This paper proposes intelligent characters for fighting action games to which energy points are applied for more realistic implementation than those of previous researches. The intelligent characters decide their actions in consideration of their energy level as well as a current action, the step of the action, the distance, and past actions of opponent characters that were used in existing intelligent ones. We used two types of energy, HP(Health Point) and MP(Mana Point) that were frequently employed in recent on-line games. We experimented with proposed intelligent characters to investigate whether the intelligent characters learn proper actions and cope with opponent characters in consideration of their energy levels. Experimental results showed that the intelligent characters reacted with the best actions to obtain high score if their energy is sufficient, Otherwise, they did the actions to(that?) recharge their energy. From this observation, we could conclude that the proposed intelligent characters worked well and did effective actions in consideration of the their energy.

This paper proposes an algorithm that predicts the state of user's next actions, exploiting the HMM (Hidden Markov Model) on user profile data stored in the ubiquitous home network. The HMM, recognizes patterns of sequential data, adequately represents the temporal property implicated in the data, and is a typical model that can infer information from the sequential data. The proposed algorithm uses the number of the user's action performed, the location and duration of the actions saved by "Activity Recognition System" as training data. An objective formulation for the user's interest in his action is proposed by giving weight on his action, and change on the state of his next action is predicted by obtaining the change on the weight according to the flow of time using the HMM. The proposed algorithm, helps constructing realistic ubiquitous home networks.
The extent and depth of the event plan determines the scope of pedagogical experience in situations and consequently the quality of immersive learning based on our simulated world. In contrast to planning in conventional narrative-based systems mainly pursuing dramatic interests, planning in virtual world-based pedagogical systems strive to provide realistic experiences in immersed situations. Instead of story plot comprising predetermined situations, our inter-event planning method aims at simulating diverse situations that each involve multiple events coupled via their associated agents' conditions and meaningful associations between events occurring in a background world. The specific techniques to realize our planning method include, two-phase planning based on inter-event search and intra-event decomposition (down to the animated action level); autonomous and independent agents to behave proactively with their own belief and planning capability; full-blown background world to be used as the comprehensive stage for all events to occur in; coupling events via realistic association types including deontic associations as well as conventional causality; separation of agents from event roles; temporal scheduling; and parallel and concurrent event progression mechanism. Combining all these techniques, diverse exogenous events can be derived and seamlessly (i.e., semantically meaningfully) integrated with the original event to form a wide scope of situations providing chances of abundant pedagogical experiences. For effective implementation of plan execution, we devise an execution scheme based on multiple priority queues, particularly to realize concurrent progression of many simultaneous events to simulate its corresponding reality. Specific execution mechanisms include modeling an action in terms of its component motions, adjustability of priority for agent across different events, and concurrent and parallel execution method for multiple actions and its expansion for multiple events.
Purpose: This study was to describe the process of healthy dieting and develop a substantive theory that explains lifestyle in obese male college students. Methods: The participants were 11 students who had participated in self-dieting program in a health center. Data were collected with in-depth interviews and analyzed by grounded theory in Strauss and Corbin (1990). Results: Through analyzing process, 36 concepts, 18 subcategories, and nine categories were deduced. In axial coding, casual condition, 'shrinking themselves' and 'oriented to selfish lifestyle', context condition, 'distress in mutual understanding' impacted on phenomenon, 'making health with autonomous living pattern'. Intervening conditions were 'practicing with active measures' and 'growing the willpower' and action-interaction condition, 'devoting realistic plan with positiveness' totally lead to consequence in 'regaining social relationship' and 'pursuing harmonious sound of mind and body'. The periods of process were divided four stages, reflecting self-characteristics, situational copping phase, applying period realistic strategies, and developing phase of social relationship. The core category, 'developing communication competency' incorporated the relationship between and among all categories and explained the process. Conclusion: The findings indicate that self leading health program helped to develop the communication competency. Therefore, we would consider about internalized motives and external incentives in health programs.

