  • This study suggests a navigation route for maritime tourism cruise sail yacht that sails off from Yeosu, and passes by Baekdo and Geomundo with their live island culture, to Kimnyeonghang of the Jeju islands. Recently, there are increasing number of accidents in proportion to vitalizing marine leisure. That's why it should be examined by region and sea when developing safe sea route considering characteristics of the sailing yacht. Thus, it is needed to introduce marine culture, hold international sailing yacht race and develop multi-functional sea port according to the case of Geomundo. Also additional analysis for navigation ruote patterns and density of the fairway is required. This information will improve safe sailing level of sailing yacht that will help the local tourism industry.

  • Turbulent flows around a sailing yacht hull were calculated using CFD technique. Grid system was generated by using Gridgen package and Fluent package was used to calculate flows around a 30ft-class yacht hull designed by MOERI. The drafts at starboard and port sides of a yacht. when the hull was heeled, were determined by adjusting the same displacement in the generated grid system. Pressure distribution on the sailing yacht hull was obtained and the changes of drag and side force by heel and leeway variation were shown. The flow calculations have been carried out both with and without free surface, and keel and rudder were included for both cases. It was found that the calculated results with free surface gives better agreement with experiments than those without free surface, although there are still a room for the improvement in correct prediction of forces.

  • The demand for sailing yacht is increasing in consonance the improvement of people's live. These yachts can be dually propelled by wind and by diesel engine power. A singing (humming, whistling) phenomenon induced on the propeller was discovered on a 55-foot catamaran sailing yacht. As a result, an increase in the structural vibration of the stern tube room and propulsion system with abnormal noise was detected due to this flow. In this study, the cause of the phenomenon is investigated and its possible countermeasures proposed.

  • This study aims at establishing a technique for sailing yachts model tests with sailing condition. It is very important to estimate a ship's potential speed performance before building a real ship. Several methods are used to estimate a ship's potential speed performance such as using parent ship data, standard vessel chart and model test. Model test is the most precise among these options. In korea. model testing is widely used with general vessels but not with sailing yachts. Because sailing yachts are propelled with heeling and leeway. using the wind. another method is needed to estimate their speed. The new model test. which is different from tests for upright general vessels, is in a great demand. In this paper. we describe a test method for the sailing yacht model test. based on Masuyama's equation of motion. And we describe choosing scale ratio. production process and materials of the model. Also. various ways of measuring instruments. attaching jigs and adjusting calibration are described so that they can be utilized as useful data for model testing.

  • During sailing by wind-driven thrust on the sail, a catamaran sailing yacht generates leeway and heeling. For estimating resistance and moment prediction of a real ship by changing of running attitude, a model test of the ship has to be carried out. This study aims at establishing experimental techniques for a catamaran sailing yacht by changed attitude during running direction. Through the model test, drag and side force of the real ship are predicted. Also through experiment, rolling and yawing moments were considered.

  • Unlike other leisure boats, a sailing yacht is propelled by wind power using sails that are controlled by the crew. Therefore, the ergonomic design of the equipment that the crew has to operate for sailing might be very important. However, it is difficult to find design rules and regulations for the equipment arrangement of a sailing yacht based on ergonomics. In this study, the arrangement design for the height and side plate angle of a winch for a sailing yacht was examined from an ergonomic design point of view. In a simulation, a Korean male in his 20s was selected as a human model for a grinder. The physical load was analyzed when he was operating a winch using a 3D human simulation. The lower back load showed the highest value when using the grinder at $90^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$. Based on the results for the lower back load when using the grinder with various winch heights, it is suggested that the winch height from the cockpit floor to the top of the winch should be more than 40% of the height of the human operator. In addition, according to the results for the lower back load with various horizontal distances from the body, it is suggested that the side plate angle should be less than $16^{\circ}$.

  • A model test was carried out, in order to verify the hydrodynamic performances of public 30 feet class sailing yacht. In the initial design stage, the performances and the running attitude of sail yacht including the hull form and sail plan, appendages were estimated by VPP, from which made the representative test conditions. A new experiment system such as captive model device was composed because the running attitude could be changed by wind conditions. The test results show that the minimum resistance is generated in the heeling 20 degree, which was expected in the initial design stage. It is thought to be the useful informations that the keel has au effects on hydrodynamic forces and resistance differences between the upwind and the downwind condition.

  • The present investigations were carried out for the most and fundamental elements, what is called maneuverability, stability, safety, rig, sail about the world famous race, VOLVO60 and America's cup. The results obtained are summarized as follows: First, the structure of yacht should be designed with focuse on the preparation for the preparation of collision with other yachts around, with the dumps of iceberg and also whales nearby. At the same time, the accurate calculation on the each structure and equipment of yacht should be processed for the dynamic stability in the rainstorms. Second, VOLVO60, long-distance sailing, should be emphasized on the light weight and the safety, while the boat for America's cup, short-distance sailing, should be stressed on the appropriate weight of the body and the maximum speed for fast maneuverability. Third, up-to-the minute materials should be developed for the appropriate wind power and the turning of directions.

  • One of the most important factors in sailing yacht design is an accurate velocity prediction. Velocity prediction programs (VPPs) are widely used to predict velocity of sailing yachts. VPPs, which are primarily based on experimental data and experience of long years, suffer limitations applied in realistic conditions. Thus, in the present study, a high fidelity velocity prediction method using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is proposed. Using the developed method, velocity and motion of a 30 feet sloop yacht, which was developed by Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean (KRISO) and termed KORDY30, were predicted in upwind sailing condition.
