  • Extracting key visual information from images containing natural scene is a challenging task and an important step for the visually impaired to recognize information based on tactile graphics. In this study, a novel method is proposed for extracting salient regions based on global contrast enhancement and saliency cuts in order to improve the process of recognizing images for the visually impaired. To accomplish this, an image enhancement technique is applied to natural scene images, and a saliency map is acquired to measure the color contrast of homogeneous regions against other areas of the image. The saliency maps also help automatic salient region extraction, referred to as saliency cuts, and assist in obtaining a binary mask of high quality. Finally, outer boundaries and inner edges are detected in images with natural scene to identify edges that are visually significant. Experimental results indicate that the method we propose in this paper extracts salient objects effectively and achieves remarkable performance compared to conventional methods. Our method offers benefits in extracting salient objects and generating simple but important edges from images containing natural scene and for providing information to the visually impaired.

  • In action games such as shooting games or platform games, dodging enemy objects is crucial since the player character dies or loses energy when it collides with any enemy object. In this paper, we investigates how the difficulty of these games changes according to the existence of salient objects. Since salient objects attract the player's attention, other non-salient objects may be unattended by the player, resulting in failing to dodge them. We experimented on the influence of salient objects on the difficulty of a game, and found out that the subjects who played the game without salient objects performed better than the subjects who played the game with salient objects. This paper investigates a human perceptual issue that could affect the game difficulty and suggest a potential guideline for game design and planning.

  • Recently, various and effective contrast based salient object detection models to focus on a single target have been proposed. However, there is a lack of research on detection of multiple objects, and also it is a more challenging task than single target process. In the multiple target problem, we are confronted by new difficulties caused by distinct difference between properties of objects. The characteristic of existing models depending on the global maximum distribution of data point would become a drawback for detection of multiple objects. In this paper, by analyzing limitations of the existing methods, we have devised three main processes to detect multiple salient objects. In the first stage, regional features are extracted from over-segmented regions. In the second stage, the regional features are categorized into homogeneous cluster using the mean-shift algorithm with the kernel function having various sizes. In the final stage, we compute saliency scores of the categorized regions using only spatial features without the contrast features, and then all scores are integrated for the final salient regions. In the experimental results, the scheme achieved superior detection accuracy for the SED2 and MSRA-ASD benchmarks with both a higher precision and better recall than state-of-the-art approaches. Especially, given multiple objects having different properties, our model significantly outperforms all existing models.

  • Salient pole rotor type single phase SRM(switched reluctance motor) uses the magnetic fluxes of radial and axial direction at the same time. Therefore the output power per unit volumn is very high and shaft length can be shorter than any other types of SRM with same output. Also, It can be manufactured with low cost thanks to simple structure and driving circuit. We already designed and manufactured prototype using the dynamic output equation of general rotating machine but the effect by salient pole structure was not considered. The most optimal design parameters for salient pole rotor type single phase SRM will be selected by comparing and analyzing the results from 3D FEM analysis, experimental values of the torque versus speed characteristics. and the nux linkage of prototype. Results for the former 3D FEM analysis and torque vs. speed characteristics were already obtained. Finally, we will measure the nux linkage of salient pole rotor type single phase SRM.

  • An experiment was conducted to identify salient colours for information coding at electronic video displays. CRT and TFT-LCD were used to evaluate the effect of different types of electronic displays on the salience of colours. Total of 100 Subjects, 50 for each display were asked to select more salient 10 colours among 24 given colours. There was no statistically significant difference in the salience of colours between the two display types. The result showed that the tested colours could be clustered into 5 categories according to their brightness, saturation, and the number of R, G, B elements occupied to reproduce the colours. Three achromatic colours (black, white, grey) and eight chromatic colors (red, yellow, green, blue, cyan, orange, magenta, and indigo) were identified as the salient colours at the electronic video displays. The result also showed that the eight chromatic colours could be clustered into two distinct categories, landmark colours(red, yellow, green, and blue) and the other basic colours (cyan, magenta, orange, and indigo). It is noticeable that cyan, magenta, and indigo substituted for pink, purple, and brown that were recommended as the salient colours for the environment not using electronic video displays by the previous researches.

  • Moving object detection is very important for video surveillance in modern days. In special case, we can categorize motions into two types-salient and non-salient motion. In this paper, we first calculate temporal difference image for extract moving objects and adapt to dynamic environments and next, we also propose a new algorithm to detect salient motion information in complex environment by combining temporal difference image and binary block image which is calculated by motion vector using the newest MPEG-4 and EPZS, and it is very effective to detect objects in a complex environment that many various motions are mixed.

  • In this paper, an adaptive iterative algorithm is proposed for motion deblurring by using the salient intensity prior. Based on the observation that the salient intensity of the clear image is sparse, and the salient intensity of the blurred image is less sparse during the image blurring process. The salient intensity prior is proposed to enforce the sparsity of the distribution of the saliency in the latent image, which guides the blind deblurring in various scenarios. Furthermore, an adaptive iteration strategy is proposed to adjust the number of iterations by evaluating the performance of the latent image and the similarity of the estimated blur kernel. The negative influence of overabundant iterations in each scale is effectively restrained in this way. Experiments on publicly available image deblurring datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves state-of-the-art deblurring results with small computational costs.

  • This paper proposes a novel method to reduce the torque ripple due to the non-ideality of the current sensing parts in vector-controlled inverter-fed PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) drive systems. The motor output torque equations are derived in terms of their offset voltages and different voltage transducing gains. And the effects of phase current errors on motor torque are analyzed for both salient PMSM and non-salient PMSM. The proposed method can eliminate the torque ripple by nulling the offset voltages and setting the voltage transducing gains to the same value. To verify the proposed method, digital simulations are carried out for non-salient PMSM.

  • This study explored the role of Korean immigrant churches as a social context for Korean American youths, with a specific focus on its role in ethnic socialization. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 23 Korean American young adults. The results show that such churches serve as a salient social context for Korean American youths in which day-to-day lives are deeply integrated. Specifically, they serve as a salient context for coethnic peer relationships and family interactions. Moreover, Korean immigrant churches play a salient role as an agent of enculturation for Korean American youths by engaging them in cultural socialization, constructing and transmitting immigrant discourse, and providing a coethnic community. Taken as whole, findings suggest a distinct and salient role of immigrant churches in the lives of Korean American youths and highlight the importance of studying the social context specific to the children of immigrants.
