  • In this paper, a numerical analysis was conducted on the effect of the flow control valve of a oscillation water column(OWC) type wave power generator turbine. The OWC wave power turbine operates with compressed air in the air chamber according to the change of wave height. When the wave height changes rapidly, a flow control valve is required due to overload of the turbine and reduced efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, a flow control valve with an opening angle of 60 degrees was installed in the front of the turbine, and the pressure drop, torque, and overall performance were calculated according to the change of turbine RPM and flow rate of turbine inlet. In conclusion, the flow control valve with an opening angle of 60 degrees affects when the turbine rotates at low rotation and the inlet flow rate is large. But it does not have a significant effect on overall turbine performance and it is necessary to find the optimal angle in the future works.

  • Background: Red ginseng polysaccharides (RGPs) have been acknowledged for their outstanding immunomodulation and anti-tumor activities. However, their studies are still limited by the complexity of their structural features, the absence of purification and enrichment methods, and the rarity of the analytical instruments that apply to the analysis of such macromolecules. Thus, this study is an attempt to establish a new mass spectrometry (MS)-based analysis procedure for RGPs. Methods: Saponin pre-excluded powder of RG (RG-SPEP, 10 mg) was treated with 200 µL of distilled water and centrifuged for 5 h at 1000 rpm and 85 ℃. Ethanol-based precipitation and centrifugation were applied to obtain RGPs from the heated extracts. Further, endo-carbohydrase treatments were performed to produce specific saccharide fragments. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) processes were implemented to purify and enrich the enzyme-treated RGPs, while matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF/TOF) MS was employed for the partial structural analysis of the obtained RGPs. Results: Utilizing cellulase, porous graphitized carbon (PGC), hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC), and MALDI-TOF/TOF MS, the neutral and acidic RGPs were qualitatively analyzed. Hexn and Hexn-18 (cellulose analogs) were determined to be novel neutral RGPs. Additionally, the [Unknown + Hexn] species were also determined as new acidic RGPs. Furthermore, HexAn (H) was determined as another form of the acidic RGPs. Conclusion: Compared to the previous methods of analysis, these unprecedented applications of HILIC-SPE and MALDI-TOF/TOF MS to analyze RGPs proved to be fairly effective for fractionating and detecting neutral and acidic components. This new procedure exhibits great potential as a specific tool for searching and determining various polysaccharides in many herbal medicines.

  • Propeller performance measurement system for commercial propeller was designed and applied to the wind tunnel test for 3 commercial propeller models with diameters of 30 inch. The thrust and torque of the propeller was directly measured by using 6-components balance installed on the rotating axis. The measurement system was validated by using wind tunnel balance calibration equipment. Propeller test stand including measurement and rotating system was validated by using QTP propeller. In the hovering condition, we compared the performance test results and the specifications of the commercial propeller provided by the manufacturer and confirmed that there are differences in the thrust and the torque. We measured the propeller performance with various wind speeds, propeller models and angles of attack and was summarized by thrust coefficients. We confirmed that the trend of the thrust coefficients was different in the low angle of attack and high angle of attack. An aerodynamics database that can be used for future aerodynamic design of an unmanned aerial vehicle was secured.

