  • The purpose of this study is to develop the diagnostic indices system that can be applied to the evaluation of rural village level, because the indicators developed in many existing studies were mostly consisted of statistical data in higher level than rural villages as well as those were difficult to apply to rural village level empirically. In order to develop the empirical diagnostic indices system, which has 52 indices with 7 categories, this study not only classified the kind of rural village facility and the regional development project of government, but also surveyed the specialist opinion with Delphi method. Especially, this study standardized the all diagnostic indices with positive value to remove the indices with negative values. Finally, the results that the study applied the empirical diagnostic indices to the 15 sample villages of Jinan-gun and Cheongyang-gun showed that there was the applicability of the indices system in the village level.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe a non-face-to-face dementia prevention and physical activity program in small rural villages during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study used a case report provided by a primary healthcare post in Gyeonggi-do in 2020. Results: The program was "From head to toe, stay healthy", which was largely divided into dementia prevention ("Dementia Zero Zone") and physical activity ("The less fat, The healthier body"). Five elderly people aged 75 and over participated for preventing dementia, and 13 residents joined the health promoting programs over 80 times in total. This program was designed one-to-one customized and person-centered program, including counseling, education, and health services. The program participants responded that the amount of physical activities was increased even under strict social distancing and they felt less isolated and less depressed. Moreover, the number of screening for dementia was increased with this program. Conclusion: This case has shown the applicability of a new approach to sustain health promotion programs in the context of limited interaction with rural nurses. Under the challenging environment that requires adaptation to information and communication technologies (ICTs), it will be necessary to solve not only technical problems but also digital literacy issues of rural residents.

  • Contemporary Suburban House is a kind of 'Urban House in nature' that urban middle class peoples elect voluntarily to raise life quality and make their own identity. Therefore, 'The Relationship with Nature' is an essential item in the design of Suburban House. But in the site plan of Suburban House, 'The Nature' as outdoor space is only the rest of the indoor space. The outdoor space is hold in common visually but not actually. 'The Nature' is not a labour ground as the case in rural society but a background of village. The plan of Suburban House is based on the urban apartment plan. So in plan, 'The Nature' is also an object for contemplation as the case in urban house. The outline of the plan as a border line between indoor space and outdoor space is controlled uniformally and 'The Nature' is linked only visually in the direction the resident wants to see.

  • Since the first five-year economic plan starting in 1962, Korea has pursued the policy of economic growth emphasing on the export-oriented industrialization. As a result of export-oriented industrialization, national economy, as a whole, has leveled up. But growth gap between rural and urban area became widened due to declining agricultural sector. Therefore, at this time, development policy for the agriculture should be changed into the broader plan including the welfare of rural residents in order to improve their living conditions. The results of this study are summarized as follows ; 1. The results of survey shows that only 15.5% of rural residents satisfy their rural lives and that 62.8% of residents want to leave their town. Difficulty of educating their children in rural area is found to be major reasons for moving out 2. The results of surveying the demand for rural development by rural residents are figured as follows ; (1) Industrial-economic development - Agricultural development : 38.4% - Rural industrialization development : 23.4% - Farm machinization : 162% (2) Social development for rural residents - Improvement of rural welfare : 33.4% - Expansion rural organization for development : 25.8% - Improvement of educational circumstances : 20.1% (3) Living conditions - Amelioration of community and housing facilities : 55.1% - Disposal facilities for trash : 20.5% As the surveying results show, it can be concluded that rural residential area development project must be enforced to meet demand for the development for rural residents.

