In this study, the aeroelastic response and stability of bearingless rotors are investigated using a large deflection beam theory. The outboard main blade, flexbeam, and torque tube are all assumed to be an elastic beam undergoing arbitrary large displacements and rotations. The finite element equations of motion obtained from Hamilton's principle. Two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory is used to evaluate aerodynamic forces. In hover, the modal approach method based on coupled rotating natural modes is used for the stability analysis. In forward flight, the nonlinear periodic blade steady response is obtained by integrating the full finite element equation in time through a coupled trim procedure with a vehicle trim. The results of the full finite element analysis using the large deflection beam theory are compared with those of a previously published modal analysis using the moderate deflection-type beam theory.

An impulse turbine, which is a main component of a liquid rocket engine, needs to be a small size with light weight and generate large power. Since the impulse turbine is being operated under complicated supersonic conditions, flow analysis and performance prediction largely depend on CFD technique. In order to increase the reliability of the prediction code, however, it often requires an experimental data to compare. In this research a rotating turbine rotor with multiple blades is simulated with a two-dimensional stationary cascade to check the effect of major flow parameters. Mach number is measured at nozzle exit by using a pitot tube and the blade thrust was also measured with a load cell. The measured thrust coefficient and the power are compared well with the designed conditions, which proves the design procedures are properly taken.

A two-frame PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique is used to investigate the wake characteristics behind a marine propeller with 4 blades at high Reynolds number. For each of 9 different blade phases from $ 0^{\circ} $ to $ 80^{\circ} $, one hundred and fifty instantaneous velocity fields are measured. They are ensemble averaged to study the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranging from the trailing edge to one propeller diameter (D) downstream location. The phase-averaged mean velocity shows that the trailing vorticity is related to radial velocity jump, and the viscous wake is affected by boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and centrifugal force. Both Galilean decomposition method and vortex identification method using swirling strength calculation are very useful for the study of vortex behaviors En the propeller wake legion. The slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region up to about X/D : 0.53 downstream. Thereafter, unstable oscillation occurs because of the reduction of interaction between the tip vortex and the wake sheet behind the maximum contraction point.

This paper is concerned with the evaluation of mixing performance of a particle mixer, which consists of a vertical cylindrical vessel and a rotating impeller with several blades. We consider four design variables for the mixer blades, such as the angle, length, and number of blades, and the gap between the blades and the vessel bottom. The particle mixing process due to the impeller rotation is simulated using the discrete element method, and the mixing performance is quantitatively evaluated by introducing a mixing index. Analyzing the main effects and interactions of the four design variables through the design-of-experiments approach, it is concluded that the blade angle has the most dominant influence on the mixing performance whereas the gap has no significant influence. In addition, we determine the best combination of design parameters to maximize the mixing performance.

In this study, a small-scaled test system for a tip jet rotor was developed to contribute to the research on unmanned compound rotorcraft. The performance and dynamic characteristics of the tip jet rotor were investigated using the test system. The diameter of the tip jet rotor was set to 2m in consideration of the size of the test site and the pneumatic supply capacity of the. The rotating speed of the rotor was controlled by the pressure of the compressed air. The thrust and forces during the rotor rotation were measured using a load measuring device. A hydraulic actuator was installed for the dynamic test and full-bridge strain gages were attached to the root of each blade to measure the flap, lag, and torsion-wise responses generated when the rotor is excited by the actuator. The performance and dynamic characteristic tests were conducted at various rotor speeds and blade pitches. In order to check the validity of the test results, the results were also compared with the CAMRAD II analysis.

This paper presents the effect of a grid system on the performance of a small Savonius wind turbine installed side-by-side. Turbine performance is compared using three different grid systems; tetrahedral grid having a concentrated circular grid around turbine rotors, the tetrahedral grid having a concentrated rectangular grid around turbine rotors and the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid. The commercial code, SC/Tetra has been used to solve the three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis in the present study. The Savonius turbine rotor has a rotational diameter of 0.226m and an aspect ratio of 1.0. The distance between neighboring rotor tips keeps the same length of the rotor diameter. The variations of pressure and power coefficient are compared with respect to blade rotational angles and rotating frequencies of the turbine blade. Throughout the comparisons of three grid systems, it is noted that the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid has a stable performance compared to the other ones.

