An analytical diffusion model for flood routing with backwater effects and lateral flows is developed. The basic diffusion equation is linearized about an average depth of (H + h), and is solved using the boundary conditons which take into account the effects of backwater and lateral flows. Scouring phenomenon around pier which affects on the support function of pier and the stabilization if river bed is a complex problem depending on flow properties and river bed state as well as pier geometry. therefore, there is no uniting theory at present which would enable the designer to estimate, with confidence, the depth of scour at bridge piers. The various methods used in erosion control are collectively called upstream engineering, HEC-RAS Model, underwater blasting. They consist of reforestation, check-dam construction, planting of burned-over areas, contour plowing and regulation of crop and grazing practices. Also included are measures for proper treatment of high embankments and cuts and stabilization of streambanks by planting or by revetment construction. One phase of reforestation that may be applied near a reservoir is planting of vegetation screens. Such screens, planted on the flats adjacent to the normal stream channel at the head of a reservoir, reduce the velocity of silt-laden storm inflows that inundate these areas. This stilling action causes extensive deposition to occur before the silt reaches the main cavity of the reservoir.
The demarcation of Maritime Boundary is directly related to the expansion of jurisdiction and the securing of resources. Resource diplomacies of the three countries Korea, China and Japan represent a major task for the national administrations : to secure resources as well as to stablize and sustain resources for future national economies. At the sea area around Korea as well, countries are fiercely competing to secure resources and to expand jurisdiction. This is evidenced by the fact that various principles and logics which are beneficial to each own country are presented through international precedents, agreement between countries and the theories of the international law scholars. They say that the conclusion of demarcation of maritime boundary for the Yellow Sea would be easy from the point that there is no dispute related to island dominion in the waters of the Korean Peninsula especially the Yellow Sea, but still we need to have a strategic approach to this issue from the point that the factors used for claiming maritime boundaries may expand the waters of a country over much. For example, the continental shelf boundary in consideration of the distribution of sedimentary deposits in the Yellow Sea which is being raised by China began from the hypothesis that the inflow of sedimentary deposits to the Yellow Sea through the rivers of China represents absolute majority, but the results of the latest studies raised questions on the hypothesis. Especially, the studies done by Martin and Yang revealed that the inflow of sedimentary deposits to the Yellow Sea from the Yellow River is approximately less than 1% of total sedimentary deposits in the Yellow Sea, and also the result of analysis on the causes and counter policy measures on the environment of Bohai, China supports the reliability of the results of such studies. From a legal aspect, the sedimentary deposits of rivers which are claimed by China represent extremely weak ground for the claim for the title of the continental shelf. The siltline claimed by China seems to be based on the Article 76-4-(a)(i) of UNCLOS. This is, however, not the definition on the title of the continental shelf but it is only a technical formula to utilize in a case where a country desires to expand the continental shelf to over 200 nautical miles. Scientific and Technical Guidelines of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf also confirm this point through the Article 2.1.2 of the Guideline. The only case in which sedimentary deposits of rivers were referred to as concrete demarcation of maritime boundary was in the which was concluded in 1986 between India and Myanmar at the Andaman Sea. In the said case, India acknowledged the boundary up to the isobath of 200m which Myanmar claimed based on the sedimentary deposits of the Irrawaddy River. It has limits as a case for acknowledging the sedimentary deposits, however, because in fact India's acknowledgment was made in exchange for the condition that Myanmar gave up the dominion of two islands which they had been claiming from India up until that time.
This study aims to estimate the similarities of lacustrine deposits of lava-dammed Yeoncheon paleo-lake by geochemical analysis such as XRF, ICP-AES, and 14C and OSL age datings in Chugaryeong Rift Valley of Central Korea. OSL age of the lacustrine coastal deposit(YC1) is estimated as 0.11-0.13 Ma. It indicates that paleo-deposits may have remained during at least 20,000 years from 0.13 Ma The origin analysis of deposits were carried out by comparison between lacustrine mud layers($YC1{\sim}2$) and various geomorphic materials of vicinity As a result, the similarity of the origin is highest between the paleo-coastal alluvial deposit of Chatan River(YC8), and surface clay deposit of Jeongok lava plateau(YC9) Next higher similarity is between paleo-lacustrine bottom deposit(YC2) and west valley-side mountain slope colluvial materials(YC5). Another high similarities are among present Chatan River channel sediment(YC7), acustrine coastal deposit(YC1) and east valley-side mountain slope colluvial materials(YC4).

