  • Recently, many strengthening methods are developed to repair damaged structures, especially, steel plate or carbon fiber sheet bonding methods are widely used. For the bonding methods, the strengthening materials are bonded when the original structure is under loading, with causes the difference of initial stresses between original member and bonded material. However, current design method or theory, which mostly depends on ultimately strength design, cannot account the difference of initial stresses between members, and it disregards the reduction of nominal strength. In this study, a new strengthening design theory and program which can account the difference of initial stresses are developed, and applied to the case when a structure in service is repaired. In order to verify the validity of the theory and the program, a test result is referred and compare with the results and it is showed that the calculated values are almost same as the referred data and finally proved that the program is reliable. The results showed that the amount of strengthening material depends on the status of damages of structure, and the nominal strength is reduced depending on the degree of damages.

  • HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) is an underwater cable between Jeju Island and Haenam in main land and supplies approximately 50% of electrical usage in Jeju Island. If there is any power failure due to HVDC, it will cost approximately 50,000 US dollars per day including Thermal Electrical Generation. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to recover the problem in rapid timely basis. In conclusion, evaluation methode of HVDC cable is needed urgently to upgrade current HVDC underwater cable repair technique in Korea to minimize the cost and time factors.

  • In this work, the effect of the correction fibers direction on the efficiency of repairing damaged composite plates was highlighted. The composite plates studied in this work consist of eight layers of graphite/epoxy, while the patch used in this repair consists of four layers of the same type. The results obtained in this work, whether with regard to the experimental or analytical side, showed that the fibers orientation affects the repair efficiency, so the closer the angle of fibers inclination is to the tensile strength direction, the performance of the composite material is ideal. Hence, we conclude that the composite materials with longitudinal fibers (Parallel to tensile strength) is the most powerful and efficient material in performance.

  • The work of constructing apartment housing involves various fields of industry that are linked to each other, and is based on a design document prepared by multiple technicians and architects. Consequently, design errors, material flaws or faulty construction works can cause defects, which sometimes overlap with each other. Construction companies should repair any defects found in a completed building within a specified period of time, and to do this, should establish a business plan by efficiently predicting the cost of defect repair. As it is very difficult for companies to accurately predict the occurrence of defects, historical performance data is used as a base. For domestic apartment housing units, data on the cost of defect repair is insufficient, so there are hardly any methods that can be used to make precise predictions. Therefore, the intent of this study is to develop a model that can predict the cost of defect repair by supply type and area, based on historical performance data with ten years worth of post-completion.

  • Background The management of flexor tendon injuries has evolved in recent years through industrial improvements in suture materials, refinements of repair methods, and early rehabilitation protocols. However, there is no consensus on the ideal suture material and technique. This study was conducted to compare the tensile strength, repair time, and characteristics of 4-strand cruciate, modified Kessler, and 4-strand horizontal intrafiber barbed sutures for flexor tenorrhaphy with a 12-mm suture purchase length in an animal model. Methods The right third deep flexors of 60 adult Leghorn chicken feet were isolated and repaired with a 12-mm suture purchase length. The tendons were randomly assigned to three groups of equal number (n=20 each). Groups 1 and 2 received 4-strand cruciate and modified Kessler repair with conventional suture materials, respectively. A 4-strand horizontal intrafiber barbed suture technique was used in group 3. The repaired tendons were biomechanically tested for tensile strength, 2-mm gap resistance, and mode of failure. Repair times were also recorded. Results The maximum tensile strength until failure was $44.6{\pm}4.3N$ in group 1, $35.7{\pm}5.2N$ in group 2, and $56.7{\pm}17.3N$ in group 3. The barbed sutures were superior to the other sutures in terms of the load needed for 2-mm gap formation (P<0.05). Furthermore, the barbed sutures showed the shortest repair time (P<0.05). Conclusions This study found that 4-strand horizontal intrafiber barbed suture repair with a 12-mm purchase length in a chicken flexor tendon injury model showed promising biomechanical properties and took less time to perform than other options.

  • Recently the growth of the renewable energy production has caused the flexible operation in LNG combined cycle power plant. Due to the rapid start and stop operations, large CrMoV castings used for turbine casings and valve bodies could be distorted and lead to replacement or welding repair. This study was performed to find out the characteristics of the repair welding for a damaged CrMoV casting steel. A typical field repair method (arc & TIG welding) was applied to making specimens. The degraded N2 packing head sample from the steam turbine was used. The evaluations of weldments were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, tensile, creep-rupture and fatigue tests. Color etching was also applied for better understanding of welding microstructures. As the boundary between HAZ and base material was deteriorated by welding, it caused microstructural changes formed during PWHT and the shortening of the remaining residual life. By comparing the properties according to repair welding method, it was possible to derive what important welding factors were. As a result, arc welding method is more suitable for repair welding on CrMoV castings.

  • Structures in our surroundings deteriorate over time due to environmental and chemical factors, resulting in a decrease in their performance. The primary causes of degradation in concrete structures are carbonation, salt damage, and freeze-thaw cycles. Various maintenance methods exist to address these degradation issues. However, research and technological development for existing maintenance methods have been ongoing, but the accuracy and effectiveness of repair materials and techniques have not been extensively validated. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a material performance evaluation of various manufacturers' repair materials. Based on this evaluation, we applied corrosion inhibitors and epoxy, which are the methods most closely related to crack repair, to assess the durability performance against carbonation, salt damage, and freeze-thaw cycles. The results show approximately a two-fold performance improvement against carbonation and salt damage, and a 5% enhancement in repair performance against freeze-thaw cycles. Thus, it is considered effective in preventing rebar corrosion when appropriate maintenance is carried out according to environmental and chemical factors during structural repairs.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of delayed time, surface treatment, and repair materials on repair of bis-acryl composite resin through comparison of shear bond strength and to evaluate the utility of bis-acryl composite resin repair using polymethyl methacrylate resin. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 bis-acryl composite resin specimens were fabricated and classified into 9 test groups, each of 10 pieces according to delayed time, surface treatment and repair material. The shear bond strength of each specimen was measured using a universal testing machine immediately after fabrication and analyzed using a statistical analysis program (IBM SPSS statistics 20). After the shear bond strength measurement, the fracture surface of the specimen was observed. Results: The highest shear bond strength ($17.54{\pm}3.14MPa$) was observed in the experimental group bonded immediately with a light-curing flowable composite resin using a bonding agent. Conclusion: When repairing bis-acryl composite resin, it is necessary to consider whether to remake according to the delayed time. For effective repair, it is desirable to consider appropriate materials and surface treatment methods according to the site or purpose of use.