The effect of periodic passing wake on the film-coolant flow issuing normally from a flat plate was investigated experimentally. The passing wake was generated by rotating thin circular bars. Depending on the rotational direction the test plate could be simulated as a pressure surface or a suction surface of a gas turbine blade. The phase-averaged velocity components were measured using an X-type hot-wire probe. The Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity and injection hole diameter was 23, 500 and the velocity ratio which is the ratio of film coolant velocity to free-stream velocity was 0.5. The velocity-triangle induced by the wake was similar to that induced by the one generated at the blade trailing edge. The vertical velocity component induced by the passing wake, which approaches to the suction surface and moves away from the pressure surface, played a dominant role in the variation of the flow field. The variation in the phase-averaged velocity on the pressure surface was greater than on the suction surface, but the turbulence kinetic energy variation on the suction surface appeared larger than on the pressure surface.
This paper presents the Campbell diagram analysis of the rotordynamic system using the full order model (FOM) and the reduced order model (ROM) techniques to determine the critical speeds, identify the stability and reduce the computational time. Due to the spin-speed-dependent matrices (e.g., centrifugal stiffening matrix), several model order reduction (MOR) techniques may be considered, such as the modal superposition (MS) method and the Krylov subspace-based MOR techniques (e.g., Ritz vector (RV), quasi-static Ritz vector (QSRV), multifrequency quasi-static Ritz vector (MQSRV), multifrequency/ multi-spin-speed quasi-static Ritz vector (MMQSRV) and the combined Ritz vector & modal superposition (RV+MS) methods). The proposed MMQSRV method in this study is extended from the MQSRV method by incorporating the rotational-speed-dependent stiffness matrices into the Krylov subspace during the MOR process. Thus, the objective of this note is to respond to the question of whether to use the MS method or the Krylov subspace-based MOR technique in establishing the Campbell diagram of the shaft-disc-blade assembly systems in three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA). The Campbell diagrams produced by the FOM and various MOR methods are presented and discussed thoroughly by computing the norm of relative errors (ER). It is found that the RV and the MS methods are dominant at low and high rotating speeds, respectively. More precisely, as the spinning velocity becomes large, the calculated ER produced by the RV method is significantly increased; in contrast, the ER produced by the MS method is smaller and more consistent. From a computational point of view, the MORs have substantially reduced the time computing considerably compared to the FOM. Additionally, the verification of the 3D FE rotordynamic model is also provided and found to be in close agreement with the existing solutions.

Due to the rapidly increasing number of cars and power generation, environmental pollution caused by fine dust is becoming a serious social problem. Especially fine dust becomes an important issue nowadays. More than 50 countries are suffering from fine dust above the recommended level, and each affected country is studying the measures to reduce fine dust and minimize its occurrence. However, at present, it is difficult to collect fine dust data from the various points with fixed fine dust acquisition drones, and also to collect accurate data due to the influence of rotating blades even in the existing drone method. In this paper, we propose a method for collecting fine dust using drones and a sensing parts architecture and show its effectiveness.

In this study, the effect of hole geometry of the cooling system on the flow and temperature field was numerically calculated. The finite volume method was employed to discretize the governing equation based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. The standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used and also the predicted results were compared with the experimental data to validate numerical modeling. The predicted results showed good agreement in all cases. To analyze the effect of the discharge coefficient for slots of different length to width, the inlet chamfering and radiusing holes were considered. The discharge coefficient was increased with increment of the chamfering ratio, radiusing ratio and slot length to width and also the effect of radiusing showed better result than chamfering in all cases. In order to analyze the difference between the predicted results with plenum region and without plenum region, the velocity profiles of jet exit region for a various flow conditions were calculated. The normal velocity components of jet exit showed big difference for the low slot length to width and high blowing rate cases. To analyze the flow phenomena injected from a row of inclined holes in a real turbine blade, three dimensional flow and temperature distribution of the region including plenum, hole and cross stream with flow conditions were numerically calculated. The results have shown three-dimensional flow characteristics, such as the development of counter rotating vortices, jetting effect and low momentum region within the hole in addition to counter rotating vortex structure in the cross stream.
