An Efficient Color Edge Detection Using the Mahalanobis Distance

  • The performance of edge detection often relies on its ability to correctly determine the dissimilarities of connected pixels. For grayscale images, the dissimilarity of two pixels is estimated by a scalar difference of their intensities and for color images, this is done by using the vector difference (color distance) of the three-color components. The Euclidean distance in the RGB color space typically measures a color distance. However, the RGB space is not suitable for edge detection since its color components do not coincide with the information human perception uses to separate objects from backgrounds. In this paper, we propose a novel method for color edge detection by taking advantage of the HSV color space and the Mahalanobis distance. The HSV space models colors in a manner similar to human perception. The Mahalanobis distance independently considers the hue, saturation, and lightness and gives them different degrees of contribution for the measurement of color distances. Therefore, our method is robust against the change of lightness as compared to previous approaches. Furthermore, we will introduce a noise-resistant technique for determining image gradients. Various experiments on simulated and real-world images show that our approach outperforms several existing methods, especially when the images vary in lightness or are corrupted by noise.

  • 무선 센서 네트워크에서, 각 센서 노드들로부터 수집된 정보를 효율적으로 활용하기 위해 센서 노드의 정확한 위치 정보는 필수적이다. 센서 노드의 위치를 추정하는 다양한 기법들 중, 일반적으로 많이 사용되는 수신신호세기(RSS)기법은 추가적인 하드웨어 자원 없이 쉽게 구현될 수 있으나 채널 환경에 따라 다양한 표본 데이터들이 수집 될 수 있고, 특히 이상점(outlier)이 포함 될 수 있다. 이러한 이상점들은, 수집된 표본들로부터 통계적 분석(statistical analysis)에 상당한 요인을 미치며 위치 추정 오차를 발생시키는 주요한 원인이 된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는, 이상점이 포함 된 표본들로부터 정확한 위치 추정을 위해 Robust Statistics를 적용한 가우시안 필터 알고리즘을 제안한다. 제안한 알고리즘은 이상점이 포함된 표본들로부터 이상점을 제거하고, 낮은 확률값의 표본들을 배제함으로써 위치 추정의 정확도를 향상시킨다. 시뮬레이션 결과로부터, 이상점이 포함 된 표본들로부터 비 가우시안적 환경에서 제안된 방법의 위치 추정의 정확성 향상과 강인성을 확인하였다.

Probabilistic evaluation of separation distance between two adjacent structures

  • Structural pounding is commonly observed phenomenon during major ground motion, which can cause both structural and architectural damages. To reduce the amount of damage from pounding, the best and effective way is to increase the separation distance. Generally, existing design procedures for determining the separation distance between adjacent buildings subjected to structural pounding are based on approximations of the buildings' peak relative displacement. These procedures are based on unknown safety levels. The aim of this research is to estimate probabilistic separation distance between adjacent structures by considering the variability in the system and uncertainties in the earthquakes characteristics through comprehensive numerical simulations. A large number of models were generated using a robust Monte-Carlo simulation. In total, 6.54 million time-history analyses were performed over the adopted models using an ensemble of 25 ground motions as seismic input within OpenSees software. The results show that a gap size of 50%, 70% and 100% of the considered design code for the structural periods in the range of 0.1-0.5 s, leads to have the probability of pounding about 41.5%, 18% and 5.8%, respectively. Finally, based on the results, two equations are developed for probabilistic determination of needed structural separation distance.

3차원 메쉬 모델을 위한 강인한 워터마킹 기법 (Robust Watermarking Algorithm for 3D Mesh Models)

  • 본 논문에서는 3차원 메쉬 모델에 적용되는 강인한 워터마킹 알고리듬을 제안한다. 제안하는 알고리듬에서 워터마크는 3차원 모델로부터 추출된 2차원 영상에 삽입된다. 이 2차원 영상의 화소 값은 정해진 기준점들로부터 3차원 모델의 표면까지의 거리이며, 이를 거리 영상이라 한다. 워터마크는 거리 영상에 삽입되며, 워터마크된 거리 영상을 이용하여 3차원 모델의 꼭지점 좌표를 변경하면 워터마크가 삽입된 3차원 모델을 얻는다. 워터마크의 추출은 워터마크가 삽입된 모델로부터 거리영상을 얻고, 이 영상에서 워터마크를 추출한다. 워터마크 추출에는 원본 모델이 필요하며 원본과의 정합이 필요하다. 실험을 통해 제안하는 알고리듬이 회전, 병진, 비례조절, 가우스 잡음, 메쉬 간략화, 꼭지점 양자화에 강인함을 확인하였다.

강인한 손가락 끝 추출과 확장된 CAMSHIFT 알고리즘을 이용한 자연스러운 Human-Robot Interaction을 위한 손동작 인식 (A Robust Fingertip Extraction and Extended CAMSHIFT based Hand Gesture Recognition for Natural Human-like Human-Robot Interaction)

  • In this paper, we propose a robust fingertip extraction and extended Continuously Adaptive Mean Shift (CAMSHIFT) based robust hand gesture recognition for natural human-like HRI (Human-Robot Interaction). Firstly, for efficient and rapid hand detection, the hand candidate regions are segmented by the combination with robust $YC_bC_r$ skin color model and haar-like features based adaboost. Using the extracted hand candidate regions, we estimate the palm region and fingertip position from distance transformation based voting and geometrical feature of hands. From the hand orientation and palm center position, we find the optimal fingertip position and its orientation. Then using extended CAMSHIFT, we reliably track the 2D hand gesture trajectory with extracted fingertip. Finally, we applied the conditional density propagation (CONDENSATION) to recognize the pre-defined temporal motion trajectories. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only rapidly extracts the hand region with accurately extracted fingertip and its angle but also robustly tracks the hand under different illumination, size and rotation conditions. Using these results, we successfully recognize the multiple hand gestures.

