  • A 3-ply clad metal consisting of aluminum and copper was fabricated by roll bonding process and the microstructures and mechanical properties of the roll-bonded and post-roll-bonding heat treated Cu/Al/Cu clad metal were investigated. A brittle interfacial reaction layer formed at the Cu/Al interfaces at and above $400^{\circ}C$. The thickness of the reaction layer increased from $12{\mu}m$ at $400^{\circ}C$ to $28{\mu}m$ at $500^{\circ}C$. The stress-strain curves demonstrated that the strength decreased and the ductility increased with heat treatment up to $400^{\circ}C$. The clad metal heat treated at $300^{\circ}C$ with no indication of a reaction layer exhibited an excellent combination of the strength and ductility and no delamination of layers up to final fracture in the tensile testing. Above $400^{\circ}C$, the ductility decreased rasxpidly with little change of strength, reflecting the brittle nature of the intermetallic interlayers. In Cu/Al/Cu clad heat treated above $400^{\circ}C$, periodic parallel cracks perpendicular to the stress axis were observed at the interfacial reaction layer. In-situ optical microscopic observation revealed that cracks were formed in the Cu layer due to the strain concentration in the vicinity of horizontal cracks in the intermetallic layer, promoting the premature fracture of Cu layer. Vertical cracks parallel to the stress axis were also formed at 15% strain at $500^{\circ}C$, leading to the delamination of the Cu and Al layers.

  • The Goss texture component of {110}<001> is well known as one of the best texture components to improve the magnetic properties of electrical steel sheets. The small amount of the Goss texture component is obtained at the surface of the steel sheet by shear deformation due to friction between the steel sheet and the roll during conventional symmetric rolling. This study aims to identify a method to obtain high intensity of the Goss texture component not only at the surface but in the whole layer of the steel sheet by shear deformation of asymmetric rolling. Low carbon steel sheets, which have different initial texture, were asymmetrically rolled by about 50%, 70%, and 80%. The pole figures of the top, center, and bottom layers of the initial and asymmetrically rolled low carbon steel sheets were measured by an X-ray diffractometer. Based on the measured pole figures of these samples, the intensities of the main texture components were analyzed for the initial and asymmetrically rolled low carbon steel sheets. As a result, the initial low carbon steel sheet with the γ-fiber component showed a higher intensity of the Goss texture component in the whole layer than the steel sheet with other texture components after asymmetric rolling.

  • Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Bearings (FREBs) are a relatively new type of laminated bearings that can be used as seismic/vibration isolators or bridge bearings. In an unbonded (U)-FREB, the bearing is placed between the top and bottom supports with no bonding or fastening provided at its contact surfaces. Under shear loads the top and bottom faces of a U-FREB roll off the contact supports and the bearing exhibits rollover deformation. As a result of rollover deformation, the horizontal response characteristics of U-FREBs are significantly different than conventional elastomeric bearings that are employed in bonded application. Current literature lacks an efficient analytical horizontal stiffness solution for this type of bearings. This paper presents two simplified analytical models for horizontal stiffness evaluation of U-FREBs. Both models assume that the resistance to shear loads is only provided by an effective region of the bearing that sustains significant shear strains. The presented models are different in the way they relate this effective region to the horizontal bearing displacements. In comparison with experimental results and finite element analyses, the analytical models that are presented in this paper are found to be sufficiently accurate to be used in the preliminary design of U-FREBs.

  • In the research of the rolling of strip, producing the strip with a close tolerance of thickness over the rolling direction was a principal object. But it was solved by the contribution of two-dimensional theory of rolling and the development of automatic gauge control system. And new requirements for the study of flatness, crown of rolled strip and edge drop grow up recently. These phenomena are closely related with the thickness distribution along the lateral direction of rolled strip. To analyse the thickness distribution of rolled strip along the lateral direction, elastic deformation of rolls and plastic deformation of work material must be discussed simultaneously. In this report, an approximate three-dimensional analysis based on Tozawa's three dimensional approach was applied to 12 cases of different rolling conditions and the numerical results were investigated. Especially stresses were laid upon the investigation of optimal boundary position between the three-dimensional analysis region and the plane strain analysis region.

