which indicated that the physiological condition of the oysters reached a critical point. Thus, it may be possible to utilize SVMs as an early warning signal for low salinity water.
The monthly distribution of zooplankton communities in Han River estuary was investigated at two stations from July 1998 to June 1999. Monthly mean abundance of total zooplankton varied remarkably, with the range from 20 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-3}$ to 19,600 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-3}$. During the study period, dominant species of zooplankton community were dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans, copepods Paracalanus indicus, Paracaanus crassirostris, Acartia hongi, Acartia ohtsukai, and meroplanton cirriped larvae. According to tidal states, relative high abundance occurred at high tide without regard to season. The temporal distribution of abundance implied that the reduced salinity probably limited the zooplankton populations and the fluctuations of salinity were an important factor in the variation of abundance. However, the results of salinity tolerance test shows that the variations in salinity do not directly influence the decrease of abundance. This study shows that the relatively high abundance of zooplankton near high tide seems to be related with the expansion of abundant zooplankton inhabiting Incheon coastal waters through tidal currents.
