  • In order to reduce exhaust omissions of spark ignition engine, it is important not only to improve catalyst conversion efficiency but also to directly reduce engine out exhaust emissions, during cold starting and warm up process. Therefore many researchers have been attracted to develop an early fuel evaporator(EFE) by Introducing a ceramic heater fur a solution of engine out exhaust emissions in SI engine. But, the performance of the EFE in MPI engine to reduce the exhaust emissions and to improve the cold startability has not been clarified yet. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a glow plug far EFE. Impinging spray using heated and unheated glow plug helps the vaporization of the fuel and heat up the three way catalyst sufficiently. The amount of CO, and UHC is reduced overall. The amount of NOx is higher at the initial stage, but become lower as time goes on than without glow plug.

  • 1. EAF Dust in Japan - Generation and Characteristics. The quantity of dust generated from EAF shops in Japan was estimated to be 520,000 tons/year in 1999. Extremely fine dust (or fume) is formed in the EAF by metal vaporization. Its characteristics such as chemical compositions, phases, particle size, leaching of heavy metal are mentioned. 2. EAF Dust Treatment Methods in Japan. In 1999, 61% of EAF dust was treated by regional zinc recovery processing routes, 25% went to landfill disposal, 4% was reused as cement material, and 10% was treated by on-site processing routes. The problems of EAF dust treatment methods in Japan are: (1) very high treatment cost, and (2) heavy environmental load (leaching of heavy metal, emission of dioxins, depletion of disposal sites, etc). It has been much hoped for that new dust management technology would be developed. 3. New technology of EAF dust treatment in Japan. In Japan, some new technologies of EAF dust treatment have been developed, and some others are in the developing stages. Following five processes are mentioned:. (1) Smelting reduction process by Kawasaki Steel, (2) DSM process by Daido Steel, (3) VHR process by Aichi Steel, (4) On-site dust direct recycling technology, and (5) Process technology of direct separation and recovery of iron and zinc metals contained in high temperature EAF off gas by the Japan Research and Development Center fur Metals.

  • This experiment was carried out at 450"C, which is relatively lower than the temperature for supercritical water oxidation (600-650$^{\circ}C$). In this experiment, the decomposition rates of various incombustible organic substances were very high. In addition, it was confirmed that hetero atoms existed in organic compounds and chlorine was neutralized by sodium(salt formation).However, to raise the decomposition rate, relatively large amount of sodium nitrate(3-4 times the equivalent weight) was required. When complete oxidation is intended as in the case with PCB, the amount of oxidizer and decomposition cost is important. But when vaporization reduction is required as in the case with nuclear wastes, the amount of radioactive wastes increases instead. But as can be seen in the result of XRD measurement, unreacted sodium nitrate remained unchanged. If oxidation reaction of organic substance simply depends on collision frequency, unreacted sodium nitrate can be recovered and reused, then oxidation equivalent weight would be sufficient. In the gas generated, toxic gas was not found. As the supercritical water medium has high reactivity, it is difficult to generate relatively low energy level SO$_{X}$, and NO$_{X}$.

An Experimental Study on Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a CI Diesel Engine Fueled with Pentanol/Diesel Blends (압축착화 디젤엔진에서 펜탄올/경유 혼합유의 연소 및 배기 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, combustion experiments were conducted to assess engine performance and exhaust gas characteristics using four blends of 1-pentanol and diesel as fuel in a naturally aspirated 4-stroke diesel engine. The blending ratios of 1-pentanol were 5, 10, 15, and 20% by volume. The experiments were carried out under four different engine torque conditions (6, 8, 10, and 12 Nm) while maintaining a constant engine speed of 2,000 rpm for all fuel types. The results showed that the use of 1-pentanol/diesel blended fuel generally led to a decrease in brake thermal efficiency, attributed to the low calorific value of the blend and the cooling effect due to the latent heat of vaporization. Additionally, both brake specific energy consumption and brake specific fuel consumption increased. However, the use of the blended fuel resulted in a general decrease in NOx concentration, a decrease in CO concentration except some conditions, and a reduction in smoke opacity across all conditions.

