  • In this study, the illustrations in 16 elementary science textbooks developed under the 2007 Revised National Curriculum were analyzed in the aspect of gender-role stereotyping, and the results were compared with those of the 7th National Curriculum. The frequencies of male and female who appeared on textbook illustrations were counted, and the types of activities and the characters of them were analyzed. Most pupils were found to be active, and female pupils appearing in the textbooks were more than male pupils. In all types of activities for pupils, the difference between male and female was decreased compared with that of the 7th National Curriculum. Male and female pupils were illustrated in learning activities with almost equal frequencies, but male pupils were still more frequently represented than female pupils in other activities. Gender difference in adults was increased and the difference was statistically significant. Gender difference in houseworks was not large, but the difference in outdoor activities was statistically significant. Especially, the jobs of adults were illustrated as male-centered, and scientists appearing in the textbook illustrations were also mostly male.

  • The purpose of this research is to consider whether current science textbook is designed to let children properly obtain scientific knowledge through research study and at the same time provide an implication to help development of science textbook for the 2015 revised curriculum through comparing and analyzing of illustration in science textbooks of grade 5 and 6 published based on the 2007 curriculum and on the 2009 revised curriculum. The conclusion of comparison and analysis on illustration of the grade 5 and 6 science textbooks in the 2007 curriculum and the 2009 revised curriculum as follows. First, according to the comparison and analysis result on in the textbook, science textbook of year 2009 revised for grade 5 and 6 had 1.65 illustration per page and for the 2007 curriculum, it had 1.98 illustrations per page having 0.83 times more illustrations than that of the previous one. Second, the types of illustrations both textbooks had a higher ratio of pictures that are very detailed and objective which can identify scientific facts. In terms of role of illustration, illustrations providing various and realistic data related to the learning for students to have enough scientific experiences accounted for the most ratios.

  • The purpose of this research is to examine the current state of inserting illustrations in science textbooks under the 7th Revised Educational Curriculum which is currently enforced in all grades of elementary schools, and to compare and analyze the external and internal differences in illustrations in science textbooks of elementary schools in Tanzania and Korea to present desirable direction of producing illustrations. There are not only some differences in rate of the kinds and role of the illustrations in grades, but also in both countries. In Korea textbooks, Photographs were mainly used to guide the students into experiments and to train the students in analyzing and interpreting data. In contrast, the Tanzania textbooks place more emphasis on pictures to enhance their interests and curiosity and understand. The Korea textbooks have to place more various illustrations instead of photos but the Tanzania textbooks should place more photos. As a result the addition of more diverse forms of illustrations and the re-organization of illustrations according to the topic should be considersd in future Korea and Tanzania textbooks.

  • The purpose of this research is to examine the current state of inserting illustrations in science textbooks under the 7th Revised Educational Curriculum which is currently enforced in all grades of elementary schools, and to compare and analyze the external and internal differences in illustrations in science textbooks of elementary schools in Singapore and Korea and to present desirable direction of producing illustrations. There are not only some differences in rate of the kinds and role of the illustrations in grades, but also in both countries. For example, in the case of illustrations for motivation, in both Korea and Singapore, interesting photos related to overall contents with regard to the contents of the unit are used. But in the 3rd and 4th grade class in Singapore, story types of cartoons related to learning subjects are presented to draw students' interest and attention. These need to be considered when developing textbook illustrations in the future.

  • This study examined the illustrations in the elementary school textbooks which was followed by identifying the parts that displayed gender-discriminating elements or traditional gender roles. The research results are as follows: 1) The ratio of man and woman in the figures appearing in those illustrations was 1.33:1, which means there were more men than women in the illustrations and that there was no balance in the gender distribution among the figures. 2) Male figures were presented as the protagonists in 39.7% of the illustrations, female figures in 25.5%, and both male and female figures in 34.8%. The results indicate that there were much more illustrations in which men were the protagonists than those in which women were. 3) The occupations of the adults in the illustrations were analyzed. As a result, the ratio of man and woman with a job was about 2:1, which implies that there were twice as many male professionals than female ones. Men had over 60 kinds of occupations and women had only 45 kinds of occupations with 59.5% of them concentrated in four jobs including teaching, farming and fishing, doing artistic works, and selling things. 4) The case analysis results of the illustrations in the textbooks demonstrate that the traditional gender roles of a father and mother were followed and that there were gender stereotypes in describing the characteristics of man and woman. Gender dichotomy was observed in the vocations. Men were the leading players in economic, political, and cultural activities, and most of the historical figures were men. Meanwhile, women were depicted as the subjects of economic activities and completely isolated and alienated from political, historical, and cultural activities. It turned out that the figures of the illustrations in the current elementary school textbooks had gender discriminating elements and profoundly reflected the stereotypes for gender roles.

  • In this study, the illustrations in the 27 middle school science textbooks developed under the 2009 Revised National Curriculum were analyzed in the aspect of gender-role stereotype, and the results were compared with those of the 2007 Revised National Curriculum. The results of the analyses revealed that male pupils in the illustrations appeared more frequently than female pupils at all grades, and that the gender gap of pupils appeared in the illustrations slightly increased in comparison with those of the precedent curriculum. Similar to those of the precedent curriculum, the gender gap in other activities were particularly large regardless of publishers. • This study analyzed the images of father and mother featured in the illustrations of the middle and high school textbooks, paying attention to the roles of the school education for the effective gender equality. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the middle and high school textbooks would serve for a balanced gender role through their illustrations. To this end, this study sampled a total of 36 middle and high school textbooks: for the middle schoolers, and for high schoolers, and thereby, selected their illustrations of parents, and then, analyzed them in terms of their external aspects and contents. Summing up, it could be confirmed through the middle and high school textbooks that most of their illustrations show gender-equal roles, while some of them reflect a fixed conception of the gender roles. Since the homes are the bases for socialization of the children about the gender roles, it is required of our middle and high schools to implement a gender-equal education. As seen in the results of this study, some illustrations of our middle and high school 'technology and home Education' textbooks feature the mothers as housekeeper and the fathers as family heads creating the goods and services. Hence, it is urgent to correct such conception of the patriarchal gender roles.
