  • The number of tunnels are in fact increasing as a part of linear improvement project of general national highway and road enlargement and pavement project. Recently, collapses of portal slope are also occurring considerably, due to local raining from severe rain storm and abnormal weather. Accordingly, it was risen a necessity to efficiently respond to tunnel portal slope damage and maintenance in Korea and oversea nations. This paper is a basic proposal to execute a survey on the current status and state of the tunnel portal slopes that were already installed and are now being operated along general national highways, and also to execute state evaluation for the purpose of managing those effectively. As a research method, domestic tunnels were analyzed in accordance with geometrical shape such as access type, portal form, and tunnel type, etc. via field survey to analyze the types of tunnel portal slopes along national highways. State evaluation classification sheet is presented to divide classes for the danger state of the surveyed portal slopes, and then the related grades are divided. It is mainly aimed at classifying the tunnel portal slope along national highways with using this state evaluation, to use it as basic data so that continuous maintenance can be executed in the future in accordance with danger classes.

  • Traffic broadcasting is using a usual traffic information announcement when giving its information to users on the road and for the provision of information useful to drivers, a clear criteria of how to judge with information from informers needs to be established from the perspective of users. In this study, to give some available criteria for current announcement which often causes confusion, cognitive characteristics were investigated and analyzed based on judgment criteria which are commonly felt by correspondents, participants in traffic broadcasting and drivers. The result requires the provision of information that is relied on an average speed where drivers feel little cognitive difference and found a classification where a smooth traffic flow is more than 60km/h, going slow 40~60km/h and congested state less than 40km/h respectively. And from the study of 35 traffic information announcement for different traffic situations, 8 cases of smooth state and 9 cases of congested state were clearly classified but the rest 18 cases of comment were ambiguously perceived by drivers and which requires the necessity of a announcement that uses directly the word of 'smooth', 'slow', and 'congestion' in the actual expression of slow driving. The future study should be focused on the establishment of more definite criteria by representation of nearly real traffic flow, provision of traffic information announcement and the analysis of cognitive response through car dynamic simulators and the kinds.

  • This paper describes the incidence of transport accident for the period, 1955-1965. Transport accidents were classified into three categories, viz. railway(WHO Classification of Diseases, E-802), watercraft (E 550-E 858) and motor vehicle accidents(E810-E835, E840-E841, E844-E845). Crude data on the subject were collected from the various souces of Government Statistical Books including Statistical Year Books edited by the Central Office of Economic Planning Board, Annual Police Reports by the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the national and local associations for road traffic safety. From the data incidence and mortality rates by year, month and local province were computed and other variables relevant to the epidemiology of accidents were observed. The following summary could be drawn: 1. Death rates due to transport accidents per 100,000 population were 12.3 for 1955 and 9.7 for 1965. The incidence of injury due to the same cause were 34.0 for 1955 and 35.9 for 1965. 2. Death rates by transportation vehicle showed 9.0 due to motor vehicle accidents, 1.7 due to water-crafts, and 1.6 due to railway trains for 1955. In 1965 death rates were 6.0 due to motor vehicles, 1.2 to water-crafts and 2.4 to railway. 3. Seasonal distribution of transport accidents revealed that car accidents occur more frequently in spring and fall fall seasons while ship accidents do in winter and train accidents more in summer. 4. Both car and ship accidents slightly decreased during the past decade, 1955-1965, whereas the accidents of railway trains showed a tendency of increase. 5. Although the survey on railway accidents excluded the injuries of passengers or railway employees corresponding to WHO classification of diseases, E 801, due to inaccuracy of data, it is roughly estimated that the same number of casualities as the incidence among pedestrians or any other than passengers or employees assumed to be at work(E 802).

  • This thesis aims to study Change of the Land Use in Yanji city since the reformation and opening of China in the Connection with Urbanization Process. This study is based on Landsat image and maps and data related to topography, urban planning basic, the cadastral map were employed. Softwares such as Arcview3.3, ArcGis8.0 were used. The result of the research is as follows. It clearly appears that there have decreased in the ratio of agricultural areas since the increase in other urban usage of land. There has greatly increased in residential, commercial and industrial areas. Such as the capitalist and market economic city the highest point of city land price emerged in downtown of the old city center. In addition spatial pattern of land price is unusually quite different from the western city in its pattern of land price surface declining tendency between the highest land price and the lowest land price. The land price surface shows irregular patterns with increase of distance from downtown due to various urban developments. According to the land price distribution map, it is possible to guess spatial development of the city that the north-eastern part of Yanji was developed prior to south-western area. The center of the city, or downtown expanded to eastward, and the city expanded to south-westward out skirt. Along the main road, Xin-xing areas developed toward east and west ward.

  • Traffic pavement markings are one of primary transportation facilities that provide drivers with various road information directly. Thus, a clear understanding of traffic pavement markings is utmost important to improve traffic safety as well as to establish a proper traffic culture. However, no past studies examined drivers' understanding of traffic pavement markings in Korea. Hence, this study investigated drivers' understanding of traffic pavement markings through an elaborated administrated survey, and analyzed the relationship between various drivers' characteristics and understanding regarding pavement marking via cross-classification table and logistic model. The analysis results show that drivers have limited understanding regarding the purpose of the markings. Specifically, the average understanding of pavement markings is 57.41%: the lowest understanding is 25.88% for yield pavement marking, and the highest understanding is 91.18% for advanced pedestrian crosswalk pavement marking. This study also revealed that the understanding of some pavement markings are somewhat influenced by user group such as drivers with suspended or revoked driver licenses, but the overall understanding of pavement markings are not significantly affected by drivers' characteristics such as gender and driving experiences at ${\alpha}$=0.05. Thus, it might be desirable for policy makers to establish pavement marking-related policies for overall drivers rather than specific drivers.

