  • This paper presents the results of an investigation on the effects of settlement of foundation on the behavior of geosynthetic-reinforced modular block walls in a tiered arrangement using the finite-element method of numerical analysis. A parametric study was performed by varing the foundation condition and offset distance between the tiers and reinforcement length of the lower and upper tier using varified finite-element model. The finite-element analysis provided relevant information on the mechanical behavior of the wall and interaction mechanism between the upper and lowers that was otherwise difficult to obtain from the limit-equilibrium analysis based current design approaches. Practical implications of the findings obtained from this study to current design approaches are discussed in great detail.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely investigated as reinforcements of CNT/polymer nanocomposites to enhance mechanical and electrical properties of polymer matrices since their discovery in the early 90's. Furthermore, the number of studies about incorporating CNTs into carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) to reinforce their polymer matrices is increasing recently. In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were dispersed in epoxy with 0.2 wt.% and 0.5 wt.%. Then, the SWNT/epoxy mixtures were processed to carbon fiber composites by a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) and a wet lay up method. The processed composite samples were tested for the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). The relationship between the interlaminar shear strengths and processing, and the reinforcement mechanism of carbon nanotubes were investigated. CNT/epoxy nanocomposite specimens showed the increased tensile properties. However, the ILSS of carbon fiber composites was not enhanced by reinforcing the matrix with CNTs because of processing issues caused by increased viscosity of the matrix due to addition of CNTs particularly for a VARTM method.

  • This study explores the resistive heating characteristics of discontinuous carbon fiber (CF)-epoxy composites. Test samples including 1, 3, and 5 wt.% CF were fabricated using sonication and cast molding processes. For heating performance characterization, DC currents were applied to the composite samples, and surface temperatures were evaluated visually and quantitatively using an infrared camera. To estimate the thermal performance of composites and verify the experimental results, finite element analyses were performed. The resistive heating mechanism was investigated in connection with CF loading and applied voltages. Resistive heating efficiency increased proportionately with CF concentration and applied voltage. To obtain homogeneous temperature distribution of the samples, high degree of CF dispersion is required.

  • The manufacturing output of our country's marine equipment industry has enlarged due to the rapid growth of the shipbuilding industry in our country since the 1990's. But recently, the relative newcomers, BRICs, Vietnam and Turkey promote the shipbuilding industry with the government supports, but these countries will be the huge market in the marine equipments. So that, the marine equipment companies of our country should strengthen the international competitiveness, specially with the reinforcement of overseas marketing and after service. Korea Marine Equipment Association(KOMEA) established the Global Support Center in Busan to strengthen overseas marketing and technical A/S. In this paper, the more effective global A/S system and business model for marine equipment industry are suggested including the strategic action plan, considering the demands of customer and the mechanism of A/S in marine equipments.

  • The aim of this research is to construct eigenfrequency optimization codes for plates with Arbitrary Rank Microstructures. From among noise factors, resonance sound is main reason for floor's solid noise. But, Resonance-elusion design codes are not fixed so far. Besides, The prediction of composite material's capability and an resonance elusion by controlling natural frequency of plate depend on designer's experiences. In this paper, First, using computer program with arbitrary rank microstructure, variation on composite material properties is studied, and then natural frequency control is performed by plate topology optimization method. The results of this study are as followed. 1) Programs that calculate material properties along it's microstructure composition and control natural frequency on composite material plate are coded by Homogenization and Topology Optimization method. and it is examined by example problem. 2) Equivalent material properties, calculated by program, are examined for natural frequency. In this paper, Suggested programs are coded using $Matlab^{TM}$, Feapmax and Feap Library with Homogenization and Topology Optimization method. and Adequacy of them is reviewed by performing the maximization or minimization of natural frequency for plates with isotropic or anisotropic materials. Since the programs has been designed for widely use. If the mechanism between composite material and other structural member is identified, extension application may be possible in field of structure maintenance, reinforcement etc. through application of composite material.