  • The continuous casting process has been adopted increasingly in recent years to save both energy and labor. It has experienced a rapid development in the production of semi-finished steel products, replacing the conventional route of ingot casting plus rolling. To achieve this good merit, however, more studies about a heat transfer mechanism between roll and slab are needed. So this paper shows the results of the deformation behavior of steel cast slabs, which are about the solidification and heat transfer. This study is used to prevent internal cracks of a slab in a bending and unbending zone. The value of moving strand shell bulging between two supporting rollers under ferrostatic pressure and slab-self weight has been computed in terms of creep and elastic-plasticity. The high strand distributions in solidified shell undergoes a series of bulging are calculated with boundary condition a very closed to continuous steel cast slabs productions.

  • Bi-2223/Ag HTS wires have been fabricated by the PIT(powder in tube)process. Intermediate annealing was carried out to increase the homogenization and uniformity of the superconducting filaments embedded in the silver matrix during the deformation process that is important to sustain the engineering critical current density in long superconducting wire. Intermediate annealing act to release the deformation hardening of the superconducting wires during drawing process. Rolling parameters were investigated to roll the superconducting tapes with uniform thickness, width and winding tensions. Critical current of 60 m long superconducting tapes was measured 54.3 A continuously after final sintering heat treatment. The phase analysis of Bi-2223/Ag superconducting tapes are examined by the XRD.

  • In order to fabricate the aluminum alloys with good drawability, the textures evolution of the AA5182 sheets after rolling and annealing was studied. The measurement of the deformation textures was carried out for the sheets which were cold rolled with high reduction ratio by using the symmetric roll. In addition, the change of the recrystallization texture was investigated after heat-treatments of the rolled sheets with various heat treatment conditions. Rolling without lubrication and subsequent annealing led to the formation of favorable $rot-C_{ND}\;\{001\}<110>\;and\;{\gamma}-fiber ND//<111>$ textures in AA5182 sheets. From the results, the ${\gamma}$-fiber ND//<111> component well evolved during rolling at highest reduction ratio (over $90\%$, l/d parameter of 6.77). Among shear deformation textures, the ${\gamma}$-fiber ND//<111> was not rotated in holding time of $180\~7,200$ seconds at $350^{\circ}C$. The Monte-Carlo technique was used and could be representatively simulated these textures evolution during recrystallization.

  • The span-lengthening of PSC I girder has increased the risk of lateral instability of the girder with the increases in the aspect ratio and self-weight of the girder. Recently, collapses of PSC I girder during construction raise the necessity of evaluating the lateral instability of the girder. Thus, the present study evaluated the lateral behavior and instability of PSC I girders under wind load, regarded as one of the main causes of the roll-over collapse during construction. Lateral instability of the girder is mainly dependent on the length of the girder and the stiffness of the support. The analysis results of this study showed the decrease in the critical wind load and the increase in the critical deformation and angle of the girder, leading to the lateral instability of the girder. Finally, this study proposed analytical equations that can predict the critical amount of wind load and lateral deformation of the girder, which would provide quantitative management values to maintain lateral stability of PSC I girder during construction.

  • Generally, the vertical roll process is used to achieve extensive width reduction in hot strip mill. However, it is difficult to avoid the defects such as dog-bone and seam-defect. The sizing press has been developed in response to the defects mentioned above. Especially, this study is carried out to investigate the deformation of slab by two-step sizing press. The deformation behavior in the width sizing process is more favorable than that in conventional vertical rolling edger. The objective of this study is to determine the optimal anvil shape parameters in the sizing press with two-step die from the viewpoint of edge-seam length. In general, the edge-seam defect occurs parallel to the rolling direction at both edges in horizontal rolling process after sizing press. The optimal combination of the parameters is determined by FE-simulation and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The slab deformation in sizing press with convex anvil is analyzed by FE-simulation. The most suitable profile of the anvil is also discussed fur the improvement of trimming loss because of the side seam defect by FE-simulation and ANN.

  • This paper introduces a preform design method for a ring rolling process with an outer step. Underfilling is one of the general defects of the profile ring rolling process. It occurs when the deformation amount is small or step depth of the profiled region is large. To prevent underfilling, increasing the deformation amount or using a preform of size similar to that of the final product are required. Furthermore, the filling limit equation is suggested based on the shape factor and deformation ratio for preventing defects in the products. The filling limit equation has been derived through finite element analyses and production tests for four different cases. For verifying the suggested method, realsized profile rolling tests were performed, and test results were compared with the predictions of the equation.
