Root yield, number of missing and diseased plant in each line were investigated in various ginseng farms. Root yield per unit area was negatively correlated to missing percentage. Missing percentage showed significant positive correlation with diseased rate. Among lines yield was significantly different in most fields while missing rate was not, indicating that yield of each line is affected by present shading method but disease occurrence is not. Thus there are two ways of yield increase, shading improvement and disease control.

Ginseng is an important medicinal plant cultivated in East Asia for thousands of years. It is typically cultivated in the same field for 4 to 6 years and is exposed to a variety of pathogens. Among them, ginseng root rot is the main reason that leads to the most severe losses. In this study, endophytic bacteria were isolated from healthy ginseng, and endophytes with antagonistic effect against ginseng root rot pathogens were screened out. Among the 17 strains, three carried antagonistic effect, and were resistant to radicicol that is a mycotoxin produced by ginseng root rot pathogens. Finally, Bacillus velezensis CH-15 was selected due to excellent antagonistic effect and radicicol resistance. When CH-15 was inoculated on ginseng root, it not only inhibited the mycelial growth of the pathogen, but also inhibited the progression of disease. CH-15 also carried biosynthetic genes for bacillomycin D, iturin A, bacilysin, and surfactin. In addition, CH-15 culture filtrate significantly inhibited the growth and conidial germination of pathogens. This study shows that endophytic bacterium CH-15 had antagonistic effect on ginseng root rot pathogens and inhibited the progression of ginseng root rot. We expected that this strain can be a microbial agent to suppress ginseng root rot.
Backgrounds: Kennedy disease is a X-linked recessive disease characterized by bulbar symptoms, proximal muscle weakness, and gynecomastia. Methods: We analyzed clinical symptoms and performed electrodiagnostic studies on 6 patients. Results: We found following features: 1) proximal muscle weakness 2) bulbar symptoms, as dysarthria, facial and tongue atrophy 3) hyporeflexia or areflexia 4) fasciculations, predominantly on face, and proximal upper extremities 5) decreased sensory nerve action potentials(SNAPs) 6) chronic neurogenic changes in needle EMG. Conclusions: Kennedy disease is characterized by degenerative process of anterior horn cell and dorsal root ganglion without upper motor neuron dysfunction. Increased triple nucleotide CAG repeats(>38) in androgen receptor gene of Xp21 will confirm early stage of this disease.
Clubroot disease is one of the most wide-spread and devastating diseases in the cultivation of Chinese cabbage. To develop a protein marker for resistance to clubroot disease in Chinese cabbage, a comparative proteome analysis was performed between a sensitive line, 94SK, and a resistant line, CR Shinki DH. Three proteins of two fold or higher accumulation that are specific to each line were found 3 days after innoculation of the Plasmodiphora brassicae. They are glutamine synthetase, malate dehydrogenase/oxidoreductase and fructose-bisphosphate aldolase in the 94SK and actin, phosphoglycerate kinase, and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase in the CR Shinki line. From the comparison of the synthesized proteins in the 94SK and the CR Shinki, CR Shinki was found to produce more ATP-binding protein for the ABC transporter while 94SK showed a higher level of pathogenesis-related protein 1 production. All of these proteomic variations may lead to the development of molecular markers to accelerate the breeding process.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify a role for endodontic intervention in enhancing the regenerative potential of the periodontal ligament when combined with periodontal treatment in seriously involved teeth with a secondary endodontic component. Methods: Patients who exhibited radiolucency extending to the periapical region, abnormal electric pulp testing values, and deep probing depth derived from primary periodontal disease with secondary endodontic involvement were included. Intentional root canal treatment was applied to those teeth in which the apical lesions were presumed to communicate with those of the periodontal lesion of the teeth that remained vital. In all three selected cases, regenerative periodontal therapy incorporating either bone graft or guided tissue regeneration was instituted 3 months after the endodontic intervention. Results: Remarkable enhancement in radiographic density was noticeable around the affected teeth as evidenced by changes in radiopacity. There was a significant reduction in the probing pocket depth and gain in the clinical attachment level. Chewing discomfort gradually disappeared from the commencement of the combined treatment. Conclusions: An intentional endodontic intervention may be a worthwhile approach for the sophisticated management of teeth suffering from serious attachment loss and alveolar bone destruction with concomitant secondary endodontic involvement.
An antagonistic bacterium, Pseudomonas flurorescens MC07 inhibited the mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium ultimum, Fusarium oxysporum, and Phytophthora capsici in on potato dextrose agan (PDA) and other media. The strain MC07 conlonizes various plant roots and possesses antifungal activity. To determine the role of antifungal activity of the bacterium in disease suppression, a mutant Okm3-4 which lost its activity was isolated after screening 2,500 colonies generated by Omegon-Km insertions. The mutant Okm3-4 showed diminished growth inhibition of R. solani, P. ultimum, F. oxysporum, and Ph. capsici in vitro and had reduced suppressive effects on sesame damping.-off compared to the parental strain. In soils, accumulation of the pathogens by continuous cropping, 90% of sesame plants were killed by natural infection of damping-off whereas, only 29% of plants grown from seeds treated with MC07 were killed. On the other hand, 85% of plants died when sesame seeds were treated with the Okm3-4 cells. This indicated that antifungal activity of MC07 in vitro is directly responsible for the suppression of damping-off disease. Emergence rates of sesame seeds in pots containing diseased soil were 33%. However, MC07 treatments on seeds significantly improved emergence rates, which has similar effects of Benomyl treatment. The mutant Okm3-4 exhibited 53% of emergence rate. This indicated that antifungal activity of MC07 also affects the emergence rate of sesame seeds.

