  • Recently, a product-matrix (PM) framework was proposed to construct optimal regenerating codes for homogeneous distributed storage systems (DSSs). In this paper, we propose an extended PM (EPM) framework for coding of heterogeneous DSSs having different repair bandwidths but identical storage capacities. Based on the EPM framework, an explicit construction of minimum remote-repair bandwidth regenerating (MRBR) codes is presented for a specific heterogeneous DSS, where two geographically different datacenters with associated storage nodes are deployed. The data reconstruction and regeneration properties of the MRBR code are proved strictly. For the purpose of demonstration, an example implementation of MRBR code is provided. The presented MRBR code is the first optimal strict-regenerating code for heterogeneous DSSs. In addition, our proposed EPM framework can be applied to homogeneous systems also.

  • Traditional regenerating codes are designed to tolerate node failures with optimal bandwidth overhead. However, there are many types of partial failures inside the node, such as latent sector failures. Recently, proposed regenerating codes can also repair intra-node failures with node-level redundancy but incur significant bandwidth and I/O overhead. In this paper, we construct a new scheme of regenerating codes, called IR-RBT codes, which employs intra-node redundancy to tolerate intra-node failures and serve as the help data for other nodes during the repair operation. We propose 2 algorithms for assigning the intra-node redundancy and RBT-Helpers according to the failure probability of each node, which can flexibly adjust the helping relationship between nodes to address changes in the actual situation. We demonstrate that the IR-RBT codes improve the bandwidth and I/O efficiency during intra-node failure repair over traditional regenerating codes but sacrifice the storage efficiency.

  • In order to improve the reliability and repair efficiency of distributed storage systems, minimum bandwidth regenerating (MBR) codes based on cyclic variable fractional repetition (VFR) codes are constructed in this thesis, which can repair failed nodes accurately. Specifically, in order to consider the imbalance of data accessed by the users, cyclic VFR codes are constructed according to that data with different heat degrees are copied in different repetition degrees. Moreover, we divide the storage nodes into groups, and construct MBR codes based on cyclic VFR codes to improve the file download speed. Performance analysis and simulation results show that, the repair locality of a single node failure is always 2 when MBR codes based on cyclic VFR codes are adopted in distributed storage systems, which is obviously superior to the traditional MBR codes. Compared with RS codes and simple regenerating codes, the proposed MBR codes based on cyclic VFR codes have lower repair locality, repair complexity and bandwidth overhead, as well as higher repair efficiency. Moreover, relative to FR codes, the MBR codes based on cyclic VFR codes can be applicable to more storage systems.

  • Retinoic acid (RA) evokes pattern duplication in the regenerating salamander limb. Interestingly, it also enhances dedifferentiation in the regenerate by the morphological, histological and biochemical criteria. To examine whether there is any correlation between the RA-evoked pattern duplication and de novo protein synthetic profile in the regenerating salamander limb, especially during dedifferentiation, we analyzed stage-specific protein synthesis pattern in the normal and RA-treated regenerating limbs by metabolic labeling followed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. In the regenerating limbs without RA treatment, a few hundred kinds of proteins were found to be synthesized at the stage of wound healing and the total number of protein synthesized increased greatly as regeneration proceeded. The same trend was also observed in the RA-treated regenerating limbs. Interestingly, some protein spots were noted to be either newly synthesized or highly expressed by the RA treatment especially at the stage of dedifferentiation. The results shows that the enhancement of dedifferentiation state after the RA treatment correlates well with the protein synthesis profile, and suggest that those proteins are important for the RA-evoked pattern duplication in the regenerating limbs of salamander.

  • In our previous study, we have shown that Fgf-8 is expressed in the basal layer of the apical epithelial cap (AEC) and in the underlying thin layer of mesenchymal tissue of the regenerating limbs of Mexican axolotl, Amby-stoma mexicanum. Our present RT-PCR data also demonstrate that Fgf-8 transcript is localized both in the mesenchymal and epidermal tissues. To understand the effect of retinoic acid (RA) on the expression of Fgf-8 in the regenerating axolotl limbs, RA was injected intraperitoneally at the dediffer-entiation stage of limb regeneration. The RA treatment caused 8 change in the Fgf-8 expression profile of the regenerating limbs. In RA-treated limbs, duration of Fgf-8 expression was prolonged and a high level of expression was maintained during dedifferentiation and blastema formation stages. These results suggest that Fgf-8 is an important molecule in the process of pattern duplication of regenerating salamander limbs evoked by RA treatment.

  • In this paper, the linearly interpolated PRC(Pseudo Range Correction) regenerating algorithm was applied to improve the DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) positioning accuracy at user's spot by using the various PRC information obtained from multi-DGPS reference stations. The PRC information of each GPS satellite is not varying rapidly; it is possible to assume that the variation of PRC information of each GPS satellite is linear. So the linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm can be applied to improve the DGPS positioning accuracy at user's spot by using the various PRC information obtained from multi-DGPS reference stations. To test the performance of the linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm, maritime DGPS reference stations' PRC data was used in RTCM format. 11 maritime DGPS reference stations are in service providing DGPS information to public since 1999. Two set of 3 DGPS reference stations are selected to compare the performance of the linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm. The DGPS positioning accuracy was dramatically improved about 40%. Linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm adopted multi-channel DGPS receiver will be developed in near future.

  • This paper proposes a novel control scheme for the harmonic reduction of DC power regenerating systems, which can regenerate the excessive DC power from DC bus line to AC supply in subway systems. In the developed regenerating systems controlled by MAC(Modified a-Conduction) method, the order of remaining harmonics are 12k$\pm$1. In SHE(Selected Harmonic Elimination) method proposed in this paper, however, the l1th and 13th harmonics are additionally eliminated. And moreover 23rd harmonics, lowest order harmonics among the remaining harmonics, is eliminated by 23rd AC filter furnished at the output terminals of regenerating systems. To verify the validity of the proposed SHE-based harmonic reduction technique, computer simulations are carried out. Simulation results show that the THDs of output voltages are lower than that of the MAC method and the THDs in the control range are in the range of 0.53-0.68 percents.

  • Erasure codes have recently been applied to distributed storage systems due to their high storage efficiency. Regenerating codes are a kind of erasure codes, which are optimal in terms of minimum repair bandwidth. An (n,k,d)-regenerating code consists of n storage nodes where a failed node can be recovered with the help of the exactly d numbers of surviving nodes. However, if node failures occur frequently or network connection is unstable, the number of helper nodes that a failed node can contact may be smaller than d. In such cases, regenerating codes cannot repair the failed nodes efficiently since the node repair process of the codes does not work when the number of helper nodes is less than d. In this paper, we propose an operating method of regenerating codes where a failed node can be repaired from ${\bar{d}}$ helper nodes where $$k{\leq_-}{\bar{d}}{\leq_-}d$$.

  • This paper proposes a new control scheme for the power factor improvement of DC power regenerating systems, which can regenerate the excessive DC power from DC bus line to AC supply in substations for traction systems. From the viewpoint of both power capacity and switching losses, the system is designed on the basis of three-phase square-wave inverters and composed of two inverters, zig-zag connected output transformers, and an AC filter. The output voltages of the regenerating system are not sinusoidal. However, regenerated complex power is analyzed on the basis of fundamental components and thus the reactive power produced by harmonics is not considered. Therefore, it is needed a new control scheme capable of controlling the reactive power nearly to zero even for nonsinusoidal cases. To verify the validity of the proposed control scheme, computer simulations are carried out. And the results show that the power factor is theoretically higher than 0.99.