The deformation and crack width of concrete walls of slabs, plates, panels and shells reinforced by a regular rectangular net of reinforcing bars and subjected to in-plane (membrane) internal forces is analyzed on the basis of a realistic model which takes into account the frictional-dilatant behavior of rough interlocked cracks, the effect of tension stiffening, and the dowel action of bars at crack crossings. Extensive numerical computer studies are carried out, and the reinforcement designs obtained from equilibrium conditions alone on the basis of either the classical frictionless approach or the recent frictional approach are compared in terms of the resulting crack widths. It is found that the use of frictional equilibrium design based on a low friction coefficient leads to a much smaller crack width than the classical frictionless design. The influences of bar diameter and crack spacing on the crack width are also studied. The model allows more realistic deformation analysis of reinforced concrete structures.
The scale of game development are rapidly increasing as the blockbuster games which cost $7\~20$ billion won, often appear on the markets. The game mechanics which is concentrated on technological elements of the game, necessarily requires the management of quality. In this paper, we propose a computer simulator for the quality evaluation of game mechanics which can analyze the quality accurately and economically in the design phase. The proposed simulator provides Petri net[7,8] and Smalltalk[9] for convenient modeling. The simulator gives the realistic evaluation like play test because it uses the realistic data of gameplay environment such as player action-pattern, game world map, and item DB but the previous evaluation methods can not consider the realistic gameplay environment and can only cover a limited scope of evaluation. To prove good performance of the proposed simulator, we have 80 simulations for the quality evaluation of the game mechanics of Dungeon & Dragon[13,14] in a given world map. The simulation results show that the proposed simulator can evaluate the faultlessness, optimization, and play balance of the game mechanics and gives better good performance than other evaluation methods.
We present a method for creating realistic 2D stick figure animations easily and rapidly using captured motion data. Stick figure animations are typically created by drawing a single pose for each frame manually for the entire time interval. In contrast, our method allows the user to summarize an action (e.g. kick, jump) for an extended period of time into a single image in which one or more action lines are drawn over a stick figure to represent the moving directions of body parts. In order to synthesize a series of time-varying poses automatically from the given image, our system first builds a deformable character model that can make arbitrary deformations of the user's stick figure drawing in 2D plane. Then, the system searches for an optimal motion segment that best fits the given pose and action lines from pre-recorded motion database. Deforming the character model to imitate the retrieved motion segment produces the final stick figure animation. We demonstrate the usefulness of our method in creating interesting stick figure animations with little effort through experiments using a variety of stick figure styles and captured motion data.
Some structures under the action of some specific loads can be treated as consisting of rigid and deformable parts. The paper presents a way to include rigid elements into a finite element model accounting for geometrical and material nonlinearities. Lagrange multipliers technique is used to derive equations of motion for the coupled deformable-rigid system. Solution algorithm based on the elimination of the Lagrangian multipliers and dependent kinematic unknowns at the element level is described. A follow-up paper(Rojek and Kleiber 1993) complements the discussion by giving details of the computer implementation and presenting some realistic test examples.

The paper describes creation methods of background scenes to implement realistic virtual environments in the VRSS (Virtual Reality Ship Simulator). VRSS is next-generation system constructed with virtual tools in a virtual space. Thus, it could have many benefits compared to conventional ship simulators composed with heavy bridge mock-up system and wide visual presentations. In this work, we developed effective 3D object modeling techniques, and constructed virtual harbor scene by using 3D-Webmaster authoring tool. The virtual harbor was built with object-oriented 3D objects modeled to interact with user's action. With the immersion-type VR system, we created virtual harbor environments in a virtual space, and discussed on the naturalness of the scene with test results of SDMPA (Semantic Differential Method for Psychophysical Assessment) by 10 subjects. As the results of subject assessment, all of the participants could felt natural-like harbor. Therefore, we found that the proposed creation methods and procedures of background scene are enabling to fit to the full mission VRSS construction.