무인차량의 강인한 조향제어 시스템 설계에 관한 연구 (Development of Steering System for Unmanned Vehicle by Using Robust Control)

  • The automatic steering system for unmanned vehicle was developed. The magnet and MR (Magnetoresistive) sensors are used for the tue detecting system. The lateral distance between sensor and the center line of the road is determined by the linearization of the distance according to the output. The PD control theory is used for the design of the controller to compare with $H_\infty$ control theory. The $H_\infty$ control theory is used for the design of the controller to reduce the disturbance. The performance of the PD controller and $H_\infty$ controller is compared in simulations and tests. The PD controller is easy to tune in the test site. The $H_\infty$ controller is robust far the disturbances in the test results.

심리 음향 켑스트럼 평균 차감법을 이용한 이동 전화망에서의 음질 평가 (Speech Quality Measure in a Mobile Communication System Using PLP Cepstral Distance with CMS)

  • For the set up, management and repair of a mobile communication system, continuous estimation of speech quality is required. Speech quality measurement can be conducted by listener's judgement in a subjective test such as MOS (Mean Opinion Score) test. However, this method is laborious, expensive and time-consuming, it is advisable to predict subjective speech quality via objective measures. This paper presents a robust objective speech quality measure, PLP-CMS (Perceptual Linear Predictive-Cepstral Mean Subtraction), which can predict subjective speech quality in mobile communication systems. PLP-CMS has a high correlation with subjective quality owing to PLP (Perceptual Linear Predictive) analysis and shows a robust performance not being influenced by PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) channel effects due to CMS (Cepstral Mean Subtraction). To prove the performance of our proposed algorithm, we carried out subjective and objective quality estimation on speech samples which are variously distorted in a real mobile communication system. As a result, we demonstrated that PLP-CMS has a higher correlation with subjective quality than PSQM (Perceptual Speech Quality Measure) and PLP-CD (Perceptual Linear Predictive-Cepstral Distance).

MANETs의 AODV기반 향상된 견고한 라우팅 프로토콜 (An Enhanced Robust Routing Protocol in AODV over MANETs)

  • 노드의 이동성과 한정된 배터리 용량으로 무선애드혹 네트워크에서는 종종 경로 단절이나 패킷 손실이 발생한다. 본 논문에서는 수신 신호 세기의 변화를 측정함으로써 경로 단절 확률과 패킷손실을 줄일 수 있는 AODV (Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing)에 기반을 둔 향상된 라우팅 프로토콜을 제안한다. 라우팅을 결정하기 위해 노드 이동성과 경로의 홉으로 이루어진 새로운 측정 함수를 사용하고, 데이터 전송 중 노드의 움직임에 의한 경로의 단절을 방지하기 위해 새로운 경로 관리 기법을 소개한다. 이웃 노드의 움직임을 감지되면, 경로가 단절되기 전에 라우팅 에이전트는 다음 홉 노드를 이웃노드로 변경한다. 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해 제안한 라우팅 기법의 성능이 기존의 AODV 방식보다 우수함을 보인다.

Interference Mitigation Technique for the Sharing between IMT-Advanced and Fixed Satellite Service

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust interference mitigation technique based on a nullsteering multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) spatial division multiple access (SDMA) scheme for frequency sharing between IMT-advanced and fixed satellite service (FSS) in the 3400-4200 and 4500-4800 MHz bands. In the proposed scheme, the pre-existing precoding matrix for SDMA unitary precoded (UPC) MIMO proposed by the authors is modified to construct nulls in the spatial spectrum corresponding to the direction angles of the victim FSS earth station (ES). Furthermore, a numerical formula to calculate the power of the interference signal received at the FSS ES when IMT-Advanced base stations (BS) are operated with the interference mitigation technique is presented. This formula can be derived in closed form and is simply implemented with the help of simulation, resulting in significantly reduced time to obtain the solution. Finally, the frequency sharing results are analyzed in the co-channel and adjacent channel with respect to minimum separation distance and direction of FSS earth station (DOE). Simulation results indicate that the proposed mitigation scheme is highly efficient in terms of reducing the separation distance as well as robust against DOE estimation errors.

Fingerprint Minutiae Matching Algorithm using Distance Histogram of Neighborhood

  • Fingerprint verification is being adopted widely to provide positive identification with a high degree of confidence in all practical areas. This popular usage requires reliable methods for matching of these patterns. To meet the latest expectations, the paper presents a pair wise distance histogram method for fingerprint matching. Here, we introduced a randomized algorithm which exploits pair wise distances between the pairs of minutiae, as a basic feature for match. The method undergoes two steps for completion i.e. first it performs the matching locally then global matching parameters are calculated in second step. The proposed method is robust to common problems that fingerprint matching faces, such as scaling, rotation, translational changes and missing points etc. The paper includes the test of algorithm on various randomly generated minutiae and real fingerprints as well. The results of the tests resemble qualities and utility of method in related field.