LPG Spray Characteristics in a Multi-hole Injector for Gasoline Direct Injection (분사조건에 따른 가솔린 직접분사용 다공 분사기에서의 LPG 분무특성)

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is regarded as an alternative fuel for spark ignition engine due to similar or even higher octane number. In addition, LPG has better fuel characteristics including high vaporization characteristic and low carbon/hydrogen ratio leading to a reduction in carbon dioxide emission. Recently, development of LPG direct injection system started to improve performance of vehicles fuelled with LPG. However, spray characteristics of LPG were not well understood, which is should be known to develop injector for LPG direct injection engines. In this study, effects of operation condition including ambient pressure, temperature, and injection pressure on spray properties of n-butane were evaluated and compared to gasoline in a multi-hole injector. As general characteristics of both fuels, spray penetration becomes smaller with an increase of ambient pressure as well as a reduction in the injection pressure. However, it is found that evaporation of n-butane was faster compared to gasoline under all experimental condition. As a result, spray penetration of n-butane was shorter than that of gasoline. This result was due to higher vapor pressure and lower boiling point of n-butane. On the other hand, spray angle of both fuels do not vary much except under high ambient temperature conditions. Furthermore, spray shape of n-butane spray becomes completely different from that of gasoline at high ambient temperature conditions due to flash boiling of n-butane.

Fire Test of Fiber Cocktail Reinforced High Strength Concrete Columns with Loading (섬유혼입공법을 적용한 고강도콘크리트 기둥의 재하 내화시험)

  • The 180 minutes fire test based on the standard curve of ISO-834 were conducted on three RC column specimens with different constant axial loading ratios to evaluate the fire performance of fiber cocktail (polypropylene+steel fiber) reinforced high strength concrete column. The columns were tested under three loading levels as 40%, 50%, and 61% of the design load. No explosive spalling has been observed and the original color of specimen surface has been changed to light pinkish grey. The maximum axial displacements of three specimens were 1.5~2.2 mm. There was no reduction in load bearing capacity of each specimen exposed to fire and no effect were observed on the fire performance within 61% of the design load. The tendencies of the results with loading, such as the temperature distribution of in concrete and the changes in temperature rise due to the water vaporization in concrete, are very similar to those without loading. The final temperatures of steel rebar after 180 minutes of fire test resulted in 491.4${^{\circ}C}$ for corner rebar, 329.0${^{\circ}C}$ for center rebar, and 409.8${^{\circ}C}$ for total mean of steel rebar. The difference of mean temperature between corner and center rebar was 153.7${^{\circ}C}$ㅍ. The tendency of temperature rise in concrete and steel rebar changed after 30~50 minutes from the starting time of the fire test because the heat energy influx into corner rebar is larger than that into center rebar. The cause of decrease in temperature rise was due to the water vaporization in concrete, the lower temperature gradient of the concrete with steel and polypropylene fiber cocktails, the moisture movement toward steel rebars and the moisture clogging.

An Experimental Study on Spray Characteristics of Directly Injected Bio-Ethanol-Gasoline Blended Fuel By Varying Fuel Temperature (직접분사식 바이오 에탄올-가솔린 혼합연료의 연료온도에 따른 분무 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As environment problem became a worldwide issue, countries are tightening regulations regarding greenhouse gas reduction and improvement of air pollution problems. With these circumstances, one of the renewable energies produced from biomass is getting attention. Bio-ethanol, which is applicable to SI engine, showed a positive effect on the PFI (Port Fuel Injection) type. However, Ethanol has a problem in homogeneous mixture formation because it has high latent heat of vaporization characteristics and in the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) type, mixture formation is required quickly after fuel injection. Particularly, South Korea is one of the countries with great temperature variation among seasons. With this reason, South Korea supply fuel additive for smooth engine operation during winter. Therefore, experimental study and investigation about application possibility of blending fuel is necessary. This paper demonstrates the spray characteristics by using the CVC direct injection and setting the bio-ethanol blending fuel temperature close to the temperature during each seasons: -7, 25, $35^{\circ}C$. The diameter and the width of the CVC are 86mm and 39mm. High-pressure fuel supply system was used for target injection pressure. High-speed camera was used for spray visualization. The experiment was conducted by setting the injection pressure and ambient pressure according to each temperature of bio-ethanol blending fuel as a parameter. The result of spray visualization experiment demonstrates that as the temperature of the fuel is lower, the atomization quality is lower, and this increase spray penetration and make mixture formation difficult. Injection strategy according to fuel temperature and bio-ethanol blending rate is needed for improving characteristics.

