  • This study contains the photocatalytic degradation of methyl-tert-butyl ether(MTBE), one of water-contaminating substances, into $CO_2$. Herein was investigated factors, kinetics, and reaction pathways related with MTBE degradation. This works is possible to be applied in the field of environmental remediation such as undergroundwater purification with optimized system configuration in the near future.

  • Recently, we have recognized that ‘Soil Environmental Prevention Act’could not provide perfect solutions on many complicated problems which are now emerging and/or can be solved by adopting comprehensive policies. In this study, some suggestions were made to solve a few tangled problems such as conducting the Land Partnership Plan(LPP) project, investigating soil and ground water contamination of the industrial area, building a integrated information system for soil and ground water, establishing detailed guidelines for remediation and verification, and re-constructing the legal and institutional framework for integrated management of soil and ground water. These suggestions may help policy makers to build conceptual frameworks for solving these problems.

  • A new approach for groundwater treatment combines a permeable Fe(0) barrier to breakdown higher chlorinated solvents like PCE and TCE with a downgradient aerobic biological treatment system to biotransform less chlorinated solvents, such as DCE and vinyl chloride (VC). The expected bacterial performance downgradient of an Fe(0) barrier was evaluated through laboratory batch experiments with a toluene-degrading mixed culture that cometabolically transforms cis-1,2-DCE and VC. The amount of cis-1,2-DCE (initially at 2,000 ppb) and VC (initially at 2,000 ppb) transformed was controlled by the initial toluene (20,000 ppb) concentration. VC was removed much more effectively than Cis-1,2-DCE, and a higher toluene concentration in comparison to the co-substrate concentrations was needed for complete co-substrate removal. Overall, the coupling of an Fe(0) barrier and subsequent biodegradation appears feasible for remediation of complex mixtures of chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater

  • A field pilot study on remediation of diesel-contaminated soil by hot air injection/extraction process constructing soil piling system was conducted to evaluate the effects of hot air on the removal of diesel and each constituent. After the heating process of 2 months, the equilibrium temperature of soil reached to 10$0^{\circ}C$ and soil TPH concentration was reduced to about 72% against the initial concentration. Additional extraction process of 2 months induced the continuous extraction of residual diesel and the increment of microbial activity, which made soil TPH concentration reduced to 95%. In addition biological removal of non volatile constituents in diesel was verified indirectly and the removal pattern of each DRO(diesel range organic) as soil temperature was explained.

  • When an electrokinetic process is applied to a HOC-contaminated soil, hybrid types combined with soil flushing, chemical oxidation, and bioremediation are generally used. Especially when the electrokinetic process is combined with bioremediation, the hybrid technology can solve several limits of bioremediation such as low microbial mobility, low soil temperature, and shortage of nutrients in subsurface circumstance. Because microbial surface is charged negatively, the microorganism moves from cathode to anode under electrical field. In this study, mixed culture mainly-consisted by Pseudomonas sp. was applied to remediate pentadecane-contaminated kaolinite with particle size less than 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This remediation system was named ‘electrokinetic bioaugmentation’ and consisted of model aquifer, electrode reservoirs, bioreactor, power supply, and pump. The mixed culture above 0.5 of optical density in bioreactor was supplied to two reservoirs and penetrated soil when the electric current was applied. To enhance the removal efficiency, the optimal medium composition, electric current, and voltage were investigated.

  • The lignin-degrading fungus Trichophyton sp. LKY-7 was immobilized in ca-alginate beads for laccase production and PCP remediation. The immobilized Trichopphyton sp. LKY-7 enabled the repeated use of this fungus for laccase production and produced high amount of laccase throughout 5 cycles incubation. As a laccase inducer oak wood meal(Quercus variabilis) seemed to be effective laccase inducer for Trichophyton sp. LKY-7, and the optimum addition amount was 1%(W/W) in glucose-peptone medium. Biotransformation of pentachlorophenol by immobilized Trichophyton sp. LKY-7 reached an efficency of up to 90% without toxic inhibition. Immobilized Trichophyton sp. LKY-7 might thus be applicable for semicontinuous laccase production and bioremediation to serve inoculum for reactor system.

  • This study investigated the purification process of groundwater contaminated with zinc and arsenic using a permeable reactive barrier with a zero-valent iron/pumice mixture. We determined the removal rates of the contaminants for 30 days. In this study, column reactor filled with the zero-valent iron/pumice reactive mixture was used. Experimental results showed that the mixture exhibited an almost complete removal of the zinc and arsenic ions. Arsenic was removed via co-precipitation and adsorption processes while zinc ions were asorbed in active sites. The purification process of water from the metal ionscontinued for 30 days with constant hydraulic conductivity because of the enhanced porosity of the pumice and interparticle distance between the zero-valent iron and pumice. Contaminants removal rates and the remediation mechanism for each reactive system are described in this paper.

  • Plant species have shown the capability to absorb U into the biomass. Norman(l952) even suggested that uranyl ion acts as an accessory microelement in growth of Lemna and flax roots. The plants, termed metal hyperaccumulators, can extract and accumulate more than 1000-10,000mg heavy metal per kilogram of dry weight of plants (0.1-1%). The most vital main factors influencing the ability and efficiency of phytoremediation is the ability of the plant to uptake the metals from soil before the accumulation mechanism happens in the plant tissue. • During earthquakes, the performance of structures needs to be evaluated, which provides guidance for selecting suitable retrofitting schemes. The purpose of this paper is to accomplish seismic assessment of a simple steel residential building. Once the responses of the system are determined, the scope of the study extends to evaluate selected retrofitting strategies that are intended to rehabilitate the flaws of the structure under prescribed ground motions with high probability of occurrence at the site. After implementing the retrofits, seismic assessment of the upgraded structure is carried out to check if the remediation at various seismic performance levels is acquired or not. Outcomes obtained from retrofitted scenarios are compared to the results obtained from the initial un-retrofitted configuration of the structure. This paper presents the process for optimal selection of rehabilitation solutions considering the cost of implementation, downtime and disruption to property owners while improving the seismic performance level of the structure.

  • The digital space color of new media environment denied not only the deterministic relationship of designed color and circumjacent color but also the deduced an special elements of digital space color. Such phenomena historical perspective of Gernot Wersig, new media principle of Lev Manovich and remediation of Bolter, J.K & Grusin, R. are expressed in various new media environment across. In particular, development of digital technology is moving away from its previous space color based on scientific, statistical and quantitative perspective by using diverse variables. The following research focuses on the fundamental concept of space color by type, composition of digital space color. The paper reflects on the meaning and concept of contemporary which enables the application of digital space color system on space through advanced technology. The principle of digital space color such as multidimensional malerisch, discontinuous video, vague original and copy, irregular repetitiveness of 'copy of copy', selective color of observer, experiential color of observer, and etc. makes it possible to extract the expressed element and method of digital space color. Meanwhile, the features of digital space color such as divided field of form, non-systematized of process and collage of communication can be inferred from case analysis.
