The x-ray pulsar GX 1+4 was observed by us in four balloon- borne experiments carried out from Hyderabad, India during 1991-1995 period with a hard x-ray telescope. The x-ray telescope consists of two collimated large area xenon-filled proportional counters with an effective area of $2400 cm^2$, a field of view of $5^{\circ}{\times}5^{\circ}$ and sensitive in the energy band of 20 - 100 keV. The pulsar was detected in bright state in two of the four experiments and x-ray pulsations with 120 second period were detected clearly. Pulsation period, rate of change of period with time, pulse fraction, pulse profile and energy spectra of the source were determined from these studies. During March 1995 observation, the x-ray pulse of GX 1+4 was found to be double-peaked compared to a single-peak pulse profile detected in December 1993. Details of these results are presented and their interpretation discussed in terms of the current accretion models of x-ray binaries.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this article is to investigate the predicted life of jointed concrete pavement (JCP) with two variables effecting on axle load spectra (ALS). The first variable is different data acquisition methods whether using high-speed weigh-in-motion (HS-WIM) or not and the other one is spectra distribution due to overweight enforcement on main-lane of expressway using HS-WIM. METHODS : Three sets of ALS had been collected i) ALS provided by Korea Pavement Research Program (KPRP), which had been obtained without using HS-WIM ii) ALS collected by HS-WIM before the enforcement at Kimcheon and Seonsan site iii) ALS collected after the enforcement at the same sites. And all ALS had been classified into twelve vehicle classes and four axle types to compare each other. Among the vehicle classes, class 6, 7, 10 and 12 were selected as the major target for comparing each ALS because these were considered as the primary trucks with a high rate of overweight loading. In order to analyze the performance of JCP based on pavement life, fatigue crack and International Roughness Index (IRI) were predicted using road pavement design program developed by KPRP and each ALS with same annual average daily traffic (AADT) was applied to design slab thickness. RESULTS : Comparison ALS of KPRP with those of HS-WIM shows that the ALS of KPRP has a low percentage of heavy spectra such as 6~9 tonnes for single axle, 18~21 tonnes for tandem axle and 27~30 tonnes for tridem axle than other two ALS of HS-WIM in most vehicle classes and axle types. It means that ALS of KPRP was underestimated. And after the enforcement, percentage of heavy spectra close to 10 tonnes per an axle are lowered than before the enforcement by the effect of overweight enforcement because the spectra are related to overweight regulation. Prediction results of pavement life for each ALS present that the ALS of HS-WIM collected before the enforcement makes the pavement life short more than others. On the other hand, the ALS of KPRP causes the longest life under same thickness of slab. Thus, it is possible that actual performance life of JCP under the traffic like ALS of HS-WIM could be short than predicted life if the pavement was designed based on ALS provided by KPRP. CONCLUSIONS : It is necessary to choose more reliable and practical ALS when designing JCP because ALS can be fairly affected by acquisition methods. In addition, it is important to extend performance life of the pavement in service by controlling traffic load such as overweight enforcement.
The suspension bridge is divided by an earth anchor and a self-anchor type according to the anchorage type. This study is to evaluate the dynamic effect of moving vehicles to suspension bridges. The results were presented with the dynamic magnification factor (DMF) by the effect of vehicle speed and weight according to the anchorage type. The vehicle model has 6 degrees of freedom to idealize nonlinear multi-leaf suspensions and elastic tires of tractor-trailer. The bridge was modelled with the 3-dimensional frame element and 3-dimensional elastic catenary cable element. The condition of deck surface is considered using the actual road spectra.

The power spectral density (PSD) for the road surface roughness on the bridges of minor roads in Wonju city and Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do is presented. To obtain the PSD, the road surface roughness on 18 different bridges with various superstructure type and span is measured by GPS at every 10 to 30cm interval. Assuming the PSD as the stationary normal probability process with zero mean value, the PSD of measured road surface roughness is obtained by applying the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM). A simple formula in evaluating the PSD of RC slab bridge, Rahmen bridge and PSC I-girder bridge which is applicable to the dynamic response analysis of bridges considering the road surface roughness is proposed. Using the calculated PSD curves, the road surface conditions on the 18 bridges are evaluated. The statistical relationship between the PSD and the IRI is presented by applying linear regression and correlation analysis.

