In recent years, riparian buffer system has been known as one of the effective best management practices. However, establishment of riparian buffer system in aspect of plant species and its position in the riparian buffer zone has not been investigated due to lack of efficient evaluation method for the analysis of water quality improvement with established riparian buffer system. To solve this problem, the SWAT-REMM prototype was developed by the researchers in Canada. But, SWAT-REMM model can not consider the $NO_3-N$ load into riparian buffer system through subsurface flow. Thus to solved this problem, Fortran code of SWAT-REMM model was modified. This modified SWAT-REMM system was applied to the Bonggok watershed. Three riparian buffer scenarios, 15 m, 10 m, 5 m width for tree and grass, were made to evaluate the effects of riparian buffer system on water quality improvement. Reduction efficiency of T-N by riparian buffer system of 15 m wide was the greatest (6 ~ 37%, depending on subwatershed characteristics) among 3 scenarios. It indicates that the reduction efficiency of T-N load has increasing-tendency, as buffer width increasing. The results obtained from the analysis showed that wide buffer zones are found to be more effective in reducing non-point pollutant than narrow buffer zones in the riparian buffer zone system. Hence, the SWAT-REMM model could be efficiently used for evaluation and design the most effective riparian buffer systems to reduce pollutant loads to the watershed although many limitations still exist in SWAT-REMM model.

This study suggests the riparian area management measures that can control nonpoint source pollution and optimal carbon sequestration. 30~600 m ranges of riparian buffer width are estimated for controlling diffused pollutants in Nakbon K watershed in the Nakdong River. The area that can be easily restored to the riparian buffer zone considering current land use type is the 1,776.51 ha and it is the 50% of estimated buffer area. About 14,526 tC/yr, 11,826 tC/yr, 8,382 tC/yr and 3,349 tC/yr of carbon can be sequestered in the restoration of riparian buffer zone with broad leaved forest, mixed forest, coniferous forest and perennial grass, respectively. It is equivalent amount of carbon dioxide that emitted from 5,000 cars or 20,000 homes as a family of four.
As a transition zone between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, riparian areas of rivers and streams play significant roles in production and decomposition for river and stream systems. Understanding of the physical and ecological characteristics of riparian areas are, therefore, important for the management of river and stream systems. It is especially important to understand the characteristics of riparian areas for the Nakdong River in Korea which has a large watershed area and diverse land uses. This study aimed at collecting field data, according to stream types, which are essential for the management of riparian areas of the middle and lower reaches of the Nakdong River, Korea. Most riparian areas surveyed in this study had roads within 100 meters from river edges. Distances from water edge to banks were less than 1m for most riparian areas neighboring agricultural lands, indicating that those areas might be very vulnerable to pollutant inputs from non-point sources. Water quality data indicated that soil erosion in the riparian areas could be a major source of phosphorus input to the Nakdong River and land use patters might have a significant influence on nitrogen concentration in the river. Heavy metal concentrations in soils of the riparian areas of the river were below soil quality standards, except arsenic and chromium. Vegetation surveys showed that therophytes were the most frequently occurred riparian plants in the Nakdong River. Number of aquatic plant species increased downstream, with the most diverse aquatic plants observed in wetlands and irrigation canals of the West Nakdong River. Occurrence rate of naturalized plants and urbanization index were high in the survey sites adjacent to urban and agricultural areas.

