Rework is a major cause that adversely affects the performance of a construction project, such as schedule delay or cost overrun. In order to prevent rework, research has been mainly conducted to analyze the cause of rework, but limited to quantitatively measure cost of rework and analyze its impact on project performance. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze impact of rework cost using 369 rework items collected from 3 construction site. This research is expected to accurately determine control target of rework and to improve efficiency of business operations in construction project.

Rework in the construction industry can adversely affect project cost and schedule performance. Based on direct rework costs recorded on 359 construction projects, this paper presents an assessment of the magnitude of rework by various types of projects and sources of rework. The results from this paper establish that on average 4.5% and 2.5% of actual construction costs were spent on rework for owner and contractor projects, respectively. Furthermore, this paper determines that the direct rework costs differ by project types and sources of rework. Finally, it permits the development of rework reduction initiatives. By quantifying and recognizing the different magnitude of rework, the industry can be aware of the waste from rework and develop effective plans for managing rework, ultimately improving project cost performance.

As the quality and environmental problems become one of the most concerned issues of company, the rework policy needs to be efficiently designed and implemented to sustain the company's competitiveness. This paper examines three basic rework policies in multi-stage production systems and analyzes them in terms of costs of setup, production, inspection, and inventory. For analyzing the performance of the rework policies, we propose mathematical models which can compute total production cost and determine the optimal production batch size to minimize the total production cost. The rework policies are classified by the number and location of inspection stages. Using the mathematical models, we could analyze the performances of rework policies and suggest the optimal rework policy according to each manufacturing environment. The analyses show that the proposed model can be used to analytically evaluate and choose the rework policies.

The cost modeling of the LCD manufacturing system with the repair and the rework process is hard to achieve because of it's complex manufacturing process. The technical cost modeling divides each process separately and hierarchically, so it is very useful to calculate the total manufacturing cost of the complex manufacturing system. We applied the method to the complex LCD manufacturing system to obtain more accurate cost model. Yields are the most important control parameters in manufacturing. In this paper, we propose a yield based cost model for the LCD manufacturing system and reveal the relationship between manufacturing yield and cost. Through the model, we can estimate the manufacturing cost on the basis of yields that are control indicators of manufacturing. Some simulations are performed to observe the effects of the yield to the cost, and the results are coincide with the real situation. With the proposed model, we expect to develop some optimization problems for enlarging productivity in the LCD industry.
In this paper, we address an optimization problem for minimizing the inspection and rework cost in an inspection-rework system, which forms a network of nodes including a K-stage inspection system, storage areas for items, a source inspection shop, and a re-inspection shop. We assume that (n, 0) acceptance sampling is performed in the source inspection shop and that only 100(1-r)% of items of rejected lots are re-inspected in the re-inspection shop. Since all the nodes are interrelated, in order to formulate our steady-state objective function, we make a steady-state network flow analysis between nodes, and derive both the steady-state amount of flows between nodes and the steady-state fraction defectives by solving a nonlinear balance equation. Finally we provide some fundamental properties and an enumeration procedure for determining the optimal values of (K, r) which both minimizes our objective function and attains a given target average outgoing quality.

This paper presents a computational method that identifies an exact set of optimal overlap rates between critical activities to meet job site specific needs by using rework cost-slope. The procedures to compute the exact solution are provided in peudocode algorithm. The method is coded into Exact Concurrent Construction Scheduling system that allows practitioners to make more informed decision in accordance with the site-specific condition involved in the overlapping of critical activities. Test cases verify the validity of the computational method and the usability of the system.

This paper presents an extended EMQ model which determines an optimal production quantity for a single stage production system when defective items are stochastically produced in the production process and they are re-processed in the rework process to convert them into non-defectives. Through the mathematical modeling, an optimal solution minimizing the average cost per unit time and minimum average cost as well as some properties are derived. It can be shown that each of the existing models is a special case of the proposed model under some conditions. Numerical experiment is carried out to examine the behavior of the proposed model and support properties derived.

This paper presents an extended EMQ model which determines an optimal production run length in an deteriorating production process. The production process is subject to a random deterioration from an in-control state to an out-of-control state and thus producing some proportion of defective items. Defective items produced are re-processed in the rework process to convert them into non-defectives. Through the mathematical modeling, an optimal solution minimizing the average cost per unit time as well as minimum average cost are derived. Numerical experiment is carried out to examine the behavior of the proposed model depending on model parameters.
The high density module (HDM) has advantages for its larger active area and smaller current density. This new way of making a photovoltaic (PV) module method has benefit for increasing module power with the same installed area. Because HDM consisted with serially connected PV strings, loss of strings during the fabrication process can increase the overall production cost.1-2 This study investigates the rework conditions of the shingled strings with electrically conductive adhesives (ECA). By heating the electrically connected area of a fabricated string, cured area become soft and a string can be detached for the rework process. After rework process, a refabricated string showed 5~10% increased output power compared to before rework process and reached to the 90~95% output power compare to the undamaged strings.
An AP plasma technology has been developed for the application of dry cleaner, PR ashing and PI rework in the large glass size. The technology is cost effective, environment friendly, and best fits for coming generation LCD production since the design is easily scalable to bigger size glasses. Surface cleaning results based on the contact angle study has been presented for $5^{th}$ generation LCD bare glass. PR ashing results and various parametric studies have been also presented.