By the way, social welfare services is less available and accessible to the rural elderly. And we have very limited information about community -oriented welfare services for the elderly. The lack of social welfare services in rural area resulted from mainly geographic isolation and economic deprivation. So, the present research aimed at; 1) to explore what the social welfare service is benefited from governmental or local assembly. 2) to explore what kind of community services is provided for the rural village and elderly. 3) to appear the political propose for the rural elderly. In South Korea, The Rural Development Administration currently operate 'villages which is supported special programs for the improvement of QOL of rural elderly' in 110 villages. It is a model governmental welfare service for rural area. For the purpose, the survey data is gathered from community level data per village (107 villages), individual survey data(881people) who live in the village and qualitative data. Two kinds of quantitative data is combined to form a data. The statistical methods used for data analysis are descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. • Rural areas dominates the country landscapes in size with less population and rich traditional heritages as well as natural landscapes. Rural community groves (RCG) and Dangsan groves have been established by community residents during a few hundred years, and most of them have been disturbed. Only a few RCGs and Dangsan groves remain for an extensive period with efforts from community residents. These remnant RCGs and Dangsan groves are highly evaluated representing Korean rural cultural landscapes. Sound understanding on the structure of the rural landscapes and their role on the rural community environment is required to provide an appropriate policy for managing rural landscapes. This study aims to understand the characteristics of RCGs and Dangsan groves in the cultural landscapes, to investigate policies and issues of the advanced countries on RCGs and Dangsan groves, and to overview domestic policies for rural landscapes. The study results showed that there is a close relationship between RCGs and main issues discussed in EU countries. Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry of Korea, Ministry of Environment and Rural Development Administration have to focus on the potential of RCGs and Dangsan groves for multi-functions of agricultural and rural areas, natural streams, rural amenity, direct subsidy for landscape preservation and rural tourism. Based on the findings, this study suggests that RCGs and Dangsan groves will provide benefits to develop rural-mountain-sea villages and to enhance country's landscapes as well as local landscapes.

  • Living conditions of the rural elderly were assessed in terms of clothing behavior, health and nutritional status, housing and envioronmental condition, and psychological adjustment. The subjects were eighty individuals over sixty residing in the rural community of Iksan-kun, Chollabukdo. The interview method using questionnaires, direct measurement, and observation was used for this study. Data were compared with those obtained from a previous study of the elderly residing in an urban area. Clothing behavior showed that the elderly residing in the rural community were more concerned about plain and conservative design of clothes than their urban counterparts. Special protective clothes for cropdusting with agricultural chemicals had not been prepared. The following urgent needs were pointed out: development and supply of agricultural chemical protective clothing and development and education of appropriate washing and clothing care methods. The health status of the elderly was generally good, but poor eating habits were found more frequently in the rural elderly than among the urban dwellers. Several dietary nutrient intakes were insufficient. Contrasting the urban elderly with the rural group, it was found that the urban group lacked sufficient vitamin A and vitamin C and the urban women had insufficient calorie whereas the rural group was deficient in protein, vitamin A, calorie, and fat. A significant relationship was found between dietary nutrient intake and health index, food habit points, self recognized health status, meal satisfaction, and economic status. Urgent needs of the development of a nutrition education program for the elderly were pointed out. Most of elderly residing in the surveyed rural communities were living alone or with their spouse only, therefore only one room was used among the three or four available rooms. Most of the rural elderly were living either in a traditional Korean house built with differing floor levels or in a modified Korean style house. Minimal modernization had been made for kitchen facilities such as sink and gas range or for heating facilities with the briquette boiler. However, sanitary space such as lavatory and bathroom had not been remodeled. A housing welfare program for rural communities should be implemented at the national level. The comparison of psychological characteristics of the rural elderly with their city counterparts revealed that the rural elderly have a more stable psychological status and optimistic attitude than those living in a city. However, it was found that most of the elderly did not have any future plan. Community programs for the elderly including hobbies or leisure activities or education programs to generate close interpersonal relationships with their children should be developed and provided.

  • The area to be surveyed is the three-seat of Myeon office in Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do, where population is declining. Satisfaction with the use of local residents of rural central areas providing life services in the back area was identified, focusing on sustainable development and the compact cities. Based on the results of the study, the recommendations are as follows. First, the local spaces to be surveyed need a shift to a walk-centered choice and social structure, not a must-oriented, activity-centric structure. This not only improves the neighborhood of rural areas, but also increases the frequency of pedestrian exchange and helps keep the community afloat. Second, it could enhance the convenience of residents by reviving stocks in existing commercial areas and integrating public services. Finally, it has the effect of taking care of the socially disadvantaged and immigrants in terms of space welfare, and securing jobs through locally customized community businesses.