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in vegetation and flora after five years through field surveys data with the Han Gang Watershed Management Committee (2013) data in order to observe natural vegetation changes in the riparian zone of Han River watershed. As a result, the flora of the riparian zone in 2012 were listed total 231 taxa, 66 families, 158 genus, 207 species, 23 varieties, and 1 forms, and in 2017, a total 247 taxa, 74 families, 174 genus, 218 species, 27 varieties, and 2 forms were identified. The number of rare plants decreased from 4 taxa in 2012 to 2 taxa in total in 2017, and the number of endemic plants increased from 1 taxa to 3 taxa. The number of specific plants by floral region decreased from 21 taxa (9.1% of all 231 taxa of flora) in 2012 to 16 taxa (6.5% of all 247 taxa of flora) in 2017. The total number of naturalized plants is analyzed to increase from 35 taxa, a naturalization rate of 15.15% (all 231 taxa of flora) and urbanization index of 11.2% (all 312 taxa of naturalized plants) in 2012 to 44 taxa a naturalization rate of 17.8% (all 231 taxa of flora) and urbanization index of 14.1%(all 312 taxa of naturalized plants) in 2017. The ecosystem disturbance species showed an increase in both number of species and cover degree grades, indicating that the riparian zone changed in a negative direction.
The structure and dynamics of Korean red pine stands established in the riparian zone were studied in the Tsang stream in Mt. Seorak National Park, in east-central Korea. Pine stands were classified into four successional stages, the initial, establishing, competitive, and stabilizing stages, based on the age distribution of a dominant tree, Pinus densiflora, the vegetation stratification, and the microtopography of the riverine environment. The stages usually corresponded to disturbance frequencies, depending on the horizontal and vertical distances from the watercourse. Stands of the initial and establishing stages lacked tree or subtree layers, or both. As stands progressed through the developmental stages, soil particle size became finer and moisture retention capacity was improved. The stand ordination reflected the developmental stage, and the species ordination differentiated species specializing in relatively dry and wet habitats. The results of the analysis of vegetation dynamics provided ecological information which will be useful for understanding the developmental processes of vegetation established in riparian zones. Species diversity indices usually increased across developmental stages, following the typical pattern for successional processes. We discuss the importance and necessity of riparian vegetation in Korea, where most riparian forests have disappeared due to excessive human land use.

In Korea, where the plain land is greatly deficient as a mountainous nation, most of riparian zones were transformed into agricultural fields and urban areas. Excessive use of the land, which is close to river, makes the rivers enduring severe pollution stresses. Disappearance of riparian buffer, which plays a function of filter in the riverside, appears as a main factor aggravating water pollution of rivers. In this respect, it is imperative to restore the lost riparian vegetation. This study found out restoration models of riparian vegetation from the Bongseonsa stream, which has remnant riparian vegetation patches as a conservation reserve. Feasible reference information applicable for restoration of riparian vegetation was shown in the species level in the order of herb, shrub, and tree and sub-tree zones as far away from the waterway. Those information could contribute to restoring integrate and healthy rivers and streams beyond simple landscaping differently from the other restoration projects when they will be applied to the restoration project to be carried out in the future. In addition, the spatial range of river and stream, background that riparian zone disappeared in Korea, and application plan of the obtained reference information were discussed.

Natural stream work has been implemented recently to improve the urban stream environment in Korean cities. Many plants planted in the early work have not survived because they were not suited to the site and therefore failed to adapt to the riparian environment. The objective of this study is to investigate the floral change at the riparian environment after completion of the natural stream work by comparing the differences between planted species during the work and the current species at the study site. The study site was the stream area between Yeongdohng 2 bridge and Yeongdohng 3 bridge at Yangjae-cheon Stream, Gangnam-ku, Seoul, which was the prototype site of G-7 project of the Ministry of Environment in Korea. The following conclusions were derived after doing this study: Among the 50 species planted during the work, 23 species survived in the stream zone, while 27 species did not. The species that did not survive were ornamental plants that were not appropriate for the riparian environment. Among the 144 species which appeared naturally, 77 species(53.5%) were annuals and perennials, which means the study site is still in ecological disturbance and does not have a stable status ecologically. Thus, it is necessary to select the plant species that can survive in the disturbed riparian environment.
Urban streams are degrading functional role due to development and pollution. This study chose the representative stream of Do-rim and identified flora and fauna. The ecological survey aimed at identifying indicator of urban streams for measuring urban healthiness and we discussed the possibility of wetland conservation area. From the beginning of Dorim stream to An-yang mixture we were successfully identified 113 species of plants, 9 of mammals, 23 of birds, 4 of amphibians, 2 of reptiles and 2 of fish species. Terrestrial insects were 71 species. The wetland vegetation is quite various and we suggested 4 different vegetation zones (aquatic vegetation zone, emergent zone, riparian-meadow zone, riparian-woodland zone) depending on distance from the flowing water stream and vegetation characteristics for urban stream management.