  • The seismic design concept of RC bridges is to attain the proper ductility of piers, yielding a ductile failure mechanism. Therefore, seismic design force for moment is determined by introducing a response modification factor (R), and lateral reinforcements to confine core concrete are specified in the current design code. However, these design provisions have irrationality, which results in excessive amounts of lateral reinforcements for columns in Korea, which are generally designed with large sections. To improve on these provisions, a new design method based on seismic performance has been proposed. To apply this to hollow sectional columns, however, further investigations and improvements must be performed, due to the different seismic behaviors and confinement effects. In this study, hollow sectional columns with different lap-splice of longitudinal bars and lateral reinforcements have been tested. Seismic characteristics and performance were investigated quantitatively. These research results can be used to derive a performance-based design for hollow sectional columns.

  • In this study, an estimation equation was proposed to predict the shear strength of RC interior beam-column connections. The proposed equation considered the effect of both truss and arch mechanisms, while the existing equations in the ACI and AIJ design codes consider only arch mechanism. In addition, the proposed equation estimates the shear strength of RC joints by considering the contribution of the vertical and horizontal steel bars on the effective compressive strength of concrete. The shear strength of RC joints calculated by the proposed equation was compared with the test results of 54 RC joints, which failed in shear before plastic hinges developed at the end of the adjacent beams. The comparison study showed that the proposed equation estimated the strength of the 54 specimens with a mean value of 1.14 and the coefficient of variation of 20%. The proposed equation provides improved prediction compared to those obtained from the equations in the ACI and AIJ design codes.

  • Plasma etching is an essential process for electronic device industries and the particulate contamination during plasma etching has been interested as a big issue for the yield of productivity. The oxynitride glasses have a merit to prevent particulate contamination due to their amorphous structure and plasma etching resistance. The YSiAlON oxynitride glasses with increasing nitrogen content were manufactured. Each oxynitride glasses were fluorine-plasma etched and their plasma etching rate and surface roughness were compared with reference materials such as sapphire, alumina and quartz. The reinforcement mechanism of plasma etching resistance of the YSiAlON glasses studied by depth profiling at plasma etched surface using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The plasma etching rate decreased with nitrogen content and there was no selective etching at the plasma etched surface of the oxynitride glasses. The concentration of silicon was very low due to the generation of SiF4 very volatile byproduct and the concentration of aluminum and yttrium was relatively constant. The elimination of silicon atoms during plasma etching was reduced with increasing nitrogen content because the content of the nitrogen was constant. And besides, the concentration of oxygen was very low on the plasma etched surface. From the study, the plasma etching resistance of the glasses may be improved by the generation of nitrogen related structural groups and those are proved by chemical composition analysis at plasma etched surface of the YSiAlON oxynitride glasses.

  • Nowadays, geosynthetics for reinforcement and protection are widely applied to the waste landfill site. Current research indicates the potential for progressive failure in geosynthetic-soil system depends on the interface shear strength governed by several intrinsic factors such as moisture, normal stress, chemical, etc. In particular, the effect of the acidity and basicity from the leachate is intensively reviewed to assess the chemical reaction mechanism of interface shear strength under the cyclic loading condition. New multi-purpose interface apparatus(M-PIA) has been manufactured and the cyclic direct shear tests using submerged geosynthetics and soils under the different chemical conditions have been performed, consequently, the thickness of interface and shear stress degradation are verified. The basic schematic of the Disturbed State Concept(DSC) is employed to estimate the shear stress degradation in the interface, then, normalized disturbed function is obtained and analyzed to describe the shear stress degradation of geosynthetic-soil interface with chemical influence factors under dynamic condition.

  • Recently a method for increasing the bearing capacity by laying the reinforcing materials with three or four layers as a method reinforcing the ground was studied recently. The purpose of this study is to examine the method for increasing shear-strength factor of the ground by reinforcing the ground under the foundation. According a method of wrapping ground with bakk-shape or semicircle-shape by geotextile was developed in this study and it looks likes anaspect that spreading footing exits under spread footing. A simulation loading-test using Aluminum sticks was carried out in order to examine the mechanism about bearing capacity of spread footing reinforced by geotextile. Increase of ultimate bearing capacity was verified in this simulation loading-test when charging loads to spread footing, which is propose from this study, reinforced by geotextile. And moving directions of points of the ground were also checked by grid-type indication method, and the areas where plastic failure appeared were checked by B-shutter photographing.
