This paper proposes an efficient and yet powerful local descriptor called phase-space partition based descriptor (PPD). This descriptor is designed for the mobile image matching and retrieval. PPD, which is inspired from SIFT, also encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the neighborhood around an interest point. However, without employing SIFT's smoothed gradient orientation histogram, we apply the region based gradient statistics in phase space to the construction of a feature representation, which allows to reduce much computation requirements. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that PPD achieves favorable performance close to that of SIFT and faster building and matching. We also present results showing that the use of PPD descriptors in a mobile image retrieval application results in a comparable performance to SIFT.

Local binary descriptors are well-suited for many real-time and/or large-scale computer vision applications, while their low computational complexity is usually accompanied by the limitation of performance. In this paper, we propose a new optimization framework, RLDB (Robust-LDB), to improve a typical region-based binary descriptor LDB (local difference binary) and maintain its computational simplicity. RLDB extends the multi-feature strategy of LDB and applies a more complete region-comparing configuration. A cascade bit selection method is utilized to select the more representative patterns from massive comparison pairs and an online learning strategy further optimizes descriptor for each specific patch separately. They both incorporate LDP (linear discriminant projections) principle to jointly guarantee the robustness and distinctiveness of the features from various scales. Experimental results demonstrate that this integrated learning framework significantly enhances LDB. The improved descriptor achieves a performance comparable to floating-point descriptors on many benchmarks and retains a high computing speed similar to most binary descriptors, which better satisfies the demands of applications.
In this paper, we will present a method to detect human hand and recognize hand gesture. For detecting the hand region, we use the feature of human skin color and hand feature (with boundary complexity) to detect the hand region from the input image; and use algorithm of optical flow to track the hand movement. Hand gesture recognition is composed of two parts: 1. Posture recognition and 2. Motion recognition, for describing the hand posture feature, we employ the Fourier descriptor method because it's rotation invariant. And we employ PCA method to extract the feature among gesture frames sequences. The HMM method will finally be used to recognize these feature to make a final decision of a hand gesture. Through the experiment, we can see that our proposed method can achieve 99% recognition rate at environment with simple background and no face region together, and reduce to 89.5% at the environment with complex background and with face region. These results can illustrate that the proposed algorithm can be applied as a production.

An affine invariant descriptor is proposed, which is able to well represent the affine covariant regions. Estimating main orientation is still problematic in many existing method, such as SIFT (scale invariant feature transform) and SURF (speeded up robust features). Instead of aligning the estimated main orientation, in this paper ellipse orientation is directly used. According to ellipse orientation, affine covariant regions are firstly divided into 4 sub-regions with equal angles. Since affine covariant regions are divided from the ellipse orientation, the divided sub-regions are rotation invariant regardless the rotation, if any, of ellipse. Meanwhile, the affine covariant regions are normalized into a circular region. In the end, the gradients of pixels in the circular region are calculated and the partition-based descriptor is created by using the gradients. Compared with the existing descriptors including MROGH, SIFT, GLOH, PCA-SIFT and spin images, the proposed descriptor demonstrates superior performance according to extensive experiments.

In the computer-aided detection (CAD) system of pulmonary nodules, a high false positive rate is common because the density and the computed tomography (CT) values of the vessel and the nodule in the CT images are similar, which affects the detection accuracy of pulmonary nodules. In this paper, a method of automatic detection of pulmonary nodules based on multi-scale enhancement filters and 3D shape features is proposed. The method uses an iterative threshold and a region growing algorithm to segment lung parenchyma. Two types of multi-scale enhancement filters are constructed to enhance the images of nodules and blood vessels in 3D lung images, and most of the blood vessel images in the nodular images are removed to obtain a suspected nodule image. An 18 neighborhood region growing algorithm is then used to extract the lung nodules. A new pulmonary nodules feature descriptor is proposed, and the features of the suspected nodules are extracted. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier is used to classify the pulmonary nodules. The experimental results show that our method can effectively detect pulmonary nodules and reduce false positive rates, and the feature descriptor proposed in this paper is valid which can be used to distinguish between nodules and blood vessels.