  • Various conditions of acetic acid fermentation by Acetobacter aceti B20 strain were investigated and evaluated to optimize the fermentative production of acetic acid. The effects of the initial ethanol concentration on growth and acid productivity in a flask and fermentor were also studied. The growth of A. aceti B20 strain was inhibited as the concentration of ethanol increased. However, the highest total acidity and fermentation yield were 5.34% and 56.1%, respectively when the initial concentration of ethanol was 7% in the batch fermentation. Although the concentration of initial glucose influenced the growth rate of B20 strain, it did not influence the total acidity in the flask culture. When the agitation speed increased, the growth, total acidity and fermentation yield were all improved. In fed-batch fermentation, total acidities and fermentation yields were 7.14-8.76% and 39.1-53.0%, respectively, and their values mostly depended on the feeding methods.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a linear Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control algorithm for the ascending and descending system of a rice transplanter and to analyze its response characteristics. Methods: A hydraulic model using a single-acting actuator, proportional valve and a PID control algorithm were developed for the ascending and descending system. The PID coefficients are tuned using the Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) method and the characteristics of unit step response are analyzed to select the PID coefficients at various pump speeds. Results: Results showed that the performance of the PID controller was superior in any condition. It was found that the highest settling time and maximum overshoot were less than 0.210 s and 5%, respectively at all pump speed. It was determined that the steady state errors were 0% in all the cases. The lowest overshoot and settling time were calculated to be nearly 2.56% and 0.205 s, respectively at the pump rated speed (2650 rpm). Conclusions: The results indicated that the developed PID control algorithm would be feasible for the ascending and descending system of a rice transplanter. Finally, it would be helpful to plant the seedlings uniformly and improve the performance of the rice transplanter.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to develop a small combine for harvesting miscellaneous cereal crops. Methods: A prototype small combine was designed and constructed. Its specifications and basic performance were investigated. Results: The prototype small combine for harvesting miscellaneous cereal crops was designed and constructed to reflect similar specifications as those of the conventional combine. The prototype small combine comprises a diesel engine with the rated power/speed of 22.0 kW/2,600 rpm, three-stage primary and two-stage speed range transmission shifts, and a double acting threshing part. The maximum travel speeds of the prototype combine are approximately 0.72 m/s, 2.50 m/s, 0.30 m/s at the low, high speed range shifts in the forward direction, and while traversing in the reverse direction, respectively. The minimum radius of turning was approximately 1.50 m. In a static lateral overturning test, the prototype combine overturned neither to the right nor to left on a $30^{\circ}$ slope. The results of an oilseed rape harvesting test included the maximum operating speed of 0.32 m/s, the grain loss ratio of approximately 9.0%, and the effective field capacity of approximately 10.3 a/h. Additionally, among the outputs in grain outlet, the whole grains, damage grains, and materials other than grain (MOG) ratios accounted for 97.4%, 0.0%, and 2.6%, respectively. Conclusions: The prototype small combine for harvesting miscellaneous cereal crops indicates good driving ability and stability. The results of the oilseed rape harvesting test reveal that the harvesting performance must be enhanced such that the separating and cleaning parts are more suitable for each type of crop, thus reducing grain loss and foreign substances among the outputs in grain outlet. An improved small prototype combine could be used effectively to mechanize the harvesting of miscellaneous cereal crops in small family farms or semi-mountainous areas.

  • In this study, biodegradation efficiency improvement of mixed sludge for the anaerobic digestion process in wastewater treatment plant was investigated. In order to release the organic material contained in the sludge cell and promote the hydrolysis step, mixed sludge of 7% TS (Total Solids) was physically shear-treated at a shear strength of 1,000 ~ 4,000 rpm and a maximum of 120 mins. As a result of the comparison between mixed sludge before and after the treatment, the concentration of $SCOD_{Cr}$(Soluble Chemical Oxygen Demand-chromium method) was increased through the conversion of granular organic matter into dissolved organic matter as shear strength and treatment time increases. The solubilization efficiency increased rapidly after 30 min of solubilization application time, and they were 11.23 %, 20.10 %, 22.52 % and 25.43% at 120 min for each shear strength conditions, respectively. Additionally, the BMP(Biochemical Methane Potential) test was conducted with the optimized samples to determine the increase of methane production by the shear pre-treatment. Consequently, methane production of each samples were 0.275, 0.310, 0.323 and $0.335m^3/kg\;VS_{add}$, which indicates that methane production was increased to a maximum of 21.28% compared to the control without the solubilization process ($0.262m^3/kg\;VS_{add}$). As a result, the physical shear-treatment is a promising process for sewage sludge pre-treatment to reduce the organic waste and increase the energy production.

  • The Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been widely used in granular material researches. Especially, if material has a large deformation, such as ground, it can be a useful method to analyze. In this study, to simulate ground formations, DEM was used. The main purpose of DEM analysis was to investigate the numerical model which can predict the TBM performance by simulating excavating procedure. The selected EPB TBM has a 7.73 m of diameter and six spokes. And two pre-defined excavation conditions with the different rotation speeds per minute (RPM) of the cutterhead was applied. In the modeled cutterhead, the open ratio of cutterhead was 21.31% and number of cutters (including disc cutter and cutter bit) was 219. From the results, reaction forces and resistant torques at the cutterhead face and cutting tools, were measured and compared. Additionally the muck discharge rate and accumulated muck discharge by the screw auger were evaluated.

  • This paper is about the analysis on the vibration characteristic of tooling units on the precision bed in high-speed automatic lathe for precision machining. An automatic lathe operating at about 25,000 RPM is a critical factor in the self-weight stress and deformation of the bed. Especially, the resonance frequency should be grasped in advance to prevent abnormal vibration that may occur during processing. If the wrong bed is used, the resonant frequency can have a fatal influence on the precision machining and increase the defective rate of precision machined parts such as semiconductor parts. In this paper, vibration characteristics were evaluated through static load and resonance frequency analysis of automatic lathe bed. As a result, the maximum stress was 0.14MPa, the maximum deformation amount was $17.9{\mu}m$, and the natural frequency was 364.72Hz. The resonance frequency was calculated as 718Hz, and the stability was confirmed by being in the range of 400Hz or more, which is the processing condition.
