Recently, there are increasing needs to provide sufficient information on road signs for expanding cities and traffic networks. Improving efficiency of direction guidance information from road signs not only requires criteria for but also systematic approach to selecting place names that appear on road sings. As such, this paper looks at road direction information from existing road signs that leads to Suwon and investigates whether the current system of road sings provides efficient, systematic and continuous direction information for road users to easily reach their destination. In this paper, Suwon's city hall is set up as the final destination, which is linked from five other cities, Euiwang, Ansan, Hwaseong, Osan and Yongin. The paper attempts to find out whether there is continuity and suitable number of road signs for direction information by analyzing the road signs between these 5 cities and Suwon with respect to direction, direction advance notice and direction guidance. It is found that road users cannot easily find the needed information on their destination from the existing road signs and that continuity of selected place names that systematically appear on road signs is insufficiency. That is to say, the findings of the paper are that while it is easy for road users to find place names that are classified under land marks or the first-class selection of place names on road signs, it is difficult to obtain information from road signs on place names that are grouped under the second or third class. In addition, direction guidance on road signs is problematic, because the appearance frequency of road signs is not adequate and the continuity of road signs is not effective. Moreover, there is insufficient information on local direction guidance for immediate destinations on road signs with respect to turning left or right or going straight. Hence road signs in urban area need systematic improvement to find easily some destination.

This paper describes a recognition method of a road direction for an autonomous vehicle based on magnetic sensors. Using the sensors mounted on a vehicle and the magnetic markers embedded along the center of road, the autonomous vehicle can recognize a road direction and control a steering angle. Using the front lateral deviation of a vehicle and the rear one, the road direction is calculated. The analysis of magnetic field, the acquisition technique of training data, the training method of neural network and the computer simulation are presented. According to the computer simulation, the proposed method is simulated, and its performance is verified. Also, the experimental test is confirmed its reliability.
In this paper, a method of the decision of the road direction for ALV(Autonomous Land Vehicle) road following by region-based segmentation is presented. The decision of the road direction requires extracting road regions from images in real-time to guide the navigation of ALV on the roadway. Two thresholds to discriminate between road and non-road region in the image are easily decided, using knowledge of problem region and polygonal approximation that searches multiple peaks and valleys in histogram of a road image. The most likely road region of the binary image is selected from original image by these steps. The location of a vanishing point to indicate the direction of the road can be obtained applying it to X-Y profile of the binary road region again. It can successfully steer a ALV along a road reliably, even in the presence of fluctuation of illumination condition, bad road surface condition such as hidden boundaries, shadows, road patches, dirt and water stains, and unusual road condition. Pyramid structure also saves time in processing road images and a real-time image processing for achieving navigation of ALV is implemented. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated using several real-world road images.

In this paper, an algorithm is presented to recogniz the driving direction of a vehicle and obstacles in front of it based on highway road image. The algorithm employs a neural network with 27 sub sets obtained from the road image as its input. The outputs include the direction of the vehicle movement and presence or absence of obstacles. The road image, obtained by a video camera, was digitized and processed by a personal computer equipped with an image processing board.
This study was attempted to review the information data for minimizing the destruction of environmental naturalness and the visual damage of landscape from road construction by establishing a model of environmental naturalness for national roads in the suburb areas to suggest an answer to a research question, ' hat does decide the environmental naturalness of roadscape?'. We found that 1) The road-side slope showed no statistical significance in the description of environmental naturalness of roadscape, but the fact that the road-side slope from road construction is the destruction of natural topography cannot be overlooked. 2) In terms of the direction of value variations for independent variables, signboard and telegraph post, soundproofing and protection wall, structure, and building acted toward negative (-) direction, while mountains, sky, road trees, fields, and surrounding green including the road-side slope acted toward positive(+) direction. 3) The variable with highest relative contribution to dependent variables among independent variables is building, which has importance as many as 148 times of road-side slope, while the variable road-side slope has the least importance. Building has the importance of 7.22 times, mountains 5.51 times, road trees 2.59 times, surrounding green 2.54 times, structure 2.41 times, signboard and telegraph post 2.37 times, soundproofing and protection wall 2.20 times, and sky 1.32 times of the fields as a standard criterion values 1.

This paper proposes an efficient method to detect direction indicators on road surfaces to support drivers in driving safely using the Simulink model. In the proposed method, the ROIs are detected using the detection method of maximally stable extremal regions (MSER), and the road indicator regions are detected using the speeded up robust features (SURF) matching method for the corresponding point matching of the detected ROIs and the road indicator templates. Experiments on various road satiations show that the processing time of about 0.32 sec per frame was required, and a detection rate of 91% was achieved.

Road signs are important infrastructures for safe and smooth traffic by providing useful information to drivers. It is necessary to establish road sign DB for managing road signs systematically. To provide such DB, manually detection and recognition from imagery can be done. However, it is time and cost consuming. In this study, we proposed algorithms for automatic recognition of direction information in road sign image. Also we developed algorithm code using OpenCV library, and applied it to road sign image. To automatically detect and recognize direction information, we developed program which is composed of various modules such as image enhancement, image binarization, arrow region extraction, interesting point extraction, and template image matching. As a result, we can confirm the possibility of automatic recognition of direction information in road sign image.

With the advances of the big-data process technology, acquiring the real-time information from the massive image data taken by a mobile device inside a vehicle will be possible in the near future. Among the information that can be found around the vehicle, the route information is needed for safe driving. In this study, the automatic extraction of route information from the road sign imagery was dealt with. The scope of the route information in this study included the route number, route type, and their relationship with the driving direction. For the recognition of the route number, the modified Tesseract OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine was used after extracting the rectangular-road-sign area with the Freeman chain code tracing algorithm. The route types (expressway, highway, rural highway, and municipal road) are recognized using the proposed algorithms, which are acquired from colour space analysis. Those road signs provide information about the route number as well as the roads that may be encountered along the way. In this study, such information was called “OTW (on the way)” or “TTW (to the way)” which between the two should be indicated is determined using direction information. Finally, the route number is matched with the direction information. Experiments are carried out with the road sign imagery taken inside a car. As a result, route numbers, route number type, OTW or TTW are successfully recognized, however some errors occurred in the process of matching TTW number with the direction.
Objective : Today, a study about the meridian is at a standstill because there is no any fundamental study to verify an essence of meridian or to take advantage of meridain. It searched the direction of new meridain study by making out road-map about meridain study to overcome the standstill. Method : It has had a through grasp of the problem of meridian study through analysis of papers for degrees and academy journals of study in connection with meridian published till now. It has made out road-map of Meridian study under a principle establishing road-map because of these problems. Results : The major problems of former studies about meridain are as follows. One is not to have any cooperation with other medical fields. The other is not to have any practical study. It searched the direction of new meridian study by road-map detailed as well as overall to overcome the difficulties. Conclusions : The new direction of meridian study is to build ideal methodical frame and modern meridian model through studying of among school systems. It will interpret newly and modernize traditional meridian theory with being connected with science technology.
