  • There has been much interest in recycling electronic wastes in order to mitigate environmental problems and to recover the large amount of constituent metals. Silver recovery from electronic waste is extensively studied because of environmental and economic benefits and the use of silver in fabricating nanodevices. Hydrometallurgical processing is often used for silver recovery because it has the advantages of low cost and ease of control. Research on synthesis recovered silver into nanoparticles is needed for application to transistors and solar cells. In this study, silver is selectively recovered from the by-product of electrodes. Silver precursors are prepared using the dissolution characteristics of the leaching solution. In the liquid reduction process, silver nanoparticles are synthesized under various surfactant conditions and then analyzed. The purity of the recovered silver is 99.24%, and the average particle size of the silver nanoparticles is 68 nm.

  • We added surface-modified silica nanoparticles to poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) to investigate their effect on the mechanical properties on the PEN nanocomposite material. The torque and total torque values of the composites decreased in the silica nanoparticle composites. The tensile modulus of the composites reinforced with unmodified silica nanoparticles increased upon increasing the silica content, while the tensile strength and elongation decreased accordingly. In contrast, stearic acid-modified, silica nanoparticle reinforced PEN composites exhibited an increase in elongation and a decrease in tensile modulus upon addition of the silica nanoparticles because the stearic acid that had adsorbed onto the surface of the silica nanoparticle in multilayers could act as a plasticizer during melt compounding. Stearic acid modification had a small effect on the crystallization behavior of the composites. We calculated theoretical values of the tensile modulus using the Einstein, Kerner, and Nielsen equations and compared these values with the experimental data obtained from the composites. The parameters calculated using the Nielsen equation and the Nicolais- Narkis model revealed that the interfacial adhesion between silica nanoparticles and the PEN matrix could be improved.

  • It has been used so many kinds of architectural materials and interior products in current building construction, and use of composite architectural materials is increasing with the development of chemical technology. As the green architecture has become the center of public interest, much effort is conducted in advanced countries on the LCA point of view, such as restriction of architectural materials that emitting pollution substances, developing of Non-Toxic architectural materials, and recycling of used materials, etc. with the cooperation of related organizations, material manufacture companies, and construction companies. Because the kinds of materials to be used in building constructions are so various, there might be some possibility of personal and subjective choice at the time of materials selection resulting the missing the requirements of building components and the choice of harmful materials to human. One way to resolve the material problem is to present the green architectural materials which coincide with the quality performance at service and not harmful to man and nature. At this point of view, this study aims to develop the material classification model by investigating the major labelling system about green architectural materials in both domestic and abroad and to implement an efficient material selection system by making a powerful database of environmental standard and quality basis of building requirements.

  • Banana peels, often discarded as waste, represent one of the most abundant food by-products, highlighting the need for effective waste management and resource recycling strategies. Due to their rich nutritional content, banana peels have been investigated for various health benefits, including anti-obesity effects. In this study, we examined the potential anti-aging properties of banana peel extracts (BPEs) in Drosophila melanogaster. Our findings demonstrated that flies fed with BPEs exhibited an extended lifespan and a significant improvement in age-related decline in climbing ability. Additionally, Dilp2 mRNA expression level is markedly decreased in aged flies fed with BPEs. These results suggest that BPEs may serve as a potential anti-aging agent by enhancing locomotor function and extending lifespan, potentially through the modulation of insulin signaling in D. melanogaster.

  • After application of veterinary antibiotics, they may be partially metabolized before they are excreted by feces or urine either as unaltered form or as metabolites. Residual antibiotics enter the adjacent agricultural environments by spraying manure-based compost and liquid fertilizer on farmlands and lead to secondary pollution. The objective of this study was to compare the residual concentrations of 6 veterinary antibiotics by different production stages of liquid fertilizer from livestock manure recycling facilities. The relationship between concentration change of the residual antibiotics and the amount of liquid fertilizer component was also assessed. Pre-treatment showed the recovery of 63.4-106.7% at ppb level and the limit of quantification of 0.009-0.037 ㎍/L.As the result of analyzing the relationship between the residual concentrations of antibiotics and the amount of N component in liquid fertilizer by different production stages, the residual concentrations of antibiotics and N tended to decrease as the stabilization period elapsed during the liquid fertilization process. Average concentrations of sulfamethazine in raw materials, middle and final products of liquid fertilizer were 40.85, 26.17, 3.54 ㎍/L, respectively. Those of chlortetracycline decreased from 2.32 to 1.25 ㎍/L. The other 4 antibiotics also showed a decreasing trend by different production stages of liquid fertilizer. The amount of liquid fertilizer component N decreased from 0.21 to 0.096% by production stages of liquid fertilizer. It is considered that the correlation between residual antibiotic concentrations and N content can be applied as basic data for setting antibiotic reduction indicators.

  • As a practical means to upgrade urban sustainability, this paper focuses on resource cyclical systems concerned with the waste of electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Korea. Borrowing System Dynamics concepts and approaches, it examines behavioral changes of WEEE dynamics to observe whether the existing management methods can be readjusted. The measurement is based upon both reuse and material and thermal recycle simulation works in the individual stage of WEEE discharge, collection, and treatment, going beyond the traditional recycle-only customs. This research estimates that the newly introduced Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system would definitely exert a significant impact on the final stage of WEEE treatment, decreasing the final treatment volume in the first half of the research period. The trend, nonetheless, would be reversed in the second half, mainly owing to the additional waste volume originated from the local government and recycling center. Sensitivity analysis poses, among others, that the local government-supported reuse center should take charge of a pivotal role in the long run. The research also shows that sufficientand necessary conditions for the WEEE management and treatment should be given to the combined efforts, both from the private sectors and the public domains. Based on these research findings, the paper recommends that key stakeholders including the producer and the public organizations should devise how to jointly carry out specific agenda centered around partnership or network buildings.
