  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between the amount of antimicrobial agent (Defined Daily Dose, DDD) and antimicrobial resistance rate (%). The treatment of infectious diseases is becoming increasingly difficult, due to the increase in the number of multi-drug resistant bacteria, making it a clinically significant problem. Among the various factors, antimicrobial abuse is a major cause of antimicrobial resistance. The study was conducted on inpatients in a secondary university hospital in the central region utilizing the hospital's computerized statistical data and microbiological program of laboratory medicine from January 2010 to December 2014 pertaining to the dose of antimicrobial drugs for Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli strains isolated from blood culture. We analyzed the antimicrobial resistance rate per dose with the Pearson correlation coefficient. A significant (positive?) correlation was detected between the cefepime dose and the resistance of E. coli (P<0.033; r=0.907), while a significant negative correlation was found between the tobramycin dose and the resistance of E.coli. (P<0.028; r=-0.917). The aminoglycoside resistance of A. baumannii showed a significant negative correlation (P<0.048; r=-0.881), and the aminoglycoside resistance of E. coli showed a significant negative correlation as well (P<0.001; r=-0.992). In conclusion, the amount of antimicrobial agent (Defined Daily Dose, DDD) (is partly related to) the bacterial strain and its antimicrobial resistance rate (%).

  • Titanium and its alloys have excellent corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratios and creep properties in high temperature, which make them using many various fields of application. Especially, pure titanium, which has outstanding resistance for the stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting and microbiologically influenced corrosion, brings out to the best material for the heat exchanger, ballast tank, desalination facilities, and so on. Responding to these needs, welding processes for titanium are also being used GTAW, GMAW, PAW, EBW, LBW, resistance welding and diffusion bonding, etc. However, titanium is very active and highly susceptible to embrittlement by oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon at high temperature, so it needs to shield the weld metal from the air and these gases during welding by non-active gas. In this study, it was possible to get sound beads without humping and spatter with a decrease of peak power according to increase of pulse width, change of welding speed and overlap rate for heat input control, and shield conditions at pulsed laser welding of titanium plates for Lap welding.

  • The concept of an air lubrication has long been an object of attention since it can be utilized to reduce the frictional resistance, and what is more, it is eco-friendly. The present study examines the basic characteristics of an air cavity with intention of applying the air lubrication technology to the reduction of the resistance of a ship without excessive power increment. For the purpose, an air cavity was created at the bottom of a flat plate by injecting air behind a backward step and the hydrodynamic properties of the air cavity and the surrounding flow has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The influence of the step height and the air flow rate have been more carefully studied since they are presumed to be the main parameters affecting the characteristics of an air cavity. The results indicates that the shapes of the air cavities attached on the flat plate become "U" or "V" type depending on the incoming flow velocity and air flow rate. The study also confirms that the length of the air cavity increases with increase in air flow rate but there is a certain critical limit in the flow rate above which increase in the air cavity length is no more evident.

  • This study investigated the damage to the specimen due to liquid droplet impingement erosion corrosion, which improved the corrosion resistance and durability via hard anodization of 5083-H321 aluminum alloy, which is widely used for small ships and marine structures. The experiment combined liquid droplet impingement erosion and electrochemical equipment with the flow rates in natural seawater solution. Subsequently, Tafel extrapolation of polarization curves was performed to evaluate damage due to the liquid droplet impingement erosion corrosion. The damaged surface was observed using a 3D microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The degree of pitting damage was measured using the Image J program, and the surface hardness was measured using the micro-Vickers hardness tester. The corrosion current density, area, depth, and ratio of the damaged areas increased with the increase in flow rate. The grain size of the damaged area at a flow rate of 20 m s-1 showed fewer and minor differences in height, and a smooth curved shape. The hardness of the damaged surface tended to decrease with increase in flow rate.

  • High silicon cast irons(HSCI) with the high acid resistance have been used for the prevention of acid corrosion occurring in various structures under acid conditions. However, the HSCI is only known as one of materials which have high acid resistance, but few work has dealt with this material in domestic. Therefore, in this study, the acid resistance of various cast irons with alloying elements and melting conditions have been examined, and studied the influences of the matrix structures, mechanical properties and morphologies of graphite. The results obtained in this study are as follows : In case of melting temperature, the mechanical properties of specimen manufactured with high temperature of $1650^{\circ}C$ showed higher value because the inclusion and impurity were removed. In case of pouring temperature, the mechanical properties of specimen fabricated below $1350^{\circ}C$ of pouring temperature showed higher value because the amount of gas absorption from atmosphere decreased during the solidification time. The corrosion rate decreased with increase in Si content. On the other hand, Mn addition appeared an opposite trend with Si.

