In this study, the effective method to esterify the free fatty acids in jatropha oil was examined. Compared to other plant oils, the acid value of jatropha oil was remarkably high, 11.5 mgKOH/g. So direct transesterification by a base catalyst was not suitable for the oil. After the free fatty acids were esterified with methanol, jatropha oil was transesterified. The activities of four solid acid catalysts were tested and Amberlyst-15 showed the best activity for the esterification. After constructing the experiment matrix based on RSM and analyzing the statistical data, the optimal esterification conditions were determined to be 6.79% of methanol and 17.14% of Amberlyst-15. After the pretreatment, jatropha biodiesel was produced by the transesterification using KOH in a pressurized batch reactor. Jatropha biodiesel produced could meet the major specifications of Korean biodiesel standards; 97.35% of FAME, 8.17 h of oxidation stability, 0.125% of total glycerol and $0^{\circ}C$ of CFPP.

When the surfactant is dissolved in an aqueous solution, it forms aggregate called micelles (<20 nm) in the solution, and micelles can form the solubilized formulation by supporting the active ingredient therein. Swollen micelles are formulations capable of carrying larger amounts of active ingredient than conventional solubilized formulations at 50~100 nm. Unlike liposomes or nanoemulsions, which require a separate process such as high pressure emulsification, Swollen micelle is a more efficient method of solubilization and particle formation from a productive point of view. In this study, stabilization experiments on swollen micelle formulations were carried out using poloxamer 407, and then optimized formulation experiments for tocopheryl acetate components were performed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Tocopheryl acetate, a surfactant that affects solubilization and an active substance, were set as a factor and the correlation between them was confirmed. As the evaluation method, stability and particle size distribution and size were confirmed by temperature and time, and the structure and shape of the swollen micelle carrying the active ingredient were confirmed by FIB. These results show that poloxamer 407 0.500%, octyldodeceth-16 0.387% and tocopheryl acetate 0.945% are the most optimized prescriptions for swollen micelle stabilized with tocopheryl acetate.
In this study, an antioxidant was extracted from dandelion leaves using traditional hot water and ultrasonic extraction methods. In order to optimize the extraction yield and total flavonoid, an antioxidant, Box-Behnken design (BBD) model among response surface analysis methods was used. In the case of hot water extraction, the extraction temperature and time as well as the ratio of alcohol/ultrapure water were set as variables, and for the ultrasonic extraction, the ultrasonic survey century and irradiation time and the ratio of alcohol/ultrapure water were variables. Optimum extraction conditions in the hot water extraction method were the extraction temperature and time of $45.76^{\circ}C$ and 1.75 h and the ratio of alcohol/ultrapure water of 41.92 vol.%. While for the ultrasonic extraction method the survey century of 512.63 W, the ratio of alcohol/ultrapure water of 56.97 vol.% and the extraction time of 20.79 min were optimum conditions. Expected reaction yield and flavonoid content values under the optimized condition were calculated as 22.09 wt.% and 28.98 mg QE/mL dw, respectively. In addition, the error value of less than 3% was obtained validating our optimization process.
Fatigue reliability problems are nowadays actively considered in the design of mechanical components. Recently, Dimension Reduction Method using Kriging approximation (KDRM) was proposed by the authors to efficiently calculate statistical moments of the response function. This method, which is more tractable for its sensitivity-free nature and providing the response PDF in a few number of analyses, is adopted in this study for the reliability analysis. Before applying this method to the practical fatigue problems, accuracies are studied in terms of parameters of the KDRM through a number of numerical examples, from which best set of parameters are suggested. In the fatigue reliability problems, good number of experimental data are necessary to get the statistical distribution of the S-N parameters. The information, however, are not always available due to the limited expense and time. In this case, a family of curves with prediction interval, called P-S-N curve, is constructed from regression analysis. Using the KDRM, once a set of responses are available at the sample points at the mean, all the reliability analyses for each P-S-N curve can be efficiently studied without additional response evaluations. The method is applied to a spring design problem as an illustration of practical applications, in which reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is conducted by employing stochastic response surface method which includes probabilistic constraints in itself. Resulting information is of great practical value and will be very helpful for making trade-off decision during the fatigue design.
Optimum conditions for the freeze-thaw stability (FTS) of mung bean starch (MBS) paste as a main ingredient in omija-eui were investigated. For the optimization of the paste preparation condition, the FTS of MBS prepared by boiling in a shaking water bath (BMSW) or by pressure-cooking in an autoclave (PCMA) were analyzed using a response surface methodology (RSM). In addition, the effects of various additives such as gums, sugars, and emulsifier were evaluated on the FTS of MBS paste prepared under optimal conditions. The predicted maximal FTS of MBS paste prepared by the PCMA method (73%) was higher than that of the paste prepared by the BMSW method (36%). In case of additives, gellan gum and sodium alginate effectively prevented the syneresis of MBS paste in the BMSW method and in the PCMA method, respectively. The use of a fructose fatty acid ester as an emulsifier decreased syneresis in a dose-dependent, while the addition of sugars accelerated syneresis. Consequently, MBS paste for omija-eui preparation may be efficiently prepared by adding sodium alginate and fructose fatty acid ester under the optimal conditions of 4.3% MBS content, $121^{\circ}C$ heating temperature, and $89^{\circ}C$ cooling temperature by pressure-cooking in an autoclave.
While job stress evaluations are reported in the recent surveys upon the nuclear power plants(NPPs), any significant advance in the types of questionnaires is not currently found. There are limitations to their usefulness as analytic tools for the management of safety resources in NPPs. Data mining(DM) has emerged as one of the key features for data computing and analysis to conduct a survey analysis. There are still limitations to its capability such as dimensionality associated with many survey questions and quality of information. Even though some survey methods may have significant advantages, often these methods do not provide enough evidence of causal relationships and the statistical inferences among a large number of input factors and responses. In order to address these limitations on the data computing and analysis capabilities, we propose an advanced procedure of survey analysis incorporating the DM method into a statistical analysis. The DM method can reduce dimensionality of risk factors, but DM method may not discuss the robustness of solutions, either by considering data preprocesses for outliers and missing values, or by considering uncontrollable noise factors. We propose three steps to address these limitations. The first step shows data mining with response surface method(RSM), to deal with specific situations by creating a new method called response surface data mining(RSDM). The second step follows the RSDM with detailed statistical relationships between the risk factors and the response of interest, and shows the demonstration the proposed RSDM can effectively find significant physical, psycho-social, and environmental risk factors by reducing the dimensionality with the process providing detailed statistical inferences. The final step suggest a robust stress management system which effectively manage job stress of the workers in NPPs as a part of a safety resource management using the surrogate variable concept.

