  • This study was performed in 14 unthinned Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris L. var. mongolica Litvin) plantations in northeast China. Data were collected on 70 sample trees of different canopy position with diameter at breast height (DBH) ranging from 6.9 cm to 34.5 cm. Diameter and length of knots per whorl below the living crown were studied by different vertical levels divided by relative knot height (RHK) in this paper. Models taking DBH and height to the crown base (HCB) as independent variables were developed to predict knot diameter (KD) in a sample whorl. According to the vertical distribution tendency and range of sound knot length (KLsound), KLsound was modeled as multiple linear function of DBH, KD and relative knot height (RHK). The loose knot length (KLloose) was described as a function of DBH, KD and height above the ground for knots (HK) in a mixed log-linear model. Results from this study can provide abundant knot information so as to describe the knot size and vertical distribution tendency of Mongolian pine plantation.

  • A digital 6-dof motion measuring system is developed using 7 accelerometers following Miles'[1] method. A snoic wave height gauge is also developed to measure the relative wave height at the foremost end of the ship. By combining the time series of both 6-dof motions and relative wave height, we can estimate the time series of real sea wave. Results of model tests shows the validity of the developed system.

  • This study was carried out to know physical growth and development, physical and nutritional indices and body fat weight and so forth by semi-longitudinal research method to measure body height, body weight, chest girth and sitting height of 260 of general high school and 306 of vocational high school 3rd grade students who are living in Seoul and born from 1966 March 1st to 1967 Feb.28th. The results are as follows: 1) Physical growth and development Growth in terms of body height showed one step straight linear development, andthat of body weight showed two step straight linear development in each section in high school. The age of cross over between two sexes of general high school students was between 10.6 to 12. 3 years in body height, between 10.8 to 13 years in body weight, between 11.2 to 14.6 years in chest girth and between 10 to 13 years in sitting height. The age of cross over between two sexes of vocational high school students was between 10.5 to 12.5 years in body height, between 10.5 to 12.5 years in body weight, between 10.5 to 12.5 years in chest girth and between 10.5 to 12.5 years in sitting height. In this periods, female group was superior to male group and after that male group was superior to female group again. The growth of vocational school students was superior to that of general school students in both sexes in terms of body height and body weight significantly. 2) Physical growth and nutritional indices In all cases of relative body weight, relative chest girth and relative sitting height, it was found to be increasing thereafter with advancing ages. In cases of $R{\"{o}}hrer$ index and Kaup index, it was found to be reaching to normal state thereafter with advancing ages. In each case of Vervaeck and Pelidisi index, it was found to be increasing and reaching to normal state thereafter with advancing ages. 3) Total body fat by vital measuring method Average values of body surface area, body volume and body density are measured indirectly by using the body height and body weight as Table 12, 13 and 14. The rate of body fat weight of general high school students was from minimum $11.96{\pm}3.53%(3.33{\pm}1.10kg$) to maximum $18.25{\pm}6.46%(9.08{\pm}2.01kg$) in male and from $25.88{\pm}3.62%(7.96{\pm}0.78kg$) to $43.00{\pm}7.22%(12.91{\pm}1.21kg$) in female. The rate of body fat weight of vocational high school students was from minimum $11.20{\pm}2.88%(3.32{\pm}1.13kg$) to maximum $17.16{\pm}5.88(10.83{\pm}3.16kg$) in male and from minimum $25.11{\pm}2.26%(7.91{\pm}0.89kg$) to maximum $42.16{\pm}7.96%(13.22{\pm}1.75kg$) in female.

  • This research work deals with the development of air pluviation method for preparing uniform sand specimens for conducting large scale laboratory testing. Simulating real field conditions and to get reliable results, air pluviation method is highly desirable. This paper presents a special technique called air pluviation or sand raining technique for achieving uniform relative density. The apparatus is accompanied by a hopper, shutters with different orifice sizes and numbers and set of sieves. Before using this apparatus, calibration curves are drawn for relative density against different height of fall (H) and shutter sizes. From these calibration curves, corresponding to the desired relative density of 60%, the shutter size of 13mm and height of fall of 457.2 mm, are selected and maintained throughout the pluviation process. The density obtained from the mobile pluviator is then verified using the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) test where the soil is poured in the box using defined shutter size and fall height. The results obtained from the DCP test are averaged as 60±0.5 which was desirable. The mobile pluviator used in this research is also capable of obtaining relative densities up to 90%. The instrument is validated using experimental and numerical approach. In numerical study, Plaxis 3D software is used in which the soil mass is defined by 10-Node tetrahedral elements and 6-Node plate is used to simulate plate behavior in the validation phase. The results obtained from numerical approach were compared with that of experimental one which showed very close correlation.

