The solvent extraction and clean up processes for the gas chromatographic determination of muarimol pesticide residues in apples were investigated and examined the changes of residual concentration with the passage of time. The extracted pesticide with methanol were partitioned with dichloromethane after adding sodium chloride solution. The separated solutions were concentrated and transfered to the alumina column for clean up, and eluated with 1-chlorobutane : methanol solution. As a results their recovering for 0.200 and 1.00ppm muarimol spiked on apples have shown 79~95%. Residual amounts of nuarimol in apple was 0.0830ppm when the fungicide was treated eight times until 3 days before its harvest. It seems to be safely used when nuarimol is treated six times until 7 days before harvest of apple.
Biological evaluation of residual malathion after 168 hrs of single dipping exposure of White Leghorn hens to different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) of pesticides was investigated. Thirty-two male albino rats divided into four groups of eight each were kept on 20% isoproteinous diet prepared from the meat of these malathion dipped hens. After 30 days feeding trial, the rats were killed by decapitation. No significant change was found in erythrocytes. However, the triglyceride concentration in brain tissue was increased significantly (p<0.05) when dose level of pesticide was 1% in dipping solution. Similarly, malathion exposed poultry meat failed in altering any significant change in the pancreatic amylase and lipase activities of rats. This study concludes the virtual absence of toxic accumulation of pesticide in the meat of birds after 168 hrs of exposure in usual concentration range upto 1.5%.

Objectives : This study was investigated to determine the contents of pesticide residues and sulfur dioxide residues in commercial herbal medicines in Korea. Methods : Chromatographic test was performed on 100 samples consisted with 10 kinds of medicinal plants including improted and domestic products. To establish 19 pesticide residues (DDE, DDD, DDT, Dieldrin, Methoxychlor, BHC isomers, Aldrin, Endosulfan isomers, Endrin, Captan, Procymidone, Chlorpyrifos and Imidacloprid) in commercial herbal medicines, chromatographic equipments were used with the gas chromatography-mass detector and gas chromatography-electron capture detector for qualitative analysis. The imidacloprid analysis was performed by high performance liquid chromatograpgy-ultraviolet detector at 270 nm UV wavelength. The contents of sulfur dioxides were analyzed by modified Monnier-Williams method. All methods were based on notification procedure of Korea Food & Drug Administration (KFDA). Results : The residual pesticides were not founded in improted and domestic samples. Among 100 samples, the residues of sulfur dioxide in 73 samples were not detected and 25 samples showed contents in the range of 0~21.90 mg/kg. The excess samples of MRLs were 2 samples (30 mg/kg to medicinal herbs), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (Imported product) and the average amount of sulfur dioxide in 2 unsuitable samples were 14.83 mg/kg. These samples were found to transgress KFDA regulatory guidance of residual sulfur dioxide. Conclusion : These results are able to use as basic data to improve the reliability and value of commercial medicinal herbs.
The applicability of Brussels sprouts, which are widely cultivated in Jeju, as a functional biomaterial in the cosmetics and food industries is investigated. The active ingredients (total phenols and flavonoids, β-carotene, vitamin C, free sugar, minerals, glucosinolates, and isothiocyanates) and antioxidant activities of 70% ethanol extracts of Brussels sprouts and cabbage were analyzed. The total phenol, flavonoid, vitamin C, and β-carotene contents of Brussels sprouts were approximately 36%, 2.5 times, 2.3 times, and 65% higher than those of cabbage, respectively. The total free sugar content of Brussels sprouts was 58%-72% lower than that of cabbage. The K content was the highest among the other minerals, and there was little difference between the two samples. The Na content was approximately three times higher in cabbage than in Brussels sprouts. The total glucosinolate content of Brussels sprouts was 34.5 mol SE/g DW, twice that of cabbage. The sinigrin content of Brussels sprouts was thrice (10.06 μmol/g DW) that of cabbage. The isothiocyanate (sulforaphane, I3C) content in Brussels sprouts was double that of cabbage. The antioxidant activity of Brussels sprout extract was 2.5 to 2.8 times higher in 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity and 3.3 to 3.6 times higher in 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethybenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging capacity than those of cabbage extract. These are important basic data for the study of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which have anticancer activity, as well as antioxidant-related substances of Brussels sprout, which has high potential for use as a biomaterial in functional foods and cosmetics.
Photosensitizing activities of some photosensitizers (PS) for the artificial diminution of pesticide residues on horticultural crops were investigated. Five fungicides, iprodione, bitertanol, chlorothalonil, myclobutanil, and dichlofluanid were sprayed on apple and cucumber, followed by the application of each selected photosensitizer, and the samples were collected 0, 1, 3, 7, 15 days after the photosensitizer application and analyzed for the residual amounts. Of the 40 photosensitizers tested, six selected on the basis of the eliminating effect of pesticide residues were PS-1 (aromatic ketone), PS-2 (aromatic amine), PS-3 (quinone), PS-4 (inorganic compound), PS-5 (organic acid salt), and PS-6 (semiconductor photocatalyst). The residual amount of iprodione after 15 days of the application of PS-1 was 74% of that of the control. For bitertanol, the residual amount after 15 days of the application of PS-1 accounted for 78% of that of the control. The residual amounts of chlorothalonil after 1 day of the application of PS-1 and PS-2 accounted for 56 and 54% of those of the control, respectively. The residual amounts of iprodione on cucumber after 3 days of the application of the photosensitizers PS-1 and PS-2 were 44 and 67% of those of the untreated control, respectively. For myclobutanil, the residual amount after 15 days of the application of PS-6 accounted for 45% of that of the control. In case of dichlofluanid, the residual amount after 3 days of the application of PS-1 accounted for 44% of that of the control. Based on the results, PS-1 turned out to be the most promising photosensitizer for the accelerated photodegradation of the above fungicides on apple and cucumber.