Amid rapidly increasing imagery inputs and their volume in a remote sensing imagery database, Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is an effective tool to search for an image feature or image content of interest a user wants to retrieve. It seeks to capture salient features from a 'query' image, and then to locate other instances of image region having similar features elsewhere in the image database. For a CBIR approach that uses texture as a primary feature primitive, designing a texture descriptor to better represent image contents is a key to improve CBIR results. For this purpose, an extended feature vector combining the Gabor filter and co-occurrence histogram method is suggested and evaluated for quantitywise and qualitywise retrieval performance criterion. For the better CBIR performance, assessing similarity between high dimensional feature vectors is also a challenging issue. Therefore a number of distance metrics (i.e. L1 and L2 norm) is tried to measure closeness between two feature vectors, and its impact on retrieval result is analyzed. In this paper, experimental results are presented with several CBIR samples. The current results show that 1) the overall retrieval quantity and quality is improved by combining two types of feature vectors, 2) some feature is better retrieved by a specific feature vector, and 3) retrieval result quality (i.e. ranking of retrieved image tiles) is sensitive to an adopted similarity metric when the extended feature vector is employed.

Large-scale retrieval algorithm is problem for visual analyses applications, along its research track. In this paper, we propose a high-efficiency region division-based image retrieve approaches, which fuse low-level local color histogram feature and texture feature. A novel image region division is proposed to roughly mimic the location distribution of image color and deal with the color histogram failing to describe spatial information. Furthermore, for optimizing our region division retrieval method, an image descriptor combining local color histogram and Gabor texture features with reduced feature dimensions are developed. Moreover, we propose an extended Canberra distance method for images similarity measure to increase the fault-tolerant ability of the whole large-scale image retrieval. Extensive experimental results on several benchmark image retrieval databases validate the superiority of the proposed approaches over many recently proposed color-histogram-based and texture-feature-based algorithms.
Among various region detector and shape feature extraction method, MSER(Maximally Stable Extremal Region) and SIFT and its variant methods are popularly used in computer vision application. However, since SIFT is sensitive to the illumination change and MSER is sensitive to the scale change, it is not easy to apply the image similarity retrieval. In this paper, we present a Scale and Rotation Invariant Region Feature(SRIRF) descriptor using scale pyramid, MSER and affine normalization. The proposed SRIRF method is robust to scale, rotation, illumination change of image since it uses the affine normalization and the scale pyramid. We have tested the SRIRF method on various images. Experimental results demonstrate that the retrieval performance of the SRIRF method is about 20%, 38%, 11%, 24% better than those of traditional SIFT, PCA-SIFT, CE-SIFT and SURF, respectively.

In this paper, we propose a local descriptor and a similarity measure that is robust to radiometic variations. The proposed local descriptor is made up Haar wavelet filter and it can contain frequency informations about the feature point and its surrounding pixels in fixed region, and it is able to describe feature point clearly under ununiform illumination condition. And a proposed similarity measure is combined with conventional entropy-based similarity and another similarities that is generated by local descriptor. It can reflect similarities between image regions accurately under radiometic illumination variations. We validate with experimental results on some images and we confirm that the proposed algorithm is more superior than conventional algorithms.

Hand posture recognition has been a wide region of applications in Human Computer Interaction and Computer Vision for many years. The problem arises mainly due to the high dexterity of hand and self-occlusions created in the limited view of the camera or illumination variations. To remedy these problems, a hand posture recognition method using 3-D point cloud is proposed to explicitly utilize 3-D information from depth maps in this paper. Firstly, hand region is segmented by a set of depth threshold. Next, hand image normalization will be performed to ensure that the extracted feature descriptors are scale and rotation invariant. By robustly coding and pooling 3-D facets, the proposed descriptor can effectively represent the various hand postures. After that, SVM with Gaussian kernel function is used to address the issue of posture recognition. Experimental results based on posture dataset captured by Kinect sensor (from 1 to 10) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the average recognition rate of our method is over 96%.
