At present there are many theories as to how various lubricants used in forging perform the role of reducing friction. Little work has been carried out to determine the validity of these theories for solid lubricants. This paper covers the development and preliminary results of the experiments devised to illustrate the movement of graphite at the workpiece/tool interface in the work forging temperature range. The paper describes the results obtained from upsetting of rings between two flat dies for measurement of lubricant thickness and compaction of graphite for density-pressure relationship. These allowed the lubricant to be exposed to forging conditions and by applying the principles of Male's ring test the simple generation of a value fur friction factor could also be determined. The experiments have been undertaken to examine the behavior of lubricant for shot blasted surface and change of surface roughness. A simple computer model of the interface has been constructed characterizing the graphite layer in an attempt to simulate the boundary mechanics.
Failure mechanism which can affect geotechnical infrastructures (shallow foundations, retaining walls, and piles) constitutes one of the most encountered problems during the design process. In this respect, the shear behavior of interfaces between grained soils and solid building materials, as well as those between cohesive soils should be investigated. Therefore, a range of ring shear tests with different cohesive soils and stainless-steel interfaces have been carried out through the Bromhead apparatus that allows simulating large displacements along a failure surface. The effects of steel rings roughness and soil type on the residual friction coefficient and the shear zone features (structure, thickness, and texture orientation angle) have been investigated using the Scanning Electron Microscopy. The obtained results indicate that the residual friction coefficient and the structural characteristics of the shear zone vary according to the surface roughness and the soil type. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that the particles inside the shear zone tend to be re-oriented. Also, the shear failure mechanism can be identified along with the interface, within the soil, or simultaneously at the interface and within the soil specimen.

The BST (Ba$_{1-x}$ Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$)(50/50) thin film has been grown by RF magnetron reactive sputtering and its characteristics such as crystallization, surface roughness, and electrical properties have been investigated with varying the film thickness. The crystallization and surface roughness of BST thin film are investigated by using XRD and AFM, respectively The BST thin film anealed at 800.deg. C for 2 min has pure perovskite structure and good surface roughness of 16.1.angs.. We estimate that the thickness and dielectric constant of interface layer between BST film and electrode are 3nm and 18.9, respectively, by measuring the capacitance with various film thickness. As the film thickness increases form 80nm to 240nm, the dielectric constant at 10kHz increases from 199 to 265 and the leakage current density at 200kV/cm decreases from 0.682.mu.A/cm$^{2}$ to 0.181 .mu.A/cm$^{2}$. In the case of 240nm-thick BST thin film, the charge storage density and leakage current density at 5V are 50.5fC/.mu.m$^{2}$ and 0.182.mu.A/cm$^{2}$, respectively. The values indicate that the BST thin film is a very useful dielectric material for the DRAM capacitor.or.

In this paper, We studied the properties of a cable insulate capacity between surfaces with the variation of the interfacial breakdown. Because the fault was mainly occurred in this interface. The insulate trouble of a power cable is out of the interfacial parts, which breakdown the insulate breakdown capacity in a power cable. As a function of silicon oil and interfacial roughness were investigated. In this study, the analysis of electric field and the phenomenon of interfacial breakdown were improved by increased interfacial of oil, decreased surface roughness.

In this paper, the effect of adhesion properties of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber on electrical properties was investigated. The modifications produced on the silicone surface by oxygen plasma were accessed using ATR-FTIR, contact angle and Surface Roughness Tester. Adhesion was obtained from T-peel tests of semiconductive layer haying different treatment durations. In addition, ac breakdown test was carried out for elucidating the change of electrical property with duration of plasma treatment. From the results, the treatment in the oxygen plasma produced a noticeable increase in surface energy, which can be mainly ascribed to the creation of O-H and C=O. It is observed that adhesion performance was determined by surface energy and roughness level of silicone surface. It is found that at dielectric strength was increased with improving the adhesion between the semiconductive and insulating interface.

The surface modification of a mild and stainless steel by alumina sprayed coating were studied. The effects of surface roughness and bond coating layer on the adhesive strengthy and durability of sprayed specimens were also investiated. The adhesive strength of ceramic coating was affected by surface roughness and bond coating layer thinkness. That showed excellent undergrit blast time and bond coating layer; 60 sec and 0.15-0.33mm, respectively. The adhesive strength and densification of sprayed coating with air pressure were superior to those of without and fracture was mainly occured at alumina-bond coating interface. Under ambient atmosphere at $800^{\circ}C$, the oxides existed within bond coating layer promote diffusion of oxygen to lower durability of sprayed specimens. In this case, fracure was occured at sudstrate-bond coating interface.

The purpose of this paper is to develope an understanding of fundamental mechanism of shear behaviour between granite and concrete interfaces. The interface of pile socketed in rock can be modeled in laboratory tests by resolving the axisymmetric pile situation into the two dimensional situation under CNS(constant normal stiffness) direct shear condition. In this paper, the granite core samples were used to simulate the interface condition of piles socketed In granite. The samples were prepared in the laboratory to simulate field condition, roughness(angle, height), stress boundary condition, and then tested by CNS direct shear tests. This paper gives some points about shearing behaviour of socket piles into domestic granite through the analysis of CNS tests results.

The aim of this paper was to investigating the effects of soil relative density, construction materials roughness, oil type (gasoil, crude oil, and used motor oil), and oil content on the internal and interface shear behavior of sand with different construction materials by means of a modified large direct shear test apparatus. Tests conducted on the soil-soil (S-S), soil-rough concrete (S-RC), soil-smooth concrete (S-SC), and soil-steel (S-ST) interfaces and results showed that the shear strength of S-S interface is always higher than the soil-material interfaces. Internal and interface friction angles of sand beds increased by increase in relative density and decreased by increasing oil content. The oil properties (especially viscosity) played a major role in interface friction behavior. Despite the friction angles of contaminated sands with viscous fluids drastically decreased, it compensated by the apparent cohesion and adhesion developed between the soil grains and construction materials.
Multilayer mirrors have widely been used for monochromatization of X-ray with high reflection efficiency. The reflected X-ray energy or wavelength is determined by the d-spacing of a multilayer mirror and the incidence angle. The reflectivity critically depends on the number of bilayers and surface roughness on each interface. The multilayer mirror has a structure of alternative deposition of high and low Z-elements on the substrate. Each interface should be considered in the calculation of reflectivity. In this paper, we examine the degradation of reflectivity by the inter-diffusion combined with surface roughness on each interface for a W/Si multilayer mirror. In the depth-graded W/Si multilayer mirror, the FWHMs for angle and energy were larger than them of the uniform multilayer mirror. Inter-diffusion considerable gave rise to the degradation of reflectivity. To obtain measured reflectivity closed to the expected reflectivity, the inter-diffusion on W-Si and Si-W interfaces should be considered.
Rotating compensator multichannel spectroscopic ellipsometry has been employed to determine the optical functions of various liquids used in chemistry. We attempted three different measurement configurations: (1) air-liquid interface, (2) prism-liquid interface, and (3) liquid-sample interface. In prism-liquid interface, we found that the prism surface had roughness and it should be considered in analysis for accurate results. In liquidsample interface, we had much higher reflection, better sensitivity, and less limitation compared to the other two configurations when crystalline silicon was used as reference sample. We discuss the merit of each configuration and present the optical functions of various liquids. Also we demonstrate Bruggeman effective medium theory to determine the optical properties of mixed liquid.
