A metrological atomic force microscope (M-AFM) was developed fur the length measurements of nanometer range, through the modification of a commercial AFM. To eliminate nonlinearity and crosstalk of the PZT tube scanner of the commercial AFM, a two-axis flexure hinge scanner employing built-in capacitive sensors is used for X-Y motion instead of PZT tube scanner. Then two-dimensional displacement of the scanner is measured using two-axis heterodyne laser interferometer to ensure the meter-traceability. Through the measurements of several specimens, we could verify the elimination of nonlinearity and crosstalk. The uncertainty of length measurements was estimated according to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. Among several sources of uncertainty, the primary one is the drift of laser interferometer output, which occurs mainly from the variation of refractive index of air and the thermal stability. The Abbe error, which is proportional to the measured length, is another primary uncertainty source coming from the parasitic motion of the scanner. The expanded uncertainty (k =2) of length measurements using the M-AFM is √(4.26)$^2$+(2.84${\times}$10$^{-4}$${\times}$L)$^2$(nm), where f is the measured length in nm. We also measured the pitch of one-dimensional grating and compared the results with those obtained by optical diffractometry. The relative difference between these results is less than 0.01 %.

The use of the friction coefficient is known to provide good discrimination ability in the classification of human constitutions, which are used in alternative medicine. In this study, a system that uses a multi-axis load cell and a hemi-circular probe is designed. The equipment consists of a sensor (load cell type, manufactured by the authors), an x-axis linear-bush guide motorized mobile stage that supports the hand being analyzed, and a signal conditioner. Using the proposed system, the friction coefficients from different constitutions were compared, and the relative repeatability error for the friction coefficient measurement was determined to be less than 2 %. The direction along the ring finger line was determined to be the optimum measurement region for a constitutional diagnosis between Tae-eumin and Soyangin types using the proposed system. There were some differences in the friction coefficient between the two constitutions, as reported in ancient literature. The proposed system is applicable to a quantitative constitutional diagnosis between Tae-eumin and Soyangin types within an acceptable level of uncertainty.

The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process in the steel industry is highly complicated, and subject to variations in raw material composition. During the BOF steelmaking process, it is essential to maintain the carbon content and the endpoint temperature at their set points in the liquid steel. This paper presents intelligent models used to estimate the endpoint temperature in the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process. An artificial neural network (ANN) model and a least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM) model are proposed and their estimation performance compared. The classical partial least-squares (PLS) method was also compared with the others. Results of the estimations using the ANN, LSSVM and PLS models were compared with the operation data, and the root-mean square error (RMSE) for each model was calculated to evaluate estimation performance. The RMSE of the LSSVM model 15.91, which turned out to be the best estimation. RMSE values for the ANN and PLS models were 17.24 and 21.31, respectively, indicating their relative estimation performance. The essential input parameters used in the models can be selected by sensitivity analysis. The RMSE for each model was calculated again after a sequential input selection process was used to remove insignificant input parameters. The RMSE of the LSSVM was then 13.21, which is better than the previous RMSE with all 16 parameters. The results show that LSSVM model using 13 input parameters can be utilized to calculate the required values for oxygen volume and coolant needed to optimally adjust the steel target temperature.
The free-piston Stirling engine (FPSE) has been widely used in aerospace owing to its advantages of high efficiency, high reliability, and self-starting ability. In this paper, a 20-kW FPSE is proposed by analyzing the requirements of space nuclear power reactor. A code was developed based on an improved simple analysis method to evaluate the performance of the proposed FPSE. The code is benchmarked with experimental data, and the maximum relative error of the output power is 17.1%. Numerical results show that the output power is 21 kW, which satisfies the design requirements. The results show that: a) reducing the pressure shell's thickness can improve the output power significantly; b) the system efficiency increases with the wire porosity, while the growth of system efficiency decreases when the porosity is higher than 80%, and system efficiency exhibits a linear relationship with the temperatures of the cold and hot sides; c) the system efficiency increases with the compression ratio; the compression ratio increases by 16.7% while the system efficiency increases by 42%. This study can provide valuable theoretical support for the design and analysis of FPSEs for space nuclear power reactors.
Changes in a marine environment have a broad socioeconomic implication on fisheries and their relevant industries so that there has been a growing demand for the medium-range (months to years) prediction of the marine environment Using a medium-range ocean prediction model (Ocean Mid-range prediction System, OMIDAS) for the northwest Pacific, this study attempted to assess seasonal difference in the mid-range predictability of the sea surface temperature (SST), focusing on the Korea seas characterized as a complex marine system. A three-month re-forecast experiment was conducted for each of the four seasons in 2016 starting from January, forced with Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) forecast data. The assessment using relative root-mean-square-error was taken for the last month SST of each experiment. Compared to the CFSv2, the OMIDAS revealed a better prediction skill for the Korea seas SST, particularly in the Yellow sea mainly due to a more realistic representation of the topography and current systems. Seasonally, the OMIDAS showed better predictability in the warm seasons (spring and summer) than in the cold seasons (fall and winter), suggesting seasonal dependency in predictability of the Korea seas. In addition, the mid-range predictability for the Korea seas significantly varies depending on regions: the predictability was higher in the East Sea than in the Yellow Sea. The improvement in the seasonal predictability for the Korea seas by OMIDAS highlights the importance of a regional ocean modeling system for a medium-range marine prediction.
In this study, an Excel-based model (ROADMOD) was developed to estimate pollutant loading from the road and evaluate BMPs. ROADMOD employs the Chezy-Manning equation and empirical expression for estimating surface runoff, and power function for pollutant buildup, and exponential function for pollutant washoff in SWMM. The results of model calibration for buildup and washoff using observed data revealed a good match between the simulation results and the observed data. The long-term surface runoff and sediment simulated by ROADMOD demonstrated a good match with those by SWMM with 2 ~ 14% of relative error. The shorter sweeping interval (within 8 days) remarkably decreased sediment loads from the road. It was found that the effect of reducing sediment loads from the road was greatly affected not only by the sweeping interval but also by sweeping on the day before a rainfall event. The 48% of removal efficiency of sediment loads from the road was achieved with 26 times of road sweeping per year when sweeping was performed on the day before the rainfall event. A 4-day sweeping interval showed similar removal efficiency (48%) with 96 times of sweeping per year. It is considered that the road sweeping on the day before a rainfall event could maximize the effect of reducing the non-point source pollution from the road with minimization of the number of road sweeping. So, the road sweeping on the day before a rainfall event can be considered as one of the useful and best management practices (BMPs) on road.