Soilborne diseases pose a serious problem for mulberry cultivation during nursery plantation and established gardens, which cause severe loss in revenue generation of mulberry growers as compared to foliar diseases. Various soilborne diseases affect mulberry. Among them, root knot and root rot affect the established plantation resulting in severe loss in leaf yield apart from deterioration in leaf quality, which is a pre-requisite in successful sericulture to get the good quality of cocoons. Besides, stem-canker, cutting rot, collar rot and die-back, affect the initial establishment and survivability of mulberry plantation in nursery. The problem is difficult to handle, due to the complex nature of the diseases and also involvement of various biotic and abiotic factors. This is compounded by the occurrence of disease complex (especially nematode + soilborne pathogenic microbes) in established mulberry gardens, which facilitates quick spread of the disease and enhance the plant mortality, resulting substantial loss in leaf yield. Therefore, prevention and timely control measures need to be taken up to protect the mulberry plants from different soilborne plant pathogens. In this review article, symptomatology, epidemiology, disease cycle and control measures of soilborne diseases of mulberry are discussed.
Objectives : Based on the Zangfuyaoshibuzheng of Zhang Shanlei, this paper examines the tip/root division of the Zangfu, features of medicinal application according to deficiency/excess or cold/heat, and erroneous cases in the Zangfuxushibiaobenyongyaoshi of Zhang Jiegu. Methods : Categorization according to tip/root, cold/heat, deficiency/excess and respective medicinal applications in the Zangfuxushibiaobenyongyaoshi were organized, followed by thorough analysis based on the annotations in the Zangfuyaoshibuzheng. Results : First, in the treatment principle of the Zangfu diseases, each of their physiological function and pathological mechanism were analyzed so that the disease patterns are understood accurately and treated accordingly. Second, in categorizing treatment methods, terminology application was modified in overlapping or ambiguous cases so that they could be better distinguished. Third, medicinal categories that were designated to treat each Zangfu disease were explained well based on unique features. In cases where medicinals were falsely included, they were identified and corrected based on sound reasoning. Conclusions : The pattern diagnosis in the Zangfuyaoshibuzheng is clear, and medicinal application analysis is intelligible. As it thoroughly corrects and revises errors in Zhang Jiegu's theories, it could provide valuable assistance in selecting each medicinals when treating disease patterns of the Five Zang.
Objectives : The root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus has been frequently used to treat patients with skin diseases in Korea. Recently, wild root of D. dasycarpus are reported to induce liver injury. Methods : Traditional uses of D. dasycarpus for skin diseases were analysed bibliographically. In addition, reported cases were collected and analysed using pubmed and national digital library. Results : In taiwan, D. dasycarpus revealed to be one of major herbs for skin diseases and many researchers in worldwide had reported its dermatological efficacies. Reported cases related in liver injury described that hepatocellular or cholestatic liver injury were seen in patients eating wild root of D. dasycarpus. In addition, 6 cases in worldwide and 1 case in Korea showed that patients with drug induced liver injury (DILI) ingested not root bark of D. dasycarpus but prescriptions containing root bark of D. dasycarpus. These mean that wild root of D. dasycarpus (Bongsam or Bongwhangsam) was estimated to be closely related in DILI. Whereas, it was difficult to confirm direct correlation between root bark of D. dasycarpus used as herbal medicine by doctor of Korean medicine and DILI. Conclusions : these results imply that wild root of D. dasycarpus is closely related in DILI and strong recommendation not to take it without consultation by experts is needed. In addition, although there are no evidences of direct correlation between root bark of D. dasycarpus and DILI, doctor of Korean medicines should pay attention to use root bark of D. dasycarpus in their clinics.
Significant reduction in disease severity of bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum) on the susceptible tobacco cultivar BY 4 was observed until mid-July in a naturally infested field when bacterial suspensions of avirulent isolate were applied to tobacco root zones at one day before and fourty days after transplanting into the field. However, rapid increase in disease severity after mid-July resulted in the same severity $(70\%)$ as on cultivar BY 4 without the application of the avirulent bacterial suspension at the end of the season. Yield increase in cultivar BY 4 was $35\%$ due to the treatment, resulting in $10\%$ price increase. The suppression me chanism did not appear to be dependent upon the inhibition of the virulent bacterial multiplication by the avirulent bacteria in tobacco rhizosphere soil because of no significant difference in the density of the patho genic bacteria between treated and untreated plant root zones. However. penetration of the virulent bacteria into the root systems and their multiplication in tobacco stem were inhibited remarkably by preinoculation with avirulent one, suggesting that those are related to the suppression of disease incidence.