This paper shows the robust design results of an actuator, a kind of dynamic system. Variations in the components comprising the actuator cause uncertainties in the system's dynamic performance. Therefore, a probabilistic design method is applied to ensure robust actuator performance to component variation. A Simulink model for the actuator was built using transfer functions for the components. The dynamic responses of the actuator were evaluated using the Simulink model. Performance indexes were approximated as quadratic functions of the design parameters through the application of the response surface methodology (RSM) with the Simulink model. Then, a probabilistic design method was applied to the approximated performance indexes to obtain optimal design parameters that would provide robust actuator performance. The optimal design was compared to the present design in terms of the performance indexes and dynamic response characteristics over time.

In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller and diffuser blades in the centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was evaluated. A numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various values of impeller and diffuser parameters, which consist of leading edge (LE) angle, trailing edge (TE) angle, and blade thickness. Each of the parameters was divided into three levels. A total of 45 design points were planned using central composite design (CCD), which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces that were generated on the basis of the results of DOE were used to determine the optimal shape of impeller and diffuser blade. The entire process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Through the optimization, isentropic efficiency and pressure recovery coefficient, which are the main performance parameters of the centrifugal compressor, were increased by 0.3 and 5, respectively.

We examined sensory characteristics to obtain the optimal conditions for doenjang preparation, using response surface methodology (RSM) to evaluate addition of sage (Salvia officinalis L.) powder to, and the salinity of, doenjang. We aimed to develop a new variety of doenjang linking traditional Korean doenjang preparation with the physiological functionalities of sage. Color values were 1.20-2.70, flavor values 1.60-3.20, taste values 1.40-3.50, texture scores 1.60-3.50, and overall preference values 1.60-3.05, with the differences depending on experimental variations in preparation. Analysis of a reaction surface formed by a quadratic regression equation found that the R-squared values for overall preference, texture, taste, flavor, and color were 0.11-0.41, thus relatively low and insignificant, being less than 5%. In sensory tests, the color value was 2.91 when the salinity was 21.50%, and sage powder was added to a concentration of 3.10% (all w/w). The flavor score was 3.21 when the salinity was 22.52% and sage powder concentration was 3.68%. The taste value was 2.87 when the salinity was 8.62% and sage powder concentration was 4.46%. The texture score was 2.88 when the salinity was 8.00% and sage powder concentration was 6.06%. The overall preference score was 2.74 when the salinity was 20.40% and sage powder concentration was 2.66%. Although this preparation method is new to Koreans, doenjang with added sage was associated with higher sensory scores than traditional doenjang, confirming the possibility of development of a novel functional doenjang.