  • Impregnation of phosphorous additiers into graphite bulk was studied with the goal of enhancing the effectiveness of oxidationprotection. In addition graphite acid washing was carried out prior to the impregnation further to improve oxidation resistance. Observation of the oxidation rate for raw graphite(Raw) impregnated graphite with tri-butyl phsophate on raw block(RP) and impregnated graphite on acid-treated graphite(AP) in air are reported. The phsophorus residue adsorbed on the graphite surface at active sites was determined by FTIR, XRS, TGA techniques. AP with tri-butyl phosphate was found to result in both 30% reduction in oxidation rate at 1000$^{\circ}C$ compared to Raw and increase of 120$^{\circ}C$ in oxidation temperature From the samples of oxidation rate of each specimen in Arrhenius plot it can be said that the present oxidation resistance origninates from the change of chemical reaction modesw neigther by acid-washing treatment nor phsophate impregnation

  • The effects of input substrate concentration and dilution rate on mass transfer resistance in the operation of immobilized cell reactors were investigated using Rhodospirillum rubrum KS-301 immobilized by Ca alginate as reactor element and glucose as growth-limiting substrate. The kinetic parameters were obtained to estimate effectiveness factors. In the packed-bed reactor, internal mass transfer resistance was predominating although external resistance could not be neglected. The overall effectiveness factor was decreased with increase of dilution rate. In the continuous stirred-tank reactor, external resistance was nearly neglected and the overall effectiveness factor was not affected by dilution rate. In this experiment the overall effectiveness factors in PBR and CSTR were estimated to be 0.70 and 0.71 at D$_{i}$ = 0.2/h, R = 0.15 cm, and S$_{i}$ : 1.0g/L, respectively.

  • DLC coatings have been widely applied in industrial fields that require high corrosion resistance due to their excellent mechanical characteristics and chemical stability. In this research, effects of DLC coating thickness and defects on corrosion resistance were investigated for application of metallic bipolar plates in polymer membrane electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). Results revealed that a DLC coating thickness of 0.7 ㎛ could lead to a defect size reduction of about 75.9% compared to that of 0.3 ㎛.As a result of potentiodynamic polarization experiments, the current density under a potential of 0.6 V was measured to be less than 1 ㎂/cm2,which was an excellent value. Inparticular, the delamination ratio and the decrease rate of maximum pitting depth were up to 84.8% and 63.3%, respectively, with an increase in the DLC coating thickness. These results demonstrate that DLC coating thickness and defects are factors that can affect corrosion resistance of DLC coating and its substrate.

  • Due to the high temperature and pressure, the materials of pipeline in power plant are degraded by creep damage. So far, many conventional measurement techniques such as replica method, electric resistance method, adn hardness test method for creep damage have been used. Among them, the replica method has mainly been used for the inspection of components. But this technique is restricted to the applications at the surface of the objects and cannot be used to material inside. In this paper, the measuring methods of evaluation by using ultrasonic attenuation and electric resistance for the creep detection of creep damage in the form of cavities on grain boundaries or intergranular microcracks were carried out. Absolute measuring method of quantitave ultrasonic attenuation technique for 1Cr0.5Mo material degradation was analyzed for determining the creep degradation steps using life prediction formula. As a result of measurement for creep specimens, we founded that the coefficient of utrasonic attenuation was increased as the increase of creep life fracton(${phi}c$) and the decreasing rate of wlwctric resistance was also increased.

  • The resistance to the passage of airflow through various agricultural products is an important consideration in the design of an aeration or drying system. The amount of resistance to airflow varied widely from one kind of grain to another, and depended upon airflow rate, surface texture and shape of the particles, the size and configuration of voids, and foreign and fine material in the grain bed. The airflow rate was the major factor considered on this kind of study in the early stages. But these days, the studies on the resistance to airflow of grain affected by grain moisture content and foreign and fine material have been widely carried out. However the foreign an fine material in the grain bed could not be a major factor on the study in Korea because there were only a few grain process procedure after harvesting it. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of moisture content and airflow rate on airflow resistance to grain, and to develop a model to predict the static pressure drop across the grain bed as a function of moisture content and airflow rate. The rough rice varieties, Akibare, Milyang 15 (Japonica types), Samkwang, Backyang (Indica types)and covered barley variety, Olbori, which were harvested in 1985 were used in the experiment after cleaning them. Resistances to airflow of grain were investigated at four levels of moisture content (13-25%, wb.) for ten different airflow rates($0.01-0.15m^3/sm^2$). The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. Theaverage bulk densities were $585.3kg/m^3$ for rough rice and $691.6kg/m^3$ for barley at the loose fill, and were $648.8kg/m^3$ for rough rice and $758.2kg/m^3$ for barley at the packed fill. The pressure drops at the packed fill beds were approximately 1.4 to 1.8 times higher than those at the loose fill beds. 2. The pressure drops across grain beds deceased with the increase of moisture content and increased with airflow rate. The decreasing rates of pressure drop across grain beds according to the moisture contents at the lower airflow rates were higher than those at the higher airflow rates, and the increasing rates of pressure drop according to the airflow rates at the lower moisture contents were higher those at higher moisture contents. 3. The pressure drop across barley bed were much higher than rough rice beds and the pressure drops across Japonica type rough rice beds were a little higher than Indica type. 4. The mathematical models to predict the pressure drop across grain beds as a function of moisture content and airflow rate were developed from these experiments.
