  • Background: Some phenolics detected in the soil may inhibit the seed germination and seedling growth of ginseng (Panax ginseng). This study investigated the effect of irrigation and ginseng root residue addition on the soil microbial community and root rot disease in 2-year-old ginseng. Methods and Results: Each $20{\ell}$ pot was filled with soil infected with ginseng root rot pathogens, and irrigated daily with $2{\ell}$ of water for one month. After the irrigation treatment, ginseng fine root powder was mixed with the irrigated soil at a rate of 20 g per pot. In descending order, ${NO_3}^-$, electric conductivity (EC), exchangeable Na (Ex. Na) and K (Ex. K) decreased due to irrigation. In descending order, ${NO_3}^-$, EC, Ex. K, and available $P_2O_5$ increased with the additon of ginseng powder to the soil. The abundance of Trichoderma crassum decreased with irrigation, but increased again with the incorporation of ginseng powder. The abundance of Haematonectria haematococca increased with irrigation, but decreased with the incorporation of ginseng powder. The abundance of Cylindrocarpon spp. and Fusarium spp., which cause ginseng root rot, increased with the incorporation of ginseng powder. The abundance of Arthrobacter oryzae and Streptomyces lavendulae increased with irrigation. The abundance of Streptomyces lavendulae decreased, and that of Arthrobacter spp. increased, with the incorporation of ginseng powder. Aerial growth of ginseng was promoted by irrigation, and ginseng root rot increased with the incorporation of ginseng powder. Conclusions: Ginseng root residues in the soil affected soil nutrients and microorganisms, and promoted ginseng root rot, but did not affect the aerial growth of ginseng.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to monitor the residue of pesticides and to assess their risk in domestic agricultural products, such as fruit vegetables, tomatoes, oriental melons and root vegetables, garlic, potatoes and onions. METHODS AND RESULTS: 250 samples containing both general and environment-friendly certified agricultural products were collected from traditional markets and supermarkets in 6 cities. 132 pesticides except for herbicides were analysed using the multi-residue methods by GC/ECD, GC/NPD and HPLC/UVD. 17 kinds of pesticides were detected from 42 samples, which were 32 general, 1 organic, 4 pesticide-free and 5 low pesticide agricultural products. Among those, myclobutanil detected in 1 potato and procymidone detected in 10 oriental melons were unregistered pesticides for using in Korea. Fenbuconazole detected in 1 potato and phorate detected in 1 tomato were exceeded over the MRLs established by Korea Food and Drug Administration. CONCLUSION: Based on these results, a risk assesment was conducted using a percentage of acceptable daily intake(%ADI). %ADI ranged from 0.0064% to 4.6035%, and showed these values have no effect on human health.

  • This study was undertaken in order to elucidate the elimination of phenthoate residues by washing and cooking processes of rice which if the most important food crop in Korea. When contaminated rice was washed with distilled water three times, the removal rate of total phenthoate was 51%. The removal rate in the successive washings was 37.3% (wash filtrate 7.8%, wash sediment 29.5%) in the first, 14.3% (wash filtrate 6.2%, wash sediment 8.1%) in the second and 8.9% (wash filtrate 5.8%, wash sediment 3.1%) in the third washings. More than half of the residue was removed by the first washing and most residues were found in the sediment rather than in the filtrate of the rice washings. The residue rate of phenthoate after cooking by an electric rice cooker was 41%, indicating that the removal rate after cooking was 59%, because phenthoate is thermally stable at the cooking temperature. In conclusion, phenthoate residues contaminated in rice grains are grcatly removed in the washing process and it is desirable to wash the grains before cooking in order to decrease the hazards from pesticide residues such as phenthoate. Reduction factor of phenthoate in rice cooking is proposed to be 0.4.

  • In this study, optimum extraction conditions for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ash(SSA) were investigated. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted to determine optimal recovery conditions for Ca-P type phosphorus by using calcium component in the recycled aggregate residue. The phosphorus content of sewage sludge ash was confirmed to be 5.0 %. When $H_2SO_4$ was used as an extract, concentration of 1 N $H_2SO_4$, L/S ratio of 10, and extraction time of 30 min were found to be the optimal extraction conditions. Phosphorus was extracted by using optimal extraction conditions, and then the heavy metals eluted with phosphorus were removed using 1~20 g of cation exchange resin. In 20 g of cation exchange resin, Fe 71.3%, Cu 82.4%, Zn 79.9%, and Cr 15% were removed. After that, the mixing ratio of the calcium extract obtained from the recycled aggregate residue (RAR) was changed to 1:1, 1:5, 1:10. The pH of the SSA to RAR mixture was adjusted to 2, 4, 8 and 12 by the addition of 5 N NaOH to the mixture of 1:5, and the phosphorus was recovered as Ca-P type precipitate. The optimum pH was 8. When recycled aggregate residues were used, the weight of calcium phosphate increased, but the amount of wastewater generated also increased. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of recycled aggregate residue was not economically feasible.