Determination of Inorganic Mercury in Urine and Airborne by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (냉각증기 원자흡수분광법에 의한 뇨 및 공기중의 무기수은 정량에 관한 연구)

  • Inorganic mercury in urine and airborne was determined by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Detailed sampling methods and analylical results are as follows : 1. 100~200ml of urine for each person was taken in 250 ml borosilicate bottle and $K_2S_2O_8$ (0.1g/100ml urine) was added to prevent bacterial contamination. About 1001 air of workingplace was absorbed in l0ml of absorbing solution. Urine samples and absorbing solution tubes were stored at $4^{\circ}C$. Dillution solution to prepare standard solution used deionized water (D.W) for urine and absorbing solution (A.S) for air. 2. 1n this procedure deteclion limit was 1ng/ml and mercury contents of blank reagent solution was 1~2ng/ml. 3. Calibration range was $0.02{\sim}0.1{\mu}g/ml$ and in this range r.s.d for each calibration curve in D.W and A.S and ${\pm}7.9%$ and ${\pm}3.7%$, respectively. 4. Repeatability (n=5 times, conc. $0.05{\mu}g/ml$) was ${\pm}5.8%$, in D.W. and ${\pm}4.4%$ in A.S, respectively. 5. Recovery for urine adding spiked concentration ($0.05{\mu}g/ml$) was about 90%. 6. Analytical result of samples was $1{\sim}139{\mu}g/l$ in urine and ${\sim}0.127mg/m^3$ in airborne.

Structural and Property Changes in Glass-like Carbons Formed by Heat Treatment and Addition of Filler

  • Glass-like carbon precursors shrink significantly during curing and carbonization, which leads to crack formation and bending. Cured furan resin powder and ethanol were added to furan resin to diminish the weight loss, to suppress the shrinkage and bending, and to readily release the gases evolved during polymerization and curing. Curing and carbonization were controlled by pressure and slow heating to avoid damage to the samples. The effect of the filler and ethanol on the fabrication process was examined by measuring the properties of the glass-like carbon, such as the specific gravity, bending strength, electrical resistivity, and microstructural change. The specific gravities of the filler-added glass-like carbons were higher than those of the ethanol-added samples because of the formation of macropores from the vaporization of ethanol during the curing and polymerization processes. Although the ethanol-added glass-like carbons exhibited lower bending strengths after carbonization than did the filler-added samples, the opposite result was observed after aging at 2,600$^{\circ}C$. We found that the macropores created from ethanol were contracted and removed upon heat treatment. The electrical resistivity of the glass-like carbon aged at 2,600$^{\circ}C$ was lower than those of the samples carbonized at 1,000$^{\circ}C$. We attribute this phenomenon to the fact that aging at high temperature led to well-developed microstructures, the removal of macropores, and the reduction of the surface area.

A Study on the Demonstration of Yellow Plume Elimination System from Combined Cycle Power Plant Using Liquid Injection System (액상 직분사 시스템을 이용한 복합화력 황연제거 실증 연구)

  • Combined cycle power plants (CCPP) that use natural gas as fuel are easier to start and stop, and have lower pollutant emissions, so their share of domestic power generation facilities is steadily increasing. However, CCPP have a high concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emission in the initial start-up and low-load operation region, which causes yellow plume and civil complaints. As a control technology, the yellow plume reduction system was developed and operated from the mid-2000s. However, this technology was unable to control the phenomenon due to insufficient preheating of the vaporization system for 10 to 20 minutes of the initial start-up. In this study, CFD analysis and demonstration tests were performed to derive a control technology by injecting a reducing agent directly into the gas turbine exhaust duct. CFD analysis was performed by classifying into 5 cases according to the exhaust gas condition. The RMS values of all cases were less than 15%, showing a good mixing. Based on this, the installation and testing of the demonstration facilities facilitated complete control of the yellow plume phenomenon in the initial start-up.
