The appraisals of hydrology model behavior for flow and water quality are generally performed through comparison of simulated data with observed ones. To perform appraisal of hydrology model, some criteria are often used, such as coefficient of determination ($R^2$), Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE), index of agreement (d), modified forms of NSE and d, and relative efficiency criteria NSE and d. These criteria are used not only for hydrology model estimations also for various comparisons of two data sets; This NSE has been often used for SWAT calibration. However, it has been known that the NSE value has some limitations in evaluating hydrology at watersheds under monsoon climate because this statistic is largely affected by higher values in the data set. To overcome these limitations, the SWAT auto-calibration module was enhanced with K-means clustering and direct runoff/baseflow modules. However the NSE is still being used in this module to evaluate model performance. Therefore, the SWAT Auto-calibration module was modified to incorporate alternative efficiency criteria into the SWAT K-means/direct runoff-baseflow auto-calibration module. It is expected that this enhanced SWAT auto-calibration module will provide better calibration capability of SWAT model for all flow regime.
Infiltration plays an important role in the urban water cycle. Infiltration has a potential to contribute to groundwater recharge in addition to runoff reduction. However, infiltration in urban areas has been considered only as a means of runoff reduction. Conventional design methods for infiltration facilities assume soils to be fully-saturated for the sake of simplicity. The amount of groundwater recharge can not be estimated properly with this scheme. Hence, the characteristics of the unsaturated soil condition need to be considered. The finite element model using SEEP/W to estimate infiltration under the unsaturated condition is presented. Infiltration tests for Joomonjin sand are performed and the infiltration behavior of Joomoonjin sand under the unsaturated condition is measured experimentally to verify the validity of the finite element model. The results from comparing infiltrated volume between the saturated and the unsaturated conditions under the same soil and rainfall conditions show that the infiltrated volume in the unsaturated condition is two times bigger than that in the saturated condition.
An extension of TOPMODEL was developed for rainfall-runoff simulation in agricultural watersheds equipped with tile drains. Tile drain functions are incorporated into the framework of TOPMODEL. Nine possible flow generation scenarios are suggested for tile drained watershed and applied in the modeling procedure. In the model development process, the traditional physically based storage approach and a new approach using a transfer function for the simulation of the flow in the unsaturated zone were compared. In order to provide better insight into the simulation process, a regionalized sensitivity analysis was performed to test the performance of the model and to compare the behavior of the transfer function to that of the simple storage related formulation. The results of analysis show good performance of the transfer function approach. Since the rainfall-runoff response pattern tends to vary seasonally, seven events distributed throughout a year were used in the sensitivity analysis to investigate the seasonal variation of the hydrologic characteristics. It is found that the sensitivity of each parameter described by the model are varied seasonally.
A rainwater utilization facility consists of its catchment area, treatment facility, storage tank, supply facility and pipes in general. The rainwater storage tank which occupies the largest area of the facility has been usually considered quantitatively for determining the storage capacity. Hence, there is little information on water quality improvement by sedimentation in a rainwater storage tank in operation. In this study, we measured the rainwater quality in a rainwater storage tank in operation during late spring and summer, and showed water quality improvement of turbidity removal of 25~46% by sedimentation in a rainwater storage tank under a fixed water level without inflow and outflow after runoff ceased. It is necessary to have a considerable distance between the inlet and outlet of the tank and, if possible, it is recommended that the design should allow for an effective water depth of over 3 m and supply rainwater near the water surface. The operation method which increases the retention time by stopping rainwater supply for insuring low turbidity is recommended when the turbidity of rainwater runoff is high. And also more efficient operation and maintenance of the rainwater utilization facility is expected through the tailored design and operation of the facility considering particle removal and behavior.