In this study, we propose a W-band frequency modulated continuous wave(FMCW) radar altimeter that can measure the altitude based on the frequency differences of transmitted and received signals. This W-band FMCW system is powered by an altitude control algorithm, which we propose to help prevent collisions of drones with obstacles in real deployment by measuring the relative altitude. It is shown that this algorithm enables the drone to be positioned within a 3 % error of altitude from the desired input height. The chip used in the W-band transmitter and receiver was fabricated using a 65-nm CMOS process, and a horn antenna was directly fed by incorporating an embedded waveguide feeder into the chip. The clutter spectra observed in terrains including soil, grass, and calm lake water were measured and compared, confirming the reflectivity characteristics of various surfaces of different water contents.
The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of X-ray generators installed in hospitals and universities and apply the quality control items of diagnostic X-ray generators to recognize the importance of periodic performance management. First, the reproducibility and linearity test results showed that the PAE of the reproducibility evaluation was high for the GX-650 devices that met the acceptance criteria in all the experimental conditions and lacked the periodic quality control. In the linearity evaluation, when the tube voltage was set to 100 kVp, It was measured to deviate from the error. In addition, it was found that the PAE in the low-accuracy evaluation results relative to an X-ray tube voltage and tube current of the device low occurrence frequency. The HVL experiment was included in all of the devices at the HVL by tube voltage. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the importance of quality control of all devices rather than hospital and laboratory, and to manage the device performance by actively managing the device, and to establish a short - term quality control system like special medical devices.
Comprehensive understanding of the flood risk assessments via frequency analysis often demands multivariate designs under the different notations of return periods. Flood is a tri-variate random consequence, which often pointing the unreliability of univariate return period and demands for the joint dependency construction by accounting its multiple intercorrelated flood vectors i.e., flood peak, volume & durations. Selecting the most parsimonious probability functions for demonstrating univariate flood marginals distributions is often a mandatory pre-processing desire before the establishment of joint dependency. Especially under copulas methodology, which often allows the practitioner to model univariate marginals separately from their joint constructions. Parametric density approximations often hypothesized that the random samples must follow some specific or predefine probability density functions, which usually defines different estimates especially in the tail of distributions. Concentrations of the upper tail often seem interesting during flood modelling also, no evidence exhibited in favours of any fixed distributions, which often characterized through the trial and error procedure based on goodness-of-fit measures. On another side, model performance evaluations and selections of best-fitted distributions often demand precise investigations via comparing the relative sample reproducing capabilities otherwise, inconsistencies might reveal uncertainty. Also, the strength & weakness of different fitness statistics usually vary and having different extent during demonstrating gaps and dispensary among fitted distributions. In this literature, selections efforts of marginal distributions of flood variables are incorporated by employing an interactive set of parametric functions for event-based (or Block annual maxima) samples over the 50-years continuously-distributed streamflow characteristics for the Kelantan River basin at Gulliemard Bridge, Malaysia. Model fitness criteria are examined based on the degree of agreements between cumulative empirical and theoretical probabilities. Both the analytical as well as graphically visual inspections are undertaken to strengthen much decisive evidence in favour of best-fitted probability density.

The relative position of the orbital eye can be a criterion for evaluating several pathological conditions. It is especially useful to diagnose orbital fractures, thyroid eye disease, orbital tumors and to evaluate the outcome of medication and surgical treatment. Hertel and Naugle are representative measurement tools used to measure eyeball protrusion values, and have different measurement results, such as fixed orbits, every time they are inspected, even if the same inspector repeatedly measures them. Even with the same calibrator, it is inevitable that different manufacturers will change the design of the stationary part of the orbit, causing the surveyor to make a measurement error. In this paper, we designed and fabricated a protrusion measuring device using a white light interferometer and measured the protrusion of the human eye and found that the precision and repeatability were significantly higher than the manual measurement method.