  • The Hangang river estuary, which is a natural estuary without structures such as estuary barrage, is an ecological pathway connecting the sea and rivers. Accordingly, Hangang river estuary has various species, and there is very valuable. Sediment classification in Hangang river estuary is three-dimensionally and diversely is distributed. Sediment classification in Hangang river estuary is also sensitively changed according to various factors such as climate change and river development. It is typically cause to landform and to develop a compound cross section. In Janghang wetland, the plant success is remarkable according to the morphological change at river bed. The purpose of this study is to identify the mechanism of wetland formation based on the observation on-site. As a result of the observation, Janghang wetland where was artificially created, has been grown according to the river bed change based on the flow rate and the plant success. The viscous surface layer material(fine grains of wash rod properties), which is not the main material(sand) of the river bed, but sub-materials of river bed, jas been settled on the pioneer plants(bolboschoenus planiculmis, etc.). It is an important role in the growth of a compound cross section and a wetland. After the wetland developed to the compound cross section, it is observed that the pioneer plants are transferred to other plant species.

  • After the modern age, the rapid urbanizationhad a big impact on the then architecture. R. Venturi and A. Rossi are two of the leading architects, developing architecture in cities in the US and Europe respectively. This study shed light on a tangible and intangible meaning and interpretation of urban landscapes through their architectural thoughts and architectures. The followings are the physical and intangible meaning and interpretation in architectural thoughts and works of those two architects. Venturi understood that iconological landscapes at the roadside in large citiesare the nature of physical landscapes. To Venturi, the façades of buildings at the roadside are a part of signage such as traffic lights and road signs, and those façades have the meaning of symbolic systems beyond simple physical landscapes. To A. Rossi, types of buildings as physical townscapes are a key role supporting raw data of classification in architecture. And also, those types have significance of the basic data shedding light on the principles and history of cities. For intangible factors in R. Venturi's architecture, daily routine, function and use, time, a use for a building and others form complex architecture. And also, those factors describe shared values of the same period as the façades of buildings and complex symbols and formative lexicons in metaphorical terms. For A. Rossi's intangible factors, 'collective memory' is buried in inhabitants of the city, and with that, the city is a place for memory to its inhabitants. What is more, cities' monuments have intangible landscapes like 'sustainability', 'permanence' and so on. With lots of events happening throughoutcities, those monuments are the whole images of cities giving the value to the urban buildings that reside in cities. Finally, R. Venturi's all-encompassing complex architecture concept was extended on a tangible and intangible point of townscapes. It was found that A. Rossi's tangible thought was formed from the whole landscape of historic cities in then Italy as the background of time and place. Also, With types of urban buildings and 'collective memory', A. Rossi drew architectural norms and formats of unchangeable types.

  • The government is mapping out R&D innovation measures aimed at improving the qualitative level of the performance of national R&D projects that are supported by grants or public funds. This paper proposes ways of making improvements in technology planning, project assessment, performance management, and results evaluation in order to boost the efficiency of the country's promotion of ICT R&D projects, as well as to upgrade the processes involved with its technological innovation system at each of the commercialization stages of its R&D projects. According to our experts' in-depth survey and interview, it has been found that technology planning is the most important phase in the full cycle-based technological innovation system and that the promotion of a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches is the most reasonable. This paper also suggests it is necessary to secure a process for exploring technological opportunities as the preparatory phase for technology planning, and that it is desirable to reflect the technology demand map associated with the technology road map. Currently, R&D projects are divided into policy designation, designation contest, and free contest. To minimize the inefficiency associated with indiscriminate competition, this paper proposes the introduction of a general contest system in order to change the project assessment system into one based on the results of the competition in each category(e.g. firms, universities, research institutions, etc.).

  • The purposes of this study on various headgear at the age of the Persian Achaemenes are to analyze one cultural aspect of the Achaemenes Kingdom that made a great empire about 5th century B.C. and to understand the ancient Persian culture. It is widely recognized that the Persian region was an important place for cultural exchange between the East and the West through the Silk Road and its culture affected China and Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to study ancient culture in this region for further understanding of the Korean culture. However, research activities have not been satisfactorily conducted. This study is an attempt to elevate the interest in this subject. In this study, European archeological materials covering Naqsh-e-Rostam (a tomb of Darius), Apadana stairs, Darius palace in Persepolis, and Bistun(Behistun), the relief at the age of the Achaemenes Kingdom, were collected and analyzed. From this study, the following results were obtained. For crowns at the age of the Achaemenes Kingdom, two kinds of shapes are observed; Mitra, a kind of headband, in the early period and a cylindrical one in the later period. Mitra was also worn by chiefs trusted by the king. Further, slightly different styles of cylindrical crowns were observed, which is considered that kings might wear unique crowns to symbolize new period of their reign. In addition to crowns, various styles of headgear for subjects are observed, meaning that tribes conquered by the Persian empire used their unique headgear. Further, such different styles of headgear might be a tool for social classification. Representative styles of headgear include the semicircular one worn by the Median nobles, Strophion originated from the Elam's headband, and nomadic tribes' Baschlik observed in the Median relics.