Water quality contamination issues are of critical concern to human health, whilst pesticide release generated from irrigated land should be considered for protecting natural habitats and human health. This paper suggests new method for evaluation and analysis using the GIS technique based on integrated spatial modeling framework. The pesticide use on irrigated land is a subset of the larger spectrum of industrial chemicals used in modern society. The behavior of a pesticide is affected by the natural affinity of the chemical for one of four environmental compartments; solid matter, liquid, gaseous form, and biota. However, the major movements are a physical transport over the ground surface by rainfall-runoff and irrigation-runoff. The irrigated water carries out with the transporting sediments and makes contaminated water by pesticide. This paper focuses on risk impact identification and assessment using GIS technique. Also, generated data on pesticide residues on farmland and surface water through GIS simulation will be reflected to environmental research programs. Finally, this study indicates that GIS application is a beneficial tool for spatial pesticide impact analysis as well as environmental risk assessment.
The objective of this study is to develop real-time river flow forecast model by linking continuous rainfall-runoff model with ensemble Kalman filter technique. Andong dam basin is selected as study area and the model performance is evaluated for two periods, 2006. 7.1~8.18 and 2007. 8.1~9.30. The model state variables for data assimilation are defined as soil water content, basin storage and channel storage. This model is designed so as to be updated the state variables using measured inflow data at Andong dam. The analysing result from the behavior of the state variables, predicted state variable as simulated discharge is updated 74% toward measured one. Under the condition of assuming that the forecasted rainfall is equal to the measured one, the model accuracy with and without data assimilation is analyzed. The model performance of the former is better than that of the latter as much as 49.6% and 33.1% for 1 h-lead time during the evaluation period, 2006 and 2007. The real-time river flow forecast model using rainfall-runoff model linking with data assimilation process can show better forecasting result than the existing methods using rainfall-runoff model only in view of the results so far achieved.
A rainfall-runoff model should be calibrated so that the model simulates the hydrological behavior of the basin as accurately as possible. In this study, to calibrate the five parameters of the SSARR model, a multi-objective function and the genetic algorithm were used. The solution of the multi-objective function will not, in general, be a single unique set of parameters but will consist of the so-called Pareto solution according to various trade-offs between the different objectives. The calibration strategy using multi-objective function could decrease calibrating time and effort. From the Pareto solution, a single solution could be selected to simulate a specific flow condition.
Hydrologic data serve as an input to the water resources system. An adequate analysis of hydrologic data is one of the most important steps in the planning of the water resources development program. The natural hydrologic processes, which produce the hydrologic data, are truely 'stochastic' in the sense that natural hydrologic phenomena change with time in accordance with the law of probability as well as with sequential relationship between their occurrences. Therefore, the stochastic approach to the analysis of hydrologic data has become more popular in recent years than the conventional deterministic or probabilistic approach. This paper reviews the mathematical models which can adequately simulate the stochastic behavior of the hydrologic characteristics of a hydrologic system. The actual application of these models in the analysis of hydrologic records(precipipitation and runoff records in particular) is also presented.
Every nuclear power plant measured concentrations of tritium in groundwater and surface water around the plants periodically. It was not easy to predict the tritium concentration only with these measurement data in case of various release scenarios. KAERI developed a new approach to find the relationship between the tritium release rate and tritium concentration in the environment. The approach was based upon a dynamic compartment model. In this paper the dynamic compartment model was modified to predict the tritium behavior more accurately. The mechanisms considered for the transfer of tritium between the compartments were evaporation, groundwater flow, infiltration, runoff, and hydrodynamic dispersion. Time dependent source terms of the compartment model were introduced to refine the release scenarios. Also, transfer coefficients between the compartments were obtained using realistic geographical data. In order to illustrate the model various release scenarios were developed, and the change of tritium concentration in groundwater and surface water around the nuclear power plants was estimated.
To investigate the influence of water area calmness on the red tide development, runoff phenomena due to antecedent precipitation of red tide development day were analyzed. There were examined the water quality variation properties at about the same time of the red tide develop. The red tide was developed when the stage and discharge nearly had not changed. It was estimated that the stability of particle behavior in the mouth of river effected on the red tide develop. Also, the concentrations of $COD_{Mn}$ were increased about 241~629% when the red tide developed.