In this study, the hydraulic channel routing model was constructed to analysis the effect of flood control with the operation of Chungju Dam for 2006 flood. Study area was divided with up- and downstream of Chungju Dam in the upper Han River of Paldang Dam. The model was calibrated and verified for the flood event of 1995-2008. The effects of flood control of Chungju Dam were compared with the simulation results without the dam, and the rising effects of stage in the main observation stations were analyzed by the variation of released dam discharge. Consequently, the operation of Chungju Dam for 2006 flood was performed properly, but the effects of flood control of Chungju Dam were so focused in downstream of the dam that institutional complement was demanded to reduce the flood damage in the upper region of the dam. The limit of decision rule of downstream stage in the backwater region of dam was analyzed to solve the problem, and the decision rule of downstream stage was proposed to consider the discontinuity between the backwater region of dam and the design flood of upper stream. The proposed rule will be used to design the reduction of flood damage in upper stream of dam and to apply the analysis of region for flood damage.
The objective of this study is to develop a continuous rainfall-runoff model for flood prediction on a large-scale basin. For this study, the hourly surface runoff estimation method based on the variable retention parameter and runoff curve number is developed. This model is composed that the soil moisture to continuous rainfall can be simulated with applying the hydrologic components to the continuous equation for soil moisture. The runoff can be simulated by linking the hydrologic components with the storage function model continuously. The runoff simulation to large basins can be performed by using channel storage function model. Nakdong river basin is selected as the study area. The model accuracy is evaluated at the 8 measurement sites during flood season in 2006 (calibration period) and 2007~2008 (verification period). The calibrated model simulations are well fitted to the observations. Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiencies in the calibration and verification periods exist in the range of 0.81 to 0.95 and 0.70 to 0.94, respectively. The behavior of soil moisture depending on the rainfall and the annual loadings of simulated hydrologic components are rational. From this results, continuous rainfall-runoff model developed in this study can be used to predict the discharge on large basins.
Water cycle analysis in the Cheonggyecheon watershed(river length: 13.75 km, area: $50.96\;km^2$) was performed using WEP model, a physically based distributed rainfall-runoff model. As the application results of the model, the hydrological characteristics of the Cheonggyecheon watershed are significantly consistent with those of a typical urbanized watershed. The direct runoff from the watershed was larger and the evapotranspiration. was lower, and the response of runoff to rainfall was occurred very fast, as compared to forest watersheds. The river channel routing simulation results are similar to the change pattern and scale of the field data. The possible supply period of instream flow from Cheonggyecheoon watershed itself was estimated using WEP. According to the WEP simulation results for the annual water balance of the Cheonggyecheon watershed in 2002, the amount of direct runoff, infiltration and evapotranspiration were 830 mm, 388 mm and 397 mm respectively for an annual precipitation of 1,388 mm. The runoff to rivers was 1,288 mm. And the proportion of direct runoff, intermediate runoff and groundwater runoff were $67.6\%,\;12.7\%$ and $19.7\%$ respectively.

Development of vegetation in stream channel increases resistance to flow, resulting in increase in river stage upon flood and affecting change in stage-discharge relationship. Vegetation revealed in stream by water level reaching a peak and then declined upon flood is mostly found as prone. Taking an account of flow distribution with the number of vegetation, prone vegetation layer might be at height where discharge rate is zero (0) (Stephan and Guthnecht, 2002). However, there is a tendency that flow rate is overestimated when applying the height of river bed to flow area with no consideration of the height of vegetation layer in flow rate by float measurement. In this study, reliable flow measurement in stream with vegetation was calculated by measuring the height of vegetation layer after flood and excluding the vegetation layer-projected area from the flow area. The result showed the minimum 4.34 % to maximum 10.82 % of flow deviation depending on the scale of discharge. Accordingly, reliable velocity-area methods would be determined if vegetation layer-projected area in stream is considered in flow rate estimation using the flow area during the flood.

This study investigated habitat diversity changes by conducting weir operations at the Sejongbo site in the Geum River basin. High-resolution aerial photographs taken before and after the weir-opening operation were used for habitat analyses. We classified water and bar areas into 17 types, such as lotic habitats, including riffles, runs, and glides, and lentic habitats, including reservoirs, pools, bar-head backwaters, and bar ponds. Then, we estimated each habitat area quantitatively, calculated a habitat diversity index, and established a habitat diversity map. Our results indicated that after the weir-opening operation, lotic habitats and new types of shallow lentic habitats increased in the water area. In addition, for the bar area, bare lands without cultivation increased distinctively. Finally, we observed that the habitat diversity index drastically increased after the weir-opening operation, which could provide a relatively simple channel of diverse habitats.
The flood discharge on the rising limb of a hydrograph at Hwawon station greatly differs from the flood discharge on the falling limb for the same stage. When there is such a big hysteresis, there can be a significant amount of errors in the rated discharge obtained from a simple rating curve. To reduce errors in rated discharges, a looped rating curve was established for Hwawon station in the Nakdong River. In order to compute the deviation between real discharges and simply rated discharges, a simple rating curve was established using the stage and discharge data from the results of a hydraulic channel routing. The relationship between the discharge deviation ${\Delta}Q$ and a product of B and ${\Delta}h/{\Delta}t$ was analysed, where B is the channel topwidth; ${\Delta}h$ is the stage increment; At is the time increment. Strong relation between ${\Delta}Q$ and $B{\Delta}h/{\Delta}t$ was found. The discharges calculated from the relationship show differences by 10 % or less for the 7 observations out of 11 observations in 1997 whose stages exceeds 7 m. The observed discharges for the stages over 9 m in 1998 also show small difference with the discharges estimated from the loop rating curve. Looped rating curve is recommended, instead of the simple rating curve to reduce the errors of rated discharges for gauging stations like Hwawon, which has relatively large loop width.

This study evaluated the runoff data collected at 12 stream gauge stations of the Chungjoo dam basin using the IHACRES model. Especially, the geomorphology-related parameters of the IHACRES model could be quantified base on the regionalization technique, which have also been applied many stream gauge stations of the Chungjoo dam basin. Summarizing the results is as follows. (1) The climate-related parameters of the IHACRES model c, $\tau_w{^0}$, and f are found to be estimated and used uniformly over the basin. (2) The geomorphology-related parameters of the IHACRES model $t_q,\;t_s,\;and\;v_s$ are found to be estimated by considering the geomorphological parameters like the basin area, channel length, channel slope, basin slope through the regionalization based on the regression analysis. (3) Using the climate-related parameters applied uniformly over the basin and the geomorphology-related parameters estimated based on the regionalization procedure for each stream gauge station, a total of 12 stream gauge stations have been evaluated with their stream flow measurements. As results, the Sanganmi and Youngwal 1 stream gauge stations have been found to make high quality flow data, but Youngwal, Baekokpo, and Panwoon stations low quality flow data. On the whole, 12 stream gauge stations considered show large differences with their data quality, so a plan for securing more consistent data quality should be prepared imminently.