Under the "Positive List System (PLS)," a uniform limit of 0.01 mg/kg is applied if the agricultural product does not have a Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) for a pesticide. The purpose of this research is to conduct residual pesticide monitoring on tropical fruits distributed in Gyeonggi-do to investigate the effects of PLS and provide basic materials for establishing MRLs of residual pesticides for tropical fruits produced in Korea. By inspecting 120 tropical fruits distributed in Gyeonggi-do according to Multi-class pesticide multi-residue methods, we detected sevenfruits from threekinds of banana, mangoes, and kiwis with six different residual pesticides. Azoxystrobin and chlorpyrifos were detected from bananas, chlorfenapyr from mangoes, and chlorothalonil, iprodione, and procymidone from kiwis. A single case of chlorfenapyr and chlorothalonil was found with a mango and a kiwi produced in Korea, respectively, and by applying PLS we found that they exceeded the MRL of residual pesticide. Thus, it is necessary to set the MRL of residual pesticides for tropical fruits produced in Korea.

According to a survey conducted recently, consumers are feeling the anxiety to food, it can be seen that the extent to which feels uneasy about pesticide residues among them in particular is high. Foods that are commercially available, is set (pesticide residue standards, acceptable daily intake daily (ADI), non-toxic amount) residual acceptable standards of pesticides so as not to give the damage to human health. However, in the case of consumers of general knowledge on Standards for pesticide residues is not sufficient, anxiety over food safety still exists. Therefore, in this study, as can be easily understood and accurate information to consumers a general basic knowledge on the safety of food is insufficient is related to food safety, was utilizing the graphic display of a one-dimensional you are trying to provide information providing method. As a result, in the display method is utilized to provide the information on food existing for, from the form of the information by utilizing the graphs and characters, using a graphical display showing the criteria for pesticide residues in one dimension it was found that the display shows how to readily appreciate the most accurate and safety standards regarding pesticide residues.
This study was conducted to investigate the changes of the residual amount in the leafstalk (end) and the fore-end (upper) portion of lettuce leaves during cultivation period to 14 days, 12 times in total (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13 and 14 days) after spraying with boscalid and lufenuron. In the case of boscalid, the initial concentrations at 3 hours (0 day) of the leafstalk and the fore-end portion of lettuce leaves were 18.26 mg/kg and 84.97 mg/kg, respectively and the residual amounts were rapidly decreased to 0.31 mg/kg and 0.37 mg/kg at 14 days after chemical application. In the case of lufenuron, the initial concentrations at 3 hours (0 day) of the leafstalk and the fore-end portion of lettuce leaves were 0.91 mg/kg and 5.21 mg/kg, respectively and the residual amounts were rapidly decreased to 0.06 mg/kg and 0.09 mg/kg at 13 days after chemical application. The variations of the residual concentrations analyzing 12 times after spraying showed that the residual amounts of the leafstalk portion of lettuce leaves were less than its fore-end portion in boscalid and lufenuron. In additon, 9 kinds of pesticide including boscalid in 16 lettuce leaf (found to contain pesticide in 2013) showed that the residual amounts of the leafstalk portion of lettuce leaves were less than its fore-end portion as well.
This study was implemented to evaluate food safety on residual pesticides in agricultural products of Korea and to use as a data base for the establishment of food policy. A total of 196 pesticide upon these products were analyzed using multi class pesticide multiresidue methods of Korean Food Code, and 232 samples of 15 agricultural products collected from 9 regions were supplied for this study. In the results, 64 kinds of pesticides were detected in 53 samples, chlorpyrifos and procymidone of them were shown a high frequency of detection in the analyzed pesticides. Among them, two samples (chlorpyrifos in perilla leaves and picoxystrobin in peach) were detected over Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). The levels of the detected pesticide residues were within safe levels. Also, the intake assessment for pesticide residues including chlorpyrifos at multi pesticide residue monitoring were carried out. The result showed that the ratio of EDI (estimated daily intake) to ADI (acceptable daily intake) was 0.001~0.902% which means that the detected pesticide residues were in a safe range so that residual pesticides in the agricultural products in Korea are properly controlled.
This study was carried out to examine residual pesticides in dried agricultural products collected from Gyeonggi province in 2010. A total of 102 samples was collected and analyzed for 206 pesticides by multiresidue method using GC-${\mu}ECD$, GC-NPD, GC/TOF/MSD, HPLC-UVD, HPLC-FLD and HPLC/MS/MS. The detection rate of residual pesticides was 23.5% (24 of 102 samples) and the agricultural products exceeding their MRLs (Maximum Residue Limits) were 1 sample of pepper leaves. Additionally, the frequently detected pesticide were chlorothalonil, fenvalerate, chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, bifenthrin, cypermethrin, hexaconazole and iprodione. The pesticide types detected in the dried agricultural products showed in the descending order of organophosphorus (22%), pyrethroid (22%), organochloride (17%), dicarboxymide (11%), carboxymide (6%), carbamate (6%), triazole (5%) and the others (11%).
