  • In this paper, we are concerned with the problem of locating the zeros of regular polynomials of a quaternionic variable with quaternionic coefficients. We derive new bounds of Eneström-Kakeya type for the zeros of these polynomials by virtue of a maximum modulus theorem and the structure of the zero sets in the newly developed theory of regular functions and polynomials of a quaternionic variable. Our results generalize some recently proved results about the distribution of zeros of a quaternionic polynomial.

  • For a positive integer ℓ, $\bar{A}_{\ell}(n)$ denotes the number of over-partitions of n into parts not divisible by ℓ. In this article, we find certain Ramanujan-type congruences for $\bar{A}_{r{\ell}}(n)$, when r ∈ {8, 9} and we deduce infinite families of congruences for them. Furthermore, we also obtain Ramanujan-type congruences for $\bar{A}_{13}(n)$ by using an algorithm developed by Radu and Sellers [15].

  • Computer technology has a potential to change the contents of school mathematics and the way of teaching mathematics. But in our country, the problem whether computer technology should be introduced into mathematics classroom or not was not resolved yet. As a tool, computer technology can be used by teachers who are confident of the effectiveness and who can use it skillfully and can help students to understand mathematics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effective way to introduce and utilize computer technology based on the status quo of mathematics classroom setting. One possible way to utilize computer technology in mathematics classroom in spite of the lack of computer and the inaccessibility of useful software is using domain specific simulation software like 'Polyhedron'. 'Polyhedron', as we can guess from the name, can be used to explore regular and semi regular polyhedra and the relationship between them. Its functions are limited but it can visualize regular polyhedra, transform regular polyhedra into other polyhedra. So it is easier to operate than other dynamic geometry software like GSP. To investigate the effect of using this software in mathematics class, three classes(one in 6th grade from science education institute for the gifted, two in 7th grade) were chosen. Activities focused on the relationship between regular and semi regular polyhedra. After the class, several conclusions were drawn from the observation. First, 'Polyhedron' can be used effectively to explore the relationship between regular and semi regular polyhedra. Second, 'Polyhedron' can motivate students. Third, Students can understand the duality of polyhedra. Fourth, Students can visualize various polyhedra by reasoning. To help teachers in using technology, web sites like NCTM's illuminations and NLVM of Utah university need to be developed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of supplemental vitamin D on the physiological indices, muscle mass, and physical functions of aged women. Methods: A non-equivalent pretest-posttest design was used. The participants were 65 elderly women with low serum vitamin D levels. This study was conducted for 12 weeks. The experimental group (n=34) received vitamin D and regular exercise whereas the control group (n=31) received only regular exercise. The data were analyzed by the IBM PASW Statistics (SPSS) 19.0 program. Results: Serum vitamin D (U=0.00, p<.001), parathyroid hormone (U=99.50, p<.001) and calcium (U=250.50, p<.001) levels were significantly increased in the experimental group after the intervention. The experimental group showed significantly increased scores of muscle mass, strength, physical balance, and gait compared to those of the control group. Conclusion: Vitamin D supplementation improved physiological indices, muscle mass, and physical functions. In addition, this program may help to prevent disorders of the musculoskeletal system in aged women.

  • The aeroelastic stability of bridge decks equipped with multiple tuned mass dampers is studied. The problem is attacked in the time domain, by representing self-excited loads with the aid of aerodynamic indicial functions approximated by truncated series of exponential filters. This approach allows to reduce the aeroelastic stability analysis in the form of a direct eigenvalue problem, by introducing an additional state variable for each exponential term adopted in the approximation of indicial functions. A general probabilistic framework for the optimal robust design of multiple tuned mass dampers is proposed, in which all possible sources of uncertainties can be accounted for. For the purposes of this study, the method is also simplified in a form which requires a lower computational effort and it is then applied to a general case study in order to analyze the control effectiveness of regular and irregular multiple tuned mass dampers. A special care is devoted to mistuning effects caused by random variations of the target frequency. Regular multiple tuned mass dampers are seen to improve both control effectiveness and robustness with respect to single tuned mass dampers. However, those devices exhibit an asymmetric behavior with respect to frequency mistuning, which may weaken their feasibility for technical applications. In order to overcome this drawback, an irregular multiple tuned mass damper is conceived which is based on unequal mass distribution. The optimal design of this device is finally pursued via a full domain search, which evidences a remarkable robustness against frequency mistuning, in the sense of the simplified design approach.

  • Weight functions in fracture mechanics represent the stress intensity factors as weighted averages of the externally impressed boundary tractions and body forces. We extended the weight function theory for cracked linear elastic materials to calculate the notch stress intensity factor of a notched structure with anti-plane deformation. The well-known method of deriving weight functions by differentiation cannot be used for notched structures. By combining an appropriate singular field with a regular field, we derived weight functions for the notch stress intensity factor. Closed expressions of weight functions for notched cylindrical bodies are given as examples.

  • Valuable insight into the nonlinear dynamics of a system can be gleaned from its response to a single intense short pulse. We derive expressions for the corresponding nonlinear response functions and show that the fluctuation-dissipation theorem may be extended beyond the linear response limit to an arbitrary pulse intensity. As an illustrative example, we calculate response functions up to 11th order for the regular Lorentz gas in two dimensions.

  • The Berezin transform is the analogue of the Poisson transform in the Bergman spaces. Dyakonov characterize the holomorphic weighted Lipschitz function in the unit disk in terms of the Possion integral. In this paper, we characterize the harmonic weighted Lispchitz function in terms of the Berezin transform instead of the Poisson integral.

  • In this paper, we improve some of results in [2] by showing that if I is a cnacellation ideal and if J is a regular ideal then $\alpha$(m), $\beta$(m) and $\delta$(m), behave nicely under localization. We prove that lim \ulcorner=0 if and only if $\alpha$(m) is eventually constant and that lim\ulcorner exists and is equal to or less than $\alpha$(1). Finally we give several conditions which are equivalent to $lim_{m{\rightarrow}{\infty}}{\frac{{\alpha}(m)}{m}}=0$.
