  • The attenuation of waves transmitted through non-conservative joints that are shown in many paractical structures, is affected by the impedance and the orientation of the joint. In this paper, the joints between plate structures are assumed to be modeled as linear spring-dashpot systems and the transmission and reflection of vibration energy in the medium to high frequency ranges are investigated. The calculated power transmission and reflection coefficients are applied to the PFA method for the prediction of energy density and intensity in structures.

  • In satellite communication, attenuation, scattering, and depolarization of relatively high frequency waves such as millimeter waves are strongly influenced by rain. In order to study the rain attenuation, we introduce a new theoretical method, which enables us to obtain the reflection and transmission coefficients in arbitrary medium. We adopt this method to examine how the electromagnetic radiation is affected by homogeneous spherical raindrops. It is assumed that the raindrop shape is spherical and linearly locate in one direction. For the radiation of wave in raindrops, we consider the effective permittivity, in which the raindrop is assumed to be spherical. By adopting the invariant imbedding approach, the 1st order differential equations are derived for the reflection and transmission coefficients. We investigate the transmission and reflection of waves for various incident angles when the spherical raindrops are assumed to have random sizes.

  • In this paper, we present a simple method for characterizing a rectangular waveguide to circular waveguide transition Three standard loads consisting of a short circuit, an offset short circuit 1, and an offset short circuit 2 are sequentially connected to the circular waveguide port and the reflection coefficient at port 1 Is measured for each case. From known reflection coefficients, of standard loads and measured reflection coefficients, the scattering matrix of the transition Is obtained. The proposed method Is verified by the numerical experiment using a commercial software HFSS and by measurments of a actual rectangular-to-circular waveguide transition.

  • Numerical analysis of hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was carried out as an eco-friendly marine structure for coastal and harbor protection. Using boundary elements method with two-dimensional frequency-domain reflection and transmission coefficients and wave forces acting on the submerged flat plate were calculated with various submerged depths and respective motion allowable modes. The movable breakwater was found to be more efficient in wave-blocking than the fixed structure. Variation of reflection coefficients was significantly influenced by vertical motion of the body.

  • By applying the Boundary Integral Equation Method (BIEM) to obliquely incident for Rubble Mound Breakwater (RMB), wave reflection and transmission the coefficients are studied numerically. The validity of and the present BIEM is confirmed by comparing it with 1)numerical results of the eigenfunction expansion method of Dalrymple et al.(1991), and 2)numerical results of the BIEM of Kojima et al.(1988). Therefore, the characteristics of RMB for obliquely incident waves are investigated according to the variations of the wave period, equivalent linear nondimensional friction coefficient and direction of incident waves. It is revealed that the wave transformations of obliquely incident waves are different from those of normally incident waves.

  • This paper proposes a filter structure suitable for speech synthesis applications. We first derive the lossy pole-zero model by employing the wave digital filter(WDF) adaptor formula, and by converting the fixed termination value - 1 into a loss factor $\mu$c$\in$(-1, 1). Then we discuss how to determine the reflection We employ the Durbin's method in estimating the numerator polynomial of the lossy pole-zero transfer function from the given speech sound, and then apply the step-down algorithm on the numerator to extract the reflection coefficients of the closed-termination tract. For determining the reflection coefficients of the other parts we employ a pre-calculated pole-estimator polynomial.

  • In this paper, we propose an threshold-based Schur algorithm for estimating the media characteristics of sub-bottom multi-layers by using the signal generated by a parametric array transducer. We use the KZK model to generate a parametric array signal, and use the proposed threshold-based Schur algorithm for estimating the reflection coefficients of multiple sea bottom layers. Using computer simulation, we verify that the difference frequency component generated by the KZK model prevails over the signals of primary frequencies at long range. For the simulation, we use the transmit signal generated by the KZK and the reflected signal obtained from a lattice filter model for the seawater and sub-bottom of multi-level non-homogeneous layers. Through the simulation, we verify that the proposed threshold-based Schur algorithm can give much more accurate and efficient estimates of the reflection coefficients than methods using received signal, matched filter output signal, and normal Schur algorithm output.

  • The present investigation is to study the plane wave propagation and reflection of plane waves in a homogeneous transversely isotropic magnetothermoelastic medium with two temperature and rotation in the context of GN Type-II and Type-III (1993) theory of thermoelasticity. It is found that, for two dimensional assumed model, there exist three types of coupled longitudinal waves, namely quasi-longitudinal wave (QL), quasi-transverse wave (QTS) and quasi-thermal waves (QT). The different characteristics of waves like phase velocity, attenuation coefficients, specific loss and penetration depth are computed numerically and depicted graphically. The phenomenon of reflection coefficients due to quasi-waves at a plane stress free with thermally insulated boundary is investigated. The ratios of the linear algebraic equations. These amplitude ratios are used further to calculate the shares of different scattered waves in the energy of incident wave. The modulus of the amplitude and energy ratios with the angle of incidence are computed for a particular numerical model. The conservation of energy at the free surface is verified. The effect of energy dissipation and two temperatures on the energy ratios are depicted graphically and discussed. Some special cases of interest are also discussed.

  • This paper presents reflection symmetry of polarimetric SAR over the Amazon rainforest in terms of correlation coefficients between the pairs of HH- and HV-pol and VV- and VH-pol data by ALOS PALSAR. The reflection symmetry is defined as a non-zero correlation between HH- and HV-pol and VV- and VH-pol over natural distributed targets, and is a fundamental assumption for cross-talk calibration coefficient computation and for three-component decomposition for polarimetric SAR data. The Amazon rainforest is especially one of the common global reference sites for the reflection symmetry. The correlation coefficients for the pairs of reflection symmetry obtained in this study range from 0.018 to 0.097. The results imply that there exists a non-negligible dependency between co-pol and cross-pol in the distributed natural targets, and consequently the non-zero correlation must be considered as a potential contribution to errors of spaceborne SAR polarimetry to some extent.

  • A model for reflection and refraction of magneto-thermoelastic SV-waves at the interface of two transversely isotropic and homogeneous solid half spaces under initial stress by applying classical dynamical theory of thermoelasticity is purposed. The reflection and refraction coefficients of SV-waves are obtained with ideal boundary conditions for SV-wave incident on the solid-solid interface. The effects of magnetic field, temperature and initial stress on the amplitude ratios after numerical computations are shown graphically with MATLAB software for the particular model.
