A thermoelectric module can be used for cooling or power generation. The basic requirements to achieve a significant thermoelectric performance are the same for both generators and coolers. Thermoelectric modules with $Bi_2Te_3$ materials are usually employed in the cooling applications below room temperature but it can also be used for the power generation in the similar temperature range. In the present study, the power generation with a $Bi_2Te_3$ thermoelectric module has been investigated. The temperature difference between the hot and cold sides of the module is maintained with electric heater and cold water from the circulating water bath. The result shows that the electric current generated increases with temperature difference and decreases with the load resistance. However, the voltage increases with both the temperature difference and load resistance. The electric power increases with temperature difference and it has the maximum value when the load resistance is about 4 ${\Omega}$ for a given device.
A 5kW class SOFC cogeneration system consisted of a hot box part, a cold BOP (balance of plant) part, and a hot water reservoir. The hot box part contained a stack, a fuel reformer, a catalytic combustor, and heat exchangers. A cold BOP part was composed of blowers, pumps, a water trap, and system control units. A 5kW stack was designed to integrate 2 sub-modules. In this paper, the 5kW class SOFC system was operated using 2 short stacks connected in parallel to test the sub-module and the system. A short stack had 15 cells with $15{\times}15 cm^2$ area. When a natural gas was used, the total power was about 1.38 kW at 120A. Because the sub-modules were connected in parallel and current was loaded using a DC load, voltages of sub-modules were same and the currents were distributed according to the resistance of sub-modules. The voltage of the first stack was 11.46 V at 61A and the voltage of the second stack was 11.49V at 59A.
Steel pallet racking industry has globally used from the industrial revolution and has deeply evolved from hot-rolled profile into cold-formed profile to raise the optimization in engineering field. Nowadays, some studies regarding cold-formed steel profile have been performed, but fewer studies in terms of cold-formed pallet racking specifically in connection due to the semi-rigid behavior by lug-hooked into the upright have been conducted. The objective of this study is to review the related literature on steel storage racking connection behavior.
Aluminum alloys are widely used in automotive industry because of their high strength-to-density ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. However, conventional cold stamping of aluminum alloys leads to low formability and excessive spring-back. To overcome these problems, Hot Forming Quenching (HFQ) is applied to manufacture automotive part using aluminum alloy. The purpose of this study is to investigate effect of forming temperature on spring-back in HFQ of T6 heat treated AA6061 sheet. In this study, hat shape forming test was adopted to evaluate spring-back characteristics according to various forming temperatures. In additions, the test was also performed with warm forming conditions in comparison with dimensional accuracy of HFQed part. The experimental results showed that dimensional accuracy of HFQed part was superior to warm formed part and amount of spring-back was decreased as forming temperature rise.
As one way to approach to cold defense mechanism in plants, we previously identified the gene for protein-tyrosine phosphatase (CaTPP1) from hot pepper (Capsicum annuum) using cDNA microarray analysis coupled with Northern blot analysis. We showed that the CaTPP1 gene was strongly induced by cold, drought, salt and ABA stresses. The CaTPP1 gene was engineered under control of CaMV 35S promoter for constitutive expression in transgenic tobacco plants by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The resulting CaTPP1 transgenic tobacco plants showed significantly increased cold stress resistance. It also appeared that some of the transgenic tobacco plants showed increased drought tolerance. The CaTPP1 transgenic plants showed no visible phenotypic alteration compared to wild type plants. These results showed the involvement of protein tyrosine phosphatase in tolerance of abiotic stresses including cold and drought stress.
Two types of advanced cold-work tool steels were characterized and compared. A higher-alloyed ledeburitic steel with primary carbides (denoted as 9Cr) and a lower-alloyed steel without primary carbides (5Cr) were fabricated by vacuum induction melting and subsequent hot forging. They were spheroidizing-annealed at $870^{\circ}C$, quenched at $1030^{\circ}C$ and tempered at 180 or $520^{\circ}C$. Their machinability after annealing and hardness, impact toughness, wear resistance after tempering were compared and interpreted in association with their characteristic microstructures. After annealing, 5Cr showed higher resistance to machining due to higher ductility and toughness in spite of lower strength and smaller carbide volume. Owing to smaller carbide volume fraction and the absence of coarse primary carbides, 5Cr showed even better impact toughness although the hardness was lower. The improved toughness of 5Cr resulted in excellent wear resistance, while smaller volume fraction of retained austenite also contributed to it.
To provide an aqueous rust inhibitor for metalworking lubricant having low toxicity and excellent rust resistance, we synthesized diester of malonic acid by three consecutive esterifications with over 98% of conversion. This substituted malonic diester could be used as an additive to mineral oil based metalworking lubricant. These metalworking lubricant compositions were showed excellent rust resistance and suitable for various metals and different metalworking processes including hot rolling and cold rolling of aluminum and aluminum alloys.
A manufacturing process for a clutch gear which demands high strength and wear resistance, was developed by means of computer simulation. A preform was made by hot forging process and subsequent cold sizing process is applied to complete precise tooth part. Processes to obtain high dimensional accuracy and superior mechanical properties are analyzed and optimal heat treatment cycle to improve cold forgeability is introduced. Prototype was produced and the dimensional accuracy of the prototype was inspected to verify proposed process.
Pressure compensating temperature control valve(TCV) is one of the important control devices, which is used to maintain the constant temperature of working fluid in power and chemical plants. The ratio of cylinder hole diameters of inlet and outlet is the main design parameters of TCV. So this needs to be investigated to improve the function of control of temperature and void fraction. In this study, numerical analysis is carried out with various ratios of cylinder hole diameters of the inlet and outlet in the TCV. Especial1y, the distribution of the static pressure Is investigated to calculate the new coefficient($C_{\upsilon}$) and resistance coefficient(K). The governing equations are derived from making using of three-dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and SIMPLE algorithm. Using a commercial code, PHOENICS, pressure and flow fields in TCV are calculated with different inlet and outlet diameters of the cylinder hole for cold and hot water passages.