  • The aims of this study are to investigate rib geometries of reinforcing bars commercially available in Korea, Japan and USA, and evaluate bond performance using beam-end test specimens. Measurement of rib geometries of the bars include nominal area, average distance of rib, height of rib and an angle of rib perpendicular to bar axis. The result of this study show that rib height of Korean reinforcement bars are much less than those of Japan and USA resulting in the lowest value of relative rib area. Average bond strength of Korean D25 deformed bars is known as 9 % less than that of bars produced in USA. Bond strength depends primarily on the relative rib area. Bond strength of the high relative rib area bars produced in USA show 18% higher than that of bars produced in Korea.

  • Air pluviation method is widely adopted for preparation of large, uniform and repeatable sand beds of desired densities for laboratory studies to simulate in-situ conditions and obtain test results which are highly reliable. This paper presents details of a portable traveling pluviator recently developed for model sand bed preparation. The pluviator essentially consisted of a hopper, orifice plates for varying deposition intensity, combination of flexible and rigid tubes for smooth travel of material, and a set of diffuser sieves to obtain uniformity of pluviated sand bed. It was observed that sand beds of lower relative density can be achieved by controlling height of fall, whereas, denser sand beds could be obtained by controlling deposition intensity. Uniformity of pluviated sand beds was evaluated using cone penetration test and at lower relative densities minor variation in density was observed with depth. With increase in relative density of sand bed higher repeatability of uniform pluviation was achieved.

  • This studies were carried out to investigate the optimum shading for seedling cultivation of Cornus controversa and C. walteri. The experiment was performed under five different shading scheme such as 100%, 50%, 30%, 10%, and 2% of the natural full sun light intensity for 7 months in the field condition. Two species showed the highest height growth under 50% of relative light intensity, and the highest diameter growth at root collar was observed both under 100% and 50% of relative light intensity. C. controversa seedlings grown under 50% of relative light intensity produced more total biomass than control seedlings, but root biomass was less in the seedlings under 50% of relative light intensity. In case of C. walteri, total biomass production of the seedlings under 50% of relative light intensity was lower than that of the seedlings under full sun light intensity, but leaves and shoot biomass was slightly high under 50% of relative light intensity. Great reductions of height growth and diameter growth at root collar, and biomass production were observed below 30% of relative light intensity in the both species. T/R ratio of the two species was highest under 30% of relative light intensity, and the chlorophyll content of the seedlings tended to be increased by reduction of relative light intensity.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of side vent heights on temperature and relative humidity inside and outside the single-span plastic greenhouse (W: 7 m, L: 40 m H: 3.9 m) during natural ventilation. Four different heights (120, 100, 80, 60 cm) of the side vent were used as an experimental condition. Variations of temperature and relative humidity inside and outside the greenhouse and the differences between heights were compared by using one-way ANOVA. In the daytime, the difference in temperature between inside and outside the greenhouse was dropped from 14.0℃ to 7.1℃ as the side vent height increased. The temperature difference in the nighttime was less than 0.2℃ regardless of the height. One-way ANOVA on the temperature difference between heights presented that the statistical significance was founded between all of the combinations of height in the daytime. The difference in relative humidity between inside and outside the greenhouse was grown from -13.8% to -22.2% with a decrease in the side vent height. The humidity difference in the nighttime was less than 1% regardless of the height. One-way ANOVA on the humidity difference revealed that most of the side vent heights showed significance in the daytime but between 100 and 80 cm was not significant. It seemed because the external air became cooler during the experiment with a height of 80 cm. Conclusively, this study empirically demonstrated that the higher side vents resulted in the decrease of differences in temperature and relative humidity between inside and outside the greenhouse, and also the effect of side vent height was statistically significant. This study may be helpful for deciding the height of the side vent effective for controlling temperature and relative humidity in a single-span greenhouse during natural ventilation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of shading on the growth of 1 -year-old seedlings of Cornus controversa. The height growth was highest in relative light intensities of 100% and 50%, but relative growth rate in 50% was higher than that in 100% treatment. The growth did not occur under 9% relative light intensity. The root collar diameter growth at different light intensities is similar to height growth. The leaf area was highest in 50% relative light intensity, and the leaf area under the light intensity was small compared with the control. SLA and LAI of seedlings increased with decreasing relative light intensity. The LAR and LWR of seedlings increased with decreasing light intensity, but LWR decreased at 9% relative light intensity. The dry weight of root, stem, leaf and branch, and the number of branch and leaf decreased with decreasing relative light intensity. T/R ratio was highest in 17% and 30% relative light intensity. Lateral root growth decreased with decreasing light intensity except for that in 50% light intensity.