  • Avermectin B1(abamectin) is an very effective acaricide/insecticide. Because it is applied at low rates, the resultant residue level would be quite low and this requires highly sensitive analytical method. In this study, three analytical methods for avermectin $B1_a$, were compared in view of detectability and sensitivity. The first analytical method was an HPLC method employing the fluorescence detection of avermectin. The second analytical technique to quantitate avermectin $B1_a$, and its photodegradative delta 8,9-isomer employed trifluoroacetic anhydride and 1-methylimidazole in DMF. The new method was the modification of trifluorescence method. The average recoveries of avermectin $B1_a$ for the concentration range from 1 and 10 ng/g in whole apple fruit by fluorescence method were 90.3% and 88.2% respectively. In trifluorescence method, the recoveries of the avermectin $B1_a$ and delta 8,9-isomer were 100.7% and 94.7% in concentration from 5 ng/g and 25 ng/g. The average recoveries of 5 ng and 25 ng/g in the newly modified method were 95.0, 99.0. 96.0, 92.8% in whole apple and soil respectively.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of sikhe prepared using various concentrations of hot water extracts roasted coffee ground residue (CR-sikhe; 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0%). The pH increased with increasing CR concentration. The reducing sugar content after 5 h saccharification was the highest when 0.8% CR extract was used. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents increased in a concentration-dependent manner reaching maximum levels when 1.0% CR-extract was used. The antioxidant activities of CR-extracts were higher than that of the control and increased dose-dependently. The CR-0.6 showed the best taste (4.28), color (4.56), flavor (4.08), and overall acceptability (4.28). After 10 day of storage at $4^{\circ}C$, the total cell count in CR-sikhe was approximately 1-2 log cycle, which was less than that in the control.

  • BACKGROUND: It is important to understand residual patterns of pesticides applied on crops for ensuring their safety in agricultural products. However, there are few studies on the residual patterns of pesticides in minor crops, which are small in cultivation area. In this study, residual amounts of bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr sprayed on perilla leaf as a minor crop were investigated to know their residual patterns. METHODS AND RESULTS: Bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr were sprayed 2 or 3 times on perilla leaves at a week interval prior to harvest, and the perilla leaves were collected at 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 days after the final application of pesticides. Recoveries for residual analysis of pesticides spiked on perilla leaves with concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg were 81.9-104.8%. The residual amounts of pesticides interpreted using first order kinetics model show that dissipation constants of bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr in perilla leaves were 0.0724-0.0535 and $0.0948-0.0821day^{-1}$, respectively. In addition, the dissipation half-lives in perilla leaves were 9.6-12.9 days for bifenthrin and 7.3-8.4 days for chlorfenapyr. When pre-harvest residue limits (PHRL) of bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr at 10 days before harvest calculated on the basis of the dissipation constants and maximum residue limits of the pesticides were calculated as 17.1 for bifenthrin and 15.9 mg/kg for chlorfenapyr. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the PHRL calculated using the time-dependant residual patterns of pesticides in perilla leaves and their regression analysis may be used as experimental evidences in order to ensure the safety of pesticides in perilla leaves before harvest.

  • As topographic characteristics of Korea where 64 % of the national land area is forest and only 17 % is being used as farmland, remediation of farmland contaminated by heavy metals is a considerably important issue. In this study, as an alternative of practically and effectively remediating farmland which was abandoned as its crop plants exceeded maximum residue limit of heavy metals due to mining impact, applicability of stabilization method was examined through the pilot-scale field experiment. Three plots ($L{\times}W{\times}D=3m{\times}2m{\times}0.3m$) were installed at the selected farmland and in plot 1, only soil of the selected farmland was applied, in pilot 2, soil of the selected farmland plus 3 % limestone (w/w) was applied and in pilot 3, soil of the selected farmland plus 3 % limestone was applied and then uncontaminated soil was covered thereon (0.3 m). After that, seeds of radish, Korean cabbage and soybean of which characteristics of edible portions are different were sowed on each plot and cultivated. Afterwards, at a proper harvesting time (app. 80 days later), crop plants and soil were collected and phytoavailability (0.11 M HOAc extractable) of heavy metals in soil and accumulated concentration of heavy metal in edible portion of crop plants were examined. As a result, it was revealed that phytoavailability of heavy metals in soil added with limestone (plot 2) was clearly reduced compared with plot 1 (untreated) and owing to this treatment, accumulated concentration of heavy metals in edible portion of crops was also clearly reduced compared with plot 1. While radish cultivated in plot 1 had exceeded maximum residue limit of agricultural products, in particular, plot 2 using limestone had shown concentration lower than maximum residue limit and this plot had shown little difference with 3 plot where crop was cultivated in uncontaminated soil cover. Therefore, it was considered that for abandoned farmland like the selected farmland, reducing mobility and phytoavailability of heavy metals and reducing crop uptake through stabilization method would be an effective and practical alternative for producing safe agricultural products on a sustained basis.