Installing noise barriers is the most common method for reducing the highway traffic noise to the road side residential area. After the report about edge potential concept of a noise barrier, various types of noise reducing devices(NRDs) called "noise reducers" have been suggested for getting more shielding effect on the top of highway noise barriers. But, it has been doubtful about effect of the NRDs in field because there was no appropriate and unified method to estimate the acoustic performance by using field measurement of the NRDs in Korea. In this study, the authors have considered to setup a practical method to test and estimate the acoustic performance of NRDs. For eliminating the noise reduction effect of the NRDs height itself, the source and measuring points are adjusted as highly as the NRDs height. For the frequency weighting in the estimation of the NRDs effect, the highway noise spectra were measured at asphalt and concrete road side and then averaged for a unit spectral parameter.
This study predicts the of the hysteretic friction of a rubber block sliding on an SMA asphalt road. The friction of filled rubber on a rough surface is primarily determined by two elements:the viscoelasticity of the rubber and the multi-scale perspective asperities of the road. The surface asperities of the substrate exert osillating forces on the rubber surface leading to energy dissipation via the internal friction of the rubber when rubber slides on a hard and rough substrate. This study defines the power spectra at different length scales by using a high-resolution surface profilometer, and uses rubber and road surface samples to conduct friction tests. I consider in detail the case when the substrate surface has a self affine fractal structure. The theory developed by Persson is applied to describe these tests through comparison with the hysteretic friction coefficient relevant to the energy dissipation of the viscoelastic rubber attributable to cyclic deformation. The results showed differences in the absolute values of predicted and measured friction, but with high correlation between these values. Hence, the friction prediction model is an appropriate tool for separating the effects of each factor. Therefore, this model will contribute to clearer understanding of the fundamental principles of rubber friction.

In this paper, a Raman spectrometer is designed to detect chemicals contaminating the ground. The system is based on Raman spectroscopy, which is spectral analysis of scattered light from chemicals, induced by a laser. The system consists of a transmitting-optics module with a laser to induce Raman-scattered light from the sample, a receiving-optics module to collect the scattered light, and a spectrograph to separate the collected light into a wavelength spectrum. The telescope, a part of the receiving-optics module, is designed to produce a focal spot in the same position for variable measurement distances using the code V simulator, considering the distance change between the system and the road. The Raman spectra of 12 chemicals on a glass surface and on a concrete sample were measured. Intensity differences between the Raman spectra acquired on a glass surface and on a concrete sample were observed, but the characteristics of the spectra according to the chemicals on them were similar. Additionally, the Raman spectrum of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) was measured at various distances. The measured and simulated optical throughputs were similar. In conclusion, it is confirmed that with this system the Raman spectrum can be measured, irrespective of the distance change.

Traffic load comprise primary input to pavement design causing pavement damage. therefore it should be proceeded suitable traffic load distribution modeling for pavement design and analysis. Traffic load have been represented by equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) which convert mixed traffic stream into one value for design purposes. But there are some limit to apply ESALs to other roads because it is empirical value developed as part of the original AASHO(American Association of State Highway Officials) road test. There have been many efforts to solve these problems. Several leading country have implemented M-E(Mechanistic-Empirical) design procedures based on mechanical concept. As a result, they established traffic load quantification method using load distribution model known as Axle Load Spectra. This paper details Axle Load Spectra and presents axle load distribution model based on normal mixture distribution function using truck load data collected by WIM system installed in national highway. Axle load spectra and axle load distribution model presented in this paper could be useful for basic data when making traffic load quantification plan for pavement design, overweight vehicle permit plan and pavement maintenance cost plan.
PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to determine the milling temperature that minimizes the binder-induced damage to the aggregate; this is achieved by evaluating the temperature dependence of the viscosity of the asphalt binder, with the aim of developing an effective heating process for warm in-place recycling. METHODS : The validity of the indoor test was confirmed by conducting an internal heating test based on the on-site heating test. In addition, the adhesive power of the binder was measured at various temperatures ($30^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, $70^{\circ}C$) via three types of measuring methods. RESULTS: The surface temperature spectrum of field test was slight different with that of laboratory test. But, the spectra of inner temperature between the field and the laboratory was almost similar. Also, the adhesion of the asphalt binder was measured from $30^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. The adhesion of the binder was significantly decreased from $60^{\circ}C$. Contrary to other temperature, the adhesion was slightly changed from $60^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. Also the inner temperature between two different heating methods was shown similar temperature spectra. CONCLUSIONS: The pavement heating temperature spectrum of hot in place recycling method was simulated by a laboratory test. Based on this study, the optimum temperature was $60^{\circ}C{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ for reducing aggregate damage during milling process. The susceptibility heating method developed in this study can be maintained the optimum inner temperature range.
This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of installation dimensions of speed control humps based on the theoretical dynamic analyses. The field surveys of speed control humps were performed first to compare their sizes with those suggested in the installation standard. Then, the displacement response spectra under impact loads were obtained using the single degree of freedom models where the vehicle and human were assumed to combine completely. The analysis results showed that the human perception became larger as the width and height of the humps increased, but the extremely higher uncomfortableness should be avoided. In addition, the ratio between the width and height should be considered when the humps are designed and installed because the ratio governs the vertical acceleration magnitude.
